We currently expand the workspace switcher when workspaces are being
used, that is when there are any windows on a non-active workspace.
While this helps with the switcher's discoverability, it does eat into
the space available for window previews. By now the component should
be well established, so we can afford opting for space efficiency and
only expand the switcher while the user actually interacts with it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=783953
The overview's window picker is primarily about windows, and as the
previews that represent them are more effective the bigger they are,
it makes sense to scale down competing elements; start by reducing
the size of workspace thumbnails on the right ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=783953
Instead of potentially loading a background mid-way when it changes, and
loading it again for every file monitor event, leverage
CHANGES_DONE_HINT events, which allow us to ignore CREATED and CHANGED
signals from the file monitor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=747794
About every other situation can do with synchronizing keyboard visibility,
and keyboard layout changes are already handled internally in the Keyboard
object.
A downside of this approach is that once created, there will always be a
Keyboard instance and its full actor hierarchy. Seems reasonable to do that
since we can't tell it won't ever be needed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=785309
In case where a method- and property name overlap, using the method
is less unambiguous than I thought - mozjs52-based gjs will only see
the method, while mozjs38-based gjs will only see the property. We
are in luck though, and the real property name contains dashes that
allow us to refer to the property in a way that works for all gjs
versions.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=785090
Meson is on track to replace autotools as the build system of choice,
so support it in addition to autotools. If all goes well, we'll
eventually be able to drop the latter ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=783229
ClutterActor has both a has_pointer() method and a :has-pointer
property (that we represent as 'has_pointer'). So far gjs was
able to deal with the name overlap, but now trying to use the
property will instead test for the availability of the method.
Just avoid the conflict by switching to the method, which is
unambiguous.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=785090
We now cancel animations on override, however we also want to cancel
animations altogether on unmap (that is, when hiding the overview)
to avoid icons swarming into the void.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=736148
Until now we were waiting the animation to complete to allow the user to
make a new animation. This could bring some problems and annoy nervous
users.
Instead of that, destroy clones on new animations triggers and
create a new animation with the new direction.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=736148
The animation needs the icons' final positions, so we currently defer
it to a ::notify::allocation handler; however as starting the animation
during an allocation cycle would trigger a Clutter warning, it is
further deferred to a MetaLater. While this usually works, it is possible
that the allocation is already valid when we connect the signal, in which
case the animation is triggered at a later unexpected time. Switch to
a more robust ::paint handler instead, which also allows us to get rid
of the double-delay.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=736148
Any symbols (including class properties) that should be visible
outside the module it's defined in need to be defined as global.
For now gjs still allows the access for 'const', but get rid of
the warnings spill now by changing it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=785084
Symbols that are defined with 'let' are no longer visible outside
the module that defines them. To unbreak the code base, define all
non-private properties as global.

The first time that the session is started, it can happen that the
AT SPI hasn't been correctly initialized, and this results in a crash
when attempting to register the caret or focus listeners.
In order to avoid this, these changes check the result of initializing
the AT SPI, to allow further attempts when it has failed.

Customization of keycombo actions for strips/rings was lost in the
porting to new incarnation of Wacom support.
The UI here is slightly different, instead of requiring the user to
rotate/swipe in each direction to map each keycombo, the UI will
navigate the user through edition of both options, first one, then
the other.

Commit 39a840e2c3 added an additional parameter to shell_app_launch().
When adjusting callers, the parameter was also added accidentally to
calls of the confusingly similar g_app_info_launch() ...
Remove those to fix some warnings.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
The method currently catches errors that occur when calling the
extension's init() method, but throws itself an error if the
expected extension.js file is missing. The former is pointless
if we expect all callers to handle errors themselves anyway, and
we should avoid the latter if we don't - opt for the second option
and handle a missing extension.js file gracefully.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781728
While we catch errors that occur when calling init(), enable() or
disable(), the import itself can throw an exception, for instance
if the extension imports an unavailable typelib or tries to draw
in a conflicting library.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781728
Both reloadExtensions() and enableExtensions() are already expected
to catch extension errors. If they don't, this is the bug that
should be fixed instead of catching unhandled exceptions in the
caller.
This reverts commit ff425d1db7.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781728
Those will go away when we port authentication prompts to the new
MessageDialogContent widget, so pick the style classes from there
and adjust individual properties with more specific rules to re-
produce the existing style.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=784985
A lot of our modal dialogs share a similar structure:
[Icon] Some title
Maybe a subtitle
And sometimes even a body for stuff like
longer descriptions.
A dedicated widget with a common style will allow us to significantly
reduce duplication of both code and CSS.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=784985
This is the basic dialog actor implementation, which will allow us to
use the same implementation on the session-global modal dialogs. The
ModalDialog class now uses it underneath, and so do all users of it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762083
let trackChrome accept actors that are not children of chrome actors.
this will be useful for the MetaCloseDialog in gnome-shell, which
is already included in the MetaWindowGroup, but needs to be tracked
as chrome for the dialog to receive pointer events on X11.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762083
The actor allocation will be invalid on CLUTTER_TOUCH_BEGIN, because
it comes together with a CLUTTER_ENTER event that will recalculate
styles, and queue a relayout in result.
The net result is that on CLUTTER_TOUCH_BEGIN, the relayout has been
already queued, so the slider width comes up as 0, and the value ends
up as 1. Later touch events already happen on a validated actor, so
it is corrected. Still, not fun when modifying the volume slider on a
touchscreen.
Having descriptions with multiple lines will clutter
the view and make it more confusing for the user. Apart
from that, it also makes the search result a lot bigger,
potentially losing general vertical alignment.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749957
The classes extending the SearchResult can now connect
to the 'terms-changed' signal emitted by the SearchResult
class. This signal enables each object to update its
internal description in order to apply the bold style
onto strings that match the search terms.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749957
In order to prepare for applying the bold style to the part
of the description that matches the search terms, we need
to listen for the signal that announces the fact that the
search terms have changed. Given the fact that the
SearchResults class is aware of the changes regarding the
search terms, the classes that extent SearchResult need
to have a reference to it in order to listen for the
to-be-implemented 'terms-changed' signal.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749957
Since results are now much more concise and take up less
space, we can use the 'saved' space to provide the user
with more search results for each provider.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749957
The current separator uses a gradient effect as a separator
between search results. As the mockups suggest, the gradient
separator is no longer needed, in favor of a more simple one,
which is a thin semitransparent line.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749957
In order to match the current mockups, the providerIcon
class needed to include both the name of the provider
and the label that informs the user about how many more
search results are available for that specific provider.
The latter replaces the plus sign icon that has been
used so far.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749957
In order to make gnome-shell search functionality fit on
smaller screens, like those of devices, search results
need to take advantage of more horizontal space so that
any extra space can be used efficiently.
In order to do so, change the layout of the ListSearchResult
class from a vertical one, to a horizontal one and also
decrease the padding of the list-search-result-content css
class.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749957
If the padOsd is given a nonexistent ring/strip, things would fail
badly later when trying to paint a 0x0 StLabel. Just avoid creating
more ring/strip labels than those known by libwacom.
This is unlikely to happen, but seems better to protect against it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=782033
The porthole will not be destroyed when the scale factor changed.
That makes workspace thumbnail porthole still wrong size in the first
seeing after the scale factor changed.

PopupMenu needs special-treatment of certain types of menu items,
which it determines via children's _delegate property. However as
the calendar drop-down is very unmenu-ish, we use regular actors
rather than PopupMenuItems and the missing _delegate property
triggers a warning. Just add it as the bare minimum to make
PopupMenu happy.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
The destroy effect currently relies on a monkey-patched property
added from the map effect. However on X11 it is possible that we
did no map animation for a window that is destroyed when the shell
was restarted or had taken over from another WM. Just use the real
MetaWindow property to avoid a warning in that case.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
It's possible for updateRegions() to be called before monitors have
been properly initialized. Instead of throwing an error in that case,
just skip the strut computation (that doesn't make sense anyway without
a monitor).
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
findMonitorForActor() may be called before the layoutManager gets
to initialize monitors, so make sure the monitor index is in range
to avoid a warning.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
Don't try to access a non-existent engine - it probably makes sense to
use Map() instead of a plain object to track engines in the future, but
for now just add an additional check to shut up a warning.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
We only use lastItem() to reset the history index to the end, so
nobody noticed the utter nonsense in the return value until gjs
started to warn about it. As we don't actually use the value
anywhere, we could just remove it, but the function name implies
that an item is returned, so fix it to behave as advertised.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
We need to track the open-status of indicator menus, but don't want
to hook up signals more than once, so we check for the handler ID
we store on the object. As the property is only defined once we did
set up the signal connection, this check now logs a warning. We
can avoid it by checking for the existence of the property rather
than a particular value.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
To avoid recreating the app menu unnecessarily, the panel checks
whether the menu's current actionGroup already matches the target
one. However as the menu's actionGroup property is currently private,
the test always fails, whoops.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
We currently use "array[index]" to test whether an array has an
element at index before using it. However nowadays gjs warns about
accessing non-existent array elements, so the test itself already
produces a warning. Avoid this by checking the array length before
using an index to access an element.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
While we've always considered it good style to initialize JS properties,
some code that relies on uninitialized properties having an implicit
value of 'undefined' has slipped in over time. The updated SpiderMonkey
version used by gjs now warns when accessing those properties, so we
should make sure that they are properly initialized to avoid log spam,
even though all warnings addressed here occur in conditionals that
produce the correct result with 'undefined'.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=781471
The user list uses the same indication for hover and focus, so it
is possible for two items to be highlighted at the same time. Using
different styling would improve the situation, but only to some
extent - the user would still need to figure out which highlight
corresponds to which activation method. So instead, copy the
approach we use in popup menus and use a single property for
highlights that is updated by both focus- and hover changes.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=772284
It is possible to use the scroll wheel to adjust the volume without
opening the system menu, but there is no feedback other than the
icon itself in that case. To provide a less coarse indication for
the volume level, display the OSD window when adjusting the volume
while the slider isn't visible.

Since commit 2c070d38, we add a ClickAction to the visible AltSwitcher
button to track long-presses. As a result, we now have two components
that will grab and ungrab the pointer for the button, so to make sure
we don't end up with a stuck grab, we need to release the second's
component grab when the first activates.
Currently we only drop the StButton grab on long-press, we also need
to cancel any initiated long-press on click.

If the user fails to enter their password then hits escape, we
jump back to the user list, then ask again for a password in a

We currently assume that window state changes are accompanied by an
allocation change (triggered for example by the minimize animation).
However this misses the case where a window actor is simply hidden
without any transition, as is the case with the 'show-desktop' action
for instance, so start tracking plain visibility changes as well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=783975
While the string returned by formatTime() should follow the locale's
text direction as a whole, the actual time part is always expected
to put hours on the left and minutes to the right. It is possible to
enforce that by inserting a left-to-right mark, but so far this is
only done by the Hebrew translation. So in order to not require all
other RTL translations to be fixed individually, just insert the
mark into the returned string ourselves like gnome-desktop's WallClock
code does[0].

There were some source IDs that were not being reset to zero when
removing the associated sources, resulting on some critical errors
being dumped when _realRecalculateWindowPositions() got called
after that point, via _delayedWindowRepositioning().
Ever since commit b8e29ae8c7
(I think), start up is littered with this message:
Gjs-WARNING **: JS ERROR: could not get remote objects for service
org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Smartcard path
since gnome-shell is now started before gnome-settings-daemon.
This commit addresses the problem by making the object manager code
not try to autostart its proxy, and instead wait for it to appear.

If the user fails to enter their password then hits escape, we
jump back to the user list, then ask again for a password in a
garbled screen. this commit fixes that by guarding against the retry
if the fail counter is reset.
This effect will only be created when the StScrollView actor has either
a non-zero vertical or horizontal fade offset defined, so we need to
add a null-check in these two cases before assuming it's there.

When using an SSH tunnel (through a SOCKS proxy) to funnel all
the outgoing traffic, we need the captive portal to not go through that
proxy, otherwise we can't go through the proxy because we're not

we're not connected through the proxy.
This fixes a blank captive portal window and no error reporting in that
particular configuration.

