If the source actor is destroyed while the popupMenu is shown -- this
can happen if a non favorite application was closing or crashes -- the
menu actor is improperly destroyed.
This makes the popupMenu close first and does a clean ungrab instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=757556
The various switcher keybindings are handled identically, except for
the popup that is shown; update the code to reflect that instead of
duplicating the code again and again.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=730739
The code to handle cycling through windows without showing a popup
was removed from mutter a while ago, which left the corresponding
keybindings mostly broken (i.e. they now only switch between two
windows). With the various switch-foo keybindings handled by the
shell, it is now easier to take over the cycle-foo keybindings as
well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=730739
Logind recently got support for a hint property in Session Object to
inform if session is Locked or not. It is up to desktop environments
to keep this property up to date.

we're sticked with dnd grabing the events after we
dropped the target.

We currently show the orientation lock button when an accelerometer

While a channel has pending messages, it will pop up again when
dismissed. That is clearly not what users expect, so clear them
out first before closing a channel.

Let's make it really simple and ask user interactively, once. This
simplifies things for:
* Privacy panel of gnome-control-center as it doesn't have to filter
applications.
* Apps: If they are denied access, they can simply point users to
privacy panel of gnome-control-center since they can be sure location
access for the app can be enabled in there.
Also it's less annoying to user. Before this patch, if they denied
access to application, they had to keep doing that at least each time
they launched the application.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762559
Alex told me that since it's not geoclue but rather GNOME-components
storing/accessing app permissions, it's better if we put it under
'gnome' rather than generic 'desktop' table.
Now that we no longer skip dimming/undimming windows while showing
the overview, we can still save a bit of work by changing the dimming
without animation while the window is hidden.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762475
We skip window animations while the overview is shown (and the window
group is hidden) to avoid unnecessary work. However when an attached
modal dialog is opened or closed, this involves checking whether the
parent window should be dimmed - skipping that test means that we can
simply fail to dim or undim a window altogether, so do that check
unconditionally.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762475
While we could have implemented this already a while ago, this would
have been a completely false security mechanism since we had no way of
reliably identifying applications. Since now with xdg-app, we can at least
reliably identify bundled applications, let's give users a choice of
which applications in particular they are OK with giving location data
to.
While we still can't reliably identify system (non-xdg-app) applications,
it seems extremely unlikely we'll ever be able to do that (at least not
in the near future) so we'll have to trust them to not lie about their
IDs.
Next release of geoclue will take the ID of bundled application directly
from corresponding xdg-app metadata so bundled applications can't simply
lie about their IDs.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=762119
This class will be responsible for authorizing applications that try to
access location information. Since this is mainly targetted for xdg-app
applications, we make use of xdg-app's D-Bus API to store
per-application authorization.

Add a dialog that is used in a following patch, to ask user if they want
a requesting application to gain access to their location.

Only recent IBus versions have support for this signal
which is used for wayland clients. In order to work
with older IBus versions we can silently ignore the
signal's absence.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=753476
We lost media controls outside of notification banners when
implementing the new notification designs. Reimplement this
functionality as a dedicated "Media" section in the message
list based on MPRIS.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756491
Currently both the base classes for messages/sections and the message
list itself that instantiates the available sections are located in
the same module. As a result, it isn't possible to define sections
in a different module without introducing circular dependencies. The
Calendar module is already unwieldily large, so split it up a bit to
avoid it growing even bigger in the future.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756491
It is not always possible to determine the type of audio device that
got plugged in. Add a system modal dialog to query the user in that
case and export in on the bus to gnome-settings-daemon.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=760284
IBus now provides a new method for cursor positioning where the
coordinates are relative to the focused window. This is useful for
wayland clients which don't have access to their global coordinates.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=753476
We are already emitting a 'drag-end' signal when no more dragging
is happening, so it makes sense to emit a 'drag-begin' too when
starting, so that apps interested in implementing different logic
between those two events can easily do it without needing to deal
with the underlying 'button-press-event' signal for the actor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=761208
Before reenabling all extensions, we update the list of enabled extensions
to catch any changes that happened while extensions were enabled. However
this is currently broken as onEnabledExtensionsChanged() is a nop while
disabled, so just call getEnabledExtensions() directly.
draggable.startDrag() is called directly here (i.e. manualMode is not set),
we must keep track of the touch event and pass it to startDrag() then.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756748
We need to keep track of the pointer emulating touch sequence. In order
to have events properly redirected on touch devices, the
Clutter.grab_pointer and ungrab_pointer() have been replaced by the grab()
and grab_sequence() ClutterInputDevice methods, one or the other is used
depending on the device triggering DnD.
An extra "sequence" argument has been added to startDrag, passing null here
will resort to pointer grabs.
This is enough to make thumbnails in the WorkspaceBox draggable through
touch.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756748
It overrides ::button-release-event in order to implement the
hidden/shown toggling, it must do the same on TOUCH_END, otherwise
menus stay shown on touch.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756748
This works for pointers and touch on X11, there is however no pointer
emulation on evdev, so touch triggers ::clicked with button==0 which
is ignored.

Animated backgrounds are based on a start time in local time - in case
of a timezone change, that time is no longer accurate. To fix, we need
to either make BGSlideShow aware of timezone changes (and notify us to
update the animation), or just reload the animation - timezone changes
should be a rare event, so go with the simpler second option.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=758939
Any time estimates we can come up with are notoriously unreliable;
even on devices that report correct (dis)charging rates, any change
in workload, screen brightness etc. can throw our estimate off by
a huge amount. This is further compounded by bad firmware and battery
firmware which reports inaccurate data as neither Windows nor Android do
not use that data.
So instead, limit ourselves to only showing the current percentage
and leave its interpretation to the user.
As an added bonus, we end up with shorter strings that are less likely
to cause problems with ellipsization when translated.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708472
Builtin chat and network notifications already follow the notification
policy of appropriate applications, it makes sense to do the same for
autorun notifications to give users control over hotplug notifications
in Settings.
If we detected that Bluetooth devices were setup, show the Bluetooth
menu so that users can easily turn Bluetooth back on.
This is a bit of a hack, as we cannot detect whether there is a
Bluetooth adapter at all when it's disabled, so we cannot tell whether
there were any Bluetooth devices setup, at some point. This state is
saved in the gnome-shell GSettings in the had-bluetooth-devices-setup
key.
Checking whether we saw Bluetooth devices at one point is a good
enough guess of whether there will be some in the future.

It's very unexpected that a spinner animation would
preempt idles from running.
This commit runs the spinner animation with a low
priority to ensure it doesn't take over the main
loop.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754814
Right now the spinner animation updates every 14ms.
60 frames per second would be one frame per 16.667ms,
so we're waking up more frequently than we need to.
This commit changes the wakeup to happen after 16ms.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754814
If the source actor is sized 0x0, the grabHelper will close the menu
on button release if the menu ends up flipped because in that case the
release event happens when the pointer is neither over the source
actor (since it's 0x0) or over the menu actor. A zero sized source
actor works for the non-flipped menu case because the menu's actor
itself ends up underneath the pointer.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756605
If we get another effect on the same actor, we should make sure to
remove the clone through the "overwrite" methods provided by Tweener, or
there will be a race that might end up with a stray clone being left
around.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756714
The translation should describe the difference between the fullscreened
and unfullscreened position of the window - however we are currently
assuming a fullscreen position of (0, 0) instead of the monitor's origin,
which causes glitches on dualscreen setups.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756697
Some labels in the system status menu - namely network names - are out
of our control, and may thus grow the width "infinitively" unless we
restrict the menu width. So far we have been doing this by setting a
fixed width or max-width, but any value we put there might end up
being too restrictive in some locales. Instead, request a width that
fits all the labels we want to show unellipsized and use that instead
of an arbitrary limit.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708472
We use the newly introduced feature from Mutter to hook up our own
fullscreen and unfullscreen animations.
To give the illusion of a transition as smooth as possible, we create a
snapshot of the current contents of the actor before its state is
changed, and crossfade between the two states while the size changes.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707248
StIcon will skip loading the texture when its theme node is unset (which
may happen on style changes while the widget is hidden). While our size
request to compute the dash icon size will create the icon's theme node
if necessary (and of all its parents), a missing texture can still throw
off our computation.
Make sure this doesn't happen by ensuring the icon's style first, so the
texture is updated in response to StWidget::style-changed if necessary.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745649
When adjusting dash icon sizes, we compute the icon padding by subtracting
the configured icon size from the first icon actor's preferred size. To
make sure that the preferred size correctly corresponds to the current
dash icon size even while the icon is animating, we enforce the size
before the size request. For that we used to temporarily manipulate
the icon texture size directly, but commit e92d204d42 cleaned this
up to use the setIconSize() method instead.
This does not work however, as the icon actor's iconSize property will
always match the dash iconSize property, making the method a noop. So
go back to the original approach of enforcing the texture size to make
sure we always base our computations on correct values.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745649
There is nothing particularly critical about this notification, it
was only marked as such to get certain behavior like auto-expanding
and sticking-around to be acknowledged by the user (as it offers
more actions than the summary notification, so it is frustrating
when it goes away because it was missed).
As all notifications will now stay visible until we are sure the
users has seen them, the latter reasoning no longer applies.
Auto-expansion doesn't appear too important and may even be considered
annoying by users, so remove the CRITICAL hint now.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657923
We are currently erroring out when the tab chain doesn't contain at
least one window for an app which might happen for windows that don't
take focus like xeyes. This leaves us in a state where we can't show
the switcher at all. Let's just ignore these apps instead of looking
broken.
While the GtkSettings::gtk-shell-shows-app-menu property is meant to
reflect a desktop capability (i.e. in the GNOME case: the app menu is
shown in the top bar), it is possible for users to overwrite it.
Respect the setting and actually hide the menu in that case.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745919
Refer to the system menu in the top bar as "System" rather than "Settings" as
it contains more than just settings and "Settings" is already used for the
settings panel. "System" is also used elsewhere, so include context for
translators.
The destroy signal handler is kept connected despite the NotificationMessage
being destroyed, which leaves dangling NotificationMessage objects that will
be mass destroyed when the Notification object these depend upon is finally
destroyed.
Depending on the amount of accumulated NotificationMessages, this may lead
to temporary freezes or other more funky issues when recursion limits are
hit.

Follow the design we have in gtk+ for buttons dialogs,

It may be 2015, but users still stumble upon the occasional .desktop

offending apps.

And make these only handled on wayland. There's a plethora of issues

The menu is clearly associated with a particular window, so keeping
it around when the window is gone doesn't make sense - in case of

the invalidated window and result in a crash. So just dismiss the
menu when the menu is unmanaged.

When chrome is added with the trackFullscreen parameter, the actor's

be incorrect - fix this by updating the initial visibility as necessary.

Since the introduction of per-source notification policy in commit

If we aren't the active session clutter can't animate and thus we
can't expect the shield to be shown before releasing the suspend
inhibitor so we should release it immediately when becoming inactive.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749228
The whole point of holding a suspend inhibitor is to be able to lock
before suspending.
Currently, when resuming we immediately take the inhibitor without
checking that we're locked which means that we won't be able to
release this inhibitor if we don't unlock at least once.
To prevent that and to better match the inhibitor's intention in the
first place, we can tie the inhibitor with not being locked. In
practice, we also want to let the locking animation finish before
suspending, so we'll tie the inhibitor with not being active
instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749228
This could happen if we are VT switched away and an animated
activation is requested because we're preparing to enter sleep. Since
we don't animate in this case we'd never reach
_completeLockScreenShown() before coming out of sleep, at which point
we _inhibitSuspend() again and would leak the previous inhibitor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749228
Commit 08690d658f generalized the banner-blocking behavior of the
dateMenu to all menus that would obscure the banner. However setting
up the 'open-state-changed' handler only when an indicator is added
does not work for indicators that change their entire menu (like the
app menu) - we currently end up with menus with no connected signal
handler, and throw an error when trying to disconnect an invalid
signal ID.
To address this, add a new PanelButton::menu-set signal and use that
to set up the 'open-state-changed' handler.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745910
For barriers like the hot corner which are made up of multiple axis
barriers, make sure that all the barriers have been left before
resetting the barrier.
We currently block banners while the time+date menu is open, as it
would obscure the notification. However it is not necessarily the
only menu for which this is the case, so generalize the behavior
to all menus that would overlap banners when open.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745910
As notifications appear in the time+date dropdown's message list, there's
a strong relationship between notification banners and the menu. However
while the time+date menu is centered by default, which matches the banner
position, its actual position depends on the session mode - in particular
it is moved to the right in classic mode.
Reinforce the relationship in these cases by moving notification banners
underneath the time+date menu.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745910
Unlike entries in the calendar's message list, banners are not subject
to the normal keynav chain, and making the banner actor itself unfocusable
allows for the focus to be moved to the action area when expanded.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=747205
The window menu has all those workspace related options, but with multiple

Now that the tray is shown temporarily when a tray icon appears,
we can decrease its visible width when concealed to interfere less
with window content without hurting discoverability.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746787
There is a balance to hit between discoverability and getting out
of the way, and the legacy tray currently fails in both regards.
To address the first issue, temporarily reveal the tray when a

Resident notifications are not really a thing anymore with the new
design, so all the user sees are some notifications that mysteriously

libcaribou was designed to generate X events which works under wayland
sessions for X clients but obviously doesn't work for wayland clients
and for shell chrome.
This patch adds a simple caribou display adapter which inherits from
its X display adapter and allows us to continue to work for X clients
and at the same time makes the OSK work on shell text entries by
sending key events directly to the focused text actor.
Making the OSK work for wayland clients requires much bigger changes
at various levels in the stack and either not using libcaribou or
re-working it substantially so that's left for future work.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=747274
Sources are destroyed with their last notification. This is usually the
correct behavior, however in case of chat sources, the corresponding
telepathy channel might still be open, and any further messages that
should trigger a notification are lost because chat sources are only
created when telepathy's channel dispatcher notifies us about a channel
(via ObserveChannels).
Loosing messages like this is unexpected, so keep chat sources around
even without notifications while the channel is open.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=747636
Currently the lifetime of a chat source and its single notification
are tied together. While this apparently makes sense, it means we
will lose all follow-up notifications when a source is destroyed
with the corresponding telepathy channel left open. We will fix this
soon by tying the source to the channel's lifetime rather than the
notification, prepare for this by recreating the notification if
necessary.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=747636
Instead of saving only the current input source when entering password

This is closer to user expectations since password mode is a transient
and short lived state.

