The destroy notify for a DBus watch holds a reference to the IdleMonitor,
but the IdleMonitorWatch object doesn't (it knows all watches will
be destroyed before the monitor is, so it doesn't need one). This

the IdleMonitor alive (expecially true for device idle monitors,
which are only used by g-s-d/cursor), and that means that calling
the destroy notify freezes the monitor (and the next X calls

The XSync semantics mandate that alarms already expired will not
fire until the counter is reset and the alarm triggered again, so
clients traditionally called get_idle_time() first to see if they
should install the alarm.
This is inherently racy, as by the time the call is handled by

Instead, if we see that the watch would have fired in the past,
fire it immediately.
This is a behavior change, but it's a compatible one, as all legacy
clients are calling get_idle_time() first, and it was perfectly

The meta_create_texture_pipeline function used to create a dummy 1x1
texture so that it could make sure that the all of the state that
affects the shader generation would be set on the template pipeline so
that Cogl could share the pipeline's shader with any other pipelines

the only thing that affects the shader generation is the texture type,
not the actual texture data and Cogl now has a function to explicitly
set the texture type which we can use instead. Additionally even if
the template mechanism is not used at all Cogl will still end up
reusing the same shader because it now has a shader cache which is
indexed by the pipeline state so pipeline's don't strictly need to
share ancestry in order to take advantage of it. However we still
might as well use the function because if there is a common ancestry
it is faster to look up the shader because Cogl doesn't need to hash
the pipeline state.

Each level in the tower is initialized by binding the texture for that
level to an offscreen framebuffer and rendering the previous level as a
textured rectangle. The problem was that we were blending the previous
level with undefined data so argb32 windows with transparencies would
result in artefacts. This makes sure to disable blending when drawing

We can't really support the Gtk+ automatic scaling, as to much
code relies on the GdkWindow and XWindow sizes, etc to match.
In order to keep working we just disable the scaling, meaning
we will pick up the larger fonts, but nothing else. Its not
ideal but it works for now.

When we set the input focus, we first set the predicted window,
and then try to process focus events. But as XI_FocusOut on the
existing window comes before XI_FocusIn on the new window, we'll
see the focus out on the old window and think the focus is going
to nothing, which makes mutter think the prediction failed.
This didn't really matter as nothing paid attention to the focus
window changing, but with gnome-shell's focus rework, we'll try
and drop keyboard focus in events like these.
Fix this by making sure that we ignore focus window changes of our
own cause when updating the focus window field, by ignoring all
focus events that have a serial the same as the focus request or
lower. Note that if mutter doens't make any requests after the
focus request, this could be racy, as another client could steal
the focus, but mutter would ignore it as the serial was the same.
Bump the serial by making a dummy ChangeProperty request to a
mutter-controlled window in this case.

We substract one from the unredirect counter when enable_unredirect_for_screen
gets called. It is an unsigned integer so substracting one from zero (which means enable) would overflow and thus keep it peramently enabled.

Commit 4f2bb583bf changed things so that the compositor used
clutter_threads_add_repaint_func_full (CLUTTER_REPAINT_FLAGS_POST_PAINT
to get after-paint notification and send _NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN, but this
doesn't actually work, since Clutter will already have blocked for
VBlank before calling post-paint functions.
The result is that frame synced toolkits like GTK 3.8 will normally
only be able to draw every other frame.
Since ::paint doesn't work either, a new function
clutter_stage_set_paint_callback() has been added to Clutter
(and will be included in the 1.14 branch)

We have no need for normally reported events during grabs. In fact, it
might be harmful. A plugin might grab the keyboard through
meta_begin_modal_for_plugin() and then expect events to be reported to
the grab window they provide. If meanwhile this XIGrabDevice is
issued, events might start being reported normally to one other of our
windows breaking the plugin event processing.
In particular, on an empty workspace, we set input focus to our
no_focus_window. Then, if gnome-shell calls
meta_begin_modal_for_plugin() and meta_display_freeze_keyboard(), in
that order, input events will start being reported to no_focus_window.
There are two issues with this. One is that no_focus_window isn't
selecting for XI input events and thus the server discards them
completely. But even if that is fixed, events being reported to any
window other than the one gnome-shell expects - the clutter stage
window - means that events will stop reaching it.