Commit b929320d4 added a toolbar item to force garbage collection,
however it won't be visible for most users, as it uses a non-standard

The fullscreen animation code is now generic enough to handle any
size change animations, so stop limiting it to (un)fullscreen to
get animations on (un)maximize as well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=766685
Currently, the translation values are set with the assumption that
one of the actors represents a fullscreen window. In order to
generalize it for any size change transition, we can simply swap
the monitor rect with the source or target rect as appropriate,
and translate the actor from the target to the source position by
subtracting the former and adding the latter.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=766685
Since there is already targetRect that represents where the
window is going to move, rename oldRect to sourceRect to
represent from where the window is moving.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=766685
If the popup happens to be mapped beneath the pointer, mutter will now
emit an implicit enter notify event (i.e. not caused by pointer motion).
In this case the switcherPopup still goes and selects the item, which
results in too sensitive alt-tab menus if the pointer happens to be in
the wrong place.
Make highlighting rely on motion events instead, so it always involves
user interaction when triggered by the pointer.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=755164
The solid black top bar we currently use works well for maximized
or tiled windows, as it puts focus on the application content by
blending into the monitor bezel. However it also visually reduces
the screen space, which is particularly noticeable when no window
is located nearby. Having the top bar blend with the background is
a better option in that case, so track window positions and add
some transparency when the top bar is free-floating.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=747163
And merge with the "internal" show/hide() ones. Those functions don't
proxy dbus method calls anymore, so it makes no sense to expose these.
Also, the timestamp is no longer needed as there is a single source for
these events.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=777342
The caribou daemon only gives us focus tracking, which is almost 1:1 with
our own FocusCaretTracker implementation. This means we can entirely
replace the Caribou daemon inside gnome-shell, reducing the Caribou
dependency to just libcaribou, and more specifically the
CaribouKeyboardModel we pull the keyboard models from.
As we still need underneath a CaribouDisplayAdapter to drive the keyboard,
reuse the wayland one, which has been renamed to make it look generic, plus
it will use the virtual input device API from mutter/clutter.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=777342
Some search providers such as GNOME Characters want to copy search
results to clipboard. However, on Wayland, clipboards are only
accessible from applications that have a visible surface on display.
This patch allows a search provider to request the shell to copy a
search result to clipboard when 'clipboardText' is included in the meta
of the result.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775099
We are moving the icon to be added before the text instead of after,
which is consistent with other menu items in other popup menus, such
as the ones in the system indicator's popup menu.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=782166
This allows passing an optional icon parameter to addAction()
so that a PopupImageMenuItem instance is created instead of a
PopupMenuItem if an icon is specified.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=782166
Add an extra check to setIcon() so that either a GIcon or an string
with the icon's name is handlded, so that we can create menu items
in different ways (e.g. by passing a GIcon created from a resource).

Since 5b3fb024be, the main window is only shown when not launched
with a valid UUID. As GtkDialog isn't meant to be used standalone,

the main window isn't shown; we can avoid the warning by setting
up the preference dialog manually instead of using the GtkDialog
convenience class.

So far, the GWeatherInfo was given the enabled weather providers
as a parameter, at construction time. Because of the way in
which libgweather was designed, setting the providers right from
the beginning enabled libgweather to use them internally in order
to update its state. Updating the internal state is only relevant
when there is a valid location set, which is not guaranteed at the
time when the GWeatherInfo object is constructed.
In order to fix this, enable no providers at construction time and
only set valid providers after setting a valid location.

Generalizing menu toggling via keyboard in commit 1d58ea25ab
fixed keynav in many places, but it turns out that it also adds
unexpected interactions in some cases where the source is not
button-like, as for example the entry context menus provided by
ShellEntry. Commit e33c68a415 fixed one case, however it is still
possible for plain enter/space to unexpectedly trigger the menu
if the entry itself doesn't consume the event, which is the case
when ClutterText:editable is false. However for a general fix, it
makes more sense to consider the source actor's :reactive property
and disable toggling menus via keyboard when they cannot be toggled
by pointer either - expecting non-editable entries to be non-reactive
as well seems like a reasonable assumption, and indeed all our code
follows that pattern.

Instead of using directories that we'll destroy when done, use the new

We also throw an error on startup, in the logs, if WebKitGTK is too old.

Our weather integration should follow GNOME Weather as closely as
possible, which means that we should respect its location permission
rather than using our own or none at all (which we can as a "system"
component and as geoclue's authorization agent).
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780252
It doesn't make sense to tie the proxy code for flatpak's permission
store to the location indicator, just because that was the first
component to use it, so split it into a separate module.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780252
The setting to globally disable location settings altogether isn't
handled by the geoclue service itself, but by the authorization
agent. This means that:
- it doesn't apply to system components
(which gnome-shell is now considered[0])
- it doesn't apply once the geoclue connection
has been authorized
However users can reasonably expect that we won't use location services
after they disabled them, so handle the setting explicitly.
[0] https://cgit.freedesktop.org/geoclue/commit/?id=a4cef6c0ad08https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780252
We currently use automatic location for weather forecasts if the
corresponding Weather setting is set, however we should take other
factors into account as well:
- whether location services are enabled at all
- whether Weather has been authorized to use them
In preparation of these changes, track the setting's value in a
separate property and make _useAutoLocation a getter, so we can
extend it with additional conditions easily.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780252
Setting GWeatherInfo:location to null helpfully doesn't mean
"no location", but "NYC". This obviously isn't what we want
to show users, so track the location validity separately and
consider it when updating the label shown to users.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780252
When using the 'disable-lock-screen' setting to lock down the screen
lock, the expectation is that users cannot lock the screen. However
as it turns out, all the setting currently does is hiding the lock
button in the system menu and making the lock settings in the privacy
panel inactive. That means that if the 'lock-screen-enabled' setting
isn't disabled and locked down as well, we will just continue to
lock the screen on inactivity - not to mention the keyboard shortcut
that isn't subject to that setting anyway.
Instead of expecting administrators to hunt down every possible way
of locking the screen and disabling it individually, we can easily
handle all cases by refusing to lock the screen when disabled by the
lockdown settings.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780212
Dragging and dropping app icons is expected to work anywhere over a
workspace, however overlaid elements are added to a separate hierarchy
and can thus block valid drop targets. This wasn't much of an issue
while we had just the window title, but since the addition of the
focus border, drops on window previews stopped working entirely.
Fix this by hiding all non-reactive overlay elements from picks.

We rely on the service to detect whether a fingerprint reader is
present. It is fine to not support fingerprint authentication
when the service is missing, but currently we don't handle this
case at all and end up with a non-functional login screen.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780063
Currently when the wifi selection dialog is open when the screen lock is
activated, the dialog remains visible above the shield. This is clearly
broken, so close the dialog automatically on session mode changes if the
mode doesn't allow settings (as changing the access point is arguably a
user setting).

The critical hint is meant to be used for notifications that must not
be missed - running out of battery being the prime example - so it
makes sense to ignore the policy in that case and make sure to always
show them to the user. This is consistent with blocking normal
notifications while showing a fullscreen window, but letting critical
ones through.

Whenever there's more than one pad in the same group (eg. Wacom ExpressKey
Remotes), show a popdown menu to allow configuring those extra pads.
Devices are hot-pluggable, so the popdown menu will update its state
whenever pads are added/removed.
Also, allow to quickly change between pads by switching to its OSD by
just interacting with them. Always given they are in the same group.

Telepathy's role has been diminishing continuously over the last
couple of years, so while chat integration is a nice feature for
those who use it, it is hard to justify keeping it as a hard
dependency. To address this, split out the component from the
client so we can handle missing typelibs gracefully by not
providing any chat integration.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=779878
If GeoClue is not responding for some reason, the callback of
Geoclue.Simple.new would not get called, meaning that _gclueFailed
remains false. This is preventing the fallback to the most recently
used location in gnome-weather, because it requires _gclueFailed to be
true (or auto-location to be disabled). So neither code path sets a
location and the libgweather default (New York City) is being used
instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=779898
For most notifications, banners are suppressed while the monitor
that is used to display banners is in fullscreen. With the old
message tray at the bottom, this used to be the bottom-most monitor,
but nowadays it's always the primary one, so update the corresponding
code to use the correct monitor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=779819
The telepathy integration was written at a time where gjs didn't
allow to inherit from GObject classes, which is why we needed a
C helper class. This hasn't been the case for a while now, so cut
out the middle man and implement Tp.BaseClient directly.

Commit c6f22826cf added a call to update() to refresh the notification
time for sent and received messages. However as it omits the bannerMarkup
parameter, escaped text like ''' now makes it through verbatim.
Rather than adding the parameter, we can just refresh the timestamp in
the existing update() call to fix the issue - it means the notification
timestamp is only refreshed for received messages, but that reflects
the text shown in the notification, which isn't updated for sent
messages either.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=779435
Media notifications currently always show the forward and backward
buttons as clickable, regardless of whether the corresponding action
is available or not. Media players usually address this by rendering
controls insensitive in this case, so do the same here.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=773884
Without the boxy background, event messages look a bit plain and
unaligned with other messages. Adding an icon addresses this,
however as repeating the same icon over and over again in case of
many events would be rather noisy, only show it for the top event
as in the mockups.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775763
Update the notification style according to the latest mockups:
- make notification icons smaller and prefer symbolic variants
- remove background box when not hovered/focused
- increase spacing between elements
- use normal text sizes
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775763
For notifications in the message list, it is usually less relevant
when exactly it occurred, but how long ago. So rather than showing
the exact time and expecting the user to figuring out the timespan
themselves, change the format to something human readable.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775763
Currently the secondary actor (if set) and the close button are
exclusive, that is the latter replaces the former on hover. As
the swapping feels rather busy and there's no real reason both
cannot be shown at the same time, keep the secondary actor always
visible.
A welcome side effect is that it no longer needs to be placed at
the end, so we can move the notification timestamp right next to
the corresponding title.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775763
The section titles usually don't provide a lot of value - messages
themselves are usually pretty unambiguous about their type, and
having a hidden shortcut to some settings panel or application isn't
essential either - except when showing the selected date when browsing
other days, as it adds context to the listed events. Based on that,
remove the section title as a general MessageListSection feature and
move it into the EventsSection, where we only show it when it is useful.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775763
We will eventually remove section titles from the message list to
reduce visual noise and give the actual information provided by
the messages more space. So in order to not lose the ability to
mass-dismiss messages, the latest mockups spot a "Clear All" button
at the bottom - implement that.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775763
The latest mockups contain a button to clear all sections at once.
As some elements cannot be cleared, we need to provide that information
to avoid offering an action that has no effect.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775763
Weather conditions - at least as far as online services are
concerned - don't usually change in a couple of minutes.
So when updating shortly after a previous update, assume
the current conditions are still valid and trigger an
update without showing a loading indication. This should
help a bit with not getting stuck permanently in loading
state when on a shitty network.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754031
Similar to the Clocks integration we've had in the date+time drop-down for
a while, the designs have called for a similar section that integrates
GNOME weather as well. Use the WeatherClient added in the previous commit
to implement that section and add it to the popover.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754031
In preparation of integrating GNOME Weather, add a helper class that
retrieves weather information according to Weather's configuration
if the application is installed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754031
In order to avoid distracting popup size changes while browsing
other dates, we freeze the size to the last size request. However
in case of more complex size negotiations - wrapping or ellipsizing
labels, scrollable elements etc. - there's a chance of stray calls
to get_preferred_width/height() that are not used for the actual
allocation. If such a call happens to be the last size request
before the layout is frozen, the saved size will be wrong. To fix
this, save the allocated size rather than the requested one.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754031
We want the width of the calendar column to be determined by the
calendar, other elements should adjust their allocation accordingly.
However neither ellipsization nor wrapping will kick in unless the
parent's width is restricted, so use a small custom layout manager
that enforces the desired behavior.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754031
As the telepathy integration picks up existing channels on startup,
ChatNotifications are another case where the real time the message
was received may be before the time it is picked up by the shell.
While this is less of an annoyance than restored GNotifications, as
it generally only affects restarts from the run dialog, it's an
easy fix now ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775799
GNotifications are persistent until dismissed or withdrawn, including
across restarts. As we show the time a notification was received in the
calendar, we need to include that information when serializing the
notification in order to be correct.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775799
Since the last notification redesign, we've been showing the time a
notification was received in the calendar drop-down. However as the
time is in fact added by the NotificationSection, it is actually the
time a notification was added to the list. Usually that difference is
not significant, except when previously received notifications are
restored on startup.
In order to be able to address those cases, we need a time that is
associated with the notification itself, so add a datetime property
that defaults to the current time, but may be set from an optional
parameter as well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775799
When gnome-clocks is installed, there is currently a race between the
GSettings schema being added to the database and the world clocks
session trying to use it. The prize if we win that race is an abort
in GIO, so use the newly added AppSettingsMonitor skip the race
altogether.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=766410
When integrating with optional components like Clocks, it is not safe
to access their GSettings right after the application became visible
to the AppSystem:
Installation is usually not atomic, so the .desktop file may appear
before the settings schema, in which case Gio will abort due to an
"invalid" schema ID.
To address this, add a small helper class that wraps the settings
access in a safe way.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=766410
The display configuration now exposes a setting to automatically
shift the display color at nighttime. As there are cases where
disabling the filtering temporarily is useful, it makes sense to
expose the feature in the system menu for quick access.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=741224
Update according to the latest mockups:
- don't use a border around the list as specified
by the latest HIG version
- use more generous spacing between controls
- allow extension descriptions to take up two lines
- drop GNOME branding from the window title
- make the app name consistent with the window title
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=778672
While the extension prefs tool is not meant as the primary way for
users to configure extensions - that will be Tweak Tool - it still
doesn't hurt to expose the extension kill switch to easily turn
extensions back on after a session crash.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=778664
When gnome-shell fails to start on login, gnome-session tries to
re-launch it again with all extensions disabled. This is currently
implemented by clearing the list of enabled extensions, which means
the user needs to re-enable their extensions manually again.
To make this process less annoying, add a single 'kill-switch' setting
gnome-session can use without interfering with the user setting.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=778664
On systems that support both shutdown and suspend, the latter operation
is currently only accessible via pressing the Alt key. As using the
keyboard may be inconvenient or simply not possible (e.g. on touch),
allow switching between alternatives via long-press as well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=721173
We currently assume that if a .desktop file has been renamed (that
is, it is in our rename list), the updated ID will be used. That
assumption was mostly sound when the list contained only GNOME apps
following the same release cycle as gnome-shell, but as applications
with less ties to the GNOME schedule adopt the reverse DNS notation,
it becomes more likely for apps to appear in the list before actually
being updated on the system. Handle this case by only renaming IDs
for which the replacement can be resolved to an existing application.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745626
The permissions hash is initialized after consulting the permission
store, however the lookup is skipped for requests that cannot be
resolved to an application, resulting in an error when accessing
the uninitialized hash for saving. Just make sure that the property
is always initialized to avoid that error.

