42a5f4f479 MetaShapedTexture: don't intersect a region with an uninitialized clip
If we skip getting the clip rectangle because we don't have an
allocation or a texture, don't intersect with the visible region.
This avoids a pixman warning of an invalid rectangle.

7b537d6b8f Fix regression in mutter-wayland translations
Switching meta/util.h to gi18n.h was wrong, mutter is a library
and needs gi18n-lib.h, but that cannot be included from a public
header (since it depends on config.h or command line options),
so split util.h into a public and a private part.

6014d31dea Don't create a dummy texture for the texture pipeline template
The meta_create_texture_pipeline function used to create a dummy 1x1
texture so that it could make sure that the all of the state that
affects the shader generation would be set on the template pipeline so
that Cogl could share the pipeline's shader with any other pipelines
that are just rendering a texture. This is no longer necessary because
the only thing that affects the shader generation is the texture type,
not the actual texture data and Cogl now has a function to explicitly
set the texture type which we can use instead. Additionally even if
the template mechanism is not used at all Cogl will still end up
reusing the same shader because it now has a shader cache which is
indexed by the pipeline state so pipeline's don't strictly need to
share ancestry in order to take advantage of it. However we still
might as well use the function because if there is a common ancestry
it is faster to look up the shader because Cogl doesn't need to hash
the pipeline state.

7eb4bfbea3 wayland: implement support for plugin modality
Calling XIGrabDevice has no effect under wayland, because the
xserver is getting events from us. Instead, we need to use our
own interfaces for grabs.
At the same time, we can simplify the public API, as plugins
should always listen for events using clutter.

We must send frame_drawn and frame_timing messages to even when
we don't actually queue a redraw on screen to comply with the
WM sync spec.

So throttle such apps to down to a ~100ms interval.

f08921bd0c meta-shaped-texture: Don't queue redraws for obscured regions
When we get a damage event we update the window by calling
meta_shaped_texture_update_area which queues a redraw on the actor.
We can avoid that for obscured regions by comparing the damage area to
our visible area.

This patch causes _NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN messages to be not sent in some cases
where they should be sent; they will be added back in a later commit.

0089b5769c shaped-texture: Turn blending off when drawing entirely opaque regions
When drawing entirely opaque regions, we traditionally kept blending on
simply because it made the code more convenient and obvious to handle.
However, this can cause lots of performance issues on GPUs that aren't
too powerful, as they have to readback the buffer underneath.

Keep track of the opaque region set by windows (through _NET_WM_OPAQUE_REGION,
Wayland opaque_region hints, standard RGB32 frame masks or similar), and draw
those rectangles separately through a different path with blending turned off.

69f038f7c7 shaped-texture: Simplify pipeline creation
Split out pipeline creation to a separate function so that we don't
have so much dense code in the paint function itself, and remove some
indentation levels.

Also, don't use our own template for the unmasked pipeline, since it
has nothing different from the default pipeline template.

We also don't store the pipelines anymore since their creation isn't
really helping us; we set the mask texture and paint texture on every
paint anyway.

876f81db12 compositor: fix focusing the stage window
We can't use the X11 stage window, if clutter is not using the X11
backend (and even if it was, it would be bogus when the xwayland
server is not the one clutter is talking to). Instead, we introduce
the concept of "focus type", which we use to differentiate the
various meanings of None in the focus_xwindow field.

9a5f243f73 wayland: refactor window destruction and focus
The previous code was leaving focus fields dirty in MetaWaylandPointer
and MetaWaylandKeyboard at time (which could crash the X server
because of invalid object IDs)
The new code is more tighly integrated in the normal X11 code
for handling keyboard focus (meaning that the core idea of input
focus is also correct now), so that meta_window_unmanage() can
do the right thing. As a side benefit, clicking on wayland clients
now unfocus X11 clients.
For the mouse focus, we need to clear the surface pointer when
the metawindowactor is destroyed (even if the actual actor is
kept alive for effects), so that a repick finds a different pointer
focus.

268ebb1b18 wayland: Add basic input support
This copies the basic input support from the Clayland demo compositor.
It adds a basic wl_seat implementation which can convert Clutter mouse
events to Wayland events. For this to work all of the wayland surface
actors need to be made reactive.

The wayland keyboard input focus surface is updated whenever Mutter
sees a FocusIn event so that it will stay in synch with whatever
surface Mutter wants as the focus. Wayland surfaces don't get this
event so for now it will just give them focus whenever they are
clicked as a hack to test the code.

f9a11b3b18 wayland: Adds basic hybrid X + Wayland support
This adds support for running mutter as a hybrid X and Wayland
compositor. It runs a headless XWayland server for X applications
that presents wayland surfaces back to mutter which mutter can then
composite.

This aims to not break Mutter's existing support for the traditional X
compositing model which means a single build of Mutter can be
distributed supporting the traditional model and the new Wayland based
compositing model.

TODO: although building with --disable-wayland has at least been tested,
I still haven't actually verified that running as a traditional
compositor isn't broken currently.

Note: At this point no input is supported

531be6c413 Track the X Shape input region and use it for picking
We now track whether a window has an input shape specified via the X
Shape extension. Intersecting that with the bounding shape (as required
by the X Shape extension) we use the resulting rectangles to paint
window silhouettes when picking. As well as improving the correctness of
picking this should also be much more efficient because typically when
only picking solid rectangles then the need to actually render and issue
a read_pixels request can be optimized away and instead the picking is
done on the cpu.