We don't need a different GSettings object for each app or
favorite item.
While it practice it does not change much (AddMatch is still
obviously sent out), it minimally reduces the overhead on
changes, and makes for cleaner code.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746509
In recent glib, change notifications don't actually happen unless all
keys have been read, in an effort to reduce unnecessary dbus
traffic for shortlived GSettings object and avoid AddMatch calls.
But we care about changes here, so we need to make sure we're
subscribed, and an easy way to do so is to reuse the same object
to watch for changes and to load the active providers at startup.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746509
When introducing support for "default disabled" search providers
this part was overlooked, so enabling a default disabled provider
would be ignored until the next login.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746509
When the chat app is focused, we should hide all banners immediately.
A good way to do so, without tracking which app is focused, is
to look for messages that are acked when the banner is unexpanded,
which implies they were acked by some other telepathy client.

Pause dynamic workspace management while workspaceSwitcherPopup
is shown so as to eliminate infinite creation and destruction of
workspaces, thus preventing stuttering while trying to move a
window to last workspace.
Add _isWorkspacePrepended flag to make sure only a single workspace
is prepended at a time thus preventing the possibility of prepending
infinite workspaces while dynamic workspace management is on pause.
Prepend a new workspace by creating a new workspace instead of only
shifting the windows to next workspace so that the workspaceSwitcherPopup
may appear in sync with what's happening behind the scene and display
correct number of workspaces.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=712778
To switch workspace by keyboard in the overview, the user currently
has to use the normal keybinding. However as the vertical alignment
of workspaces makes them very similar to pages in the app picker, it
makes sense to also support the standard pageUp/pageDown keys.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=742581
"Moving" a window to another workspace doesn't make sense when it cannot

g-s-d has been taking care of this for us but in a very hackish way
that causes dconf writes on every startup and also doesn't handle
dynamic updates to locale1's properties which has become a problem now
that GDM keeps its greeter session running in parallel with users'.
To take care of this properly, this commit introduces a settings
abstraction with both system and session implementations. The session
implementation just wraps access to the existing gsettings while the
system one gets its values from org.freedesktop.locale1's properties.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746288
Since commit 75745fc23f, the bodyStack itself is no longer start-aligned
to not break custom body actors like chat notifications. However we still
want "normal" body actors start-aligned to get the correct RTL behavior.
We now stopped using notification actors directly for anything, so
we can simplify the Notification class significantly by turning it
into a purely informational object others can use to built their UI
representation from.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746343
Since we stopped special-casing chat notifications to use the old
notification actor, we need to provide a notification banner to
maintain the inline chat functionality, so split out the UI from
the existing ChatNotification class.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746343
Special-casing banners of resident notifications was really a
thinly veiled special case for chat notifications, as those were
still using the old notification actor which coupled the life-time
of the notification to its actor. This is no longer the case, so
we can do the sane thing and destroy banners once they are no
longer needed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746343
Passing null as body always meant clearing the existing one. While this
mattered less with the old message tray which used the expanded actor,
the new message list in the calendar uses the unexpanded body. We clearly
don't want that to disappear on icon changes, so pass the existing one.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746343
It makes sense for the gesture to reflect the position of the
activities button / dash. In RTL locales, those are located on
the right rather than the left, so make the gesture apply to
the opposite edge in that case.

Instead of listening to a dbus property exported by g-s-d, listen to the
MetaBackend signal telling the last interacted device, and make sure we
only show the keyboard for touchscreens.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745977
While legacy status icons are notoriously bad with regard to
accessibility (well, among many other things), we should still
make them available via ctrl-alt-tab ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746022
Currently dismissed events will simply reappear when browsing
back and forth between dates, which is clearly broken. Instead,
hide events that have been dismissed permanently. For now, we
simply store a list of ignored IDs ourselves, until we get API
in evolution-data-server to reliably store custom per-event
properties.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744927
If the action was initiated by the user, we want to show the
modal dialog immediately, while if the action was initiated by
NM autoconnection policy we first show a notification and then
show the dialog when needed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=660293
The design calls for differentiating between dismissable reminders
and permanent events, based on whether the selected date is "today"
or some other day.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744927
While messages in the EventsSection are currently simple enough to
use the generic Message baseclass, the design calls for events to
only be dismissable on the current day. We will need a subclass to
implement this behavior cleanly, so add one.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744927
As the design calls for slightly different behavior for the current
day, move the _isToday() function out of MessageListSection to have
it available elsewhere as well ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744927
Currently the clear action in the section header simply removes all
messages from the section. While the result looks exactly as if the
close button of each individual message had been clicked, the messages
are not actually closed - after a restart (or some other condition that
triggers a reload), the messages simply reappear, which is confusing.
Do the expected thing instead, and make clear close all messages in the
section.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746027
Currently a message can only be closed by its close button. However
as we want to make a section's clear action synonymous with clicking
the close button of each individual message in the list, we will need
to expose the close action, so add a corresponding method.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746027
Currently closing all messages is subtly different from clearing
a section, which is confusing. Start making the behavior more
predictable by only showing a close button in the message when
the section's clear button would remove it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746027
This closes a race between setTerms and a slow GetInitialResultSet.
The bug manifests as follows:
- initial search for a short string
- previous results === undefined, call GetInitialResultSet
- user types more, cancel previous search in setTerms()
- mainloop, then _gotResults([])
- previous results === [], !!previous results === true
- therefore call GetSubsearchResultSet with an empty list of results
- _gotResults() from GetSubsearchResultSet is empty
- much later, return from GetInitialResultSet is discarded by
cancellable
- user unhappy because what he searched for is not there
After this fix, the flow is:
- initial search for a short string
- previous results === undefined, call GetInitialResultSet
- user types more, cancel previous search in setTerms()
- mainloop, but no _gotResults
- previous results === undefined, call GetInitialResultSet again with
longer string
- some time later, return from first GetInitialResultSet is discarded
by cancellable
- soon after, return from second GetInitialResultSet comes with good
results
- user happy

If a different message ends up underneath the pointer at the end
of the removal animation, it won't receive an enter event until
the pointer is moved, and thus its hover state will not be correct.
Fix it up manually with an explicit pointer sync.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=746019
As we use two separate body actors for expanded and unexpanded
notifications, updating only one of them on notification updates
is not enough - if the notification has already been expanded,
we need to update the second label as well.
There's a strong expectation that delegating or presenting a channel
will result in a window being activated, so close both overview and
calendar as we do elsewhere.
Enabling line-wrapping of the unexpanded body is not enough to enforce
a single line when the text has embedded newlines, so replace these with
spaces (this is similar to setting ClutterText:single-line-mode, however
that would use a paragraph separator glyph instead).
If activateWindow() is called as the result of activating an item
in the Time & Date drop-down (most likely a notification), it should
behave as other items and close the calendar.
NotificationMessages set the icon either from the corresponding
notification's gicon property, or fall back to the source icon.
Except that we never actually set a notification's gicon property to
the provided icon, so we currently just always fall back, whoops!
If users click outside the search entry while it's empty we reset and
thus give up key focus. This means that when using an input method
with candidate popups, interacting with the popup with a mouse click
cancels the current input method context if there's no other text in
the entry besides the preedit string.
To avoid this we can check if the entry has preedit in addition to
checking if it has normal text.

Ideally we would allow navigating into the button in the screen
reader case, so the configured clocks are read out properly.
However we can still do better than nothing short-term by pointing
to the section header as the button's label_actor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745393
Currently both the timestamp and the position in the notification list
are static once a notification has been added; however notifications may
be updated later, in which case those properties should be reevaluated.

Replace the time formatting in notifications and events with the
new utility method - this makes sure that all times are now following
the clock-format setting and use LC_TIME.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745111
Currently scroll events during the swarm animation will make the
grid appear immediately in addition to the animating clones, and
there'll be a mismatch with the icon at the target position. This
badly breaks the illusion of launchers emerging from the dash and
positioning themselves in a grid - as scrolling icons "mid-air"
before they form a paginated grid doesn't make much sense anyway,
fix this issue by ignoring scroll events for the duration of the
animation.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745574
These notifications are annoying for the most part: presence
changes happen inside an app (empathy or polari), and that app
should have in app notifications for errors, instead of spamming
the global notifications.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745503
The previous code was applying the per row scaling factor of the current
row to the cumulative sum of all previous rows when calculating the y
position of a row. This resulted in the row being shifted up so it would
overlap other windows when the previous rows were not using the same
scaling as the current one.
Also the previous code was not considering that the spacing does not get
scaled when calculating the scaling factor. This is wrong as well and
could result in the overview overlapping the workspace switcher in
situations with lots of windows open.
This fix gives each row the appropriate height according to its scaling
factor and then ensures that the grid remains vertically centered after
losing some of its height.

Clients can be expected to deal with the WM going away temporarily,
but not the display server - so when running as wayland compositor,
a restart is generally a fancy way of killing the user session, and
there's little we can do about it except for preventing the user to
shoot herself in the foot by throwing an error.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=741665
While those elements cannot be activated, they still provide useful
information to screen readers, so include them in the focus chain.
For the same purpose, set a more verbose accessible name, given that
it is not bound by the same space constraints as the visible label.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706903
It doesn't make much sense to show a section if it must remain empty
due to the session mode - there won't be any events if the session
mode disallows events, or notifications if those are disallowed. So
take the session mode into account and update the sections' visibility
accordingly.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745494
We currently show the world clocks section unconditionally, even when
the session mode disallows launching the Clocks app to configure the
displayed clocks. This does not make sense, so hide the entire section
when the session mode disallows settings.

Commit 5a8923ef95 removed support for legacy status icons from
the notification system, as we no longer want them to appear as
notifications. As we are unfortunately not quite at a point where
we can remove all support for them for good, so we now need an
alternative place to put them. Add a small dedicated tray at the
bottom which appears when any legacy status icons are active. By
default it is almost completely hidden to not interfere with the
user's windows, but can be expanded on demand to interact with
the icons.

polari is the GNOME app for IRC, empathy is for everything else
So prefer polari to empathy for IRC channels. We don't need

app) because mission control tries every handler if the preferred
one fails.
Depends on bug 745418 for polari to be mission control activatable.

Make sure the message list section is set to the current date
when opening the menu, otherwise the calendar might skip
the selected-date-changed event (because the day did not change)
which would leave the message list with an uninitialized date.

Turns out this makes interaction with the OSK or candidate popups
using a mouse basically impossible since they get dismissed when the

This reverts commit aeb9f5775f.

As it is impossible to interact with notification banners while a DND
operation is ongoing, we can temporarily hide the banner container from
picks so that DND works as expected even while a banner is showing.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744912
Since commit e189a34, the trayBox uses a Contraint to cover the primary
monitor's work area. This allows banners to be clipped so they don't
leak into monitors above the primary one during animations. However even
without being reactive, the trayBox now interferes with operations like
Looking Glass' object picker and overview DND.
With the trayBox no longer being positioned manually, there's no strong
reason to keep it in LayoutManager, and handling it in MessageTray allows
to hide the actor while no banner is showing, which helps with the issue
outlined above.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744912
The actor is supposed to be hidden while no notification banner
is displayed, and in addition to that when banners are temporarily
blocked (because the calendar is open). However the current code
always shows the actor when banners are not blocked, fix that.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744912
The screen should be woken up when a new notification is shown on
the lock screen, but not when a notification arrives while disabled.
Add a missing condition to fix.