Clients using _NET_WM_MOVERESIZE to start a drag operation may encounter
a race condition if the user presses and releases a mouse button very
fast, getting "stuck" in a grab state. While this is easily fixed with
the user pressing the button or hitting Escape as the EWMH spec suggests,
its's still a bit of annoyance for users.
After starting a grab operation, check that the button is actually pressed
by the client, and if not, cancel the grab operation. This prevents the
stuck grab in a race-free way, although it requires an extra round-trip
to the server.
With client-side decorations becoming more popular, the use of
_NET_WM_MOVERESIZE is on the rise, thus this bug is seen more frequently

meta_window_get_outer_rect() (which includes the visible borders but not
the invisible ones), whereas the more readily-available rectangle is the
MetaFrame.rect (which includes both). Computing the same width and height
as meta_window_get_outer_rect() involves compensating for the invisible
borders, but the UI layer is the authority on those anyway, so it seems
clearer to have it do the calculations from scratch.

Trying to track the fullscreen status outside of Mutter, as GNOME Shell
was doing previously, was very prone to errors, because Mutter has a
very tricky definition of when a window is set to be fullscreen and
*actually* acting like a fullscreen window.
* Add meta_screen_get_monitor_in_fullscreen() and an
::in-fullscreen-changed signal. This allows an application to
track when there are fullscreen windows on a monitor.
* Do the computation of fullscreen status in a "later" function that
runs after showing, so we properly take focus into account.
* To get ordering of different phases right, add more values

* Add auto-minimization, similar to what was added to GNOME Shell

Previously, we were handling failure to respond to _NET_WM_SYNC_REQUEST

During resizing we froze window updates when configuring the
window, and unfroze the window updates when processing the
next resize. This wasn't absolutely reliable, because we might
not have a next resize. Instead tie window freezing more
directly to the current sync request value - a window is
frozen until it catches up with the last value we sent it
in _NET_WM_SYNC_REQUEST.
Testing with unresponsive clients showed that there was a bug
where window->disable_sync once set, would not actually disable
sync, but it *would* disable noticing that the client was
unresponsive for the next resize. Fix that by checking for
->disable_sync before sending _NET_WM_SYNC_REQUEST.

mutter currently only filters the overlay key through the shell

The background vignette currently fits itself to the painted
texture, instead of the monitor. This causes some very
wrong looking drawing for backgrounds that don't fill the screen.

The WALLPAPER style of background painting currently
draws starting in the upper left corner of each monitor.
This isn't really correct, it means the seam between
monitors doesn't match up and edges look unbalanced if
the tile isn't a multipe of monitor size.
Really, the tiles should be centered in the middle of
the screen. (Just like when tiling a bathroom floor,
tiles should start in the center of the room.)

There is currently code to try to fill gradients in a
hardware native format, using #ifdefs. That optimization is
unimportant since gradients only use 2 byte buffers. It's
also incorrect because it's getting the channel order wrong

meta_window_is_remote compares a cached copy of the system hostname
with the hostname of the client window
(as presented by the WM_CLIENT_MACHINE property).
Of course, the system hostname can change at any time, so caching
it is wrong. Also, the WM_CLIENT_MACHINE property won't necessarily
change when the system hostname changes, so comparing it with the
new system hostname is wrong, too.
This commit makes the code call gethostname() at the time
WM_CLIENT_MACHINE is set, check whether it's remote then, and cache
that value, rather than comparing potentially out of sync hostnames
later.

Background handling in GNOME is very roundabout at the moment.
gnome-settings-daemon uses gnome-desktop to read the background from
disk into a screen-sized pixmap. It then sets the XID of that pixmap
on the _XROOTPMAP_ID root window property.
mutter puts that pixmap into a texture/actor which gnome-shell then
uses.
Having the gnome-settings-daemon detour from disk to screen means we
can't easily let the compositor handle transition effects when
switching backgrounds. Also, having the background actor be
per-screen instead of per-monitor means we may have oversized
textures in certain multihead setups.
This commit changes mutter to read backgrounds from disk itself, and
it changes backgrounds to be per-monitor.
This way background handling/compositing is left to the compositor.