3b51405255 main: Don't select for touch events on the stage
GNOME Shell's actors aren't touch capable, so we need to make sure that
they get the fallback pointer emulated events for now. This fixes the top
bar and other elements not working on a touchscreen without a grab.

b7840bec7d background: Allow using sliced textures for file based backgrounds
Some cards have 2k texture limits, which can be smaller than
commonly sized backgrounds.

One way to get around this problem is to use Cogl's "sliced texture"
feature, that transparently uses several hardware textures under the hood.

This commit changes background textures loaded from file to potentially
use slicing.  Based on a patch by Jasper St. Pierre

2a5b068863 compositor: Prevent an error in application code from keeping unredirect on permanently
We substract one from the unredirect counter when enable_unredirect_for_screen
gets called. It is an unsigned integer so substracting one from zero (which means enable) would overflow and thus keep it peramently enabled.

This should never happen because it means there is an unmatched
enable / disable pair somewhere. So in addition to fixing it add a
warning when this case gets triggered.

47b21b3547 Use new clutter_stage_set_paint_callback() function for after-paint notification
Commit 4f2bb583bf changed things so that the compositor used
clutter_threads_add_repaint_func_full (CLUTTER_REPAINT_FLAGS_POST_PAINT
to get after-paint notification and send _NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN, but this
doesn't actually work, since Clutter will already have blocked for
VBlank before calling post-paint functions.

The result is that frame synced toolkits like GTK 3.8 will normally
only be able to draw every other frame.

Since ::paint doesn't work either, a new function
clutter_stage_set_paint_callback() has been added to Clutter
(and will be included in the 1.14 branch)

bd19de9429 compositor: Add an API to focus the stage X window
gnome-shell has traditionally just called XSetInputFocus when wanting to
set the input focus to the stage window, but this might cause strange,
hard-to-reproduce bugs because of an interference with mutter's focus
prediction. Add API to allow gnome-shell to focus the stage window that
also updates mutter's internal focus prediction state.

c2a9ccb7e2 Let the UI layer (via the core) construct the frame mask
This essentially just moves install_corners() from the compositor, through
the core, into the UI layer where it arguably should have been anyway,
leaving behind stub functions which call through the various layers. This
removes the compositor's special knowledge of how rounded corners work,
replacing it with "ask the UI for an alpha mask".

The computation of border widths and heights changes a bit, because the
width and height used in install_corners() are the
meta_window_get_outer_rect() (which includes the visible borders but not
the invisible ones), whereas the more readily-available rectangle is the
MetaFrame.rect (which includes both). Computing the same width and height
as meta_window_get_outer_rect() involves compensating for the invisible
borders, but the UI layer is the authority on those anyway, so it seems
clearer to have it do the calculations from scratch.

577e5e2e1a background: don't tank if background is destroyed before it gets a pipeline
Right now we call unset_texture from MetaBackground's dispose method.

unset_texture assumes there's a pipeline available, but there may not
be if the object was just created.

This commit fixes that incorrect assumption.

ClutterBinLayout's get_preferred_width / get_preferred_height
doesn't respect fixed child positioning when calculating the
size of the layout, but does when allocating. This is absurdly
broken, but it's what we're given. Use a ClutterFixedLayout,

e15bc37225 compositor: map overlay window before redirecting windows
When windows get redirected off screen, all that gets left behind
is black. We don't want to flicker black at startup, though.

This commit maps the overlay window early, before redirecting
toplevels, so they end up getting snapshotted onto the background
pixmap of the overlay window when the overlay window is mapped.

6e02fb80c4 Always send _NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN for newly created windows
Send a _NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN for each newly created window, as required
by the specification. This avoids a race where a window might be created
frozen but already unfrozen by the time we first see fetch the
counter value.

Remove a duplicate call to meta_compositor_set_updates_frozen() which
was called before the MetaWindowActor is created and hence did nothing.

6e831c88a6 compositor: fix background vignette for non-stretched styles
The background vignette currently fits itself to the painted
texture, instead of the monitor.  This causes some very
wrong looking drawing for backgrounds that don't fill the screen.

This commit reworks the vignette shader code to be clearer, more
correct, and parameterized so that it knows how to scale and
position the vignette.

0e3d164117 compositor: when tiling background, center on screen
The WALLPAPER style of background painting currently
draws starting in the upper left corner of each monitor.

This isn't really correct, it means the seam between
monitors doesn't match up and edges look unbalanced if
the tile isn't a multipe of monitor size.

Really, the tiles should be centered in the middle of
the screen.  (Just like when tiling a bathroom floor,
tiles should start in the center of the room.)

This commit reworks the math to make that happen.

The callback has to return TRUE if it wants to be called again, so fix that

e623406c99 background: Fix gradient color rendering
There is currently code to try to fill gradients in a
hardware native format, using #ifdefs. That optimization is
unimportant since gradients only use 2 byte buffers. It's
also incorrect because it's getting the channel order wrong
at buffer initialization time.

This commit drops the ifdefs for clarity and fixes the
channel order.

580feb0c85 compositor: rework how backgrounds are managed
Background handling in GNOME is very roundabout at the moment.

gnome-settings-daemon uses gnome-desktop to read the background from
disk into a screen-sized pixmap. It then sets the XID of that pixmap
on the _XROOTPMAP_ID root window property.

mutter puts that pixmap into a texture/actor which gnome-shell then
uses.