GJS implements a basic signal system that allows monkey-patching

The following code is a syntax error in ES6:

Using a MetaWindowActor's shaped texture as the source for window
clones means that if there are further MetaSurfaceActor children
(e.g. a wayland client using sub-surfaces) they don't get cloned.
This obviously wasn't an issue until wayland clients introduced the
possibility of having multiple MetaSurfaceActors under a
MetaWindowActor but there's no fundamental reason we can't clone the
toplevel actor.
WorkspaceThumbnail.WindowClone is the one class that was already using
the MetaWindowActor instead of the texture although it seems to have
been an unintended change in commit
8b99617513.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756715
We have no guarantees on the number of ::size-changed signals that we may
receive, so the _sizeChangedWindow handler may run multiple times, which
leads to multiple calls to meta_plugin_size_change_completed(). So double
check the actor is not already being animated in the _sizeChangedWindow
handler to avoid reentrancy.

When a GNotification has the same ID as a previous one, it should
be shown as a new notification after withdrawing the old one.
However for this to work, we must not destroy the corresponding
source if withdrawing the old notification lets the notification
count drop to zero, so make sure the source is kept alive until
the replace operation has completed.

Clicking on calendar notifications might block till the DBus request times
out if the application being poked happens to be non-responsive. Perform
this asynchronously so we don't block if that is the case.
If an onComplete handler is passed to animate(), it is set to run at
the end of the animation via the icon grid's ::animation-done signal.
Currently the signal is connected after starting the animation, with
the result that the handler doesn't run when the animation completes
immediately (because there are no icons to animate). Fix this by only
starting the animation after connecting the signal.

We currently assume that the current view matches the 'app-picker-view'
setting. While that is usually the case, there is one notable exception:
While there isn't sufficient usage data (yet), we show all applications
instead of an empty frequent view regardless of the setting. We should
animate the actually visible icons in that case, not the (non-existent)
ones from the hidden frequent view.

Users are currently experiencing intermittent (and hard to debug) TLS
errors when loading the portal authentication page. This could be
caused by using http://www.gnome.org/ for our connectivity checks
because it redirects to HTTPS.
We can completely remove TLS from the equation by not using HTTPS.
http://nmcheck.gnome.org/ is a good choice because it doesn't redirect
to HTTPS and was created for NetworkManager's connectivity check.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=769940
Wayland clients can request their surfaces to be fullscreened before
commiting a buffer which means that we need to handle fullscreen
requests for which the old size is 0x0, preferably without warnings.
Since the mapping animation also runs for these windows, we can simply
bail out and ignore the fullscreen size change.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=770345
Wayland clients are in control of their window size so the existing
mutter plugin API, which assumes size changes are synchronous, doesn't
work for them since when our size-change handler runs the MetaWindow's
size isn't final yet.
To fix this, the mutter plugin API was extended with a size-changed
vfunc that lets us know when the MetaWindow size has actually
changed. This way we can make the window snapshot and get the old
window size on the existing size-change handler and later, on the new
size-changed handler, get the new size and start the animation.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=770345
Our animation code not only relies on the animation being loaded
(which we handle), but also on having at least one frame - otherwise
the computation of the next frame index will turn up NaN through
division by zero. Guard against this case by treating empty animations
as not loaded.

The top bar's network menu only supports a subset of device types

weird.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=773890
Any network devices appear as top level items in the system status
menu, so on system with an unusually high number of devices, the
menu can end up exceeding the available screen height. While this
is a corner case, leaving important system actions unreachable is
bad. The system menu does not lend itself to scrolling, so handle
this case instead by summarizing sections ("n connections") where
the number of devices exceeds a threshold.

The lightboxes used for screen blanking are created during initialization
and shown each time the screen should blank. During the (potentially long)

opened. To not exclude those elements from screen blanking, raise the
lightbox every time it is shown.

Since commit 67615a0cbc, any printable key can be used to lift the
screen shield rather than just escape/enter/space. While this is
convenient for unlocking where the input is forwarded to the password
entry, it is potentially dangerous when the screen is inactive but
not locked: If the user types her password, the first character will
lift the shield and the remaining input will go to the focused window.
To prevent this from happening, only allow printable keys when the
screen is actually locked and restrict the key presses that lift the
shield to the original set of escape/enter/space otherwise.

Apparently importers for the 'same' path are shared, even when the
relative paths resolve to different absolute ones. Until this bug
is fixed properly, we can work around this by expressing the current
extension path as the UUID relative to the parent directory.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=772386
You can define a new importer object by importing a subdirectory in GJS.
This is undocumented, but it is likely to at least hold until the whole
thing moves to ES6 modules, after which we'll be able to do this purely
in JS with Reflect.Loader.
Since this was the only thing the ShellJS library did, we can remove it
altogether.
This allows us to discontinue use of the gjs-internals-1.0 embedder API.

If Bluetooth is on but there aren't connected devices, the status in the
menu reads "Not in Use". This is potentially confusing: it's a negative
statement, even though Bluetooth is on. It also sits uneasily (and looks
even more confusing) next to the submenu item "Turn Off".
Changing the string to "On" is better.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756432
This allows us to pass metadata fields besides the message
to log. So, if the log() call is made from an extension,
pass the extension name and UUID to the logger.
This is useful for extension developers to debug their code
as well as to instruct their users to send debug info to them
by running something like this:
journalctl GNOME_SHELL_EXTENSION_UUID=<extension@uuid>
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=770717
Currently it's assumed only an extension can call this method. However
it can be useful if any part of the shell want to know if it was invoked
by an extension.

We currently rely on the "monitors-changed" signal of LayoutManager to
relayout the OSD window. That is not enough, since the scale factor also
changes the way the OSD window is sized, and that can be updated after
"monitors-changed" has been received.
The visual effect is that under some circumstances, the OSD window will
have the wrong size under HiDpi.
This commit fixes the issue by triggering another relayout when the
scale factor changes.

Similar to bug 667552 for the app switcher, attached modal dialogs

its last-used timestamp is not taken into account for the position

Both 'cycle-group' and 'cycle-window' shortcuts allow cycling through
windows on all workspaces. While this works, it looks quite broken
since we started showing clones for highlighting: the selected window
vanishes (when its clone is destroyed), then slides back in with its
workspace. Instead, slide the selected window to its workspace like
we do for the 'move-to-workspace-*' shortcuts.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=771536
Commit 3171819c improved window cycling by using a dedicated to clone

window actors are hidden while its clone is showing, and shown again
afterwards, however the latter is wrong for actors that are not supposed
to be visible (for example where the window is minimized, or on a different
workspace). Fix this by properly syncing the actor's visibility instead
of showing it unconditionally.

for the next button to be pressed on the username entry screen. Since
the signal handler that executes here is expecting the username to be
input, and isn't prepared for us to have switched back to user list,
various bad things happen. We try to start two gdm-password
conversations at once, for instance, one using the user's password as
the username. I stopped investigating here, because it's easy to fix by
disconnecting from the signal at the right time.

Since commit 82950ecea, we acknowledge pending messages when closing a
chat notification for a channel we are handling to prevent the channel
from popping up again immediately. While this isn't an issue for channels
we don't handle, the unread messages of the destroyed notification are
still considered for the messages indicator in the top bar, which is
clearly confusing (in particular when we end up showing the indicator
without any notifications in the list). As it's arguably correct to not
meddle with a channel handled by someone else, just reset the cache of
pending messages to address this issue.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=770888
Mutter's plugin destroy event doesn't happen if a window is hidden
when it gets unmanaged so we also need to handle the
MetaWindow::unmanaged signal to check whether the parent should
dimmed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=752524
meta_window_foreach_transient() iterates through all transients of a
window, not only direct transients. This means that simply checking if
a transient is an attached dialog isn't enough because it might be a
non-direct transient for the window we're checking, in which case we
don't want to dim the window.
In particular this fixes windows not getting undimmed when they have
more that one level of transient children and the direct transient gets
destroyed. In that case we would still find at least one non-direct
transient child and decide to keep the window dimmed.

Commit bd6e7f14d1 reimplemented the cycle keybindings to
fix cycling between more than two windows, but the approach
of highlighting cycled windows by actually focusing them has
the drawback that cycling messes up the MRU order of windows.
To fix this, only change the window focus when the operation
finishes, and use a dedicated actor that draws a border around
a window clone for highlighting.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=771063
There's no particular reason for this actor to be reactive and thus
preventing input events to reach actors underneath, e.g. quickly
clicking on something while the popup isn't yet finished animating
out.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=770382
Have it notify properly of changes to the current input source, as
well as exposing those in get_groups().
The support for virtual keyboard events has been replaced by

to the XTEST devices in X11.

If a sandboxed app requests access to some system resource (camera,
microphone, location), the portal frontend needs to ask the user
for permission. In GNOME, we want this to be a system modal dialog,
so provide an org.freedesktop.impl.portal.access implementation
that exposes a generic system modal permission dialog on the bus.

We currently use the :active pseudo class to mark the selected day
in the calendar. Whenever the selected date changes, the class is
added to the corresponding button and removed from all others.
However when the selected date doesn't change (i.e. when clicking
the already selected date), the buttons are not updated and the
use of the :active class conflicts with StButton's builtin handling
of the class - the class is removed on the button up event and the
button is deselected.
Fix this by simply using a different pseudo class.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746867
The last patch fixed marking days in the calendar where all
events are ignored, but it doesn't pick up the change when
an event is hidden. Emit an appropriate change notification
to fix this issue.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=768538
Ignoring events is currently implemented in the message list's
event section, which means that the calendar does not consider
ignored events when marking days with events. In order to fix
this, move the handling of ignored events to the event source,
which is shared between both components.

Commit 9b07ce1d0d broke the code that keeps the OSD window square.
Use that opportunity to move away from the hack of setting the
min-height style property from code and adjusting the width on
allocate, and implement a proper constraint instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=768317
ClutterActor:width is a floating point property, so it will not be
automatically rounded to non-fractional values that properly align
to pixels. To fix the resulting blurriness, add explicit rounding.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=768317
Commit 9b07ce1d0d changed the OSD window's level bar to be a regular
actor instead of a custom drawn bar. The bar actor's width depends on
both the configured level (e.g. 40%) and the available width, however
the width is currently only updated when the configured level changes.
Fix that by properly considering changes to the parent's width as well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=768317
Commit c39ffa111 moved the signal handling from the controls- to the
background-group to enable scrolling on non-primary monitors.
However this broke scrolling on reactive overview elements as the
workspace switcher, as they're not descendants of the background.
To fix, move scroll-event handling to the overview group itself,
which is the common ancestor of all overview elements.

When we restart, we need to update the struts for the screen before
we enter the main loop, or maximized windows will get resized to the
size of the screen without struts, then resized back.
A workaround is needed for a Clutter bug that occurs when we get
the size of an actor before the first paint of the stage.

The memory which MetaBackground resides is freed automatically, when its
wrapper object Background is freed by garbage collection. But because the
memory for MetaBackground is huge, changing the background or changing the
background mode repeatedly makes a lot of memory to be in use until garbage
collection runs.
This patch frees the MetaBackground object explicitly when its
MetaBackgroundActor is destroyed which is the moment that the memory in the
object is not used anymore.

We allow activating a workspace by clicking it when we know that
the user did not try to select a window and missed (namely: the

empty workspace on the primary monitor, which doesn't make sense
when the click happened on a different monitor.

well.

Let's make it really simple and ask user interactively, once. This
simplifies things for:
* Privacy panel of gnome-control-center as it doesn't have to filter
applications.
* Apps: If they are denied access, they can simply point users to
privacy panel of gnome-control-center since they can be sure location
access for the app can be enabled in there.
Also it's less annoying to user. Before this patch, if they denied
access to application, they had to keep doing that at least each time
they launched the application.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762559
Alex told me that since it's not geoclue but rather GNOME-components
storing/accessing app permissions, it's better if we put it under
'gnome' rather than generic 'desktop' table.
Now that we no longer skip dimming/undimming windows while showing
the overview, we can still save a bit of work by changing the dimming
without animation while the window is hidden.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762475
We skip window animations while the overview is shown (and the window
group is hidden) to avoid unnecessary work. However when an attached
modal dialog is opened or closed, this involves checking whether the
parent window should be dimmed - skipping that test means that we can
simply fail to dim or undim a window altogether, so do that check
unconditionally.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762475
While we could have implemented this already a while ago, this would
have been a completely false security mechanism since we had no way of
reliably identifying applications. Since now with xdg-app, we can at least
reliably identify bundled applications, let's give users a choice of
which applications in particular they are OK with giving location data
to.
While we still can't reliably identify system (non-xdg-app) applications,
it seems extremely unlikely we'll ever be able to do that (at least not
in the near future) so we'll have to trust them to not lie about their
IDs.
Next release of geoclue will take the ID of bundled application directly
from corresponding xdg-app metadata so bundled applications can't simply
lie about their IDs.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762119
This class will be responsible for authorizing applications that try to
access location information. Since this is mainly targetted for xdg-app
applications, we make use of xdg-app's D-Bus API to store
per-application authorization.

implementing the new notification designs. Reimplement this
functionality as a dedicated "Media" section in the message

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756491
Currently both the base classes for messages/sections and the message
list itself that instantiates the available sections are located in
the same module. As a result, it isn't possible to define sections
in a different module without introducing circular dependencies. The
Calendar module is already unwieldily large, so split it up a bit to
avoid it growing even bigger in the future.