The mode is never set after the removal of the bottom tray, so it
no longer makes sense to pass it to allowKeybinding(). We can also
safely remove it from the ActionModes flags altogether without
requiring a synchronized update with gnome-settings-daemon, as
the latter never used any flag value above LOGIN_SCREEN.
When it comes to keybindings or gestures, there's not really a good
reason why popups associated with the top bar should behave differently
from any other shell menus. Just set the action mode generically for
all menus, so actions like screenshots or media-keys start working
with menus like the background- or app launcher context menus.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745039
We reuse the old body text on useMarkup changes and for expanded
labels. However just taking it from the label actor does not work
when markup is used, as once applied it will be stripped from
ClutterText:text.
So to preserve markup, keep our own copy of the original string
around.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744907
Markup in notification titles is not support (and never has been).
Therefore the text is run through g_markup_escape_text(), and as
a result we do have to use markup internally to correctly show
legal-but-escape characters like '&' or '"'.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744894
The message indicator conveys that the message list contains unseen
messages that will not be shown as banner. So its visibility depends
on two factors: the number of unseen messages, and the number of
messages waiting in the queue to be shown as banner. As we currently
only update the visibility on changes to the former, the indicator is
not always accurate - for instance sources notify count changes before
passing on a notification to the message tray for display.
To fix, add a signal to the message tray to notify when the queue
changes and use it to update the indicator's visibility.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744880
Chat notifications are king of custom, so we'll leave them out for now
and keep using the old banner. However we can port the subscription
notification.
Hotplug notifications use custom notification banners to include
application icons in buttons. Bring those back by providing an
appropriate createBanner() implementation.
While we want to encourage the use of regular notification banners,
some of our built-in stuff does require more or less customized content
("more" being chat notifications, a.k.a. king of custom).
Account for this use case by delegating banner creation to a method,
so either Notification or Source subclasses can overwrite it.
Nothing except for the chat notification is really custom, so stop
specifying the flag for anything else - it will soon become a bit
harder to create non-standard notifications, so don't do it for no
good reason (discouraging this is of course the reason for making it
harder in the first place) ...
Instead of using the notification's own actor as a banner (and
keeping it around after the banner was displayed to not dismiss
the notification itself), create a separate banner actor from
the information the notification provides, just like we do for
lock screen and message list notifications.
This change breaks notifications with custom content, but only
temporarily - we will soon provide a hook to allow customizations
again.
We no longer have a single notification actor that is either displayed
as banner or reparented to the summary depending on state - both the
lock screen and the notification section of the message list create
their own UI based on the information attached to the notification
object. Adding to this that different representations of a notification
may now exist simultaneously (as they are included in the message list
immediately rather than after the banner has been displayed), it no
longer makes sense to keep the banner actor in the notification itself.
Add a new NotificationBanner class that provides a separate banner
implementation based on the message list's NotificationMessage that will
soon replace the existing notification banners.
Both the screen shield and the notification section in the message
list create their own UI for notifications rather than using the
notification actor itself. Currently there is no clean way for such
representations to include notification actions - we will need this
as we will soon use a separate actor for banners as well, so keep
track of actions added via addAction().
Notifications in the message list cannot be expanded, however we will
soon use NotificationMessage to re-implement notification banners, where
we still want actions and expanded content.
While this functionality logically belongs to the future banner subclass,
it is cleaner and easier to have the basic support in the base class.
This also leaves the door open for expanded notifications in the summary,
should that become a thing again.
The panel is not visible when in fullscreen, but critical notifications
may still be shown - having them pop out from where the panel would be
looks unpolished, so adjust the trayBox accordingly.

It was removed as actors that should not affect the input
region can simply be added to the uiGroup instead. However
the property is useful to add non-reactive chrome, but then
use trackChrome() to add a child to the input region.
This reverts commit e62d22a50e.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
Occasionally it makes sense to constrain to a monitor's work-area
rather than the entire monitor, so implement that behavior and add
a property to turn it on.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
St's hover tracking uses ClutterInputDevice, which unfortunately may use
an outdated cursor position to determine which actor is hovered. Using
MetaCursorTracker instead would fix this, but would require linking St with
libmutter - avoid this for now by manually fixing up Clutter's view of
the pointer position in the case where we rely on it working properly.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
While applications can no longer spam the users with a constant stream
of banner notifications, it is still possible to drown the summary in
the message list. Avoid this by limiting the number of notifications a
single source is allowed to display simultaniously.
test-xy-stress in libnotify's tests suddenly became fun again ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
We want to shield users from being overloaded by an overwhelming stream
of notification banners, either due to coming back from idle/lock or
because an application is misbehaving. Previously we replaced all queued
notifications with a summary notification in that case, but now that
notifications appear in the summary immediately, we can simply stop
adding them to the queue and rely on the date menu to convey that
information to the user.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
The summary may contain notifications that have not been seen by the user
and won't be shown as banner. Currently this is only the case for resident
notifications that are emitted by the focused app, but it will become more
common as we will start limiting the number of queued notifications.
Indicate to the user that more notifications are available by displaying a
small dot in the top bar button.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
Source::count-updated is emitted as notifications are added or removed,
which is correct for the primary notification count. However it is not
for the unseen count, which will also change when a notification is
acknowledged without being removed. At the moment this does not matter,
as the unseen count is only used on the screen shield and notifications
are never acknowledged while the screen is locked. However we will soon
use the unseen count in the normal session as well, so emit the signal
in this case too.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
The message tray is now empty and about to be removed, so an indication
at the bottom edge of the overview becomes an odd location to convey the
status of the summary. We will eventually display an indication in the
top bar that unseen messages are available, for now just remove the
existing indicator.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
Using a "There are too many notifications" notification is a bit odd,
and we will address the issue differently soon. So rather than update
the notification to do something else than opening the mostly empty and
useless tray when clicked, remove it altogether.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
No Source subclass used it to do anything special, and with sources
no longer having any UI representation on their own, doing anything
else isn't useful either, so just kill off that hook.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
It was a nice feature, but with sources no longer being represented in
the UI, there is no longer a way for users to make use of it. If we want
to bring the feature back in the future, it would probably make more
sense to implement via the chat source's policy anyway.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
Since the summary area was removed from the message tray, Source are not
longer represented in the UI, so right-click menus and summary icons are
no longer a thing.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
The notification list in the calendar drop-down now functions as summary
area, so we can drop it from the message tray and remove a lot of complexity
from the state machine.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744850
There is not good reason why activating a GTK+ notification should
behave fundamentally different from fd.o notifications - we don't
raise the app because we expect it to perform an appropriate action,
but that does not include closing overview or calendar for us ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Just like we leave the overview when activating a notification,
the calendar popup should be closed - after all, the only case
where the calendar is open when a notification's default action
is activated is the user clicking an entry in the message list's
notification section.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Display notifications that have not been dismissed in the message
list - eventually this will replace the existing message tray summary.
Notification messages show icon, title and one line of the body and
can be clicked to activate the default action. However they cannot be
expanded, so other actions or the full body text are not accessible
in this mode.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Since notification support was added to the lock screen, notifications
are no longer necessarily represented by the actual notification actor
anymore. However when an existing notification is updated, external
representations currently become outdated.
Emit an appropriate signal which allows them to update.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
When we will start to show notifications in the date drop-down, we
will not use the actual notification actor, but construct our own UI
based on Calendar.Message. This is similar to what we already do in
the lock screen, except that in this case clicking the notification
should activate the default action.
So rename the existing _onClicked() method to activate() to make it
clear that such use is acceptable. While not strictly necessary, also
rename the corresponding signal to match.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
As the popup's height depends on its content, which itself varies
depending on the selected day, browsing the calendar can result
in distracting size changes. To avoid this, the design calls for
the height to be frozen to the previous one in that case.
As the popup will always open with the current day selected, we
don't have to be very sophisticated and can just lock the popup
to the height corresponding to that day.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
The message list is not only a replacement for the calendar events
list, it will also take over the notification summary from the
message tray. As we start drawing events from other sources than
calendars, hiding it based on whether or not any calendars have
been set up is no longer appropriate, so always include it in the
calendar drop-down now.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Turn the existing EventsList into a MessageListSection and add the
message list to the calendar drop-down. The new events list only
displays events for the currently selected day, but in a more
structured and friendlier way than the old one.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
The message list is a scrollable list that will hold sections of
different types of time-related messages like notifications,
calendar events or birthday reminders. When no section displays
any content for the selected date, a placeholder is shown instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
We will start using both URLHighlighter and the _fixMarkup() helper
method the same way it's used in MessageTray. Usually we should
make fixMarkup() public and call the existing methods, but we are
planning for them to go away soon, so just keep two copies until
the original one is removed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
We will soon replace regular menu items in the calendar drop-down
with more complex elements.
However there will still be items that should close the drop down
when activated - rather than making the menu available throughout
the hierarchy (and eventually from outside as well when we add the
notifications list), have a public method on a global object just
like the ubiquitous Main.overview.hide().
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
Menu items are on their way out of the calendar drop down, so let's
start with the easy one. This one is removed without replacement,
but then the Date & Time panel should be a one-time stop for most
users anyway, so not having a direct shortcut should not be much of
a problem. It is also the last remaining Settings item outside the
system menu ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
The new design has the events list on the left and the calendar on the
right, so swap them around and remove the vertical separator between
them in favor of some additional whitespace as in the mockups.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744817
This used to be the style-class for status icons (i.e. icon-only
top bar items). It got unused a while ago when the class used
by status icons stopped using it - except for the keyboard indicator,
which set the class manually to appear as status icon despite not
being a real icon.
Now that the button highlight is provided by the .panel-button class
on a parent, the obsolete class results in a double border on the
keyboard indicator when active - just drop it from there as well
to fix.
So we can style it differently than :hover.
We already have a active state for the menu items which includes
more than hover. For example, when the keyboard focus moves to a item
or we select programatically a item.
For this reason we need a style class named active for the meaning we
give to it in menu items, and a pseudo class active with the meaning
CSS has.

This capability was only really useful for media players, and with
music notifications no longer being special, we can simplify a bit
by removing support for it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744815
Music is no longer a special type of notification according
to the design. If we want to resurrect the functionality, we
can reimplement it with a dedicated API like MPRIS rather

According to the design, hotplug notifications should no longer offer
an eject action and use regular notification buttons (but using icon
and text), the default action when clicking the notification itself
is to launch the file browser.
Also as the corresponding resident notification is gone, it no
longer makes sense to make the notification transient.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744815
The new notification system will no longer give access to actions
from the notifications list, so a notification that is never
displayed as banner does not make sense here.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744815
Tray icons make for a terrible UI on their own, but trying to
shoehorn them into the notification system has only made them
worse. At least for the time being this removal is temporary
and support for tray icons will be back, but no longer as part
of the notification system.

When opening a panel menu, we set it's max-height to the available

Ouch, classy - we are telling translators to use a '24h' time
format for the '12h' time format string.
Luckily, only a handful of translations actually followed the
comment (de,hu,id,is,kk,nb,nl), and most of the corresponding
locales do not support 12-hour format anyway (only is_IS, at
least on Fedora).
We assume that applications that export a 'new-window' action can open
a new window, so we add an appropriate entry to the context menu.
However this duplicates functionality if the application already
exposes the action via the desktop file - don't add our own entry
in that case.

This DBus API is intended to be used by gnome-control-center's
displays panel to show monitor labels.
Each output (i.e. hardware monitor) identified by its
org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig API ID has at most one label. On
mirrored setups, all the labels for outputs corresponding to the same
logical monitor (i.e. showing the same contents in the same mode) are
shown together.
At most, only one DBus client at a time is allowed to show labels.

When using dynamic workspaces, a new workspace will be appended
when moving a window down to the last (empty) workspace. It makes
sense to extend the behavior in the opposite direction, and prepend
a new workspace when moving a window up from the first workspace.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=665764
New workspaces are inserted by shifting all windows on workspaces
below the insertion position down. As a result, when the new
workspace is inserted before the active one, we end up with
the illusion of a workspace switch. Instead, activate the workspace
on which the windows from the active one ended up.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=665764
We are not supposed to mess around with OR windows, so don't try
to shift them to a different workspace. This fixes a warning with
newer versions of mutter.

Input method preedit text needs to be disabled on password entries
for security and usability reasons.
IBus 1.5.7 provides the signal set-content-type so that panel UIs can
handle these special purpose input entries:
https://github.com/ibus/ibus/commit/6ca5ddb302c9
Unfortunately IBus versions older than 1.5.10 have a bug which causes
spurious set-content-type emissions when switching input focus that
temporarily lose purpose and hints defeating its intended semantics
and confusing users. We thus don't use it in that case.

We check for (metasNeeded.length == 0) at the beginning of the function,
which is only ever called when when a non-zero number of results is
received back from the provider. Effectively, this means that
(metas.length != metasNeeded.length) will also catch (metas.length == 0)
and print a nicer message to the log.
The updateSearch() function is called in SearchResults every time new
search hits are available from a search provider; SearchResults will
wait for updateSearch() to complete in a callaback, to update the
overall progress of the search operation.
updateSearch() will call _ensureResultActors(), which will in turn call
getResultMetas() on the search provider, which is an operation that can
fail arbitrarily or return inconsistent data, as it's entirely in the
hands of the search provider.
In case _ensureResultActors() returns a failure, updateSearch() is
currently failing to notify the passed-in callback, which might leave
SearchResults in an inconsistent state: make sure the asynchronous flow
always ends up with a notification to the updateSearch() callback.
So that we'll recreate it the next time we want to show it. Otherwise,
we'll try to call things on a half-destroyed ResizePopup and end up
causing errors instead of showing the user their resize popup.
This will allow g-s-d to handle actions differently based on the
current mode - namely, allow the power button when locked, but
make sure to never show any dialogs in that case.

When animating workspace switches, windows on the old and new workspaces
are temporarily reparented. If windows are restacked, those windows will
thus be ignored by mutter until meta_switch_workspace_completed() resyncs
the stacking at the end of the animation.
As a result, activating a window on another workspace that is not on top
of the stack is very noticeably a two-step operation of switching workspace
and raising the window. There is a technical reason for that order[0], but
we can avoid the visible disruption by manually syncing the stack during
the switch operation.

Just like keybindings and the message tray pointer barrier, gestures
don't always make sense - for instance, swiping up the screen shield

the left edge should not open the overview.
To avoid this, restrict gestures based on the current keybinding mode.

While the default Shell style is fairly decent with regard to
accessibility requirements, having the ability to tweak certain
aspects where the regular style works less well is still useful.

the default stylesheet when a high-contrast theme is requested
(as determined by the GTK+ theme name).