Having the gnome-settings-daemon detour from disk to screen means we
can't easily let the compositor handle transition effects when
switching backgrounds. Also, having the background actor be
per-screen instead of per-monitor means we may have oversized
textures in certain multihead setups.

This commit changes mutter to read backgrounds from disk itself, and
it changes backgrounds to be per-monitor.

This way background handling/compositing is left to the compositor.

if an actor is relatively pixel aligned and not contorted. It then
returns the coordinates of the actor.

We do, in fact, need freezing to affect window geometry, so that
move-resize operations (such as an interactive resize from the
left, or a resize of a popup centered by the application) occur
atomically.

So to make map effects work properly, only exclude the initial
placement of a window from freezing. (In the future, we may want
to consider whether pure moves of a window being done in response
to a user drag should also be excluded from freezing.)

Rename meta_window_sync_actor_position() to

3d337a98d9 MetaWindowActor: Freeze shouldn't affect actor position
If a window is frozen because it is repainting, that shouldn't kee[p
us from updating its position: we don't want a slow-to-update window
to move around the screen chunkily when dragged. (This does reduce
the efficiency of begin/end frames for replacing double-buffering,
but that never works very well in the case where there was an overlapping
window or the entire screen needed redrawing for whatever reason.)

This fixes a bug where a window that was mapped frozen would not get
positioned properly until after the map effect finished, and would
jump from 0,0 at that point. Since effects *do* need to prevent
actor repositioning by Mutter, we must position the actor before any
effect starts.

Because we now are queuing invalidates on frozen windows, fix the
logic for that so that we properly update everything when the window
unfreezes.

The WM spec requires _NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN to *always* be sent when

spontaneous update during an interactive resize and during effects.

87fe9685b5 Distinguish "no delay" frames from spontaneous drawing
When a client is drawing as hard as possible (without sleeping
between frames) we need to draw as soon possible, since sleeping
will decrease the effective frame rate shown to the user, and
can also result in the system never kicking out of power-saving
mode because it doesn't look fully utilized.

Use the amount the client increments the counter value by when
ending the frame to distinguish these cases:

 - Increment by 1: a no-delay frame
 - Increment by more than 1: a non-urgent frame, handle normally

We previously had timestamp information stubbed out in

in _NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN then send a _NET_WM_FRAME_TIMINGS message
after when we have complete frame timing information, representing
the "presentation time" of the frame as an offset from the timestamp
in _NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN.

To provide maximum space in the messages,_NET_WM_FRAME_DRAWN and
_NET_WM_FRAME_TIMINGS are not done as WM_PROTOCOLS messages but
have their own message types.

d8696c17be Use clutter_stage_set_sync_delay()
Using a "sync delay" where we wait for 2 ms after the vblank before
starting to draw the next frame provides for much more predictable
latency for applications. An application can know that if it completes
a frame any time between 8ms before the vblank to the vblank,
it will reliably be drawn on the following vblank period, rather than
having an unpredictable latency depending on whether the compositor
is currently busy drawing a frame or not.

90f2a3ae4c mutter-window-actor: Improve unredirect heuristic
Currently we only unredirect monitor sized override redirect windows.
This was supposed to catch fullscreen opengl games and improve
their performance.

Newer games like fullscreen webgl games and SDL2 using games (like L4D) as well as wine based games do not use override redirect windows so we need a better
heuristic to catch them.

GLX windows always damage the whole window when calling glxSwapBuffers and
never damage sub regions. So we can use that to detect them.

The new heuristic unredirects windows fullscreen windows that have damaged the
whole window more then 100 times in a row.

424fc5245a Add compositor hook to process keybindings selectively
Currently keybindings are blocked while the compositor holds a grab; if
we want a keybinding to be available anyway, we use captured ClutterEvents
to determine the KeyBindingAction the event would have triggered and
run our own handlers (ugh).
Instead, provide a hook to allow the compositor to filter out keybindings
before processing them normally, regardless of whether the compositor
holds a grab or not.

bc96a14185 window-group: Subtract the unredirected window in stage space
meta_window_group_paint tries to carefully figure out which parts of the
scene it can avoid painting. One area it avoids painting is the region of
the screen occupied by an unredirected window (if there's one present).
When subtracting from the visible region, it gets the coordinate spaces
confused, and ends up subtracting the area at the wrong offset. Fix this
by translating the rectangle subtracted from the visible region.

If a window has its BoundingRegion shaped, we shouldn't unredirect it,
as it expects the rest of the windows from being shown under it. This
prevents applications like the Skype screen recorder or gtkRecordMyDesktop
which want to show a "border" around the recorded area from being
unredirected, giving the appearance of making the desktop freeze.

f9454e29db meta-plugin-manager: Only allow one plugin to be loaded
The "multiple plugins loaded at once" strategy was always a big fiction:
while it may be viable if you're super careful, it's fragile and requires
a bit of infrastructure that we would be better off without.

Note that for simplicity, we're keeping the MetaPluginManager, but it only
manages one plugin. A possible future cleanup would be to remove it entirely.

f1aada0fae window-actor: Punt mask generation to MetaWindowActor
This effectively makes MetaShapedTexture not a MetaShapedTexture, but a simple
and dumb MetaMaskedTexture, with an optimization for clipped regions.