If a window is frozen because it is repainting, that shouldn't kee[p
us from updating its position: we don't want a slow-to-update window
to move around the screen chunkily when dragged. (This does reduce
the efficiency of begin/end frames for replacing double-buffering,
but that never works very well in the case where there was an overlapping
window or the entire screen needed redrawing for whatever reason.)
This fixes a bug where a window that was mapped frozen would not get
positioned properly until after the map effect finished, and would
jump from 0,0 at that point. Since effects *do* need to prevent
actor repositioning by Mutter, we must position the actor before any
effect starts.
Because we now are queuing invalidates on frozen windows, fix the
logic for that so that we properly update everything when the window
unfreezes.

MetaButtonLayout is extremely unfriendly for introspection: its fields
are arrays of a fixed length, but the actual length is determined by
a custom stop value (e.g. not NULL / 0).
Without API changes this will never work nicely in introspection, but

the stop value rather than leaving it at random values.

The window positioning is delayed in idle_move_resize() in case the application
resizes/maximizes its window quickly after its creation. The delayed
positioning uses window->user_rect because of bug 426519 comment 3 (see

user_rect was not set in the initial positioning, causing the delayed
positioning unable to know which monitor we use for this window. As a
consequence, the window could jump spontaneously from one monitor to another.
With this patch, the window does not jump anymore.

When using the show-desktop shortcut with no desktop window, unshowing
will focus the second-most-recently-used window. If we find a desktop
window, it will be focused explicitly and everything works as expected;
however without a desktop window, we end up hiding the focus window,

to move focus away. We used to get away with this, as the not_this_one
parameter was ignored until commit e257580b94, now with bug 675982

On startup, workspaces are initialized according to the num-workspaces
preference. However when using dynamic workspaces, the actual number
of workspaces in use might be greater than the preference (when
replacing the window manager), forcing windows on those workspaces

and try to restore the previous number of workspaces (as read from

Fixes bug #670396. Without this fix the guard window may not
extend over the whole area of the screen after a XRandR
reconfiguration. The effect being that mouse events are
delivered to invisible windows.
Moving focus immediately on crossing events as we currently do
in focus-follows-mouse mode may trigger a lot of unwanted focus
changes when moving over unrelated windows on the way to a target.
Those accidental focus changes prevent features like GNOME Shell's
application menu from working properly and are visually expensive
since we now use a very distinct style for unfocused windows.

meta_window_group_paint tries to carefully figure out which parts of the
scene it can avoid painting. One area it avoids painting is the region of
the screen occupied by an unredirected window (if there's one present).

by translating the rectangle subtracted from the visible region.

When changing the overlay-key setting, the change only takes effect
on restart - there are actually two bugs involved:

If a window has its BoundingRegion shaped, we shouldn't unredirect it,

Since we now cache windows in the X server, we don't really need to cache
them here. Since we are redirecting windows in most cases, we're not gaining
anything except added memory usage. Additionally, remove the clip to screen
optimization - if a window is partially off-screen, we still need to draw
the entire thing as redirection means we won't get an expose event for it.
Additionally, when introducing invisible borders, something accidentally
slipped through: we were getting expose events on the invisible borders,
and they weren't in the cached pixels rect, so we were painting the theme
for them, even if we didn't actually paint anything with cairo. Make sure
to clip out the invisible borders instead of just the client rect so that
we don't draw if our expose event is on the invisible borders.

Require the headers for "XFree86" Xinerama to be present at compile

Commit 2fc880db switched from focusing the topmost window as the default
window to focusing the MRU window. This was done in alignment with the
introduction of per-workspace MRU lists to avoid problems where the window
stack was inadvertently changed when focusing windows during window switches.
Now that focusing windows don't have as big an impact on the stacking order,
we can revert back to focusing the top window, which is less confusing to the
user.
For now, leave per-workspace MRU lists, as they're a pretty good approximation
of a global MRU list, and it works well enough.