_hideDone checks _shown to determine if anything has shown the overview
while we hid it, and if so, shows the overview forward just in case.
In a local patch that called _hideDone immediately inside _hide for
testing, this broke. While we don't actually depend on this anywhere,
it doesn't hurt so that the next person to hack this up (perhaps me!)
doesn't get stuck debugging it for 20 minutes.
Since moving to a GFile based API in commit 642bf2b778,
setThemeStylesheet() no longer accepts %null to revert to
the default theme. We should have some way to revert to the
default and the least intrusive option is to return to the
old behavior, so do that.
Correctly computing the ISO week number is tricky and we already
have code in the platform to do it, so just refer its computation

There is currently no simple way to inject into AppIcon's state change,
so an extension that wants to do this has to destroy/remove/update all
icons in the Shell (i.e. in the Dash, AllView, FrequentView) on enable()
and disable() after updating AppIcon.prototype._onStateChange, or the

To solve this issue, we rename _onStateChanged to _updateRunningStyle,

Thursday 0800-1000 Foo, and Wednesday 0900-Friday 1200 Bar and today

Currently, multi-day events are shown as individual appointments on each
day. This patch ellipsizes multi-day events to indicate continuation on
the prior or following day (or other time-period.)
The time label spot is now replaced by a box layout that contains the
prefix ellipsis label, the time label and the postfix ellipsis label.
In order to keep the alignment, ellipses are merely invisible (zero
opacity) when hidden.
The ellipses are styled using the events-day-time-ellipses class which,
by default, take the color of the event text.
When RTL is used, the box contents are adjusted accordingly (clutter
does that for us).
An event spanning three days now displays "...All Day..." in the
calendar on the second day.

It is really annoying for the user to acknowledge multiple notifications
when they queue up. So, to prevent a notification flood that has to be
handled by the user one-by-one, a summarized-notification feature is
added which leaves a single summarized-notification for the user,
replacing multiple notifications if the number exceeds 1, which they may
or may not acknowledge. When this summarized-notification is acknowledged,
the message-tray is opened where they can view the notifications that were
summarized. This helps the user concentrate on his primary task
simultaneously informing them about the new notifications.

We commonly mark strftime format strings for translation to account
for date/time representations without an existing strftime shortcut
("Yesterday %H%p"). As those translations are looked up according to
the locale defined by LC_MESSAGES, while the conversion characters
themselves are resolved according to LC_TIME, the result can be
rather odd when mixing locales ("Den 27. January"). The correct
solution would be to install translations for format strings in
the LC_TIME catalogue and look them up with dcgettext(), but we
don't have the infrastructure to do that easily. Work around this
by adding a helper method that looks up a string in LC_MESSAGES
using the locale defined by LC_TIME and use that to translate
format strings, which has the same result.

Most of the code handles the sources setting being empty and
InputSourceManager.currentSource being null because previously the
"model" (i.e. the sources list) was kept in gnome-settings-daemon.
But this is fragile and since we're now the canonical place where the
list lives we can force it to never be empty even if the gsetting is
empty or contains only invalid entries. Adding the default keyboard
layout in that case is the safest thing to do.

Commit a4475465f1 fixed the wrong alignment for the fully visible

align them with the corresponding edge is always 0. It's controls
on the right that need a different offset when the available width
exceeds the child's width.

The spring animation has to use clones to escape any clip set on the

Can't wait to double the size of this list when these start using D-Bus

These were actually renamed in GNOME 3.12, but we couldn't do anything

It was assumed that BackgroundSource objects were always destroyed
on monitor changes because the BackgroundManager objects that hold
references were destroyed, but sequencing of updating of different
BackgroundManager objects meant that was not the case.
Properly update any cached Background objects held by the
BackgroundSource on a change to the monitor layout; in particular this
means updating animations in case they are multi-resolution.
All other submenus link to the corresponding settings, so we should

This lets us considerably clean up the event flow here and change how
things are structured. It also makes sure that we never show "No
Results" -- search.js not being aware of the timeout means that it might
not think that any work was being done when we show the page.
Keep a flag depending on whether a provider is in-flight, and use that
to determine what status label to show.
This ensures that we only show "No Results" when we're done searching
and we're sure that all providers have returned results back to us.
The complexities of tracking these two things separately, with the
display on one half, and the searching on the other half, is difficult
to manage. Squash it all together.
It is quite weird to have those calls/signals using WindowClone as an

And use it to lookup the local WindowClone that applies. Otherwise,
WorkspaceThumbnail.WindowClone objects may be mistakenly set, which
are not usable interchangeably with Workspace.WindowClone ones. This
may lead to several misbehaviors as fields available in the second

values get used in math ops, which result in NaNs over the place.
Likewise, the similar functions in WorkspacesViewBase subclasses take
now MetaWindow arguments too.

Currently we consider the last item animating being the last actor of
the list, but that's wrong since the last item animating depends on the
distance between the source actor and the original position of the
animated actor.
Take that into account to check the last item of the animation.
The code that cleaned up when a background actor was destroyed tried to access
the Background as backgroundActor.background._delegate but when the destroy
signal is emitted, the MetaBackgroundActor was already disposed and
backgroundActor.background NULL.
The rewrite of Mutter's background code (see bug 735637) requires
corresponding changes here - we no longer need to layer multiple
MetaBackgroundActors together.
The general strategy is that a BackgroundSource object is created
per GSettings schema, and keeps either one Background/MetaBackground pair,
or, for animation, a Background/Metabackground pair for each monitor.

To avoid that make the actors non reactive while animating.

Commit 12845f0eef reset translationX to 0 to fix the slide-in
animation of the dash when dragging a search result, but 0 is the
wrong value for the thumbnail slider - the next time it will be
shown, it will just pop up instead of sliding in due to translationX
already being at its target value.
Fix this by making _updateTranslation take the actual visibility into
account and call that to set the correct translation in dragBegin.
Controls are slided in by animating translationX from the actor's
width to 0; however as _updateTranslation() will skip the animation
when the property is already at its target value and 0 happens to be
the initial value of translationX, the initial animation is skipped.
Fix this by initializing translationX to undefined, which will always
differ from a valid target value.
The comment is right, updating the translation should be deferred
to pageEmpty, or else overview controls will just pop up instead
of sliding in. So revert that part of commit 6a7fa52879.
Providers that need drag-and-drop behavior can implement this via the
createResultObject() hook (as the app search provider already does), no
need to duplicate that code in the generic result objects
(ListSearchResult already does not implement DND).

Following design mockups, animate the icons on AllView, FrequentView,
Dash and Search to zoom out when opening a new window of the app or when
the app is not running and the user execute it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=734726
Given that we animate indicator in, it makes sense to animate them out
as well.
Also make possible animating indicators between view changes as well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=734726
Following design decision, we want to animate AllView and FrequentView
when opening and closing with a swarm spring form.
This involves a few changes needed to allow that, since from some time
now, we are animating page changes in viewSelector, using only a fade
transition. However now we want to let appDisplay and iconGrid apply its
own animation.
For that we special case the change to and from apps page on
viewSelector to let appDisplay to animate its own items, using and API
on appDisplay which at the same time uses an API on iconGrid.
Thanks Florian Müllner for the debugging work

This reverts commit a84fb99c0a.
This commit didn't make the OSK fully operational yet on Wayland, and
caused the double emission of key events on X11 due to the OSK keys
receiving first touch events from the passive touch grab, and then
emulated pointer events from event selection after the touch sequence
was rejected in the grab.
When we make a better effort at handling touch events just once on X11,
this commit can be reapplied and remaining wayland OSK support resumed
from there. In the mean time, this patch is better reverted.

Commit bbfa616f27 renamed _ignoreRelease to _ignoreUntilRelease
in some places, but not others, which broke GrabHelper.ignoreRelease().
Complete the name change to fix the fallout (e.g. app launcher menus
closing on button release).
The code from PanelMenu.Button assumed menus would open below their
source actor, making KEY_Down a good choice; however with the new
generic code, we should base the key used on the actual menu position.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=735614
The behavior of opening/closing/navigating a menu from its source
actor is generic enough to not limit it to PanelMenu.Buttons, so
move the code into PopupMenu itself.

Since mutter commit 527c53a2a0582eba, MetaWorkspace::window-removed
is emitted *before* MetaWindow:workspace is updated, so the test
whether the removed window should still be on the workspace in
question will always return true.
Assume the test is no longer necessary nowadays to fix this very
obvious regression.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=735608
Currently we are removing tweens of the button and border, but not from
the title. That causes the title to be in wrong positions sometimes when
dragging windows on the overview, given that the slider is moving and
therefore the windows + overlay are moving too.
To avoid that, remove tweens of the title as well.
The code that loads SHELL_BACKGROUND_IMAGE, which is used to load the
performance background was loading it in WALLPAPER mode, not ZOOM
mode. Zoom mode is what we use for the actual GNOME defaultiwallpaper
and what we want to test: the background will be scaled except when
the resolution matches the 2560x1440 default backgrounds.

Users can now toggle geolocation off/on from privacy panel of
gnome-control-center so we don't need to clutter the menu with a
settings that most users won't touch most of the time.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=731122
The scale passed to _updateChildrenScale is exclusively computed from
properties, so it can be moved into the function itself - as the scale
now becomes a mere detail, rename to a more appropriate _updateIconSizes
at the same time.
The existing code broke when commit 792b963bda changed the custom
result actor hook to return an object instead of an actor - stop
trying to go through a _delegate to make it work again.
Commit 14ceb10555 changed the "Open Calendar" item to open the
"recommended" calendar application rather than the default one to
avoid problems with MIME subclassing (namely falling back to the
default text editor when no calendar app is installed).
With this change however, the application launched does no longer
necessarily match the one configured in Settings, which is unexpected.
To avoid both problems, use the default calendar application again,
but only if it is in the list of recommended applications.

Search providers that should be disabled by default come with

Performance testing was producing inconsistent values at different
times in the day since the GNOME default background is animated and
sometimes has a single layer, and sometimes two blended layers.
So we have consistent numbers, install a simple animated background
with GNOME Shell that has 40-year long transition ending in 2030,a
and set an environment variable in gnome-shell-perf-tool so that the
background is override with that background. (The background depends
on files installed by gnome-backgrounds; we assume that the person
running performance tests is doing so within the scope of a full
GNOME install.)

All derived classes are already checking explicitly for action names
(FOO and FOO_BACKWARDS). mutter used to have a META_KEY_BINDING_REVERSES
flag for keybindings which required special handling of "shift"+FOO as
FOO_BACKWARDS, but this has been removed now, so this special handling
is no longer necessary.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732296
When this flag is set on a MetaKeyBinding, mutter will know that
the keybinding has an associated reverse keybinding triggered with
the shift modifier. However, an undesirable side-effect is that
gnome-control-center keyboard panel does not know that this 'shift'
is reserved for these reverse keybindings and cannot detect
conflicting bindings in this case.
This 'reverse' logic can now be handled at a higher level (in gcc keyboard
panel) so this commit removes it from gnome-shell so that they do not
conflict.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732296
Now that mutter gives a way to check if a MetaKeyBinding was marked as
'reversed' or not, gnome-shell does not have to hardcode that a
MetaKeyBinding using a shift modifier is reversed, it can directly check
if the appropriate flag is set.

We were setting the value of adjustment on size changes, but we weren't

Since these settings are now going to be accessed by
gnome-control-center as well, its more appropriate for them to live in
gsettings-desktop-schemas.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=734483
Having the on/off setting be backed by a boolean in dconf makes sense
anyway but this is mainly to be able to remember the max accuracy set
before user disabled geolocation so that when they enable it next time,
we have the max accuracy level on same value as before.
There hasn't been a real need for this but now we are about to add
geolocation settings in control center and it'll be easiser for
control-center to simply toggle a boolean property rather than to have
to know about and deal with accuracy levels.
Later we might also want to add accuracy level settings to privacy panel
so keeping the accuracy level setting around still. However we no longer
support 'off' accuracy level as the new boolean property covers that.
This also implies that we no longer track available accuracy level,
which made the code a bit hard to follow/maintain.

The zooming animation of the windows looks nice when animating
from the workspace display page, but looks weird from other pages

with an initial position not known to the user.
Instead of that just fade the desktop with the windows in its
original position.

Currently we are overriding the explicit calls to slideIn
given that it's called also with the signal of showing overview.
It was necessary because of the bug that previous patch fixed,
so now we can just delete that.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732901
The slide of thumbnailWorkspace is shown when entering overview,
connecting to the same signal that creates the thumbnails, the showing
signal of overview, but, to make the slide animation we need to know how
much width the slider has. To do that we ask the thumbnailsWorkspace
about its width, but given that it connects to the same signal it could
ask the width without having created the thumbnails yet, so reporting a
width of 0 and confusing the slide animation.
Currently it works because gjs calls the callbacks following the order
of the clients connecting that signal, and the thumbnailsWorskpace is
connected before the slide ones.
To avoid that we allow to request the preferred size of the
thumbnailsBox at any time with any number of thumbnails. The only thing
required is to make sure the porthole is accessible when requesting the
preferred size.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732901
We were calling twice showPage() with the correct page, here and in
show() / zoomFromOverview given that _resetShowAppsbutton was called
from the signal 'showing' of overview. Given that the call to
_resetShowAppsbutton is only actually used when hiding the overview we
can actually put the checked state of the button to false when animating
from overview so it shows the workspace page, causing the same behavior
of _resetShowAppsbutton without all the shenanigans of resetting when
the hiding overview signal is triggered.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=732901
Currently the indicators are a BoxLayout inside a BinLayout in AllView.
BinLayout doesn't have any size constraint, so if the indicators request
a bigger size than AllView the entire overview is grown, causing the
overview to go crazy.
To avoid that, create an actor for the page indicators that request as
minimum size 0, and as a natural size, the sum of all indicators natural
sizes. Then we clip_to_allocation, so it doesn't grow more than the
parent.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=723496
If the application reports itself as single window (through
an explicit indication in the desktop file or some heuristics),
not show a "New window" item that doesn't actually open a new window.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=722554
Both Panel.ActivitiesButton and its parent class Panel.MenuButton would
attempt to connect their own _onEvent() function to Clutter::event,
which counterintuitively was connecting the child class' _onEvent()
function twice.
So, actually chain up on the signal handler, and don't connect twice
to the signal. Both methods were calling this.menu.close(), so only
do that on the parent class handler, since we're chaining up and doing
the right thing now.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=733840
We don't need to wait to until the stage window is mapped to take
the modal grab, because that code now runs in a startup-prepared
signal handler, which in turn runs some time after the mainloop
has started and well after the stage window is mapped.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=711682
The grab would previously just consume the button release, while propagating
motion events, possibly down to clients in wayland. This would produce
inconsistent streams there.
On pointer events, the inconsistency would just be having clients receiving
events with the button 1 set in the mask, with no implicit grab. When touch
events are handled, this would be more hindering as the client would receive
touch_motion events with no prior touch_down nor later touch_up, something
never supposed to happen.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=733633
The animation is the same for modal dialogs, but it is now
run for non modal dialogs too (matching the new behavior on
show).
In addition, we run a destroy animation for normal windows,
if they use CSD (there are technical limitations that prevent
running animations after destroy on server decorated windows)

Currently to know how many results we could show for GridResults
we use the width of the bin containing those results. Since it's
expanding it shouldn't be a problem. But it becomes a problem when
no results are displayed, thus the container becomes hidden and
it losts its allocation.
In the next introduction of terms in search we call again
maxDisplayedResults but it doesn't have allocation yet, and therefore no
results are displayed (currently a bug on IconGrid makes the min size =
one icon, so actually we show one and only one icon in this case).
To solve that use the parent container which contains the search results
of all providers or the text label with not displayed results, so it
always have the real available width to calculate maxDisplayedResults.
Thanks Alban Browaeys for the debugging footwork.