We are already emitting a 'drag-end' signal when no more dragging

The Next and Sign In buttons are disabled when the username/password
field is empty. However, the user can still bypass this button by
pressing the enter key, leading to some odd glitches with the log in

This is easy to fix by simply not progressing to the next screen when
the button is disabled.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746180
Before reenabling all extensions, we update the list of enabled extensions
to catch any changes that happened while extensions were enabled. However
this is currently broken as onEnabledExtensionsChanged() is a nop while
disabled, so just call getEnabledExtensions() directly.
draggable.startDrag() is called directly here (i.e. manualMode is not set),
we must keep track of the touch event and pass it to startDrag() then.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756748
We need to keep track of the pointer emulating touch sequence. In order
to have events properly redirected on touch devices, the
Clutter.grab_pointer and ungrab_pointer() have been replaced by the grab()
and grab_sequence() ClutterInputDevice methods, one or the other is used
depending on the device triggering DnD.
An extra "sequence" argument has been added to startDrag, passing null here
will resort to pointer grabs.
This is enough to make thumbnails in the WorkspaceBox draggable through
touch.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756748

Generally a user-changed operation will be uninteresting, but if the
user is currently in the user list and the account changes to locked, we
want to remove it from the list, or if the user is not in the list and
the account changed to unlocked, we want to add it to the list. This
fixes the case where a new user account created in gnome-control-center
does not appear in the user list. The password mode is set in the new
account immediately after it is created, but the operations are not
atomic, so the login dialog considers the new user account when it is
still locked and rejects it from being displayed, then immediately
afterwards the account is unlocked. This commit causes the login dialog
to show the account when this occurs.
The containsUser() check here is not strictly necessary, but reduces
spurious calls to addUser() and removeUser(), since there's no easy way
to check if the locked status of the account has changed (as it's much
easier to connect to one signal on the UserManager than to
notify::locked on each User object).

Animated backgrounds are based on a start time in local time - in case
of a timezone change, that time is no longer accurate. To fix, we need

should be a rare event, so go with the simpler second option.

LoginDialog has a private _user, but UserListItem has a public user.
Easy to get wrong since _user would be the right thing to type in 90% of
this file.
Any time estimates we can come up with are notoriously unreliable;
even on devices that report correct (dis)charging rates, any change
in workload, screen brightness etc. can throw our estimate off by
a huge amount. This is further compounded by bad firmware and battery
firmware which reports inaccurate data as neither Windows nor Android do
not use that data.
So instead, limit ourselves to only showing the current percentage
and leave its interpretation to the user.
As an added bonus, we end up with shorter strings that are less likely
to cause problems with ellipsization when translated.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708472
Builtin chat and network notifications already follow the notification
policy of appropriate applications, it makes sense to do the same for
autorun notifications to give users control over hotplug notifications
in Settings.
If we detected that Bluetooth devices were setup, show the Bluetooth
menu so that users can easily turn Bluetooth back on.
This is a bit of a hack, as we cannot detect whether there is a
Bluetooth adapter at all when it's disabled, so we cannot tell whether
there were any Bluetooth devices setup, at some point. This state is
saved in the gnome-shell GSettings in the had-bluetooth-devices-setup
key.
Checking whether we saw Bluetooth devices at one point is a good
enough guess of whether there will be some in the future.

It's very unexpected that a spinner animation would
preempt idles from running.
This commit runs the spinner animation with a low
priority to ensure it doesn't take over the main
loop.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754814
Right now the spinner animation updates every 14ms.
60 frames per second would be one frame per 16.667ms,

This commit changes the wakeup to happen after 16ms.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754814
If the source actor is sized 0x0, the grabHelper will close the menu
on button release if the menu ends up flipped because in that case the
release event happens when the pointer is neither over the source
actor (since it's 0x0) or over the menu actor. A zero sized source
actor works for the non-flipped menu case because the menu's actor
itself ends up underneath the pointer.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756605
If we get another effect on the same actor, we should make sure to
remove the clone through the "overwrite" methods provided by Tweener, or
there will be a race that might end up with a stray clone being left
around.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756714
The translation should describe the difference between the fullscreened
and unfullscreened position of the window - however we are currently
assuming a fullscreen position of (0, 0) instead of the monitor's origin,
which causes glitches on dualscreen setups.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756697
Some labels in the system status menu - namely network names - are out
of our control, and may thus grow the width "infinitively" unless we
restrict the menu width. So far we have been doing this by setting a
fixed width or max-width, but any value we put there might end up
being too restrictive in some locales. Instead, request a width that
fits all the labels we want to show unellipsized and use that instead
of an arbitrary limit.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708472
We use the newly introduced feature from Mutter to hook up our own
fullscreen and unfullscreen animations.
To give the illusion of a transition as smooth as possible, we create a
snapshot of the current contents of the actor before its state is
changed, and crossfade between the two states while the size changes.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707248
StIcon will skip loading the texture when its theme node is unset (which
may happen on style changes while the widget is hidden). While our size
request to compute the dash icon size will create the icon's theme node
if necessary (and of all its parents), a missing texture can still throw
off our computation.
Make sure this doesn't happen by ensuring the icon's style first, so the
texture is updated in response to StWidget::style-changed if necessary.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745649
When adjusting dash icon sizes, we compute the icon padding by subtracting
the configured icon size from the first icon actor's preferred size. To
make sure that the preferred size correctly corresponds to the current
dash icon size even while the icon is animating, we enforce the size
before the size request. For that we used to temporarily manipulate
the icon texture size directly, but commit e92d204d42 cleaned this
up to use the setIconSize() method instead.
This does not work however, as the icon actor's iconSize property will
always match the dash iconSize property, making the method a noop. So
go back to the original approach of enforcing the texture size to make
sure we always base our computations on correct values.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745649
There is nothing particularly critical about this notification, it
was only marked as such to get certain behavior like auto-expanding
and sticking-around to be acknowledged by the user (as it offers
more actions than the summary notification, so it is frustrating
when it goes away because it was missed).
As all notifications will now stay visible until we are sure the
users has seen them, the latter reasoning no longer applies.
Auto-expansion doesn't appear too important and may even be considered
annoying by users, so remove the CRITICAL hint now.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657923
We are currently erroring out when the tab chain doesn't contain at
least one window for an app which might happen for windows that don't
take focus like xeyes. This leaves us in a state where we can't show
the switcher at all. Let's just ignore these apps instead of looking
broken.
While the GtkSettings::gtk-shell-shows-app-menu property is meant to
reflect a desktop capability (i.e. in the GNOME case: the app menu is
shown in the top bar), it is possible for users to overwrite it.
Respect the setting and actually hide the menu in that case.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745919
Refer to the system menu in the top bar as "System" rather than "Settings" as
it contains more than just settings and "Settings" is already used for the
settings panel. "System" is also used elsewhere, so include context for
translators.
The destroy signal handler is kept connected despite the NotificationMessage

Depending on the amount of accumulated NotificationMessages, this may lead
to temporary freezes or other more funky issues when recursion limits are
hit.

We only need the user verifier for the purpose of user verification.
Once it's complete we should clear it so it doesn't get in the way

We fade out the authentication prompt when a user successfully
logs into a user session. We reset it and fade it back in when
the user switches back to the login screen VT.
The problem is, we only fade it back in if the auth prompt status is
VERIFICATION_SUCCEEDED. It's possible for it to be NOT_VERIFYING
if the authprompt gets reset for some other reason in the interim.
This commit changes the check to be more precise. We now only skip
the fade-in, if we're already faded in, and we only skip the reset if
we're already reset.

commit changes the authPrompt cancel function to not
ignore such requests.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=752739
Normally the user isn't allowed to proceed passed
the username question until they've filled it in.
To ensure this, the authprompt code desensitizes
the next button when the number of characters change to
zero.
Unfortunately it fails to desensitize the next button
up front when the entry starts out empty.
This commit addresses that bug.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=752739
If the next button ever gets set to Sign In, it won't
get reset to next until the next question asked by pam.
This commit ensures it gets reset to Next when asking
for the username.

This object (not really a Clutter.GestureAction) sets up a captured-event
handler, which exclusively looks for 4 finger touchpad swipes, emitting
an ::activated signal under the same terms than WorkspaceSwitchAction.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=752250
We currently only cancel the user verifier on reset if
verifying, but that means we don't properly cancel it when
asking for a username at the Not Listed screen.
The object already handles getting called when there is
nothing to cancel, so just cancel it unconditionally.

shell_global_get_overrides_settings() may return %NULL in case of
custom shell modes (i.e. not the default and classic ones); while
this is not officially encouraged, we should still handle it rather
than throw an error.

The control center will call this method when the configuration dialog
for a display opens/closes, which will cause the same labels to quickly
fade out and in again, looking like it's flickering.
This commit fixes the issue by removing the tweens altogether.

In some cases we might be allocated a size such that
this._grid.topPadding and this._grid.bottomPadding are both 0 which
means that the ScrollView fade effect gets removed. In that case don't
try to access the effect since it will be NULL.

The menu items to move a window to the left/right workspaces were
removed when the window menu was implemented in GNOME Shell. This
is OK for the default vertical layout but not for alternatives.

And make these only handled on wayland. There's a plethora of issues
around touch passive grab and touch/pointer doubly handling to use
these right away on X11, so we stick to single-touch/pointer there.
This reverts commit 032a688a72.

Just reuse this gesture rather than implementing edge detection ourselves.
As a plus, we might get touchpad swipe support when Clutter handles it.

The menu is clearly associated with a particular window, so keeping
it around when the window is gone doesn't make sense - in case of
the window menu, it is actually harmful as every action will act on
the invalidated window and result in a crash. So just dismiss the
menu when the menu is unmanaged.

When chrome is added with the trackFullscreen parameter, the actor's
visibility will be updated automatically whenever its monitor's
fullscreen state changes. However as we currently ignore the fullscreen
state at the time the chrome is added, the initial visibility may well
be incorrect - fix this by updating the initial visibility as necessary.

Since the introduction of per-source notification policy in commit
098bd4509b, the NotificationPolicy::enable-changed signal has been
used to track the 'enable' setting. However as we never actually
emitted that signal, this never worked without a restart - oops.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749279
If we aren't the active session clutter can't animate and thus we
can't expect the shield to be shown before releasing the suspend
inhibitor so we should release it immediately when becoming inactive.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749228
The whole point of holding a suspend inhibitor is to be able to lock
before suspending.
Currently, when resuming we immediately take the inhibitor without
checking that we're locked which means that we won't be able to
release this inhibitor if we don't unlock at least once.
To prevent that and to better match the inhibitor's intention in the
first place, we can tie the inhibitor with not being locked. In
practice, we also want to let the locking animation finish before
suspending, so we'll tie the inhibitor with not being active
instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749228
This could happen if we are VT switched away and an animated
activation is requested because we're preparing to enter sleep. Since
we don't animate in this case we'd never reach
_completeLockScreenShown() before coming out of sleep, at which point
we _inhibitSuspend() again and would leak the previous inhibitor.

Commit 08690d658f generalized the banner-blocking behavior of the
dateMenu to all menus that would obscure the banner. However setting
up the 'open-state-changed' handler only when an indicator is added
does not work for indicators that change their entire menu (like the
app menu) - we currently end up with menus with no connected signal
handler, and throw an error when trying to disconnect an invalid
signal ID.
To address this, add a new PanelButton::menu-set signal and use that
to set up the 'open-state-changed' handler.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745910
For barriers like the hot corner which are made up of multiple axis
barriers, make sure that all the barriers have been left before
resetting the barrier.
We currently block banners while the time+date menu is open, as it
would obscure the notification. However it is not necessarily the
only menu for which this is the case, so generalize the behavior
to all menus that would overlap banners when open.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745910
As notifications appear in the time+date dropdown's message list, there's
a strong relationship between notification banners and the menu. However
while the time+date menu is centered by default, which matches the banner
position, its actual position depends on the session mode - in particular
it is moved to the right in classic mode.
Reinforce the relationship in these cases by moving notification banners
underneath the time+date menu.

According to systemd logind's documentation, the CanSuspend() method
"returns 'na' in case "the operation is not available because hardware,
kernel or drivers do not support it", while "'no' is returned if the
operation is available but the user is not allowed to execute it".
See http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/logind
Thus, we need to return true here when the reply for the CanSuspend
method is neither 'no' nor 'na', or we would providing false positives
in cases where suspension is simply unsupported.

Unlike entries in the calendar's message list, banners are not subject
to the normal keynav chain, and making the banner actor itself unfocusable
allows for the focus to be moved to the action area when expanded.

Resident notifications are not really a thing anymore with the new

libcaribou was designed to generate X events which works under wayland
sessions for X clients but obviously doesn't work for wayland clients
and for shell chrome.
This patch adds a simple caribou display adapter which inherits from
its X display adapter and allows us to continue to work for X clients
and at the same time makes the OSK work on shell text entries by
sending key events directly to the focused text actor.
Making the OSK work for wayland clients requires much bigger changes
at various levels in the stack and either not using libcaribou or
re-working it substantially so that's left for future work.