After _unmanage the object is semantically dead even if technically it's not,
so remove the prefs listener here to prevent it being called for a dead
object.
In particular this fixes a crash when starting up gnome-shell with at least
one gimp utility window opened which causes mutter to create a MetaWindow for
it only to immediately get an UnmapNotify afterwards which causes mutter to
unmanage the MetaWindow. Afterwards prefs_changed_callback is called for this
dead MetaWindow and tries to dereference the window->monitor pointer which is
already NULL.

The experimental Cogl api cogl_texture_pixmap_new() was recently changed
so it now expects an explicit CoglContext argument and it can also
return exceptions now via a GError. This patch updates mutters use of
the api accordingly.
This was preventing Clutter from running its dispose, preventing
it from being destroyed correctly. While a major bug and possibly
big memory leak, the most obvious effect was the message that Clutter

Leaving the stage at the wrong size. To avoid fighting with Clutter,
switch to resizing the stage with XResizeWindow(), similar to how a
toplevel window is handled by a window manager.
For maximized windows, titlebars cannot be used to reposition or

useful information (other than the application name), the screen

Different bits of code were using slightly different checks to test
whether a window was an attached dialog. Add a new
meta_window_is_attached_dialog(), and use that everywhere.
Also, freeze the is-attached status when the window is first shown,
rather than recomputing it each time the caller asks, since this could
cause problems if a window changes its type after it has already been
attached, etc. However, if an attached window's parent is destroyed,
or an attached window changes its transient-for, then fix things up by
destroying the old MetaWindow and creating a new one (causing
compositor unmap and map events to be fired off, allowing the display
of the window to be fixed up).
Remove some code in display.c that tried to fix existing windows if
the gconf setting changed, but which didn't actually do anything (at

The code here was wrong in every way: it only updated the shape if all the

There were actually *two* MetaFrameGeometry structs: one in theme-private.h,
one in frame.h. The latter public struct was populated by a mix of (void*)
casting and int pointers, usually pulling directly from the data in the private

the pointer hacks to populate it, instead relying on both structs being used
in common code.

with GL_TEXTURE_RECTANGLE_ARB as the target using direct GL
calls. This patch moves that code into a shared utility function in a
separate file instead. The function resolves the required GL symbols
dynamically instead of linking to them directly so that if Clutter
eventually stops linking to -lGL mutter will continue to build. The
function also splits the texture creation into a separate texture
creation and data upload stage so that it can use
cogl_texture_set_region to upload the data. That way it can avoid
clobbering the glPixelStore state and it can let Cogl do any necessary
format conversion. The code preserves the old value of the rectangle
texture binding instead of clobbering it because Cogl expects to be
able to cache this value to avoid redundant glBindTexture
calls. Finally, the function uses cogl_object_set_data to
automatically destroy the GL texture when the Cogl texture is
destroyed. This avoids having to have special code to destroy the cogl
texture.

When there was no root background pixmap, we were using a 1x1 repeating

An ARGB window with a frame is likely something like a transparent
terminal. It looks awful (and breaks transparency) to draw a big
opaque black shadow under the window, so clip out the region under
the terminal from the shadow we draw.
Add meta_window_get_frame_bounds() to get a cairo region for the
outer bounds of the frame of a window, and modify the frame handling
code to notice changes to the frame shape and discard a cached
region. meta_frames_apply_shapes() is refactored so we can extract
meta_frames_get_frame_bounds() from it.

If a window can not be tiled, e.g. due to its minimum size hints,
dragging away from the top after activating the maximize tile preview
does not cancel the maximization request, the only way to do so is by
hitting Escape.