We're doing this as the mask may need to be more complicated than made of
a cairo path -- we eventually want GTK+ to draw the entire frame background,
which we'll then scan.

a22859a64a shaped-texture: never slice shape mask texture
Since Cogl doesn't support multi-texturing with sliced textures and the
shape texture is combined with the texture-from-pixmap texture we need
to make sure we never construct a sliced mask texture. This patch simply
passes the COGL_TEXTURE_NO_SLICE flag to cogl_texture_from_data when
creating the shape mask texture.

8c1b2d5eda Simplify the frame testing logic in callers to grab borders
A lot of code did something similar to:

  MetaFrameBorders borders;

  if (window->frame)
    meta_frame_calc_borders (window->frame, &borders);
  else
    meta_frame_borders_clear (&borders);

Sometimes, the else part was omitted and we were unknowingly using
uninitalized values for OR windows. Clean this up by just testing
for a NULL frame in meta_frame_calc_borders and clearing for the
caller if so.

c844bab232 meta-background-actor: Chain up in dispose
This was preventing Clutter from running its dispose, preventing
it from being destroyed correctly. While a major bug and possibly
big memory leak, the most obvious effect was the message that Clutter
spat out:

  Clutter-CRITICAL **: clutter_actor_iter_next: assertion `ri->age == ri->root->priv->age' failed

Since we never disposed the actor correctly, it was never removed
from its parent, and the age wasn't updated correctly.

7319b10d72 MetaShapedTexture: Remove visible_pixels_region
When we were shaping the window with a cairo region, there was an easy
optimization to restrict painting only to the pixels we were going to
actually draw. With rounded corners, the amount of work we have to do
figure out what pixels isn't worth the small savings of not drawing the
completely transparent parts of the corners, so remove this optimization,
and the supporting meta_shaped_texture_get_visible_pixels_region()

3e0ef03fd9 MetaShapedTexture: Make public and directly derive from ClutterActor
ClutterTexture has many features that we simply don't use and don't make
sense for a subclass with custom drawing. Deriving directly from ClutterActor
simplifies our code by avoiding workarounds and makes things more robust.

Additionally, make it public. GNOME Shell was already assuming that any
MetaShapedTexture was also a ClutterTexture, and we need to replace these
bits with new API for GNOME Shell to use.

162213be0d Fix cogl crash from updating non-existent texture
The code here was always incorrect - we were processing damage events for
windows without having a texture. Before, this didn't matter, as
cogl_texture_get_width silently returned 0 for invalid handles. Cogl commit
4c3dadd35e changed this.

The fix here involves two strategies. First, we try to guard MetaTextureTower
from invalid textures. Second, we try not to go down the path that eventually
calls meta_shaped_texture_update_area by not handling damage events if we
don't have a texture for the window.

Some apps that do a lot of rendering on the screen like games, mostly run in
fullscreen where there is no need for them to be redirected doing so does add
an overhead; while performance is critical for those apps.

This can be disabled / enabled at runtime using
meta_enable_unredirect_for_screen / meta_disable_unredirect_for_screen

46415bb248 MetaWindowActor: Fix incorrect short-circuit
The code here was wrong in every way: it only updated the shape if all the
borders changed. It never saved new last_borders even if it *had* changed,
and the bounding rectangle's x and y positions were still important otherwise.

This had user-visible impact when doing simple things like changing the
border_width. It would short-circuit here and due to the above incorrectness,
weirdness could happen where windows would be cut off and so on.

fccd626604 Use a utility function to create GL_ARB_texture_rectangles
meta-texture-rectangle and meta-shaped-texture both create textures
with GL_TEXTURE_RECTANGLE_ARB as the target using direct GL
calls. This patch moves that code into a shared utility function in a
separate file instead. The function resolves the required GL symbols
dynamically instead of linking to them directly so that if Clutter
eventually stops linking to -lGL mutter will continue to build. The
function also splits the texture creation into a separate texture
creation and data upload stage so that it can use
cogl_texture_set_region to upload the data. That way it can avoid
clobbering the glPixelStore state and it can let Cogl do any necessary
format conversion. The code preserves the old value of the rectangle
texture binding instead of clobbering it because Cogl expects to be
able to cache this value to avoid redundant glBindTexture
calls. Finally, the function uses cogl_object_set_data to
automatically destroy the GL texture when the Cogl texture is
destroyed. This avoids having to have special code to destroy the cogl
texture.

fe12294b92 Create the 1x1 texture for the root background unsliced
When there was no root background pixmap, we were using a 1x1 repeating
texture as a simple way of drawing a solid color without adding a
second code path. However, when that 1x1 texture was combined into
a larger "atlas texture", hardware repeat couldn't be used, so a
small inefficiency from this approach became an enormous inefficiency
as clutter drew every pixel of the background as a separate rectangle.

67c3c93b8f Only shadow ARGB windows with a frame outside the frame
An ARGB window with a frame is likely something like a transparent
terminal. It looks awful (and breaks transparency) to draw a big
opaque black shadow under the window, so clip out the region under
the terminal from the shadow we draw.

Add meta_window_get_frame_bounds() to get a cairo region for the
outer bounds of the frame of a window, and modify the frame handling
code to notice changes to the frame shape and discard a cached
region. meta_frames_apply_shapes() is refactored so we can extract
meta_frames_get_frame_bounds() from it.

Using MetaWindowActor.opacity for _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY makes it
difficult to implement effects like fading a window in on map.
Instead, set the opacity on the MetaShadedTexture child and use
it when drawing the shadow.