Unlike for the main app view, where we only move the key focus once the
users starts navigating, the key focus is moved immediately when opening
a folder popup. This is unexpected, so make app folders consistent with
the main view.
As arrow keys will not work while the container itself has key focus, we
handle those explicitly by translating them to TAB_FORWARD and
TAB_BACKWARD respectively.

We currently replay events that should start a search to the search
entry, which is fairly dodgy. Synthesize a new event with the correct
source actor instead, which is a bit less evil.
If an active grab on pointer events happens during multi-touch operations,
all non-pointer-emulating touches will be muted. This may leave the
Clutter.ClickAction incomplete if triggered by one of those sequences,
just to have a gesture take over and trigger a compositor grab, which would
leave the capture-event handler stuck eating events.
So listen for grab-op-begin from the display, and ensure the action is
released if such grab begins.
and the capture event handler stuck.
When returning to the desktop from overview we always show the
workspaceDisplay, given that is which have the windows clones to allow
animations.
The problem becomes when previous that we were at some other
page, like Search or AppDisplay. The problem is that when showing the
workspaceDisplay the windows are repositioned. That's wanted except
when returning from overview, since that causes unwanted animations
of the windows.
To avoid that just not reposition the windows if leaving the overview.
We don't normally hit the code in scripting.js to print metrics
because shell-perf-tool bypasses it, but there was a left-over
in the code that no longer works. Also add in the units to the
output.

They are different properties, they deserve different syncs.

We already have the width and height information cached in JS,
let's avoid going through gjs-gobject-clutter to retrieve them
again. As a plus, with normal properties the optimizer should
be able to generate better code.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=729823
We must remove the old image from the cache, not the new one.
This was causing a leak of old (and expensive) background
images, and was causing errors at the end of animations, trying
to destroy the animated background.
We translate 'On' to available accuracy level but if available accuracy
level later changes, we don't update available accuracy level accordingly
and hence limit the accuracy of apps.
E.g if available accuracy level is 'city' and geolocation is enabled,
the max accuracy level would be 'city' and apps can't get higher than
that. Now if user plugs in GPS, the available accuracy level will change
to 'exact' but without this patch max accuracy level will remain to be
'city' and apps will not be able to use the GPS.

Commit 5d00c1a5ee moved app folder popups to GrabHelper - for some
reason, the line that ensures the current behavior of only considering
events inside the app picker to dismiss popups got lost ...
As clicks outside the app picker should still be handled normally
while clicks inside should dismiss the popup, we cannot make full
use of GrabHelper. However using it at least for focus handling
fixes some minor details we are getting wrong, for instance not
restoring the previous focus after dismissing a folder popup.
Commit 6c2f3d1d17 moved pref overrides into JS to implement
session mode specific overrides in a clean and generic way.
However that approach comes with a cost - doing the overrides only
after having handled over control to JS means that the core will
be initialized with the non-overridden settings before changing
to the correct values. In the best case this is unnecessary work,
but it can in fact have a worse effect: when initializing workspaces,
we will restore the previous number of workspaces when using
dynamic-workspaces and reset to the configured number otherwise.
As the non-overridden default for dynamic-workspaces is FALSE, we
can easily end up moving the user's windows to the "wrong" workspace.
Now GSettings is expected to grow support for session specific defaults,
which will render our entire override system obsolete (yay!). Given
that, it seems acceptable to use a less generic (and uglier) approach
in the meanwhile, in order to fix aforementioned problems. So move
overrides back before core initialization and just hardcode the
session-mode => override-schema relation.

The 0x0 dummyCursor works well when the menu pops up directly underneath
the pointer (e.g. when triggered by right-clicking the titlebar) or by
keyboard, but not when triggered by the menu button - the menu does not
point to the center of the button's bottom edge, and unless the user
keeps holding the mouse button while moving into the menu, the menu will
be dismissed immediately on button release.
Address these issues by using the button geometry to overlay the window
button with an appropriately sized actor that acts as a proper sourceActor,
to make the window menu behavior consistent with other shell menus.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=731058
Having the full geometry of the menu's source button (if any) will
allow us to address several misbehaviors of window menus, so use
that instead of show_menu().

When the pointer leaves the notification area, we queue a timeout to
hide the notification after a little while. If the user is hovering over
a notification and clicks the X button to close the notification, we will
destroy the notification, which causes a "pointer left" event on the
notification area. This queues a timeout which erroneously fires after
the next notification in the queue shows up.
The code and state machine are too complex to properly make sure this
timeout doesn't fire when there is no notification up next, so instead
just clear it when showing a notification to make sure that any
previously queued timeout doesn't apply to us.

Starting keynav into the active page is handled from a key-press
handler on the stage, however we should not "start" keynav when
we are already navigating elsewhere - the latter can happen when
keynav fails (for instance because the focus is trapped inside an
open app folder or at the end of the dash), and the event bubbles
up to the stage. So make sure to only handle the event to actually
start keynav, to not interfere with the normal navigation handling.

the monitors-changed signal before OsdWindowManager does (which will

When dragging a window preview from a non-primary monitor onto a
workspace thumbnail, the window is moved to the primery monitor
first before changing its workspace. However when dragging the window

with the default 'workspaces-only-on-primary' setting, as the newly

Currently, our logic for page panning isn't great. If the user starts a
pan upwards and hesitates over a new page, we'll go to the *next* page
on release, since the difference is greater, but the velocity wound down
to 0.
Instead of trying to treat it like page down or scrolls, simply do the
math to find the page where the user scrolled to.
This is unfortunately broken for fast swipes, since the user doesn't get
far enough into the new page to make a difference. I'm getting the
impression we'll need a gesture recognizer for this, though, however
crude. Simple hacks I tried, like a velocity multiplier, didn't work
properly.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=729064
We often call goToPage like:
this.goToPage(this._currentPage - 1);
(or + 1). During panning, these are based on the velocity values
of the gesture action. If we're already on the first or last page
and the panning ends, it's possible to get goToPage that's either
-1 or greater than the last page.
During normal usage, this isn't a problem, since the Y values will

When workspaces have been removed, we need to remove the corresponding
thumbnails as well; the number of thumbnails that need removing is
the difference between the old number of workspaces and the new one.
Currently we assume that the old number of workspaces corresponds to
the number of existing thumbnails, but that may actually be wrong:
A thumbnail will still be animated out after its workspace has been
removed. As a result, we end up removing too many thumbnails when a
workspace is removed while a thumbnail of a previously removed workspace
is still animating out. Fix this by basing the old number of workspaces
only on thumbnails that have not been removed previously.

If geoclue reports that we can't aquire location, we hide the menu. This

When reacting to background settings changes, we may end up queuing
more than one load. The redundant backgrounds are expected to be
destroyed when the previous background has faded out; however since
commit 933f38390b, the tweened actor is the same for all
consecutive load operations and we end up with a single onComplete
handler, ergo a single destroyed actor.
As new backgrounds are always added to the bottom, we are not only
piling up additional background actors, but break changing backgrounds
more than once, as the correct background ends up being covered by
previously added redundant actors.
Fix this by destroying redundant actors right after loading rather
than waiting for the fade animation to complete.

Folders use a 2x2 grid of the first 4 app icons as icon - if a folder

If we have the following sequence:
cache.getImageContent({ filename: "foo", cancellable: cancellable1 });
cache.getImageContent({ filename: "foo", cancellable: cancellable2 });
cancellable1.cancel();
Then the second load will complete with "null" as its content, even though
it was never cancelled, and we'll see a blank image. Meanwhile, since the
second load simply appends to the list of callers for the second load,
cancellable2 does absolutely nothing: cancelling it won't stop the load,
and it will still receive onFinished handling.
To prevent this from happening, give the actual load operation its own
Gio.Cancellable, which is "ref-counted" -- only cancel it when all the other
possible callers cancel.

At the moment when a file is loaded, we iterate through the list of
pending file loads and ignore any unrelated to the file, then iterate

all four corners rounded. But when the source(click/arrowOrigin) is
near screen's edges, one of the corners (depending on source's position
and arrow alignment) is drawn right angled.
This happens because the rounded corners are skipped and right angled
arrow is drawn when arrow origin is close to the edges.(That's why when
arrow-rise is 0, it forms right angled corner).
So, a few condition checks are made to ensure that right angled corner
is not drawn.

Right now we have three "dummy cursor" widgets between the background
menu, the message tray menu, and the IBus candidate popup. Consolidate
these into one "dummy cursor" widget which is tracked in the layout

Rather than GMenu / app-folder-categories. This removes our last use of
gnome-menus in the stock gnome-shell, which is exciting, but also means
that app folders in Software start working.
Ideally, we'd have a button to launch our Software app as well from the
overview.

One of the most frequent complaints about our launching behaviour is
how we handle terminals. Among all MDI applications, the terminal is
the one that is most likely to have lots of semi-independent windows
opened at the same time, and spawning new windows is much more common.
More so, if it does not support tabs.
Therefore, we special case terminal launchers to always create a new
window. It is an application that most non-technical users will not
use, so chances of them being confused by any special behaviour is
expected to be low.

You would think we would already do something like this, but apparently
lots of code was calling hide() without checking if the box pointer was

If monitor-changed fires at startup, it will destroy all of the
backgrounds, but since this._isStartup is true, won't recreate any
of them. Additionally, since _bgManagers is indexed by monitor index,
if the primary index is not 0, it could become a sparse array (e.g.
[undefined, undefined, primaryBackground]), and our for loop will
crash trying to access properties of undefined.
Fix both of these issues by always creating background managers for
every monitor, hiding them on startup but only showing them after
the startup animation is complete.
One thing we need to watch out for is that while LayoutManager is
constructing, Main.uiGroup / Main.layoutManager will be undefined,

Our gnome-shell tweener integration has had hooks to determine when
the tweens have started and completed... except that they had a bug
in them. When a tween completed, it queued an idle handler to run
the callback in. If no tweens were running when the idle was removing,
it reset the tween state that contained the idle handler ID. It also
returned false, meaning that the source would always get removed.
If the actor had a tween in-flight when the idle was fired, it wouldn't
clean up after itself. While this is also a simple bug fix, remove the
callback so we don't queue unnecessary, unused idles.

There's a potential race condition in the search code: if we have an
outstanding search call to a provider for search "A", and if before it comes
back we do a subsearch for "AB", we won't have any results to pass along.
Previously, we used an empty list when storing the provider results, so we
effectively told the remote search app to filter through this empty list for
any search results that meet the new query, meaning we showed the user 0
results for the provider in this case.
Now that we don't store an empty list, but instead store `undefined`, this race
raises a warning. Solve it by doing an initial search query in this case
instead.
The search code isn't too smart about chained subsearches: now, if we hit this
race while already on a subsearch, we'll do an initial search for the subsearch
query instead, but that is much better than showing the user nothing. This
could be fixed in the future for a performance improvement.