Since appears-focus only propagates up from modal dialogs, if an
application removed the modal hint from a dialog before destroying it,
then its parent would be left with a stray reference to it in
attached_focus_window, causing it to be permanently appears-focused.
The obvious fix, calling meta_window_propagate_focus_appearance() when
the modal hint is removed, tends to cause noticeable flashing, because
the window will get drawn unfocused and then focused again.
So instead we just change meta_window_propagate_focus_appearance() to
check the window type only when focusing in, not when focusing out.
This would also cause flashing, but in this case we can avoid it by
not notifying the change in appears-focus on the parent window if it
is the expected_focus_window (which it will be by this point). (This
does mean though that if something weird happens and the window
doesn't end up becoming the focus window, it won't get redrawn
unfocused until something else forces it to.)

Sometimes on_all_workspaces is requested by the client/user, and sometimes

on_all_workspaces_requested, means the user explicitly made the window
sticky somehow (via imported session, _NET_WM_STATE from another wm,

When reload_net_wm_state() is called at startup to read the initial
value of _NET_WM_STATE, it was calling recalc_window_type(), but not
recalc_features(), which meant that, eg, meta->skip_taskbar would
never get initialized from meta->wm_state_skip_taskbar, which meant
that next time mutter went to update the window's _NET_WM_STATE, it
would overwrite the app-specified initial values. Fix that.
(In metacity, this bug is masked by the fact that recalc_features()
gets called when reading the intial value of WM_NORMAL_HINTS, which
comes after _NET_WM_STATE in metacity's prop_hooks_table. In mutter,
the table got reordered at some point, exposing the bug.)

For GNOME Shell, we need to grab our DBus names *before* we talk XSMP.
gnome-session takes our XSMP connection as "I'm ready", and starts

This requires a plugin API version bump.
Misc: Move handling of --version way earlier in main() where

If we handle a key event then passing it to GTK+ as well can only

We want switching between the windows of an application to be an easily
accessible operation. The convenient and memorable keybinding is the
key above the tab key - but the keysym for that key isn't consistent

The equivalent functionality can be achieved by using the
GdkDeviceManager to retrieve the client pointer device.
Maximized tiled windows end up with an inconsistent tile mode when
unmaximized by other means than dragging the window free (e.g.
using the unmaximize button or double clicking the title bar), so
reset the tile mode when unmaximizing.
This is not a problem for side-by-side tiling, as there are no
alternatives to dragging the window free.
When a tiled window is maximized (e.g. by clicking the title bar
button), unmaximizing the window restores the tiled state. While
this is reasonable for side-by-side tiling, it is confusing for
"maximize" tiled windows, as unmaximization has no visible effect.
Change unmaximize to only restore the tiled state of side-by-side
tiled windows.
The original patch triggered "maximize" when the window was dragged
to the top, so that the pointer was below or on the monitor edge and
above the work area's top.
If there's no chrome at the top of the monitor, so that monitor edge
and work area top fall together, the pointer cannot be moved above
the work area's top, so tiling was not triggered.
GTK is about to clean up its code and remove duplicate macros and
GdkDrawable usage. To prepare for that landing, we use the future-safe
versions of the same calls.

With client side windows, mixing GDK event delivery with explicit calls
to XUngrabPointer() can result in GDK losing button release events
it expects to get. This means that GDK thinks there is an implicit
grab in effect when there is none and send events to the wrong window.

We do a simplified conversion of the X event into a GdkEvent and send
it to directly to libgtk for delivery.

The code for defining a color as a constant had broken logic: it
would try to parse the color first as an double, then as an integer;
the second attempt would produce an error about overwriting the
already-set-GError. Then it would clear the error and store the constant
as a color.
Use the fact that colors have to start with a letter or #, divide the
space of constants into:
- Integers
- Doubles
- Colors
so we get good error messages. Based on a patch by

Note that this breaks the ability to specify an integer constant as
identical to another integer constant (the same didn't work for doubles.)