Sources are destroyed with their last notification. This is usually the
correct behavior, however in case of chat sources, the corresponding
telepathy channel might still be open, and any further messages that
should trigger a notification are lost because chat sources are only
created when telepathy's channel dispatcher notifies us about a channel
(via ObserveChannels).
Loosing messages like this is unexpected, so keep chat sources around
even without notifications while the channel is open.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=747636
Currently the lifetime of a chat source and its single notification
are tied together. While this apparently makes sense, it means we
will lose all follow-up notifications when a source is destroyed
with the corresponding telepathy channel left open. We will fix this
soon by tying the source to the channel's lifetime rather than the
notification, prepare for this by recreating the notification if
necessary.

It's possible for a user to type their password so quickly
that GDM hasn't even had time to ask for the password yet,
much less have time to process the answer.
In that situation, we tuck the user response away as
_preemptiveAnswer, and pass it along to GDM when GDM is finally
ready for it.
The problem is, there's a bug in the code, where we send
null for the service name in the answer, instead of the right
service name (say "gdm-password").
This commit addresses the bug by making sure we don't pass the
answer along, until the service name is properly set in
_queryingService. To ensure that, answering query (answerQuery)
based on _preemptiveAnswer has been shifted right below
this._queryingService = serviceName;

We don't need a different GSettings object for each app or
favorite item.
While it practice it does not change much (AddMatch is still
obviously sent out), it minimally reduces the overhead on
changes, and makes for cleaner code.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746509
In recent glib, change notifications don't actually happen unless all
keys have been read, in an effort to reduce unnecessary dbus
traffic for shortlived GSettings object and avoid AddMatch calls.
But we care about changes here, so we need to make sure we're
subscribed, and an easy way to do so is to reuse the same object
to watch for changes and to load the active providers at startup.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746509
When introducing support for "default disabled" search providers
this part was overlooked, so enabling a default disabled provider

When the chat app is focused, we should hide all banners immediately.
A good way to do so, without tracking which app is focused, is
to look for messages that are acked when the banner is unexpanded,
which implies they were acked by some other telepathy client.

Pause dynamic workspace management while workspaceSwitcherPopup
is shown so as to eliminate infinite creation and destruction of
workspaces, thus preventing stuttering while trying to move a
window to last workspace.
Add _isWorkspacePrepended flag to make sure only a single workspace
is prepended at a time thus preventing the possibility of prepending
infinite workspaces while dynamic workspace management is on pause.
Prepend a new workspace by creating a new workspace instead of only
shifting the windows to next workspace so that the workspaceSwitcherPopup
may appear in sync with what's happening behind the scene and display
correct number of workspaces.

To switch workspace by keyboard in the overview, the user currently

Currently the menu position below the button means that the menu
can extend to roughly half the screen height before ending up partly
off-screen. This is plenty of space for commonly installed sessions,
but some users have a significantly higher number of sessions in the
list. Move the menu to the side of the button in that case to maximize
the vertical space the menu may take up.

There is currently no way to trigger an icon's right-click menu by

While legacy status icons lack a proper accessible name of their own,
we can try to find the corresponding application or the icon's window
title - hopefully most status icons provide at least one, so they
don't show up completely "blank" in screen readers.

g-s-d has been taking care of this for us but in a very hackish way
that causes dconf writes on every startup and also doesn't handle
dynamic updates to locale1's properties which has become a problem now
that GDM keeps its greeter session running in parallel with users'.
To take care of this properly, this commit introduces a settings
abstraction with both system and session implementations. The session
implementation just wraps access to the existing gsettings while the
system one gets its values from org.freedesktop.locale1's properties.

Since commit 75745fc23f, the bodyStack itself is no longer start-aligned
to not break custom body actors like chat notifications. However we still
want "normal" body actors start-aligned to get the correct RTL behavior.
We now stopped using notification actors directly for anything, so
we can simplify the Notification class significantly by turning it
into a purely informational object others can use to built their UI
representation from.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746343
Since we stopped special-casing chat notifications to use the old
notification actor, we need to provide a notification banner to
maintain the inline chat functionality, so split out the UI from
the existing ChatNotification class.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746343
Special-casing banners of resident notifications was really a
thinly veiled special case for chat notifications, as those were
still using the old notification actor which coupled the life-time
of the notification to its actor. This is no longer the case, so
we can do the sane thing and destroy banners once they are no
longer needed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746343
Passing null as body always meant clearing the existing one. While this
mattered less with the old message tray which used the expanded actor,
the new message list in the calendar uses the unexpanded body. We clearly
don't want that to disappear on icon changes, so pass the existing one.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746343
We currently use the setActiveSession method to both mark a menu item as
selected, and also tell gdm about the current session the user selected.
Since gdm is ultimately in charge of the state, we should decouple this
and simply ask gdm to set the session, and have the menu item reflect
what gdm thinks is the current session.
This prevents state getting mismatched and oscillations from happening,
where we get in a loop of constantly telling gdm what the session is.

While legacy status icons are notoriously bad with regard to

Currently dismissed events will simply reappear when browsing
back and forth between dates, which is clearly broken. Instead,
hide events that have been dismissed permanently. For now, we
simply store a list of ignored IDs ourselves, until we get API
in evolution-data-server to reliably store custom per-event
properties.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744927
If the action was initiated by the user, we want to show the
modal dialog immediately, while if the action was initiated by
NM autoconnection policy we first show a notification and then
show the dialog when needed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=660293
The design calls for differentiating between dismissable reminders
and permanent events, based on whether the selected date is "today"
or some other day.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744927
While messages in the EventsSection are currently simple enough to
use the generic Message baseclass, the design calls for events to
only be dismissable on the current day. We will need a subclass to
implement this behavior cleanly, so add one.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744927
As the design calls for slightly different behavior for the current
day, move the _isToday() function out of MessageListSection to have
it available elsewhere as well ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744927
Currently the clear action in the section header simply removes all
messages from the section. While the result looks exactly as if the
close button of each individual message had been clicked, the messages
are not actually closed - after a restart (or some other condition that
triggers a reload), the messages simply reappear, which is confusing.
Do the expected thing instead, and make clear close all messages in the
section.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746027
Currently a message can only be closed by its close button. However
as we want to make a section's clear action synonymous with clicking
the close button of each individual message in the list, we will need
to expose the close action, so add a corresponding method.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746027
Currently closing all messages is subtly different from clearing
a section, which is confusing. Start making the behavior more
predictable by only showing a close button in the message when
the section's clear button would remove it.

This closes a race between setTerms and a slow GetInitialResultSet.
The bug manifests as follows:
- initial search for a short string
- previous results === undefined, call GetInitialResultSet
- user types more, cancel previous search in setTerms()
- mainloop, then _gotResults([])
- previous results === [], !!previous results === true
- therefore call GetSubsearchResultSet with an empty list of results
- _gotResults() from GetSubsearchResultSet is empty
- much later, return from GetInitialResultSet is discarded by
cancellable
- user unhappy because what he searched for is not there
After this fix, the flow is:
- initial search for a short string
- previous results === undefined, call GetInitialResultSet
- user types more, cancel previous search in setTerms()
- mainloop, but no _gotResults
- previous results === undefined, call GetInitialResultSet again with
longer string
- some time later, return from first GetInitialResultSet is discarded
by cancellable
- soon after, return from second GetInitialResultSet comes with good
results
- user happy

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746019
As we use two separate body actors for expanded and unexpanded
notifications, updating only one of them on notification updates
is not enough - if the notification has already been expanded,
we need to update the second label as well.
There's a strong expectation that delegating or presenting a channel
will result in a window being activated, so close both overview and
calendar as we do elsewhere.
Enabling line-wrapping of the unexpanded body is not enough to enforce
a single line when the text has embedded newlines, so replace these with
spaces (this is similar to setting ClutterText:single-line-mode, however
that would use a paragraph separator glyph instead).
If activateWindow() is called as the result of activating an item
in the Time & Date drop-down (most likely a notification), it should
behave as other items and close the calendar.
NotificationMessages set the icon either from the corresponding
notification's gicon property, or fall back to the source icon.
Except that we never actually set a notification's gicon property to
the provided icon, so we currently just always fall back, whoops!
If users click outside the search entry while it's empty we reset and
thus give up key focus. This means that when using an input method
with candidate popups, interacting with the popup with a mouse click
cancels the current input method context if there's no other text in
the entry besides the preedit string.
To avoid this we can check if the entry has preedit in addition to
checking if it has normal text.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745167
Ideally we would allow navigating into the button in the screen
reader case, so the configured clocks are read out properly.
However we can still do better than nothing short-term by pointing
to the section header as the button's label_actor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745393
Currently both the timestamp and the position in the notification list
are static once a notification has been added; however notifications may
be updated later, in which case those properties should be reevaluated.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745132
On locales that support it, time formats should follow the 12-hour/24-hour
preference, which implies that they should be updated when the setting
changes. So add another utility method which creates a label for a specific
time and keeps it in sync with the format setting.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745111
The world clock uses GLib.DateTime instead of the built-in Date type
because of the much superior timezone support, and therefore cannot
use the new formatTime() helper. To make this possible, modify the
method to support a parameter of either type.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745111
Replace the time formatting in notifications and events with the
new utility method - this makes sure that all times are now following
the clock-format setting and use LC_TIME.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745111
Displaying a time is more complex than it appears at first glance:
it should respect the user's choice regarding 12- our 24-hour format (but
only when supported by the locale) and follow the LC_TIME rather than the
LC_MESSAGES setting.
So rather than getting it more or less right in various places, it makes
sense to defer to a helper method which hopefully does the right thing. The
method added by this patch is based on _formatTimestamp in telepathyClient
with some minor tweaks:
- there's an additional params parameter which allows enforcing
a time-only format, even on dates other than the current one
- only a single desktop settings object is created and shared between
invocations
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745111
Currently scroll events during the swarm animation will make the
grid appear immediately in addition to the animating clones, and
there'll be a mismatch with the icon at the target position. This
badly breaks the illusion of launchers emerging from the dash and
positioning themselves in a grid - as scrolling icons "mid-air"
before they form a paginated grid doesn't make much sense anyway,
fix this issue by ignoring scroll events for the duration of the
animation.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745574
These notifications are annoying for the most part: presence
changes happen inside an app (empathy or polari), and that app
should have in app notifications for errors, instead of spamming
the global notifications.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745503
The previous code was applying the per row scaling factor of the current
row to the cumulative sum of all previous rows when calculating the y
position of a row. This resulted in the row being shifted up so it would
overlap other windows when the previous rows were not using the same
scaling as the current one.
Also the previous code was not considering that the spacing does not get
scaled when calculating the scaling factor. This is wrong as well and
could result in the overview overlapping the workspace switcher in
situations with lots of windows open.
This fix gives each row the appropriate height according to its scaling
factor and then ensures that the grid remains vertically centered after
losing some of its height.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744883
Clients can be expected to deal with the WM going away temporarily,
but not the display server - so when running as wayland compositor,
a restart is generally a fancy way of killing the user session, and
there's little we can do about it except for preventing the user to
shoot herself in the foot by throwing an error.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=741665
While those elements cannot be activated, they still provide useful
information to screen readers, so include them in the focus chain.
For the same purpose, set a more verbose accessible name, given that
it is not bound by the same space constraints as the visible label.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706903
It doesn't make much sense to show a section if it must remain empty
due to the session mode - there won't be any events if the session
mode disallows events, or notifications if those are disallowed. So
take the session mode into account and update the sections' visibility
accordingly.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745494
We currently show the world clocks section unconditionally, even when
the session mode disallows launching the Clocks app to configure the
displayed clocks. This does not make sense, so hide the entire section
when the session mode disallows settings.

Commit 5a8923ef95 removed support for legacy status icons from
the notification system, as we no longer want them to appear as
notifications. As we are unfortunately not quite at a point where
we can remove all support for them for good, so we now need an
alternative place to put them. Add a small dedicated tray at the
bottom which appears when any legacy status icons are active. By
default it is almost completely hidden to not interfere with the
user's windows, but can be expanded on demand to interact with
the icons.

polari is the GNOME app for IRC, empathy is for everything else
So prefer polari to empathy for IRC channels. We don't need
to check that either exists (even though polari is not a core
app) because mission control tries every handler if the preferred
one fails.
Depends on bug 745418 for polari to be mission control activatable.

Make sure the message list section is set to the current date
when opening the menu, otherwise the calendar might skip
the selected-date-changed event (because the day did not change)
which would leave the message list with an uninitialized date.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745412
Turns out this makes interaction with the OSK or candidate popups
using a mouse basically impossible since they get dismissed when the
key focus is captured by a window in the overview.
This reverts commit aeb9f5775f.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745245
Messages can be dismissed using a pointer device by clicking the
close button, there's no reason to not make the same action
available via keyboard as well. Delete looks like an obvious
choice ...