Since the check MetaWindowGroup does on meta_actor_get_paint_opacity()
no longer covers this, we need to handle the opacity in
meta_window_actor_get_obscured_region() explicitly.

c84da3ce1b Move the installed includes to a subdir
If mutter is going to be a "real" library, then it should install its
includes so that users can do

    #include <meta/display.h>

rather than

    #include <display.h>

So rename the includedir accordingly, move src/include to src/meta,
and fix up all internal references.

There were a handful of header files in src/include that were not
installed; this appears to have been part of a plan to keep core/,
ui/, and compositor/ from looking at each others' private includes,
but that wasn't really working anyway. So move all non-installed
headers back into core/ or ui/.

bb50f65532 Allow mutter to be used as a library
Move all of the mutter code into a new libmutter-wm.so, split its
main() method into meta_get_option_context(), meta_init() and
meta_run(), add methods for using in-process plugins, and add
libmutter-wm.pc pointing to the new library.

The mutter binary is now just a tiny program that links against
libmutter-wm. The --version and --mutter-plugins options are handled
at the mutter level, not in libmutter-wm, and a few strange unused
command-line options (--no-force-fullscreen and --no-tab-popup) have
been removed.

f2158218be plugins: Add early_initialize vfunc
For GNOME Shell, we need to grab our DBus names *before* we talk XSMP.
gnome-session takes our XSMP connection as "I'm ready", and starts
running all the other random crud that people dropped in as autostart
files.  But for example, we need to have claimed
org.freedesktop.Notifications before a lot of said crud starts.

This requires a plugin API version bump.

Misc: Move handling of --version way earlier in main() where
it should be; no point having it wedged after plugin handling.

1133a4ff9c Make plugin loading failure fatal
If a plugin was explicitly specified, falling back to the default
silently is bad; a manager component like gnome-session can
do a better job of handling this scenario.

An example we've hit in gnome-shell is where SpiderMonkey changes
without gjs being rebuilt, and loading the plugin fails due to
unresolved symbols.

But there are obviously others, like the file being missing or
corrupt.

If we have repeats on for a full-sized image, then if the background
is displayed scaled (for example, in a desktop preview mode) then we
can get artifacts along the edge of the background where the repeat
of the opposite edge is blended in by bilinear scaling. So turn off

Add code to track and draw the root window background. The advantage of doing
it here as compared to in a plugin is that we can use the visiblity smarts
of MetaWindowGroup to optimize out drawing the background when obscured.

If handling other than tracking the _XROOTPMAP_ID property is desired in the
future, more functionality like setting the background from a file or doing
cross-fades can be added.

The new background actor is exposed to plugins via meta_plugin_get_background_actor()
similar to other exposed actors to allow cloning the background for use in
other displays. The actual class is not installed for public consumption at
the moment since it has no useful methods.

8b24711bba Omit shadows for fullscreen and maximized windows
Fullscreen and maximized windows never have visible shadows - the only
case where we would ever see them is if they bleed onto an adjacent
monitor and that looks bad.

It's small performance win to avoid computing them, and this also avoids
painting the top shadow for all maximized windows in GNOME Shell - since
the top panel isn't a X window, it doesn't factor into the computation
of what parts of windows are visible and maximized windows are computed
as having a top shadow.

Instead of setting shadow parameters on individual windows, add the
idea of a "shadow class". Windows have default shadow classes based
on their frame and window type, which can be overriden by setting
the shadow-class property.

Each shadow class has separably configurable parameters for the
focused and unfocused state. New shadow classes can be defined with
arbitrary names.

For attached modal dialogs, we want the shadow to fade out at the top
as if the window was glued to the parent at the top. Add a
shadow-top-fade property to MetaWindowActor and the corresponding
parameter to meta_shadow_factory_get_shadow().

The internal implementation of MetaShadow is adjusted to work
in terms of an "inner border" and "outer border" instead of doing
the calculations in terms of an aggregate border and the spread
of the shadow. The old way of doing things gets clumsy when the
top_fade distance is added in as well.

804117c456 Remove MetaRegion
In many places, MetaRegion was being used entirely internally, rather
than for gtk2/gtk3 compatibility. In these cases, it's simpler to just
depend on cairo-1.10 (for both gtk2 and gtk3) and use cairo_region_t.

The few places where we did need GDK compatibility (GdkEvent.region and
gdk_window_shape_combine_mask) are replaced with a combination of
converting GdkRegion to cairo_region_t and conditional code.

8b34b4bd0b MutterShapedWindow: drop all indirect references to textures
We don't get correct notifications for the ::cogl-texture property of
ClutterTexture in the case when we are unsetting the pixmap before calling
XFreePixmap. (This is because ClutterX11TexturePixmap is a hack on top
of ClutterTexture and we're a hack on top of that.) So we need to manually
clear everything out.

For consistency we also make sure that we drop all references to dead
textures:

 - When the shape changes
 - If the window pixmap texture changes without first being cleared
   (this is not expected to happen)

c9ebc0ea25 Always use mipmap emulation
Rather than trying to find out from Clutter whether mipmap generation
can be used together with texture_from_pixmap, just always assume
it can't and use the MutterTextureTower emulation code.

This fixes a problem with our previous hack for doing the query
no longer working. In the rare cases where mipmap generation
is supported, it is unlikely to produce significantly more efficient
or better looking results than the emulation. (In terms of efficiency,
we have better knowledge of when we need to update the lower mipmaps
and when we don't than CoglTexturePixmapX11.)