With the newest changes to GTK3, some things were changed. This patch
now uses the features introduced in gtk3-compat.h in previous patches.
This patch also introduces a macro named USE_GTK3 that is used to
differentiate between GTK3 and GTK2. Its main use is differenting
between expose and draw handlers for GtkWidget subclasses.
The draw vs expose handlers question is usually handled by using ifdefs
at the beginning and end to set up/tear down a cairo_t and then use it.
However, when the function is too different and too many ifdefs would be
necessary, two versions of the function are written. This is currently
the case for:
- MetaAccelLabel
- MetaFrames

For functions (but not callback types), '(closure)' is used on the
callback parameter, and takes the name of the parameter which is
the closure/user data.
A maximized window can't be resized from the screen edges (preserves
Fitts law goodness for the application), but it's still possible
to start a resize drag with alt-middle-button. Currently we just
don't let the user resize the window, while showing drag feedback;
it's more useful to let the user "break" out from the resize.
This provides a fast way to get a window partially aligned with
the screen edges - maximize, then alt-drag it out from one edge.
Behavior choices in this patch:
- You can drag out a window out of maximization in both directions -
smaller and larger. This can be potentilaly useful in multihead.
- Dragging a window in only one direction unmaximizes the window
fully, rather than leaving it in a horizontally/vertically
maximized state. This is done because the horizontally/vertically
maximzed states don't have clear visual representation and can
be confusing to the user.
- If you drag back to the maximized state after breaking out,
maximization is restored, but you can't maximize a window by
dragging to the full size if it didn't start out that way.
A new internal function meta_window_unmaximize_with_gravity() is
added for implementing this; it's a hybrid of
meta_window_unmaximize() and meta_window_resize_with_gravity().

Rather than trying to find out from Clutter whether mipmap generation
can be used together with texture_from_pixmap, just always assume
it can't and use the MutterTextureTower emulation code.
This fixes a problem with our previous hack for doing the query
no longer working. In the rare cases where mipmap generation
is supported, it is unlikely to produce significantly more efficient
or better looking results than the emulation. (In terms of efficiency,
we have better knowledge of when we need to update the lower mipmaps
and when we don't than CoglTexturePixmapX11.)
Some care is taken so mutter_shaped_texture_set_create_mipmaps() works
when changed on the fly and properly discards the old mipmap levels.
This isn't necesary currently, since it can only be controlled via
envvar, but is easier than future-proofing through documentation.

In commit d34ae764769 I switched mutter-window to ask for Raw rectangles
from the X server. This avoided 2 non synchronous and 2 synchronous X
requests per window with damage, per frame; 2 (non-sync) to
create/destroy a temporary region to copy the damage region into, 1 to
request the server to copy the damage region into a our given region and
another to fetch that region back into the client. The problem with raw
events though is that it's possible to DOS the compositor with them.

asks the server to only report BoundingBox changes to the damage region.

This changes the way we handle Damage events so instead of getting an
event when the damage region of a pixmap becomes non-empty we now get
sent all damage rectangles and stream those all though to
ClutterX11TexturePixmap using clutter_x11_texture_pixmap_update_area()
For Clutter 1.2, ClutterGLXTexturePixmap was updated so that calls to
clutter_x11_texture_pixmap_update_area are now cheap (glXBindTexImageEXT
calls are now deferred until just before painting) and since
ClutterGLXTexturePixmap is now capable of queueing clipped redraws that
can result in only updating a sub-region of the stage during a repaint
cycle (and using glXCopySubBufferMESA to present the sub-region redraw
to the front buffer) this should improve performance and reduced power
consumption for a range of use cases. (For example viewing a website
that has animated adverts doesn't force the whole screen to be redrawn
for each frame of the advert)
Besides being able to take advantage of glXCopySubBuffer to only update
a small region of the stage the fact that this patch makes Mutter now
request RawRectangles from the X server means we no longer do a
synchronous X request for a complete Damage Region for every window
damaged each frame. This should also improve performance.
CLUTTER_PAINT=redraws can be used to visualize what parts of the stage
are redrawn and with this patch applied I can open a terminal and as I
type I see that only the damaged areas of the terminal are being
redrawn.
In the case where a mutter window is created for an X Window that is
already mapped then we weren't calling mutter_window_mark_for_repair and
so we weren't calling XCompositeNameWindowPixmap e.g. for menu windows.
This doesn't get noticed because as soon as some damage gets delivered
for such windows the pixmap will be named anyway, but if we were to
change how damage is handled this would result in broken menus.
We now call mutter_window_mark_for_repair in mutter_window_new when the
given Window is already mapped.
It's nice to indicate when a title is truncated with an ellipsis.
Because themes may draw a title multiple times to draw a shadow, or
may include the window icon within the title area, we can't determine
the proper ellipsization width automatically, so add an optional
attribute to the <title/> element "ellipsize_width" which, if set,
is the width to ellipsize at.