As it is impossible to interact with notification banners while a DND
operation is ongoing, we can temporarily hide the banner container from
picks so that DND works as expected even while a banner is showing.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744912
Since commit e189a34, the trayBox uses a Contraint to cover the primary
monitor's work area. This allows banners to be clipped so they don't
leak into monitors above the primary one during animations. However even
without being reactive, the trayBox now interferes with operations like
Looking Glass' object picker and overview DND.
With the trayBox no longer being positioned manually, there's no strong
reason to keep it in LayoutManager, and handling it in MessageTray allows
to hide the actor while no banner is showing, which helps with the issue
outlined above.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744912
The actor is supposed to be hidden while no notification banner
is displayed, and in addition to that when banners are temporarily
blocked (because the calendar is open). However the current code
always shows the actor when banners are not blocked, fix that.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744912
The screen should be woken up when a new notification is shown on
the lock screen, but not when a notification arrives while disabled.
Add a missing condition to fix.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744114
The problem is caused by '_askForUsernameAndBeginVerification' being
called multiply times. So when we click 'next', the old connected
function will also be executed.
The mode is never set after the removal of the bottom tray, so it
no longer makes sense to pass it to allowKeybinding(). We can also
safely remove it from the ActionModes flags altogether without
requiring a synchronized update with gnome-settings-daemon, as
the latter never used any flag value above LOGIN_SCREEN.
When it comes to keybindings or gestures, there's not really a good
reason why popups associated with the top bar should behave differently
from any other shell menus. Just set the action mode generically for
all menus, so actions like screenshots or media-keys start working
with menus like the background- or app launcher context menus.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745039
We reuse the old body text on useMarkup changes and for expanded
labels. However just taking it from the label actor does not work
when markup is used, as once applied it will be stripped from
ClutterText:text.
So to preserve markup, keep our own copy of the original string
around.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744907
Markup in notification titles is not support (and never has been).
Therefore the text is run through g_markup_escape_text(), and as
a result we do have to use markup internally to correctly show
legal-but-escape characters like '&' or '"'.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744894
The message indicator conveys that the message list contains unseen
messages that will not be shown as banner. So its visibility depends
on two factors: the number of unseen messages, and the number of
messages waiting in the queue to be shown as banner. As we currently
only update the visibility on changes to the former, the indicator is
not always accurate - for instance sources notify count changes before
passing on a notification to the message tray for display.
To fix, add a signal to the message tray to notify when the queue
changes and use it to update the indicator's visibility.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744880
Chat notifications are king of custom, so we'll leave them out for now
and keep using the old banner. However we can port the subscription
notification.
Hotplug notifications use custom notification banners to include
application icons in buttons. Bring those back by providing an
appropriate createBanner() implementation.
While we want to encourage the use of regular notification banners,
some of our built-in stuff does require more or less customized content
("more" being chat notifications, a.k.a. king of custom).
Account for this use case by delegating banner creation to a method,
so either Notification or Source subclasses can overwrite it.
Nothing except for the chat notification is really custom, so stop
specifying the flag for anything else - it will soon become a bit
harder to create non-standard notifications, so don't do it for no
good reason (discouraging this is of course the reason for making it
harder in the first place) ...
Instead of using the notification's own actor as a banner (and
keeping it around after the banner was displayed to not dismiss
the notification itself), create a separate banner actor from
the information the notification provides, just like we do for
lock screen and message list notifications.
This change breaks notifications with custom content, but only
temporarily - we will soon provide a hook to allow customizations
again.
We no longer have a single notification actor that is either displayed
as banner or reparented to the summary depending on state - both the
lock screen and the notification section of the message list create
their own UI based on the information attached to the notification
object. Adding to this that different representations of a notification
may now exist simultaneously (as they are included in the message list
immediately rather than after the banner has been displayed), it no
longer makes sense to keep the banner actor in the notification itself.
Add a new NotificationBanner class that provides a separate banner
implementation based on the message list's NotificationMessage that will
soon replace the existing notification banners.
Both the screen shield and the notification section in the message
list create their own UI for notifications rather than using the
notification actor itself. Currently there is no clean way for such
representations to include notification actions - we will need this
as we will soon use a separate actor for banners as well, so keep
track of actions added via addAction().
Notifications in the message list cannot be expanded, however we will
soon use NotificationMessage to re-implement notification banners, where
we still want actions and expanded content.
While this functionality logically belongs to the future banner subclass,
it is cleaner and easier to have the basic support in the base class.
This also leaves the door open for expanded notifications in the summary,
should that become a thing again.
The panel is not visible when in fullscreen, but critical notifications
may still be shown - having them pop out from where the panel would be
looks unpolished, so adjust the trayBox accordingly.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
It was removed as actors that should not affect the input
region can simply be added to the uiGroup instead. However
the property is useful to add non-reactive chrome, but then
use trackChrome() to add a child to the input region.
This reverts commit e62d22a50e.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
Occasionally it makes sense to constrain to a monitor's work-area
rather than the entire monitor, so implement that behavior and add
a property to turn it on.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
St's hover tracking uses ClutterInputDevice, which unfortunately may use
an outdated cursor position to determine which actor is hovered. Using
MetaCursorTracker instead would fix this, but would require linking St with
libmutter - avoid this for now by manually fixing up Clutter's view of
the pointer position in the case where we rely on it working properly.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
While applications can no longer spam the users with a constant stream
of banner notifications, it is still possible to drown the summary in
the message list. Avoid this by limiting the number of notifications a
single source is allowed to display simultaniously.
test-xy-stress in libnotify's tests suddenly became fun again ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
We want to shield users from being overloaded by an overwhelming stream
of notification banners, either due to coming back from idle/lock or
because an application is misbehaving. Previously we replaced all queued
notifications with a summary notification in that case, but now that
notifications appear in the summary immediately, we can simply stop
adding them to the queue and rely on the date menu to convey that
information to the user.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
The summary may contain notifications that have not been seen by the user
and won't be shown as banner. Currently this is only the case for resident
notifications that are emitted by the focused app, but it will become more
common as we will start limiting the number of queued notifications.
Indicate to the user that more notifications are available by displaying a
small dot in the top bar button.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
Source::count-updated is emitted as notifications are added or removed,
which is correct for the primary notification count. However it is not
for the unseen count, which will also change when a notification is
acknowledged without being removed. At the moment this does not matter,
as the unseen count is only used on the screen shield and notifications
are never acknowledged while the screen is locked. However we will soon
use the unseen count in the normal session as well, so emit the signal
in this case too.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
The message tray is now empty and about to be removed, so an indication
at the bottom edge of the overview becomes an odd location to convey the
status of the summary. We will eventually display an indication in the
top bar that unseen messages are available, for now just remove the
existing indicator.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
Using a "There are too many notifications" notification is a bit odd,
and we will address the issue differently soon. So rather than update
the notification to do something else than opening the mostly empty and
useless tray when clicked, remove it altogether.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
No Source subclass used it to do anything special, and with sources
no longer having any UI representation on their own, doing anything
else isn't useful either, so just kill off that hook.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
It was a nice feature, but with sources no longer being represented in
the UI, there is no longer a way for users to make use of it. If we want
to bring the feature back in the future, it would probably make more
sense to implement via the chat source's policy anyway.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
Since the summary area was removed from the message tray, Source are not
longer represented in the UI, so right-click menus and summary icons are
no longer a thing.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
The notification list in the calendar drop-down now functions as summary
area, so we can drop it from the message tray and remove a lot of complexity
from the state machine.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
There is not good reason why activating a GTK+ notification should
behave fundamentally different from fd.o notifications - we don't
raise the app because we expect it to perform an appropriate action,
but that does not include closing overview or calendar for us ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Just like we leave the overview when activating a notification,
the calendar popup should be closed - after all, the only case
where the calendar is open when a notification's default action
is activated is the user clicking an entry in the message list's
notification section.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Display notifications that have not been dismissed in the message
list - eventually this will replace the existing message tray summary.
Notification messages show icon, title and one line of the body and
can be clicked to activate the default action. However they cannot be
expanded, so other actions or the full body text are not accessible
in this mode.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Since notification support was added to the lock screen, notifications
are no longer necessarily represented by the actual notification actor
anymore. However when an existing notification is updated, external
representations currently become outdated.
Emit an appropriate signal which allows them to update.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
When we will start to show notifications in the date drop-down, we
will not use the actual notification actor, but construct our own UI
based on Calendar.Message. This is similar to what we already do in
the lock screen, except that in this case clicking the notification
should activate the default action.
So rename the existing _onClicked() method to activate() to make it
clear that such use is acceptable. While not strictly necessary, also
rename the corresponding signal to match.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
As the popup's height depends on its content, which itself varies
depending on the selected day, browsing the calendar can result
in distracting size changes. To avoid this, the design calls for
the height to be frozen to the previous one in that case.
As the popup will always open with the current day selected, we
don't have to be very sophisticated and can just lock the popup
to the height corresponding to that day.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
The message list is not only a replacement for the calendar events
list, it will also take over the notification summary from the
message tray. As we start drawing events from other sources than
calendars, hiding it based on whether or not any calendars have
been set up is no longer appropriate, so always include it in the
calendar drop-down now.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Turn the existing EventsList into a MessageListSection and add the
message list to the calendar drop-down. The new events list only
displays events for the currently selected day, but in a more
structured and friendlier way than the old one.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
The message list is a scrollable list that will hold sections of
different types of time-related messages like notifications,
calendar events or birthday reminders. When no section displays
any content for the selected date, a placeholder is shown instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
We will start using both URLHighlighter and the _fixMarkup() helper
method the same way it's used in MessageTray. Usually we should
make fixMarkup() public and call the existing methods, but we are
planning for them to go away soon, so just keep two copies until
the original one is removed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
We will soon replace regular menu items in the calendar drop-down
with more complex elements.
However there will still be items that should close the drop down
when activated - rather than making the menu available throughout
the hierarchy (and eventually from outside as well when we add the
notifications list), have a public method on a global object just
like the ubiquitous Main.overview.hide().
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Menu items are on their way out of the calendar drop down, so let's
start with the easy one. This one is removed without replacement,
but then the Date & Time panel should be a one-time stop for most
users anyway, so not having a direct shortcut should not be much of
a problem. It is also the last remaining Settings item outside the
system menu ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
The new design has the events list on the left and the calendar on the
right, so swap them around and remove the vertical separator between
them in favor of some additional whitespace as in the mockups.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
This used to be the style-class for status icons (i.e. icon-only
top bar items). It got unused a while ago when the class used
by status icons stopped using it - except for the keyboard indicator,
which set the class manually to appear as status icon despite not
being a real icon.
Now that the button highlight is provided by the .panel-button class
on a parent, the obsolete class results in a double border on the
keyboard indicator when active - just drop it from there as well
to fix.
So we can style it differently than :hover.
We already have a active state for the menu items which includes
more than hover. For example, when the keyboard focus moves to a item
or we select programatically a item.
For this reason we need a style class named active for the meaning we
give to it in menu items, and a pseudo class active with the meaning
CSS has.

This capability was only really useful for media players, and with
music notifications no longer being special, we can simplify a bit
by removing support for it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744815
Music is no longer a special type of notification according
to the design. If we want to resurrect the functionality, we
can reimplement it with a dedicated API like MPRIS rather
than piggy-bagging on the notification system.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744815
According to the design, hotplug notifications should no longer offer
an eject action and use regular notification buttons (but using icon
and text), the default action when clicking the notification itself
is to launch the file browser.
Also as the corresponding resident notification is gone, it no
longer makes sense to make the notification transient.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744815
The new notification system will no longer give access to actions
from the notifications list, so a notification that is never
displayed as banner does not make sense here.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744815
Tray icons make for a terrible UI on their own, but trying to
shoehorn them into the notification system has only made them
worse. At least for the time being this removal is temporary

When opening a panel menu, we set it's max-height to the available

Ouch, classy - we are telling translators to use a '24h' time
format for the '12h' time format string.
Luckily, only a handful of translations actually followed the
comment (de,hu,id,is,kk,nb,nl), and most of the corresponding
locales do not support 12-hour format anyway (only is_IS, at
least on Fedora).
We assume that applications that export a 'new-window' action can open
a new window, so we add an appropriate entry to the context menu.
However this duplicates functionality if the application already
exposes the action via the desktop file - don't add our own entry
in that case.

Normally when a user uses the login screen to log in, the
login screen gets killed and the user session takes over
the display.
This doesn't happen for wayland sessions, though. Instead,

so kill it off rather than moving it to the correct place ...
When using dynamic workspaces, a new workspace will be appended
when moving a window down to the last (empty) workspace. It makes
sense to extend the behavior in the opposite direction, and prepend
a new workspace when moving a window up from the first workspace.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=665764
New workspaces are inserted by shifting all windows on workspaces
below the insertion position down. As a result, when the new
workspace is inserted before the active one, we end up with
the illusion of a workspace switch. Instead, activate the workspace
on which the windows from the active one ended up.

spurious set-content-type emissions when switching input focus that
temporarily lose purpose and hints defeating its intended semantics
and confusing users. We thus don't use it in that case.

We check for (metasNeeded.length == 0) at the beginning of the function,
which is only ever called when when a non-zero number of results is
received back from the provider. Effectively, this means that
(metas.length != metasNeeded.length) will also catch (metas.length == 0)
and print a nicer message to the log.
The updateSearch() function is called in SearchResults every time new
search hits are available from a search provider; SearchResults will
wait for updateSearch() to complete in a callaback, to update the
overall progress of the search operation.
updateSearch() will call _ensureResultActors(), which will in turn call
getResultMetas() on the search provider, which is an operation that can
fail arbitrarily or return inconsistent data, as it's entirely in the
hands of the search provider.
In case _ensureResultActors() returns a failure, updateSearch() is
currently failing to notify the passed-in callback, which might leave
SearchResults in an inconsistent state: make sure the asynchronous flow
always ends up with a notification to the updateSearch() callback.
So that we'll recreate it the next time we want to show it. Otherwise,
we'll try to call things on a half-destroyed ResizePopup and end up
causing errors instead of showing the user their resize popup.
This will allow g-s-d to handle actions differently based on the
current mode - namely, allow the power button when locked, but
make sure to never show any dialogs in that case.