When a notification becomes expanded, it's either already shown,
or in the process of being shown. Don't set the state to SHOWING
again, which confuses our state machine.
The asynchronous nature of extension loading, session loading, and more,
makes the code racy as to what is initialized first, and hard to debug.
Additionally, since gjs is single-threaded, the only code we're running
in a thread anyway is readdir, which is going to be I/O bound, so the
code here is actually likely to be faster.
Drop this in favor of some good old fashioned synchronous loading.
We currently only ensure that width and height are positive, so it
is still possible to pass in values that don't make any sense at all

We want to move away from gnome-menus eventually, so the simple
utility method isn't really worth keeping around. Reimplement it
in the one place that uses it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698486
Long ago, the search system worked in a synchronous manner: providers
were given a query, and results were collected in a single array of
[provider, results] pairs, and then the search display was updated
from that.
We introduced an asynchronous search system when we wanted to potentially
add a Zeitgeist search provider to the Shell in 3.2. For a while, search
providers were either async or sync, which worked by storing a dummy array
in the results, and adding a method for search providers to add results
later.
Later, we removed the search system entirely and ported the remaining
search providers to simply use the API to modify the empty array, but the
remains of the synchronous search system with its silly array still
lingered.
Finally, it's time to modernize. Promises^WCallbacks are the future.
Port the one remaining in-shell search engine (app search) to the new
callback based system, and simplify the remote search system in the
process.
`a + b ? c : d` is parsed as `(a + b) ? c : d`, not the more intuitive
`a + (b ? c : d)`.
This was causing a bad slide animation and Clutter warnings when coming

Before, workspacesOnlyOnPrimary was implemented in quite a crazy manner:
* If workspacesOnlyOnPrimary was false, we'd create one WorkspacesView per
monitor, with the primary one being a bit special.
* If workspacesOnlyOnPrimary was true, we'd create one WorkspacesView, and
additional montiors would be handled inside that WorkspacesView as
"extra workspaces".
This caused numerous bugs as the two modes weren't consistently
implemented, and a lot of code was duplicated between all the modes.
Fix this by always creating WorkspaceViews, even if it only handles
one interface. We do this by having two different WorkspacesView-ish
classes: WorkspacesView handles the traditional combination of lots
of workspces, and a new ExtraWorkspaceView is in control of only one
workspace.
Right now, the workspace update code is complex and spread across parts:
WorkspacesView takes a set of workspaces and looks like it owns them, but
WorkspacesDisplay is actually in charge of setting them up and creating
new ones for each WorkspacesView.
Change initialization and handling to move all of the creation/destruction
responsibilities to WorkspacesView.
We pass in monitorIndex into each WorkspacesView, which is a lie in the
workspacesOnlyOnPrimary case, as the primary WorkspacesView currently has
the responsibility of handling the extra workspaces on all the other
monitors. The commit will clean this up and punt the responsibility back
to WorkspacesDisplay.
Not because ClutterActor is bad or wrong, but because I always get
confused on the difference, and having them both in SlideLayout
makes the code a bit easier to read and understand.
The parent SlidingControl had an onOverviewShowing, but we had
overridden it with the same code in both subclasses. Just move it
back to SlidingControl.
When we create a result actor, cache it, so it can be used for
subsearches of the same initial. For now, to keep memory usage
and the stage graph relatively clean, don't persist the actors
across searches, but maybe we should do this in the future.
This also means that we don't query getResultMetas for items
that we've seen in the same initial search.

The existing provider system is split between a confusing mess of
RemoteSearch, SearchSystem, SearchDisplay, and ViewSelector, partly
because of the vestigal in-shell search system. Move most of the
logic to search.js so it's easier to read.
We fetch and store the list of providers from the search system when we
construct SearchResults, but we never update this list when providers are
changed at runtime, causing various bugs making the search not seem as
snappy as it should be. Make sure to always fetch the list of providers
from the search system.
While the existing comment is correct in that a source's notifications
will be destroyed first, the code takes a shortcut which prevents the
Source::count-updated signal from being emitted. Given that the purpose
of the signal is to keep notification counters up-to-date which is
pointless when the source is about to be destroyed, the shortcut makes
sense; just save notifications explicitly in that case.

ditch it.

oVirt is software for managing medium-to-large scale deployments of
virtual machine guests across multiple hosts. It supports a feature
where users can authenticate with a central server and get
transparently connected to a guest system and then automatically get logged
into that guest to an associated user session.
Guests using old versions of GDM support this single-sign-on capability
by means of a greeter plugin, using the old greeter's extension
API.
This commit adds similar support to the gnome-shell based login screen.
How it works:
* The OVirtCredentialsManager singleton listens for
'org.ovirt.vdsm.Credentials.UserAuthenticated'
D-Bus signal on the system bus from the
'org.ovirt.vdsm.Credentials'
bus name. The service that provides that bus name is called
the oVirt guest agent. It is also responsible for interacting
with the the central server to get user credentials.
* This UserAuthenticated signal passes, as a parameter, the a token
which needs to be passed through to the PAM service that is specifically
set up to integrate with the oVirt authentication architecture.
The singleton object keeps the token internally so it can be queried
later on.
* The OVirtCredentialsManager emits a signal 'user-authenticated' on
it's object once the dbus signal is triggered
* When the 'user-authenticated' signal is emitted, the login screen
tells GDM to start user verification using the PAM service. The
authentication stack of the service includes a PAM module
provided by oVirt that securely retrieves user credentials
from the oVirt guest agent. The PAM module then forwards those
credentials on to other modules in the stack so, e.g.,
the user's gnome keyring can be automatically unlocked.
* In case of the screen shield being visible, it also will react on that
'user-authenticated' signal and lift the shield.
In that case the login screen will check on construction time if
the signal has already been triggered, and a token is available.
If a token is available it will immediately trigger the functionality
as described above.

that fit the available width; as labels' ClutterText ellipsizes by
default, the password labels allow entries to grow by shrinking.
Setting the appropriate ellipsize mode fixes this.

We already do this for looking glass, but it makes even less sense
for the normal run dialog - if a mode sets runDialog to false, the
intention is to not allow executing aribitrary commands.

Previously the animation was not entirely according to the mockup.
Now we are closer to the mockup.
The padding for the indicators are decremented, since we need that
to make the animation not too quick. As a drawback, maybe visually
is not as good as before, or the area to click dots is too much little.
Just make that change for now and test it widely, and we can change
that after.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707565
The original position was calculated with the stage and the
transformed position of the indicator when mapped. The values
were wrong on some situations, so lets calculate the position
based on the dots width.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707580
We currently update workspaces geometry when we are notified about
allocation changes of the overview group; however as the geometry
is based on stage coordinates, we miss notifications when the
allocation relative to the parent is unchanged, which happens when
the primary monitor's position changes but not its resolution.
Use a custom layout manager to give us a signal that is emitted
reliably.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708009
We need to adjust the offset of close buttons, in case the box
pointer has the arrow at the top. To do so, extend close buttons
to hook into a boxpointer (since that's the common use for them)
and automatically adjust their position.

Gdk uses Xwayland, so it only sees the events we forward to X11
clients. Instead, we can use the abstraction API provided by
mutter and get the right value automatically.
Also, we need to use MetaCursorTracker to handle the cursor
visibility too.

I thought that cancelDrag was called for completed drags as well,
but it's not. Move the updateHoverId source removal to dragComplete.

For extremely silly reasons with how the class framework works, the wrapper
method requires "this" to be bound in order for it to work, or else we'll
emit errors in strict mode.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707892
It is expected that the primary and secondary icons in entries
change places in RTL locales. When doing so, the edit-clear
icon must be replaced by an rtl variant too.

Before, separators naively checked whether their siblings were visible
using actor visibility. However, if section actors are visible but have
no visible children, this will fail. Special-case separators when doing
visiblity checks.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707801
When we show(), we need to make sure that the hiding animation
doesn't reach the end, otherwise we would hide the actor but
still have _visible = true.
We were relying on tweener overwriting to do this, but it
doesn't quite work, so better be explicit and do it ourselves.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707814
Just as we do in AllView, we set the offset of FolderViews' fade
effect so that no icon is faded when a full page is visible.
This works fine in AllView, however in the FolderView case where
the popup's offsets eat away from the available fade height, the
effect ends up being barely noticeable at all.
While it is not ideal to apply the fade to the edge of a "full page",
it looks less ugly than the current state, so pick the lesser evil ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707662
Since now if you focus the indicators, you can't scroll and
change pages in the app picker. That was reported as odd from
some users/developers.
So allow to scroll when the focus is in the indicators.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707609
A11y users who use the magnifier may have trouble
focusing when they're typing or trying to keynav.
Implement a new system so that they can have the
magnifier track the caret and focus instead instead
of just the mouse.
Bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647074
While this is good style anyway, after the latest appDisplay changes
the first call to get_preferred_height() happens before we properly
compute those properties, resulting in a size request of NaN that
triggers a Clutter warning.
ClutterActor::scroll-event has a boolean return value to indicate
whether the event has been handled, or event emission should continue.
Now that we are using an StScrollView, we depend on this to avoid
propagating the event to the view's own handler.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707409
It doesn't make sense to show the indicators in that case, so
don't show them. This has been the design in the first place,
but the code that did that was lost at some point during review ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707363
The frequent view is not useful when it doesn't contain any applications
yet. While the previously added label makes this state appear less like
an error (OMG, my apps are gone!), it doesn't address the issue of
usefulness - default to the more helpful All view in this case.

Similar to adapting the spacing dynamically to the available
space we already do, scale down icon sizes if the grid is too
small to fit the requested minimum number of rows/columns.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706081
IconGrid has never really been a general purpose container, but has
always been used in conjunction with BaseIcon. IconGrid will soon
gain the ability to adjust the item size dynamically to adapt to the
available space, which will require that we can make some more
assumptions about the items added to the grid (namely: we need
access to BaseIcon's setIconSize() method).
So change addItem() to take an object instead, which should have
an actor and a (BaseIcon) icon property.
Based on a patch by Carlos Soriano.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706081
Add methods to open/close extra space for n rows. The app picker
will use those to make AppFolder popups appear inline with the
main grid rather than on top of it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706081
The popup of the FolderView is now contained inside
the parent view, solving the overflow of apps with a ScrollView.
Also, solved a lot of bugs in popup/FolderView calculation
of position and size.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706081
Add a property to also add the calculated spacing
around the grid.
This will allow FolderView to be aligned with the
main grid without cutting off any of the surrounding
boxPointer decorations or the close button
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706081
When we adapt the grid to different display sizes,
we don't want the number of displayed items to get
too small. In the future we will scale down icons to
make sure that the grid fits add least minRows
x minColumns items, but for now we only take the
properties into account when calculating the dynamic spacing.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706081
Organize applications in AllView by pages using the new PaginatedIconGrid
added previously. Pagination is generally a better pattern for collections
than scrolling, as it better suits spacial memory.
Hook into AppDisplay's allocation function to communicate the available
size to the different views before child allocations - this is only
required by the paginated view (as pages must be computed before
calling get_preferred_height/get_preferred_width), but doing it for
all views will guarantee that their dynamic spacing calculation is
based on the same values.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706081
Since the parameter of the function is the width, reflect that in
the function name. Also, since we are counting columns, not only
children for each row, reflect that in the function name also.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706081
The new PaginatedIconGrid class acts as a container for pages.
So the new class provides the container behaviour and some
useful functions like positions of pages, number of pages, etc.
But, it doesn't add indicators of the pages and doesn't manage
the scroll of the pages, neither any management of the pages
like in which page currently it is, etc.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706081
This method, which accepts a .desktop filename, is used to highlight
a specific application in the overview, for example because it has
just been created or installed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=654086
We added special code to sort each row in the overview so that
windows were less likely to cross lines, but the awkward control
flow meant that everything but the last row got sorted.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707197
Activating the overview is fairly easy (hot corner, <super>), so doing it
automatically after closing the last window on a workspace does not save
a lot of effort; it does result in a surprising context switch when the
user does not expect the behavior.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=662581

We slide the shield over it, so the animation is rarely seen, and
since no other actor is under the lock screen, the not-cleared stage
can show through, causing weird issues when trying to blend.

When we implemented the new designs, we lost the ability to suspend
from the system menu. Re-enable this ability by re-adding the hidden
"Alt" shortcut item.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706612
We show a lightbox when we suspend, to animate the fading to black
caused by turning off the monitors, but we need to hide it when
coming back, otherwise the user is just staring at a black screen
it until he moves the mouse or presses a key.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706654
Sometimes gnome-session hands us a bad object path for JIT inhibitors
it creates for XSMP clients. While this is a bug in gnome-session, we
shouldn't show an empty-looking dialog here.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706612
When locking manually (or locking with an animation), fade the
screen to black after a small timeout. This provides a smoother
experience, instead of abruptly turning off the screen.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=699112
Unfortunately, display configuration can and does fail, due
to unspecified HW constraints, drivers bugs, unsupported exotic
configurations or just bad luck.
So when the user makes a change in the control center, show
a dialog asking him if it looks OK, and revert back after 20 seconds
otherwise.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706208
All our modal dialogs are given a fixed width and grow vertically
as necessary. Set the request mode accordingly, so that wrapped
labels are considered correctly during size request, and not only
at allocation time (where they'll either take away from the padding
or even cause the dialog to overflow).
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704015
The only point of using a custom container here was to prevent StBoxLayout
from enforcing the wrong request mode based on the orientation. With that
issue fixed, we can simplify the checkbox widget significantly.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=703811
Replace more direct XFixes usage with a the appropriate abstraction
API from mutter, which is guaranteed to work in wayland too.
It doesn't yet replace pointer position tracking, although probably
it should.
Also, because now we're using Mutter API, we lose the standalone
test case.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705911
Mutter now includes an object with the same purpose and functionality
as ShellXFixesCursor, so we can replace our XFixes code with it
and work under wayland too.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705911
Triangles should be flipped in RTL. This is the easiest way to do it that
doesn't rely on modifying the rotating logic, though it is a bit hacky since
the ClutterActor "scale-x" property technically considers the lower bound
to be 0. It works, though.
GrabHelpers use a 'captured-event' to steal events and emulate
modality or grab-like semantics. There can be issues when you try to
use multiple GrabHelpers stacked on each other. As Clutter follows
the DOM-like semantics of "first come, first serve", when a second
GrabHelper connects to 'captured-event', its callback will only be
processed *after* the first GrabHelper's callback is called.
This breaks the expectation of narrowing modality where new modals
take priority over the old ones.
Solving this globally in a cleaner manner would require a rewrite of
pushModal/GrabHelper. As a stopgap fix for now, use one shared
'captured-event' handler between all GrabHelper instances, and
delegate to the individual GrabHelpers.