Some care is taken so mutter_shaped_texture_set_create_mipmaps() works
when changed on the fly and properly discards the old mipmap levels.
This isn't necesary currently, since it can only be controlled via
envvar, but is easier than future-proofing through documentation.

0b3327f04d Unset window pixmaps from MutterShapedWindow before freeing them
At least with the Mesa/DRI implementation of GLX, calling XFreePixmap()
on a pixmap before glxDestroyPixmap() on the corresponding GLX pixmap
causes an X error. To avoid triggering this with the new
ClutterTexturePixmapX11 code, we need to move our XFreePixmap after
unsetting the pixmap from the actor.

In commit d34ae764769 I switched mutter-window to ask for Raw rectangles
from the X server. This avoided 2 non synchronous and 2 synchronous X
requests per window with damage, per frame; 2 (non-sync) to
create/destroy a temporary region to copy the damage region into, 1 to
request the server to copy the damage region into a our given region and
another to fetch that region back into the client. The problem with raw
events though is that it's possible to DOS the compositor with them.

Instead of receiving an event for every bit of damage this patch instead
asks the server to only report BoundingBox changes to the damage region.

0c14640352 mutter-window: stream raw updates to ClutterX11TexturePixmap
This changes the way we handle Damage events so instead of getting an
event when the damage region of a pixmap becomes non-empty we now get
sent all damage rectangles and stream those all though to
ClutterX11TexturePixmap using clutter_x11_texture_pixmap_update_area()

For Clutter 1.2, ClutterGLXTexturePixmap was updated so that calls to
clutter_x11_texture_pixmap_update_area are now cheap (glXBindTexImageEXT
calls are now deferred until just before painting) and since
ClutterGLXTexturePixmap is now capable of queueing clipped redraws that
can result in only updating a sub-region of the stage during a repaint
cycle (and using glXCopySubBufferMESA to present the sub-region redraw
to the front buffer) this should improve performance and reduced power
consumption for a range of use cases. (For example viewing a website
that has animated adverts doesn't force the whole screen to be redrawn
for each frame of the advert)

Besides being able to take advantage of glXCopySubBuffer to only update
a small region of the stage the fact that this patch makes Mutter now
request RawRectangles from the X server means we no longer do a
synchronous X request for a complete Damage Region for every window
damaged each frame. This should also improve performance.

CLUTTER_PAINT=redraws can be used to visualize what parts of the stage
are redrawn and with this patch applied I can open a terminal and as I
type I see that only the damaged areas of the terminal are being
redrawn.

cfa30f9876 make sure we create a pixmap for all new mutter windows
In the case where a mutter window is created for an X Window that is
already mapped then we weren't calling mutter_window_mark_for_repair and
so we weren't calling XCompositeNameWindowPixmap e.g. for menu windows.

This doesn't get noticed because as soon as some damage gets delivered
for such windows the pixmap will be named anyway, but if we were to
change how damage is handled this would result in broken menus.

We now call mutter_window_mark_for_repair in mutter_window_new when the
given Window is already mapped.

b77b0a3d81 Load one copy of plugins early
Although multi-screen support has not been tested and probably
doesn't fully work, the basic setup for multi-screen is that
we have the same list of plugins for all screens, but a different
instance of the plugins for each screen.

To allow plugins to do setup that is screen independent and needs
to occur early in the setup process, we identify a "default plugin
manager" and load (but not start) that plugin manager's plugins
immediately after we know our list of plugins.

That plugin manager is then reused for the first screen we open
and the plugins are started at that time. Separate plugin managers
are loaded and started for any other screens we open.

(A plugin could keep track of whether the screen-independent
setup has been done in a static variable, or it could do everything
in a way that is safe to do repeatedly.)

97a9726845 Add an explicit start() method for plugins
Rather than using the plugin objects constructed() method for doing
setup that requires the MetaScreen, add an explicit start() method
that is called after the screen is set.

The reason for this is that this allows plugin objects to be created
early before the bulk of Metacity setup, which then allows plugins
to affect how the setup happens. (For example, to change the way
that preferences are loaded.)

This is an incompatible change, since 'screen' is now not set in the
constructed method, so the plugin API version is bumped.

2fbe4c2388 Do not use CGL_* symbols
The CGL_* defines in COGL were always meant to be private and should
have never been exposed in the first place. The API in COGL has been
updated to never require them starting from 1.1, but using the original
GL symbols has always been the intent of the API.

This commit removes the CGL_TEXTURE_RECTANGLE_ARB usage in favour of the
ARB-sanctioned GL_TEXTURE_RECTANGLE_ARB enumeration value.

47af6a0bbf Nice looking scaledown with mipmap emulation
Add MutterTextureTower, an abstraction for getting a image with
the right level of detail for rendering at a particular scale,
by manually scaling down by powers of two.

This results in much better looking scaled window images when
mipmaps can't be used with texture_from_pixmap (which is the
typical case for current GL drivers.)

When framebuffer objects are available, they are used to do
the scaledown using the GPU without having to pull the data
back from video memory. A software codepath is also available
for the case when FBO's are not present, though performance
will suffer

mutter-window.c originally grew an #include "window-private.h" for
window->override_redirect, but that was just fixed.  However since
then it also ended up relying on a few other minor private bits.

To fix that, add meta_window_is_mapped, promote meta_window_toplevel_is_mapped
to public, and use the public MetaDisplay accessor.

When we first start up, we do not want to run effects on any pre-exising
windows (this is either the case we are starting up and there are no windows,
or we are replacing an exisint window manager, or worse, we crashed, and we
just want to get to the desired desktop as quick as possible).