When animating workspace switches, windows on the old and new workspaces
are temporarily reparented. If windows are restacked, those windows will
thus be ignored by mutter until meta_switch_workspace_completed() resyncs
the stacking at the end of the animation.
As a result, activating a window on another workspace that is not on top
of the stack is very noticeably a two-step operation of switching workspace
and raising the window. There is a technical reason for that order[0], but
we can avoid the visible disruption by manually syncing the stack during
the switch operation.

Frequently banner messages are longer than can reasonable
fit in a one column view, which leads to a smooshed layout.
This commit changes the layout to a two column view, with the

If there isn't enough space for two columns then we keep the
one column layout but add scrollbars.

The login screen is pretty custom full screen container and the standard

While the default Shell style is fairly decent with regard to
accessibility requirements, having the ability to tweak certain
aspects where the regular style works less well is still useful.
For this purpose, try to load a -high-contrast theme variant of
the default stylesheet when a high-contrast theme is requested
(as determined by the GTK+ theme name).

_hideDone checks _shown to determine if anything has shown the overview
while we hid it, and if so, shows the overview forward just in case.
In a local patch that called _hideDone immediately inside _hide for
testing, this broke. While we don't actually depend on this anywhere,
it doesn't hurt so that the next person to hack this up (perhaps me!)
doesn't get stuck debugging it for 20 minutes.
Since moving to a GFile based API in commit 642bf2b778,
setThemeStylesheet() no longer accepts %null to revert to
the default theme. We should have some way to revert to the
default and the least intrusive option is to return to the
old behavior, so do that.
Correctly computing the ISO week number is tricky and we already
have code in the platform to do it, so just refer its computation
to GDateTime rather than doing it ourselves.

Using a separate property to show when the application is busy rather

If the user list is disabled and the user clicks cancel quickly enough
after typing their username, they can get in a state where the
auth prompt gets stuck in the insensitive state.
This is because the login dialog code makes the prompt insensitive
while while pam is processing the provided username, but the prompt
only makes itself sensitive again when it is hidden.
This commit makes it sensitive right before asking for a username again.

Due to a typo we were always removing the first (index 0) connection
from the global list of connections instead of the correct one.
This resulted in some connections remaining in the shell's connection
list long after they were removed. In particular, this resulted in

rescanned).

Fix this by calling hide() in addition to setting the opacity to 0 at

There is currently no simple way to inject into AppIcon's state change,
so an extension that wants to do this has to destroy/remove/update all
icons in the Shell (i.e. in the Dash, AllView, FrequentView) on enable()
and disable() after updating AppIcon.prototype._onStateChange, or the
extension must require a restart of the Shell.
To solve this issue, we rename _onStateChanged to _updateRunningStyle,

calls _updateRunningStyle.
This extra function call should allow extensions to just extend the
updateRunningStyle function in the prototype.

With commit dc6a60dde, the calendar displays the ending day and time of

With the two appointments
Thursday 0800-1000 Foo, and Wednesday 0900-Friday 1200 Bar and today

Currently, multi-day events are shown as individual appointments on each
day. This patch ellipsizes multi-day events to indicate continuation on
the prior or following day (or other time-period.)
The time label spot is now replaced by a box layout that contains the
prefix ellipsis label, the time label and the postfix ellipsis label.
In order to keep the alignment, ellipses are merely invisible (zero
opacity) when hidden.
The ellipses are styled using the events-day-time-ellipses class which,
by default, take the color of the event text.
When RTL is used, the box contents are adjusted accordingly (clutter
does that for us).
An event spanning three days now displays "...All Day..." in the
calendar on the second day.

It is really annoying for the user to acknowledge multiple notifications
when they queue up. So, to prevent a notification flood that has to be
handled by the user one-by-one, a summarized-notification feature is
added which leaves a single summarized-notification for the user,
replacing multiple notifications if the number exceeds 1, which they may
or may not acknowledge. When this summarized-notification is acknowledged,
the message-tray is opened where they can view the notifications that were
summarized. This helps the user concentrate on his primary task
simultaneously informing them about the new notifications.

We commonly mark strftime format strings for translation to account
for date/time representations without an existing strftime shortcut
("Yesterday %H%p"). As those translations are looked up according to
the locale defined by LC_MESSAGES, while the conversion characters
themselves are resolved according to LC_TIME, the result can be
rather odd when mixing locales ("Den 27. January"). The correct
solution would be to install translations for format strings in
the LC_TIME catalogue and look them up with dcgettext(), but we
don't have the infrastructure to do that easily. Work around this
by adding a helper method that looks up a string in LC_MESSAGES
using the locale defined by LC_TIME and use that to translate
format strings, which has the same result.

Most of the code handles the sources setting being empty and
InputSourceManager.currentSource being null because previously the
"model" (i.e. the sources list) was kept in gnome-settings-daemon.
But this is fragile and since we're now the canonical place where the

empty or contains only invalid entries. Adding the default keyboard

When the keyboard is destroyed, we destroy the keyboard actor, but the

The spring animation has to use clones to escape any clip set on the

This lets us considerably clean up the event flow here and change how
things are structured. It also makes sure that we never show "No
Results" -- search.js not being aware of the timeout means that it might
not think that any work was being done when we show the page.
Keep a flag depending on whether a provider is in-flight, and use that
to determine what status label to show.
This ensures that we only show "No Results" when we're done searching
and we're sure that all providers have returned results back to us.
The complexities of tracking these two things separately, with the
display on one half, and the searching on the other half, is difficult
to manage. Squash it all together.
It is quite weird to have those calls/signals using WindowClone as an

And use it to lookup the local WindowClone that applies. Otherwise,
WorkspaceThumbnail.WindowClone objects may be mistakenly set, which
are not usable interchangeably with Workspace.WindowClone ones. This
may lead to several misbehaviors as fields available in the second

values get used in math ops, which result in NaNs over the place.
Likewise, the similar functions in WorkspacesViewBase subclasses take
now MetaWindow arguments too.

Commit 9e5704b introduced a regression due to a sloppy mistake not
making actors reactive on animation out.
Fix that making actors reactive when animating out as well.
Our current UI is horrible in dealing with outdated extensions - we
don't give users any indication at all that something is not working as
expected (unless hiding the prefs button as we did until the last commit
counts).
To fix this, make the enable switch insensitive to indicate OutOfDate
extensions.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=736185
It is confusing to treat outdated extensions as if they didn't exist
in some places, but like any other extensions elsewhere. In particular
gnome-tweak-tool still allows to launch prefs for them while making
it clear to users that the extension will not work - opening the
list of installed extensions in that case is unexpected and confusing.
Just remove the version check for now, we will soon follow tweak-tool
and use it to disable the extension switch instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=736185

Currently we consider the last item animating being the last actor of
the list, but that's wrong since the last item animating depends on the
distance between the source actor and the original position of the
animated actor.
Take that into account to check the last item of the animation.
The code that cleaned up when a background actor was destroyed tried to access
the Background as backgroundActor.background._delegate but when the destroy
signal is emitted, the MetaBackgroundActor was already disposed and
backgroundActor.background NULL.
The rewrite of Mutter's background code (see bug 735637) requires
corresponding changes here - we no longer need to layer multiple
MetaBackgroundActors together.
The general strategy is that a BackgroundSource object is created
per GSettings schema, and keeps either one Background/MetaBackground pair,
or, for animation, a Background/Metabackground pair for each monitor.

Commit 12845f0eef reset translationX to 0 to fix the slide-in
animation of the dash when dragging a search result, but 0 is the
wrong value for the thumbnail slider - the next time it will be
shown, it will just pop up instead of sliding in due to translationX
already being at its target value.
Fix this by making _updateTranslation take the actual visibility into
account and call that to set the correct translation in dragBegin.
Controls are slided in by animating translationX from the actor's
width to 0; however as _updateTranslation() will skip the animation
when the property is already at its target value and 0 happens to be
the initial value of translationX, the initial animation is skipped.
Fix this by initializing translationX to undefined, which will always
differ from a valid target value.
The comment is right, updating the translation should be deferred
to pageEmpty, or else overview controls will just pop up instead
of sliding in. So revert that part of commit 6a7fa52879.
Providers that need drag-and-drop behavior can implement this via the
createResultObject() hook (as the app search provider already does), no
need to duplicate that code in the generic result objects
(ListSearchResult already does not implement DND).

To avoid both problems, use the default calendar application again,
but only if it is in the list of recommended applications.

We need to put the actual actors in the history, not just the labels,
otherwise all emptyLine (which are not messages but are not empty

We assumed that either a portal would give us a target URI, or we
would eventually reach the URI of our choice (which is http://www.gnome.org)
This is not always the case: even after a successful login we may
stay in a confirmation page, so make sure that every time we see a
redirect we trigger a connectivity check (or queue one for when
the user closes the window)

Performance testing was producing inconsistent values at different
times in the day since the GNOME default background is animated and
sometimes has a single layer, and sometimes two blended layers.
So we have consistent numbers, install a simple animated background
with GNOME Shell that has 40-year long transition ending in 2030,a
and set an environment variable in gnome-shell-perf-tool so that the
background is override with that background. (The background depends
on files installed by gnome-backgrounds; we assume that the person
running performance tests is doing so within the scope of a full
GNOME install.)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=734610
All derived classes are already checking explicitly for action names
(FOO and FOO_BACKWARDS). mutter used to have a META_KEY_BINDING_REVERSES
flag for keybindings which required special handling of "shift"+FOO as
FOO_BACKWARDS, but this has been removed now, so this special handling
is no longer necessary.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732296
When this flag is set on a MetaKeyBinding, mutter will know that
the keybinding has an associated reverse keybinding triggered with
the shift modifier. However, an undesirable side-effect is that
gnome-control-center keyboard panel does not know that this 'shift'
is reserved for these reverse keybindings and cannot detect
conflicting bindings in this case.
This 'reverse' logic can now be handled at a higher level (in gcc keyboard
panel) so this commit removes it from gnome-shell so that they do not
conflict.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732296
Now that mutter gives a way to check if a MetaKeyBinding was marked as
'reversed' or not, gnome-shell does not have to hardcode that a
MetaKeyBinding using a shift modifier is reversed, it can directly check
if the appropriate flag is set.

We were setting the value of adjustment on size changes, but we weren't
changing the page value, so adjustment and page value was not in sync.
To fix it, make sure adjustment of the view is in sync with the page
value.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=734680
Since these settings are now going to be accessed by
gnome-control-center as well, its more appropriate for them to live in
gsettings-desktop-schemas.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=734483
Having the on/off setting be backed by a boolean in dconf makes sense
anyway but this is mainly to be able to remember the max accuracy set
before user disabled geolocation so that when they enable it next time,
we have the max accuracy level on same value as before.
There hasn't been a real need for this but now we are about to add
geolocation settings in control center and it'll be easiser for
control-center to simply toggle a boolean property rather than to have
to know about and deal with accuracy levels.
Later we might also want to add accuracy level settings to privacy panel
so keeping the accuracy level setting around still. However we no longer
support 'off' accuracy level as the new boolean property covers that.
This also implies that we no longer track available accuracy level,
which made the code a bit hard to follow/maintain.

The zooming animation of the windows looks nice when animating
from the workspace display page, but looks weird from other pages
like apps page or search page since the windows come from nowhere
with an initial position not known to the user.
Instead of that just fade the desktop with the windows in its
original position.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732901
Currently we are overriding the explicit calls to slideIn
given that it's called also with the signal of showing overview.
It was necessary because of the bug that previous patch fixed,
so now we can just delete that.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732901
The slide of thumbnailWorkspace is shown when entering overview,
connecting to the same signal that creates the thumbnails, the showing
signal of overview, but, to make the slide animation we need to know how
much width the slider has. To do that we ask the thumbnailsWorkspace
about its width, but given that it connects to the same signal it could
ask the width without having created the thumbnails yet, so reporting a
width of 0 and confusing the slide animation.
Currently it works because gjs calls the callbacks following the order
of the clients connecting that signal, and the thumbnailsWorskpace is
connected before the slide ones.
To avoid that we allow to request the preferred size of the
thumbnailsBox at any time with any number of thumbnails. The only thing
required is to make sure the porthole is accessible when requesting the
preferred size.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732901
We were calling twice showPage() with the correct page, here and in
show() / zoomFromOverview given that _resetShowAppsbutton was called
from the signal 'showing' of overview. Given that the call to
_resetShowAppsbutton is only actually used when hiding the overview we
can actually put the checked state of the button to false when animating
from overview so it shows the workspace page, causing the same behavior
of _resetShowAppsbutton without all the shenanigans of resetting when
the hiding overview signal is triggered.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732901
Currently the indicators are a BoxLayout inside a BinLayout in AllView.
BinLayout doesn't have any size constraint, so if the indicators request
a bigger size than AllView the entire overview is grown, causing the
overview to go crazy.
To avoid that, create an actor for the page indicators that request as
minimum size 0, and as a natural size, the sum of all indicators natural
sizes. Then we clip_to_allocation, so it doesn't grow more than the
parent.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=723496
If the application reports itself as single window (through
an explicit indication in the desktop file or some heuristics),
not show a "New window" item that doesn't actually open a new window.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=722554
Both Panel.ActivitiesButton and its parent class Panel.MenuButton would
attempt to connect their own _onEvent() function to Clutter::event,
which counterintuitively was connecting the child class' _onEvent()
function twice.
So, actually chain up on the signal handler, and don't connect twice
to the signal. Both methods were calling this.menu.close(), so only
do that on the parent class handler, since we're chaining up and doing
the right thing now.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=733840
We don't need to wait to until the stage window is mapped to take
the modal grab, because that code now runs in a startup-prepared
signal handler, which in turn runs some time after the mainloop
has started and well after the stage window is mapped.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=711682
The grab would previously just consume the button release, while propagating
motion events, possibly down to clients in wayland. This would produce
inconsistent streams there.
On pointer events, the inconsistency would just be having clients receiving
events with the button 1 set in the mask, with no implicit grab. When touch
events are handled, this would be more hindering as the client would receive
touch_motion events with no prior touch_down nor later touch_up, something
never supposed to happen.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=733633
The animation is the same for modal dialogs, but it is now
run for non modal dialogs too (matching the new behavior on
show).
In addition, we run a destroy animation for normal windows,
if they use CSD (there are technical limitations that prevent
running animations after destroy on server decorated windows)

No sequence checks are done, these UI elements promptly trigger a grab that
will cancel ongoing touches and redirect later ones somewhere else, so that
works as a barrier to multi-toggling.