This commit introduces a new BeginRequestType enum which gets
passed to the 'reset' signal to specify whether
a username should be provided to the begin() method and changes
the loginDialog to comply.
Currently, the signal only ever gets emitted with
AuthPrompt.BeginRequestType.PROVIDE_USERNAME
but that will change in the future when providing smartcard
support.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683437
We currently emit "failed" any time the UserVerifier is reset,
and user verification didn't succeed prior.
A more conceptually clear time to emit "failed" would be if
the UserVerifier is reset and user verification failed prior,
and to emit "failed" if the user cancels unlock.
This commit restructures things to do that. Aside from being
more conceptually clear, it also lays the groundwork for us
to be able to reset the unlock screen without failing.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683437
If we don't have a connection at startup or we transition from
having a connection to not having a connection, we need to make
sure we hide the correct indicators.
_updateState has a lot of variables that sort of gunk up the
code and make it more unreadable than need be. Clean up the logic
a lot by moving those variables into the places that they actually
matter, renaming them to remove prefixes, and remove some conditions
that are always met.
Right now the code chooses to animate based on whether or not the
notification was "removed", which is quite a sketchy subject. For
now, add an additional case so that we don't animate when we transition
to the lock screen.
When the triangle rotates (when sub-menu is expanded), it seems as if
the triangle pivots from one corner even though rotation center is set
to Clutter.Gravity.CENTER. Hence the rotation center is set nearer to
the edge than to the corner ([0.3, 0.5] instead of [0.5, 0.5]) so that
it doesn't appear odd.
Also pivot_point is used instead of rotation_center_z_gravity as it is
deprecated.

This will replace the indicator painted on the stage right now.
This unfortunately does not work for the recorder triggered by the
keybinding -- we'll simply replace the in-shell code with a keybinding
powered by gnome-settings-daemon.
The existing app menu was a kludge of legacy code that tried to manage
a bunch of state, and had a number of issues:
* It didn't properly manage visibility when combined with multiple
apps and the overview.
* It didn't properly manage reactivity when tabbing away from a busy
app to another app.
* It didn't properly disconnect signals when going from one app
to nothing.
and countless others. Rewrite it to use the new "sync" code pattern,
where we centralize all state management and do transitions from that,
rather than strange and quirky control flow.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705898
Make the lock dialog group reactive, to intercept any events
before they go to the actors below.
In the future, we may restructure our chrome to have a clear
layer system, but for now it fixes a security issue in the lock
screen (you can see the contents of the windows by dragging
if the screen was locked with the overview active)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705840
There's only two uses of the parameter left, which can easily be added as a
separate line below. Since it's really a private interface meant for the
indicators, make it private as well so external users are less likely to
use it.

To align the arrows, we need to allocate panel buttons the full
height of the tray. Fix up all of the panel buttons to support this,
and align the arrows in the middle.

Swap out the implementation of SystemIndicator with a dummy,
and build the aggregate menu. At the same time, remove the
poweroff and login screen menus, as those were fake aggregate
menus beforehand.
We lose some flexibility as we lose session-mode-based menu
layout, but as each component of the aggregate menu is supposed
to be "smart" in response to updating itself when session
state changes, I believe it's better than a declarative model.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705845
We can't silently replace the old behavior of separate status
icons into a new system. Replace SystemStatusButton with a new
SystemIndicator class which will allow for the flexibility we
need. For now, make it a subclass of Button so that it mostly
feels the same, but we'll soon be swapping it out with a dummy
implementation that the aggregate menu will use.
I think the code cleanup here is worth it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705845
This code is too complicated to keep, and the last straw came after the
fixed width menu in the aggregate menu design.
This will break some existing popup menus that rely on the fixed width,
but this will soon be replaced with the aggregate menu. We'll also soon
clean this up further by replacing PopupBaseMenuItem's custom layout code
with an StBoxLayout.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705845
Showing the new message at full size marks an abrubt change and looks
bad. Instead, gradually animate from 0px to full natural height.
Includes hacks to workaround flickering scrollbars while the animation
is in progress.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687660
If that fails (which only ever happens in initial-setup mode, which
has no unlock or login dialog), we don't want to go ahead with
whatever we were doing.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=701848
If we don't remove the animation, we might leave a pending call
to _lockScreenShown() which would confuse our state tracking into
thinking we're active when we're not.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=700901
Using a signal handlers causes us to depend on connection order, but
we need the message tray code to run last, so it can notice that
notifications are destroyed when hiding the boxpointer and skip
the broken animation.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=686855
When we shift workspaces to create a blank one for a window or
application, all of the window actors are shifted down. However, some
of these window actors are transient windows attached to a main window.
When these windows are moved to a different workspace, the main window
is moved along with it. When the main window is moved, these windows
are also moved. This creates a double move of the windows.
This double movement leads to unexpected results where workspaces are
collapsed and windows are in incorrect positions.
This patch prevents movement of these transient windows, only grabbing
the main (ancestor) windows to move to a different workspace.

Remove the Wi-Fi chooser from the menu and put it in a dialog instead.
This frees up the submenu to simply have three items: an rfkill toggle,
a button to show the dialog, and a button to show network settings.
Ideally, we'd autodetect the "needs network" case by user initiation
and automatically show the dialog if needed, but lower-level plumbing
is neccessary, so the menu item to show the dialog is an acceptable
compromise instead.
This is a part of the new system status design, see
https://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Design/Guidelines/SystemStatus/
for design details.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704670
Since the network section of the aggregate menu will be shown in the lock
screen, we need to ensure that users can't tweak with network settings or
anything like that.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704670
Replace NMNetworkMenuItem with NMConnectionItem, based on
NMVPNConnectionItem, and replace NMDevice with NMConnectionSection
and NMConnectionDevice.
Since this rips apart NMDevice, and since wi-fi should not be
connection-based, we'll temporarily remove NMDeviceWireless. We'll
add it back in a later commit, along with the new Wi-Fi dialog.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704670
Instead, just add them after they're constructed. This allows us to
not have to pass the connections to each device, and prevents issues
with having to enumerate the connections in the middle of construction.

This is a part of the new system status design, see
https://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Design/Guidelines/SystemStatus/
for design details.
Note that this does have an interesting side effect of not showing
network connectivity status on wired. This is intentional, and error
states will still be shown in the top bar when they happen.
This also means that if you're connected to both wired and wireless,
even though wired is the default route, we'll first notice the wireless
active connection, and we'll show that in the top bar. New NM API that
will help figuring out the active connection of the default device is
being implemented to stop this from happening.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704670
The code is complicated by requiring overflow, and in order to incrementally
improve the code to match the designs, remove overflow.
In the new design, we'll have a fixed number of menu items, and Wi-Fi
will be done by a separate design, so we can't be too concerned with
the menu not fitting on the screen.
This is a part of the new system status design, see
https://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Design/Guidelines/SystemStatus/
for design details.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704670

I intended to make a few code cleanups, but I apparently forgot

hooked up to.

As we only reload search providers on startup or when the sort order changes,
and given the small number of search providers we'll actually load, I doubt
we'll see any speed decrease.
The simplicity of synchronous code is also much clearer, and fully avoids
all the possible bugs about in-flight requests or similar.
This also prevents issues with multiple search providers showing up at once,
which happen when multiple requests to reload search providers get called
immediately, with the existing in-flight async requests never cancelled.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=700283
When we reload the remote search providers, we currently try to remove
all remote providers, and then re-scan. It turns out that we sometimes
remove the wrong providers from the remote provider list, causing us to
have some providers not correctly unloaded.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=700283
Similar to our ClutterContainer monkey-patching, we can add some

The point of fading the icon is to make the text displayed over the

We've long had the hasWorkspaces property, but it doesn't seem like
it was ever used. Implement it so that we don't have workspaces in

Since it's difficult to make it change at runtime with a decent set
of semantics, and we never expect that to happen, don't bother
implementing it dynamically.

commit ea02380c15 made the login
screen stop using ModalDialog. It makes sense for the unlock
code to also stop using ModalDialog, too (for similar reasons).
Now that the login screen's auth prompt code has been separated
out, the unlock dialog can use it to get the buttons and spinners
etc, that it was previously getting from ModalDialog.
This commit drops the ModalDialog usage in the unlock dialog, and
makes the unlock dialog use GdmUtil.AuthPrompt instead.

Right now when a user types their password to unlock their session
we end up getting an unlock signal from GDM right away. We then
proceed to deactivate the screensaver before the user has a chance
to read his messages.
This commit makes sure we clear out the message queue before processing
the deactivation request.

Add an option to limit the appSwitcher to the current workspace. For users

We need to make sure that we reset the opened submenu when we close the

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=702539
It seems this behavior at one time was intentional, but I (along with
the designers) think it looks ugly having the menu having its insides
shrinking and shifting around while fading out of existence.
There's two cases where we currently explicitly try to animate the
submenu closed -- when an item is clicked inside the submenu, and
when the toplevel closes. This removes both of those.
The user expectation is that submenus will be closed the next time the
toplevel is open even if they were open before, so force submenus closed
when the toplevel finishes fading out, without any animation.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=702539
As the aggregate menu will be built out of sections from each
of the menus, we need to ensure that activating an item in one
of these sections can close the main menu, even when it is not
a menu item. The new API also needs to be flexible enough to
ensure that animations can be controlled, like the buttons that
lock the screen or launch a new session.
Port the user menu to use this new API as well.

A PanelMenuButton added to the top bar might not be visible at all

Instead, close the menu automatically in that case.

The duality of the Clutter's key focus and mutter's window focus has long been
a problem for us in lots of case, and caused us to create large and complicated
hacks to get around the issue, including GrabHelper's focus grab model.
Instead of doing this, tie basic focus management into the core of gnome-shell,
instead of requiring complex "application-level" management to get it done
right.
Do this by making sure that only one of an actor or window can be focused at
the same time, and apply the appropriate logic to drop one or the other,
reactively.
Modals are considered a special case, as we grab all keyboard events, but at
the X level, the client window still has focus. Make sure to not do any input
synchronization when we have a modal.
At the same time, remove the FOCUSED input mode, as it's no longer necessary.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=700735
We can easily implement much of the same behavior ourselves by
keeping track of Clutter's focus events. Reintroduce heavily
modified FocusGrabber to do the work for us.
This will temporarily break when the user selects a window until
we can make gnome-shell automatically set the stage focus.
This also removes our only use of focus grabs, so remove those
as well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=700735
We can't assume "isActive implies isModal", so there is a risk
of pushing a modal that nothing else will ever pop, because we
take the early return and don't activate the user active watch.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=700901
_updateIcon should not attempt to sync any active connections, as the
icon-changed signal can be emitted in response to something done during
_syncActiveConnection. In the case of VPN, removeActiveConnection would
cause an icon-changed signal to be emitted immediately, but the state
would not be updated, causing us to call removeActiveConnection over and
over.
Explicitly sync all active connections when we know it needs to be done,
and simply make _updateIcon synchronize with the current device's icon.

This fixes a blue background being drawn when switching the monitors
configuration using hardware keys
(clone/multimonitor/external/internal).
The problem is that the shell gather all background loading requests
under the same meta_background_load_file_async call using one
GCancellable (the first one to come). So when the shell receives a
batch of 12 or so XRandr events, it creates 12 new background managers
which end up trying to load 12 times the same background picture. All
of these requests are batched into the same
meta_background_load_file_async using the first GCancellable received
on the first request. Unfortunately, when the first request is
cancelled by the following event indicating a new monitor setup, all
of the background picture requests are dropped on the floor, and
nothing gets loaded (hence the blue screen background).

...
}
This commit moves AnimatedIcon to its own file so we can drop that

When the osd window is hidden based on the timeout, it accidentally
left the timeout ID in place. When a subsequent switcher popup came
up, it thought the OSD window was scheduled to be hidden and tried
to re-hide the actor. This caused the tween to be run along with
an extra call to enable_unredirect_for_screen.
When the allocation of the workspacesView changes during the animation we override
the tween with one that does not animate causing the overview zoom animation
not to happen.
Fix that by ignoring the alloactionChanged notification during the overview
animation.
The code here before was trying to play hierarchy tricks to

We currently monitor the shell's override schema for changes to
the 'dynamic-workspaces' key, which ends up being the wrong
schema in classic mode. With the new ability to use mode-specific
overides, we can finally fix this.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=701717
This will allow the use of mode-specific defaults. For classic mode
we currently implement this with mini-extensions, but this may result
in confusing behavior when settings change due to extensions being
disabled during screen locks (not to mention that those mini-extensions
are hardly an elegant approach).
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=701717

Currently we "only" grab the keyboard when starting a drag operation,
which does not impede keybindings to be processed. This is at best
not harmful (like workspace switching), but may have unintended effects
otherwise - for instance, the hot corner is disabled, so having the
corresponding keyboard shortcut still active is fairly odd (not to
mention that it leaves the system in a confused state).
Fix this by switching to pushModal()/popModal(), which will push a
dedicated keybinding mode for us.

We currently only keep track of old placeholders when moving past
the dragged app's current favorite position, as this is the only
case where we need to worry about jitter. Still, moving it into
_clearDragPlaceholder() allows us to consolidate code paths, which
is a good thing ...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=684618
The function currently only resets the placeholder position if
there is a placeholder; this is not necessarily true, as the
placeholder may be reset outside _clearDragPlaceholder().
If this happens, the placeholder will temporarily stop working
for the "old" position (and permanently if it's the only position).
Just reset the position unconditionally.