Dithered about where to place the check; putting into the plugin manager
reduces the number of places (and files) in which it needs to be done.

6b36e64e00 Take extra reference on the texture inside MutterWindow
We store a pointer to the texture independently of the ClutterContainer
internals, and rely on the pointer remaining valid until we run dispose.
Since we also provide public API to access this pointer, we should not
rely on the reference ClutterContainer holds to ensure that texture will
not be destroyed (e.g., some nasty developer could reparent the texture).

1f90529365 Don't explicitly set the size of the MutterWindow texture
Setting the size of the texture causes the minimum and preferred width and
height values to be fixed at the set value. The normal requisition functions
of ClutterTexture will already report the size of the texture pixmap as the
natural size, but also allow scaling down as needed if less space is
available. We don't need that here, but we want to allow someone to make
a ClutterClone of the texture actor.

With recent changes, Clutter no longer sets up the viewport correctly,
unless it receives ConfigureNotify events. If there is a plugin with
an xevent_filter function, then it's that plugins responsibility to pass

or the plugin doesn't have an xevent_filter function, then we should
call clutter_x11_handle_event() ourselves.

with clutter_actor_queue_redraw(); we need to queue the redraw
on the shaped texture rather than on the window actor to support

83f8bfd2ca Reduce overpaint in the window group
When we are painting a stack of 5-10 maximized windows, the
standard bottom-to-top method of drawing every actor results
in a tremendous amount of overdraw and can easily max out
the available memory bandwidth on a low-end* graphics chipset.
It's even worse if window textures are being accessed over
the AGP bus.

When we have opaque windows, we can go ahead and compute visibility
ourselves (in classic X-server fashion) and use that information to
restrict drawing obscured actors.

* Add MutterWindowGroup - a ClutterGroup subclass with logic
  for figuring out obscured regions.

* Add mutter_window_get_obscured_region() to get the region
  obscured by that window.

* Add mutter_shaped_texture_set_clip_region() to hint
  a clip region to the painting code; this is set based on
  the computed visible region of MutterWindowGroup.

* Add tidy_texture_frame_set_needs_paint() to hint that the
  paint can be skipped entirely; this is used when we detect
  that the window shadow is entirely obscured.

6726fcd25d Simplify relationship between mapping and visibility
Previously, changes to the visibility of a window could be indicated
by meta_compositor_map_window(), meta_compositor_unminimize_window(),
meta_compositor_set_window_hidden(), etc, with the exact behavior
depending on the 'live_hidden_windows' preference.

Simplify this so that visibility is controlled by:

 meta_compositor_show_window()
 meta_compositor_hide_window()

With an 'effect' parameter provided to indicate the appropriate
effect (CREATE/UNMINIMIZE/MINIMIZE/DESTROY/NONE.)

The map state of the window is signalled separately by:

 meta_compositor_map_window()
 meta_compositor_unmap_window()

And is used only to control resource handling.

Other changes:

 * The desired effect on show/hide is explicitly stored in
   MetaWindow, avoiding the need for the was_minimized flag.
   At idle, once we calculate the window state, we pass the
   effect to the compositor if it matches the new window
   state, and then clear the effect to start over for future
   map state changes.

 * meta_compositor_switch_workspace() is called before any windows
   are hidden or shown, allowing the compositor to avoid hiding
   or showing an effect for windows involved in the switch.

 * Handling of post-effect cleanups for MutterWindow are
   simplified - instead of trying to do different things based
   on the individual needs of different effects, we just wait until
   all effects complete and sync the window state to what it
   should be.

 * On unmap, once we destroy the pixmap, we tell ClutterX11Pixmap
   that we've done so, so it can clean up and unbind. (The
   unbinding doesn't seem to be working properly because of
   ClutterGLXPixmap or video driver issues.)

could be easily done otherwise. (There was another use in

9244f0f113 Move window repair and reshape to a paint function
Add a paint function that checks all windows for repair and
shape updates; this:

 - simplifies the logic for when a window needs to be repaired
 - avoids duplicate work when we get multiple damage effects
 - avoids the need to look ahead in the event queue

Instead of relying on repair to implicitly resize the
MutterWindow actor, set the size explicitly when the core
code updates the geometry. (This is needed because we haven't
repaired yet when we start an animation, and the animation
may depend on the size to, e.g., rescale from the center.)

Because the core geometry update happens before we start
maximize/unmaximize effects we need to work around this by
passing both the old and new geometry to the compositor.

 mutter-window.h; move a couple of private functions to
 compositor-private.h

compositor-private.h: Move MetaCompScreen declaration to here:
 Conceptually it's private to compositor.c, but MutterWindow
 manipulates some of the lists directly for now.

mutter-plugin.c compositor.c: Don't call mutter_window_effect_completed()
 for MUTTER_PLUGIN_SWITCH_WORKSPACE, but use a new
 mutter_switch_workspace_completed(), since the window is
 just used to identify a screen.

3aff9726eb Remove MetaCompositor virtualization
Now that we only have one compositor, there's no reason to access the
compositor functions through a vtable. Remove the MetaCompositor virtualization
and make the clutter code implement the meta_compositor_* functions
directly.

Move the checks for the compositor being NULL from the vtable wrappers
to the calling code (most of them were already there, so just a few
needed to be added)

Note: the compositor is actually hard-coded on at the moment and the plan
  is to remove the non-composited code entirely, so the checks are
  added only to keep things neat: they have no practical effect.

the XRender-based compositor, and make it mandatory to have XComposite,
XRender and Clutter.