Currently to know how many results we could show for GridResults
we use the width of the bin containing those results. Since it's
expanding it shouldn't be a problem. But it becomes a problem when
no results are displayed, thus the container becomes hidden and
it losts its allocation.
In the next introduction of terms in search we call again
maxDisplayedResults but it doesn't have allocation yet, and therefore no
results are displayed (currently a bug on IconGrid makes the min size =
one icon, so actually we show one and only one icon in this case).
To solve that use the parent container which contains the search results
of all providers or the text label with not displayed results, so it
always have the real available width to calculate maxDisplayedResults.
Thanks Alban Browaeys for the debugging footwork.

Unlike for the main app view, where we only move the key focus once the
users starts navigating, the key focus is moved immediately when opening
a folder popup. This is unexpected, so make app folders consistent with
the main view.
As arrow keys will not work while the container itself has key focus, we
handle those explicitly by translating them to TAB_FORWARD and
TAB_BACKWARD respectively.

Support was added to Mutter to allow it to trigger a restart
to allow for restarts when switching in or out of stereo mode.
Hook up to the new signals on MetaDisplay to show the restart

the startup animation.
This also allows us to do 'Alt-F2 r' restarts more cleanly
without a visual flash and animation.

Instead of always logging frame timestamps for every frame - which
was using >26 bytes of memory per frame, or 5MB per hour of continuous
redrawing - make frame timestamps something that defaults off and is
turned turned on using a new ShellGlobal::frame-timestamps property by
the perf scripts.

Add an option for windows created with Scripting.createTestWindow()

We currently replay events that should start a search to the search
entry, which is fairly dodgy. Synthesize a new event with the correct
source actor instead, which is a bit less evil.
If an active grab on pointer events happens during multi-touch operations,
all non-pointer-emulating touches will be muted. This may leave the
Clutter.ClickAction incomplete if triggered by one of those sequences,
just to have a gesture take over and trigger a compositor grab, which would
leave the capture-event handler stuck eating events.
So listen for grab-op-begin from the display, and ensure the action is
released if such grab begins.
and the capture event handler stuck.
When returning to the desktop from overview we always show the
workspaceDisplay, given that is which have the windows clones to allow
animations.
The problem becomes when previous that we were at some other
page, like Search or AppDisplay. The problem is that when showing the
workspaceDisplay the windows are repositioned. That's wanted except
when returning from overview, since that causes unwanted animations
of the windows.
To avoid that just not reposition the windows if leaving the overview.
We don't normally hit the code in scripting.js to print metrics

Listen to changes in connectivity, and ask our helper to authenticate
when needed.
We don't have a URL to connect to yet (we will have when
the new NM API lands), so we use the default of trying
www.gnome.org (which is also more reliable because we can

They are different properties, they deserve different syncs.
Especially because a full allocation cycle sets both anyway, so
we should save some cycles this way.

We already have the width and height information cached in JS,
let's avoid going through gjs-gobject-clutter to retrieve them

be able to generate better code.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=729823
We must remove the old image from the cache, not the new one.
This was causing a leak of old (and expensive) background
images, and was causing errors at the end of animations, trying
to destroy the animated background.
We translate 'On' to available accuracy level but if available accuracy
level later changes, we don't update available accuracy level accordingly
and hence limit the accuracy of apps.
E.g if available accuracy level is 'city' and geolocation is enabled,
the max accuracy level would be 'city' and apps can't get higher than
that. Now if user plugs in GPS, the available accuracy level will change
to 'exact' but without this patch max accuracy level will remain to be
'city' and apps will not be able to use the GPS.

Commit 5d00c1a5ee moved app folder popups to GrabHelper - for some
reason, the line that ensures the current behavior of only considering
events inside the app picker to dismiss popups got lost ...
As clicks outside the app picker should still be handled normally
while clicks inside should dismiss the popup, we cannot make full
use of GrabHelper. However using it at least for focus handling
fixes some minor details we are getting wrong, for instance not
restoring the previous focus after dismissing a folder popup.
Commit 6c2f3d1d17 moved pref overrides into JS to implement
session mode specific overrides in a clean and generic way.
However that approach comes with a cost - doing the overrides only
after having handled over control to JS means that the core will
be initialized with the non-overridden settings before changing
to the correct values. In the best case this is unnecessary work,
but it can in fact have a worse effect: when initializing workspaces,
we will restore the previous number of workspaces when using
dynamic-workspaces and reset to the configured number otherwise.
As the non-overridden default for dynamic-workspaces is FALSE, we
can easily end up moving the user's windows to the "wrong" workspace.
Now GSettings is expected to grow support for session specific defaults,
which will render our entire override system obsolete (yay!). Given
that, it seems acceptable to use a less generic (and uglier) approach
in the meanwhile, in order to fix aforementioned problems. So move
overrides back before core initialization and just hardcode the
session-mode => override-schema relation.

The 0x0 dummyCursor works well when the menu pops up directly underneath
the pointer (e.g. when triggered by right-clicking the titlebar) or by
keyboard, but not when triggered by the menu button - the menu does not
point to the center of the button's bottom edge, and unless the user
keeps holding the mouse button while moving into the menu, the menu will
be dismissed immediately on button release.
Address these issues by using the button geometry to overlay the window
button with an appropriately sized actor that acts as a proper sourceActor,
to make the window menu behavior consistent with other shell menus.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=731058
Having the full geometry of the menu's source button (if any) will
allow us to address several misbehaviors of window menus, so use
that instead of show_menu().
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=731058
When the pointer leaves the notification area, we queue a timeout to
hide the notification after a little while. If the user is hovering over
a notification and clicks the X button to close the notification, we will
destroy the notification, which causes a "pointer left" event on the
notification area. This queues a timeout which erroneously fires after
the next notification in the queue shows up.
The code and state machine are too complex to properly make sure this
timeout doesn't fire when there is no notification up next, so instead
just clear it when showing a notification to make sure that any
previously queued timeout doesn't apply to us.

Starting keynav into the active page is handled from a key-press
handler on the stage, however we should not "start" keynav when
we are already navigating elsewhere - the latter can happen when
keynav fails (for instance because the focus is trapped inside an
open app folder or at the end of the dash), and the event bubbles
up to the stage. So make sure to only handle the event to actually
start keynav, to not interfere with the normal navigation handling.

When a monitor is removed, the OsdWindow for that monitor may process
the monitors-changed signal before OsdWindowManager does (which will
remove the OSD). If that happens, we will currently try to access
an invalid monitor; check for this to avoid a couple of warning.
When switching between alternatives in AltSwitcher, the currently
visible child is replaced with the alternative. If the original
child has the key focus when it is removed from the stage, the
focus is lost. Detect this case and manually move the focus to

When dragging a window preview from a non-primary monitor onto a
workspace thumbnail, the window is moved to the primery monitor
first before changing its workspace. However when dragging the window
between thumbnails to create a new workspace, it is kept on its current

with the default 'workspaces-only-on-primary' setting, as the newly
created workspace is immediately removed again.

Currently, our logic for page panning isn't great. If the user starts a
pan upwards and hesitates over a new page, we'll go to the *next* page
on release, since the difference is greater, but the velocity wound down
to 0.
Instead of trying to treat it like page down or scrolls, simply do the
math to find the page where the user scrolled to.
This is unfortunately broken for fast swipes, since the user doesn't get
far enough into the new page to make a difference. I'm getting the
impression we'll need a gesture recognizer for this, though, however
crude. Simple hacks I tried, like a velocity multiplier, didn't work
properly.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=729064
We often call goToPage like:
this.goToPage(this._currentPage - 1);
(or + 1). During panning, these are based on the velocity values
of the gesture action. If we're already on the first or last page
and the panning ends, it's possible to get goToPage that's either
-1 or greater than the last page.
During normal usage, this isn't a problem, since the Y values will
be correct, always. But when panning, the Y values stick to the
finger, and thus if we return early, we won't snap to the exact page,
making it seem like things get "stuck".
Fix this the simple way by clamping to the correctly-ranged values
of pageNumber

When workspaces have been removed, we need to remove the corresponding
thumbnails as well; the number of thumbnails that need removing is
the difference between the old number of workspaces and the new one.
Currently we assume that the old number of workspaces corresponds to
the number of existing thumbnails, but that may actually be wrong:
A thumbnail will still be animated out after its workspace has been
removed. As a result, we end up removing too many thumbnails when a
workspace is removed while a thumbnail of a previously removed workspace
is still animating out. Fix this by basing the old number of workspaces
only on thumbnails that have not been removed previously.

Telepathy 1.0 will not be compatible, and will probably require
source changes. telepathy-glib 0.12 and telepathy-logger 0.2 are
the 0.x ABIs (they were the first stable-branches to have g-i).

When a user logs in to a wayland session, we keep the login screen
running on the X server with the login screen running in a deactivated mode.
This commit makes sure it get reactivated when the user comes back to
the VT (from user switching, logout or just ctrl-alt-f1).

In addition to BluetoothAirplaneMode, we need to check also
BluetoothHasAirplaneMode, which is indicative of bluetooth rfkill
devices (and by extension bluetooth adapters).
This prevents showing the menu if there is no adapter present.

Most system menu entries are disabled on the lock/login screen;
there is no good reason why users should be allowed to turn bluetooth
on/off (but not e.g. Wifi), so disable the entry as well.

When reacting to background settings changes, we may end up queuing
more than one load. The redundant backgrounds are expected to be
destroyed when the previous background has faded out; however since
commit 933f38390b, the tweened actor is the same for all
consecutive load operations and we end up with a single onComplete
handler, ergo a single destroyed actor.
As new backgrounds are always added to the bottom, we are not only
piling up additional background actors, but break changing backgrounds
more than once, as the correct background ends up being covered by
previously added redundant actors.
Fix this by destroying redundant actors right after loading rather
than waiting for the fade animation to complete.

Folders use a 2x2 grid of the first 4 app icons as icon - if a folder
contains less apps, we currently skip the corresponding grid positions.
As a result, the overall size request may be smaller than the one for
other icons, making the folder icon look out of place.
Fix this by always using a full grid as folder icon, using dummy actors
as necessary.

At some point ScreenShield had code to do this, I don't know when
it was lost, but it makes sense and avoids having to move the mouse
just to see the shield.

With the switch to a table layout in commit f959cafb36, setting
alignments to place the individual icons at the outer edge of the grid
stopped working. Remove that code and add some explicit spacing instead.

If the notification is updated while SHOWING, we'll overwrite the
tween updating it to the new 'y' position, but forget to update the
state to SHOWN at the end of our transition. Make sure to always set
the state to SHOWN at the end.

This code may have worked when written in 2009, but later gjs commit
b5e467d89aea43a8e32a1138d232c8a32e6b0785 removed the priority
parameter from idle_add.
Now, when running a constantly-updating client (es2gears) on an
embedded platform, _updateRegions() does not get called and I see
unresponsive window decorations.
Update the code to use meta_later_add() like other parts of the
shell, which is actually slightly better in this case anyway.
Solves the unresponsiveness problem.

The smartcard service is put in the foreground in two cases:
1) If password service is disabled by admin configuratoin
2) if a smartcard is inserted
In either case we don't want to ask the user to pick a user from the
userlist. We currently only avoid asking in case 2.
This commit fixes case 1.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=726263
We only want to react to the card the user logged in with, at
the unlock screen. We check "at the unlock screen" by checking
the "reauthenticating" state variable. That variable is the
wrong one, though. It gets set too late, and in some cases, gets
set at the login screen, too. We should be checking this._reauthOnly
instead.
This commit fixes that.

If a user inserts the smartcard they logged in with into the system,
it's supposed to lift the shield and prompt for pin. That doesn't
happen because the parameter list of the smartcard-inserted signal
handler is wrong.
This commit fixes that.

Doing so is inconsistent with the behavior in the summary, and
is quite annoying when dealing with chats (because there is no way
to unfocus a chat notification with the keyboard only)