Now that we control our own destiny, I noticed that getResultsToDisplay
is the only user of this._notDisplayedResult, and it's called immediately
after setResults, which is the only thing that sets it. Just remove the
stateness entirely.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693836
Since the provider icon only appears in the list results, it makes
sense for that to be stored with the results class, rather than outside,
triggered by which sort of display it is.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693836
It turns out that this focus code broke sometime in the 3.6 cycle --
when updating results, the focus is always on the text entry, so this
never gets called. We'll eventually replace it with something that
keeps track of the focused result meta, but for now, remove it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693836
While this is a very simple translation right now, soon enough it will
be so that it will have a less crazy "public" API and can do things like
cache result metas.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693836
Since the two paths that call this want to keep the actor in two different
states, it makes sense to just call the one function that's the same between
both individually.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693836
Right now, this doesn't give us very much, since IconGrid and StBoxLayout
have different APIs. But since we want to introduce result caching, it
makes to reduce the duplication we already have so we don't need to add
the code to do so in both places.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693836
pushResults, and the original async search API, were originally intended
so search results that weren't immediate could be added as they come in.
Since then, we've decided that the design of search results is that they
should finish at once with all results. Thus, the code was modified so
that pushResults always overwrote the current result set. As such, it makes
sense to rename the method so that the name matches the behavior.

Commit d0310bd745 blindly replaced global.overlay_group with
Main.layout.overviewGroup, but unlike the former, the latter is
hidden while the overview is not active, which makes it unsuitable
for the message tray's light box. In fact, with the removal of
global.overlay_group, there is no longer a container which may
be used both inside and outside the overview, so we can either
recreate the lightbox each time we show/hide the overview, or
use different lightboxes altogether; this opts for the latter.

Currently we simply set the gsettings key when activating an input
source. This obviously introduces a time window, between the event that
activates the switch and when the switch is complete, under which key
events are being delivered to applications and interpreted according
to the previous input source.
The patches in bug 696996 introduce a DBus API in g-s-d that allows us
to know when an input source if effectively active. Using that and
freezing keyboard events in the X server until we hear back from g-s-d
we can ensure that events won't be misinterpreted after an input
source switch.

Variable names like "sourceNotificationStackDoneShowing" are too
long, and too undescriptive: this one points to a source, not a
notification stack that has been done showing.
As the close button of folder popups overlaps at the top, it ends
up being cut off if the folder is located at the very top of the
view. Fix this glitch by taking the button's overlap into account
in that case.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694371
We already take care of growing the view if open folders overlap
at the bottom, however folder popups may still end up being cut
off when opening above the source icon - if the popup is high enough,
its y coordinate will be negative and therefore outside the parent's
allocation. To fix, we can either make sure that folders pop up below
their source icon in that case, or adjust the parent grid's position
as necessary while a folder is open. This implements the latter.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694371
If the view doesn't fill the available space, content should still
start at the top rather than the center - not least the positioning
code for folder popups assumes that, so set the appropriate expand

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694371
The main overview actor was made reactive to catch scroll-events

Currently we show the workspace popup for relative targets ("up", "down"),
but not when targetting a specific workspace directly.
There is not really a good reason for that difference, and as we are about
to introduce a new shortcut to target the last workspace (which does vary
with dynamic workspaces), it makes sense to unify the behavior and always
show the switcher.

Some keyboard spot a dedicated search key, which gnome-settings-daemon
currently handles by spawning gnome-search-tool. It makes a lot of

Like screenshots, the screen recorder can be a useful tool in other cases
than being triggered by a keyboard shortcut. To account for that, export
a Screencast DBus API similar to the existing Screenshot interface.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696247
Our built-in screen recorder is implemented as a component, so it will
just be disabled when the session mode doesn't allow screencasting.
However we will expose screencasting functionality on DBus as well, and
while it makes sense to restrict its availablity to the same modes as
the existing recorder, exporting/unexporting the service depending on
the session mode is not very consumer friendly.
For that reason, add an additional 'allowScreencast' property that for now
mirrors the availability of the 'recorder' component.

There is not always a clear distinction between code and style,
which is why the interface ends up being mostly unusable when we

The date actors get destroyed and recreated on every date change which drops
key focus for the selected date. Restore key focus in such a case, but only
when the selected date was actually clicked. Whenever the next/prev month
buttons code is used (for scrolling, mouse click, or keyboard click), have
the corresponding button grab focus. Changing months currently causes the
calendar to update twice as the eventSource gets changed, so key focus gets
lost if it is on a date when the month changes.

The nautilus icon sticks out pretty badly among the symbolic
icons we use for other desktop components. This commit finds
windows of type DESKTOP, and uses the video-display-symbolic
icon for them.

Since we now have global.screen::in-fullscreen-changed, remove the
duplicate signal. To prevent ordering problems in connecting to
this signal, make inFullscreen a property-function of a new Monitor
object rather than a data property we tack on to a Rectangle object.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649748
If we created a workspace after showing the view, we would never
set the geometry on it, which would cause an exception in the
window layout code and leave the DND state tracking in an undefined
state.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=699029
We put these "access point objects" in "this._networks" and
"this._activeNetwork", so let's rename it. This also makes
the fact that each "access point object" can contain multiple
access points a tiny bit less confusing.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698918
NM is now a lot smarter about dealing with automatic connections, so just
create an empty connection and pass it to it. The only places where NM
requires connection settings is where we require explicit setup: Bluetooth
DUN, WPA-Enterprise and WWAN/VPN. These cases are already handled by
gnome-control-center, where complex configuration is handled, so remove
the automatic connection management for now and just let NM handle it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698918
We already do this when navigating between menus via mouse or
keynav, but miss cases where a menu is opened by other means,
for instance via a keyboard shortcut.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=686756
It makes sense to allow closing the app menu with the same shortcut
that is used to open it, so make it a toggle action and allow it
TOPBAR_POPUP mode.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=686756
Currently all keybindings are disabled while some popup menu is open.
However some keybindings may still be useful in some cases, so expose
GrabHelper's modal params parameter to allow specifying a keybinding
mode for particular menus.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698938
Eval() is expected to return a boolean success value and a string result.
However when the function is disabled (via the development-tools setting),
we return null for the latter which is not a valid string value.
Return an empty string instead.

Since [1], GIO supports generic serialization and deserialization of a
GIcon into a GVariant. This is also implemented by GdkPixbuf and could be
used instead of our homegrown code for it.
This commit adds support to another 'icon' key in the metas dictionary
returned by applications for it. The previous 'gicon' and 'icon-data'
keys are still parsed and supported as before, but are now deprecated.

StLabel doesn't like that we set its properties after destructions,
and this would happen in currentInputSourceChanged() at the end,
when setting the ornament.
As the context menu and notification boxpointer can only appear if we already
take a modal grab, grabFocus will have problematic results if the focus does
somehow change.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698483
This simplifies the code required to build remote menus and
put all the items in the right place, and makes us share our
implementation with GTK+.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698427
This makes it easy to replace the dot with another label in the future.
Change the allocation logic, as text layout is more complicated than
simple icon logic.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698427
If windows are removed or added, we shouldn't keep the old layout, as it's
not valid anymore. If windows are removed, this is especially bad, as the
rows contain references to the removed window objects, causing crashes.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698622
Instead of applying an additional scale factor to all the rows in the
layout, only do it for those rows that don't fit.
This avoids the visual distraction of resizing a row when there's no
need to.
Instead of doing an entire recalculation of window positions when
sliding the thumbnails box, simply recalculate the position and scale
with basic aspect ratio math. This also ensures that windows won't
miraculously swap positions, even if we reposition windows while the
thumbnails box is expanded.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694469
Split out the part that moves the window clones around from
the part that calculates the window clone positions, and rename
both methods so that the overall meaning is more clear.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694469
Repositioning will eventually be separated from recalculation
to accomodate two different geometries, so we'll need to do
the padding and area manipulation in two different areas.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694469
As we want to eventually track two geometries, we need to rename
our very plain "_x, _y, _width, _height". While we could just prefix
them, I think that stuffing them in an object makes more sense.
At the same time, make the variable and method name more descriptive
by adding such a prefix, as well as a bit of documentation.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694469
To ensure that we don't recalculate window layouts when zooming
in or out, we need to always pass the full geometry. This will
break window repositioning when we zoom back in; for the purposes
of commit clarity, this breaks this feature for now. It will be
added back soon.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694469
Filter out all applications which have the NoDisplay, Hidden or
Not/OnlyShowIn bits, as those are not meant to be launched directly.
This also allows the user to filter apps from the frequent view
using alacarte.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696949
If for some reason an extension needs to destroy the AppMenu object,
currently it is not possible to do this cleanly due to these signals
remaining connected.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698531
This was saved so that doing something which called relayout
but only changed the area rectangle would simply be needed to
recompute window scaling parameters. With the new overview
relayout, the flow control changed, it turns out that the
current layout is always cleared. Remove this for now, and we'll
put in a different strategy for this.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694469
Instead of creating a bunch of random actors and then passing
them off to the controls manager, let the controls manager
construct them. This leaves the controls manager in charge
of the ordeal.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694469
Putting the notification actor in the tray actor has caused a lot
of various bugs and glitches over the years related to syncing the
two, fizzling out events, and so on. It's a much simpler model if
we consider the notification actor and tray to be separate widgets.
As a side effect, this makes the context menu not pop up when we
right-click on notifications.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=695800
This does nothing while the tray is active, so it doesn't make sense
to track it on the tray. This also makes the code a lot easier to read,
with notification behavior being labeled "notification" rather than
"tray".
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=695800
With sticky keys, users should be able to press and release a
modifier and then press a key to activate a modifier-key combination.
Activating the overview on the Super key release keeps these
users from using keyboard shortcuts involving the Super modifier.
The solution implemented here is to simply disable the Super-release
binding if sticky keys are enabled. It is still possible to go
to the overview by using Super-S or Alt-F1.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=685974
This is a new, regular keybinding for going to the overview.
The default binding is Super-S, which goes well with Super-A
for going to the application grid.
This is separate from the existing panel-main-menu keybinding,
so that we can keep Alt-F1 opening the main menu in classic mode.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698251
In order to use a different spinner image in classic mode (or any
other mode specific style), get it from CSS rather than hardcoding
a particular image.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693688
For classic mode, we want to use a different styling for the spinner,
so we will pick up the image filename from CSS to make use of mode
specific styling. As the CSS will give us a full pathname, adapt the
API to take a full pathname instead of building it inside AnimatedIcon
from the passed basename.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693688
GrabHelper already takes care of putting the key focus back on the
widget that had it when the grab was established.
ShellEntry's close() has recently become harmful since it's now called
from the menu's destroy() method and that is called in the entry's
destroy handler which means that this._entry might no longer be valid
at close() time.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=697560
The actor is the same as the drag actor in this case, but we tend to
set properties on the drag actor and get them from the actor elsewhere
in this codepath. Make this consistent.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=697504
It turns out that we never destroyed modal dialogs when closing
them, causing them to still linger in the scene graph even when
there were no references to them in the JS. The one case where
we don't want to destroy modal dialogs after being closed is
endSessionDialog, so provide a parameter that allows classes
to override this behavior.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=697295
We chain up on _finish() to drop the grab and destroy the switcher
popup but we should activate the target window first because dropping
the grab results in the previously focused windows getting a focus in
event immediately followed by the focus out event from the target
window activation which we can easily avoid.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696259
This ensures that when we have windows that are already visible,
like desktop icons, they don't fly across the screen from what
seems to be hyperspace to get into view.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696323
if a slideshow file has a really large duration we'll currently
throw an exception.
This bug is aggravated by the fact that some versions of
gnome-desktop use UINT_MAX as a sentinel value to mean,
"don't ever update slide".
This commit treats durations that would overflow as infinitely
long.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696157
If a background gets requested from the cache while it's still
being loaded from an earlier call, then there will be two concurrent
loads of the same file.
That concurrency is mitigates the effectiveness of the cache and
also causes leaks.
This commit consolidates file loads so that concurrency doesn't
happen.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696157
Right now we only destroy the bgManager object when the
workspaceThumbnail is explicitly destroy with its destroy()
method.
This commit makes sure bgManager gets destroyed when the
workspaceThumbnail actor is destroyed without calling
destroy().
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696157
BackgroundManager connects to the changed signal in
the backgrounds it manages.
The signal ids for the changed signal connectionss are stored
as state on the background manager object.
If the background being managed changes while the manager
is still loading the old background, then the signal id
variable can get out of sync with the background object being
managed.
This commit ties the signal id to the background objects themselves,
so there is no opportunity for them to desynchronize.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696157
Normally backgrounds get evicted from the cache when their actor is
destroyed. If the actor changes content without destroying itself,
though, we should evict the old content from the cache, too.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696157
We currently only add the first instance of a background
to the cache. This means if the actor associated with that
background is destroyed, the content will be evicted and
it will need to get reloaded, even if it's already loaded
on another actor.
This commit ensures every content gets added to the cache.

In the (no barriers) fallback case handleDragOver has somehow
ended up being turned into a nop and thus breaking xdnd
overview opening.
Fix that by calling _toggleOverview() when a xdnd source triggers
it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696447
When commit 724a2bd7 changed the way to determine the default
calendar app, it dropped all special handling of evolution.
Unfortunately we still need it to not end up with the default
mail component, so add it back.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696432
Currently, if a button-press event results in releasing the last modal
grab (e.g. clicks outside the grabbed actors), we don't consider the
event handled and allow its emission to continue. If we consider
dismissing a grab as an action of its own, any additional action
triggered by the same event becomes an unexpected side effect.
Tweak the capture handler accordingly.

There is no reason why there shouldn't be a battery icon in initial-setup,
knowing how much battery you have left is useful in during setup as well.
This also fixes an exception in the lock screen caused by the combined icon
not finding the battery one.