Sometimes you want to position something (usually the title) to be centered
with respect to the entire frame instead of centered with respect to the
individual piece currently being drawn.
This patch adds frame_x_center and frame_y_center variables that represent
the X/Y centers of the frame in the coordinate system of the piece being
drawn.
The theme version is bumped from 3.0 to 3.1 (3.0 is just the new version
system, 3.1 will have all the features we add for Mutter-2.28.)

Although multi-screen support has not been tested and probably
doesn't fully work, the basic setup for multi-screen is that
we have the same list of plugins for all screens, but a different
instance of the plugins for each screen.
To allow plugins to do setup that is screen independent and needs
to occur early in the setup process, we identify a "default plugin
manager" and load (but not start) that plugin manager's plugins
immediately after we know our list of plugins.
That plugin manager is then reused for the first screen we open
and the plugins are started at that time. Separate plugin managers
are loaded and started for any other screens we open.
(A plugin could keep track of whether the screen-independent
setup has been done in a static variable, or it could do everything
in a way that is safe to do repeatedly.)

Allow a plugin to redirect preferences from one GConf location
to another GConf location. This is useful for keys that need to be
set differently in a plugin-managed environment (like GNOME Shell)
as compared to in standalone Metacity.
Overriding is implemented by overwriting the keys in the arrays
of preferences; a list of the current overrides is stored to allow
proper memory management when an override is itself overriden.
(we need to know whether to free the old keys or not)
This patch cleans up the comments in prefs.c a bit as well; some ideas
about less-exciting potential improvements were removed to make the
comments explaining the structure easier to figure out.

Rather than using the plugin objects constructed() method for doing
setup that requires the MetaScreen, add an explicit start() method
that is called after the screen is set.
The reason for this is that this allows plugin objects to be created
early before the bulk of Metacity setup, which then allows plugins
to affect how the setup happens. (For example, to change the way
that preferences are loaded.)
This is an incompatible change, since 'screen' is now not set in the
constructed method, so the plugin API version is bumped.

The current mechanism of metacity-theme-1.xml and metacity-theme-2.xml
is not flexible for allowing small-scale additions. With this patch
we bump the major version version once more to metacity-theme-3.xml
and add a single feature:
Any element in the DTD can have an attribute:
version="[<|<=|=>|>] MAJOR.MINOR"
And it will be ignored unless the predicate is met. (< and > should
be to be entity escaped as < and >)
This allows having alternate sections of the theme file for older and
newer version.
* Required GLib version is bumped to 2.14 so we can parse versions
with a regular expression.
* We switch internal version numbers to be "1000 * major + minor"
* We keep a stack of the maximum required version for the current portion
the XML tree so that the "cannot use versions you don't require" stricture
of the old code can be made local to a subpart of the tree.
* A version on the top metacity_theme element causes the entire file to
be ignored; this allows having one metacity-theme-3.xml for version 3.2
and newer (say) and a metacity-1.xml for everything old.
Actual new features will be added starting with 3.1 - 3.0 is just the
version="" feature.

Simplify code to find the right theme to load and loading it by moving
all the loading code into a load_theme() helper function, and making
meta_load_theme() use that as it searches through the directories.
Look for old-version themes even when loading relative to the working
in debug mode.
Don't unnecessarily duplicate and then free info->theme_file and
info->theme_dir.

The change to using gconf_client_all_entries() in commit 2d57b1b4
meant that workspaces without a GConf key for their name were not
getting a name at all. Fix this by doing a post-processing loop
to set workspace names that were not otherwise set.

Since all windows are now MetaWindows as well as compositor
windows, there's no reason to keep a compositor-specific hash table
mapping from XID to MutterWindow.
This reduces complexity and removes a call to XQueryTree that could