Run-time support for non-composited operation is left for now.

072ec184d3 Revert "Unparent rather than destroy MutterWindows."
This reverts commit 16d49695ad.

If we want an actor to go away deterministically, we should call
clutter_actor_destroy(); using unparent instead a) may result
leaks through cyclic ref counts, and b) will delay the deallocation
of the window texture in a garbage collected environment until
the next garbage collection, causing much greater transient use
of memory.

0a863b8c2b Handle input area set to full screen or reset during start-up
info->pending_input_region needed to be destroyed in
mutter_set_stage_input_region() before it was set to something
else or before it was reset to be full screen (region == None).

Set the initial input area to an empty region by
setting info->pending_input_region to an empty region by default
and setting it to None or a new region if a new input region is
specified.

Remove show_overlay_window() function that was used to set an empty
input region on start-up, and uses a call to do_set_stage_input_region()
with info->pending_input_region as an argument instead.

51a6467968 Comprehensively rename to Mutter
Code:
All references in the code not related to themes, keybindings, or
GConf were changed from 'metacity' to 'mutter'. This includes, among other
things, strings, comments, the atoms used in the message protocol, and
the envvars used for debugging. The GConf schema file was reduced to
the 3 settings new to mutter.

The overall version was brought up to 2.27 to match current gnome.

Structure:
All files named '*metacity*' were renamed '*mutter*' with appropriate
changes in the automake system.  Files removed are
doc/creating_themes, src/themes, doc/metacity-theme.dtd,
metacity.doap.  These files will eventually end up in an external
gnome-wm-data module.

Installation location:
On the filesystem the mutter-plugindir was change from
$(libdir)/metacity/plugins/clutter to just $(libdir)/mutter/plugins.
The mutter-plugins.pc.in reflects these changes.

Note:
mutter.desktop.in and mutter-wm.desktop both continue to have
X-GNOME-WMSettingsModule=metacity set.  This allows
gnome-control-center to continue using libmetacity.so for
configuration.  This is fine since most the general keybindings and wm
settings are being read from /apps/metacity/* in gconf.

7eae5d4eab Allow slicing the mask texture
It doesn't make sense to allow the window texture to be sliced,
but not allow the mask texture to be sliced. So, we should either
set 'disable-slicing' for the texture actor or not pass NO_SLICING when
creating the mask texture.

While slicing currently results in only the first layer being shown,
disabling slicing entirely would break windows larger than the texture
size limit.  It would be straightforward to support multitexturing of
sliced textures in Cogl when all the textures are identically sized
and sliced identically, if it became a priority.

63b1d6642c Improve handling of errors when calling CompositeNameWindowPixmap
To guard against CompositeNameWindowPixmap failing, just use an
error trap. Previous code used:

 GrabServer/GetWindowAttributes/CompositeNameWindowPixmap/UngrabServer

To prevent BadMatch errors from !viewable, but didn't check the
return value of GetWindowAttributes and didn't check if an error
occured during the error trap. This way is more correct and more
efficient.

3b864f8af5 Delay creation of overlay window until we are ready to show the stage.
The overlay window was created before the plugins are loaded. Because the
  composite extension immediately maps the window, we ended blanking the screen
  while plugins, etc., were loading. This commit reorganizes the code so that
  the overlay window is only created just before we are ready to show the
  stage.

  The significant impact of this change is that plugins cannot manipulate the
  overlay window during their initial loading, i.e., they cannot call the
  input-region API (the plugin should hook into the "show" signal if it needs
  to do anything of this sort).

  The commit also removes the XClearArea() call on the overlay window that
  seems to have served no real purpose.

Add 'hide_after_effect' flag to MutterWindowPrivate, tracking
whether the window needs to be hidden after all outstanding effects
finish.

Set or clear the flag as appropriate in clutter_cmp_set_window_hidden.

In mutter_window_effect_completed, if hide_after_effect is TRUE
and no other effects are in progress, hide the window.

0fdb644454 Make compositor private a GObject than a void pointer
Requiring the compositor private object to be a GObject allows the
return value of meta_window_get_compositor_private() to be used
via gobject-introspection, since the type and memory management
can be determined.

This allows a reverse mapping from MetaWindow to MutterWindow.

- Change meta_window_get/set_compositor_private to use GObject
  rather than void *
- Adapt code in compositor-mutter.c to match.

b41abfd1f8 [mutter-shaped-texture] Use the new material api instead of raw GL calls
Now that Cogl has the material API we can use Cogl calls for
multi-texturing instead of directly calling GL.

The MutterShapedTexture actor keeps a handle to a material with the
right combine modes for combining the texture and the shape
mask. Before each paint it sets the layers of the material to be the
two textures.

A second material with different combine modes 1is also created if the
pixmap is 24 bit to implement the workaround from commit 72da8c57.

66a5edd31a [mutter-shaped-texture] workaround multi-tex combine mode for RGB tfp textures
It seems that with the latest intel drivers when multi-texturing using an RGB
TFP texture, the texture is being setup internally as an RGBA texture, where
the alpha channel is mostly 0.0 so you only see a shimmer of the window. This
workaround forcibly defines the alpha channel as 1.0. Maybe there is some
clutter/cogl state that is interacting with this that is being overlooked,
but for now this seems to work. (Tested on i945 + DRI2)
