Instead of using a PaintVolume for a 2D region, and an internal
function, use the newly added queue_redraw_with_clip() method.
This removes the last bit of internal API usage in the
ClutterX11TexturePixmap actor.

ClutterInputDeviceX11 has been made private, so we cannot access it from
outside of clutter-input-device-core-x11.c. We should have simple
accessors for the min/max keycode, which is the only detail that we use.
Create the device manager during the event initialization, where it
makes sense.
This allows us to get rid of the per-backend get_device_manager()
virtual function, and just store the DeviceManager pointer into the
ClutterBackend structure.
All the functionality that ClutterBackendCogl provided has been moved
into ClutterBackend itself, so there is no need to have this class
around in the source.
Cogl-based backends can derive directly from ClutterBackend.
Don't replace create_context(): given that the X11 backend already uses
Cogl for the context creation, we can just provide the right data
structures ourselves.
Input backends are, in some cases, independent from the windowing system
backends; we can initialize input handling using a model similar to what
we use for windowing backends, including an environment variable and
compile-/run-time checks.
This model allows us to remove the backend-specific init_events(), and
use a generic implementation directly inside the base ClutterBackend
class, thus further reducing the backend-specific code that every
platform has to implement.
This requires some minor surgery to every single backend, to make sure
that the function exposed to initialize the event loop is similar and
performs roughly the same operations.
We still use ClutterGeometry internally in a couple of places, but we
should really move away from that flawed rectangle data type, and use
the Cairo one.
Sadly, we still have some public API that we cannot remove yet.
The Clutter backend split is opaque enough that should allow us to just
build all possible backends inside the same shared object, and select
the wanted backend at initialization time.
This requires some work in the build system, as well as the
initialization code, to remove duplicate functions that might cause
conflicts at build and link time. We also need to defer all the checks
of the internal state of the platform-specific API to run-time type
checks.
Previously, the Cogl backend was at times a subclass of the X11
backend, and at times a standalone one. Now it is the other way
round, with GDK and X11 backends providing the concrete classes,
layered on top of the generic Cogl backend. A new EglNative backend
was introduced for direct to framebuffer rendering. This greatly
simplifies the API design (at the expense of some casts needed)
and reduces the amount of #ifdefs, without duplicating code.

Since Xlib.h is such a terrible citizen when it comes to symbol
namespacing it's not desirable to include Xlib.h if it is not absolutely
required. Cogl now has a standalone cogl-xlib.h that should be included
whenever any xlib specific symbols are required.
This patch updates clutter to include <cogl/cogl-xlib.h> wherever
clutter needs to use xlib specific cogl apis.

Just like GLIB_DEPRECATED and GLIB_DEPRECATED_FOR, Clutter should have
its own wrappers for G_DEPRECATED and G_DEPRECATED_FOR, to allow opting
out of deprecation warnings.
Deprecation warnings are enabled by default, now, even when building
Clutter.
The ClutterGeometry type is a poor substitute of cairo_rectangle_int_t,
with unsigned integers for width and height to complicate matters.
Let's remove the internal usage of ClutterGeometry and switch to the
rectangle type from Cairo.

Clutter may be used together with GTK+, which indirectly may use
XInput2 too, so the cookie data must persist when both are handling
events.
What happens now in a nutshell is, Clutter is only guaranteed to allocate
the cookie itself after XNextEvent(), and only frees the cookie if its
XGetEventData() call allocated the cookie data.
The X[Get|Free]EventData() calls happen now in clutter-event-x11.c as
hypothetically different event translators could also handle other set
of X Generic Events, or other libraries handling events for that matter.
The G_CONST_RETURN define in GLib is, and has always been, a bit fuzzy.
We always used it to conform to the platform, at least for public-facing
API.
At first I assumed it has something to do with brain-damaged compilers
or with weird platforms where const was not really supported; sadly,
it's something much, much worse: it's a define that can be toggled at
compile-time to remove const from the signature of public API. This is a
truly terrifying feature that I assume was added in the past century,
and whose inception clearly had something to do with massive doses of
absynthe and opium — because any other explanation would make the
existence of such a feature even worse than assuming drugs had anything
to do with it.
Anyway, and pleasing the gods, this dubious feature is being
removed/deprecated in GLib; see bug:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644611
Before deprecation, though, we should just remove its usage from the
whole API. We should especially remove its usage from Cally's internals,
since there it never made sense in the first place.
Cogl has now been split out into a standalone project with a separate
repository at git://git.gnome.org/cogl. From now on the Clutter build
will now simply look for a cogl-1.0 pkg-config file to find a suitable
Cogl library to link against at build time.
This extends cogl_onscreen_x11_set_foreign_xid to take a callback to a
function that details the event mask the Cogl requires the application
to select on foreign windows. This is required because Cogl, for
example, needs to track size changes of a window and may also in the
future want other notifications such as map/unmap.
Most applications wont need to use the foreign xwindow apis, but those
that do are required to pass a valid callback and update the event mask
of their window according to Cogl's requirements.
As was recently done for the GLX window system code, this commit moves
the EGL window system code down from the Clutter backend code into a
Cogl winsys.
Note: currently the cogl/configure.ac is hard coded to only build the GLX
winsys so currently this is only available when building Cogl as part
of Clutter.
Instead of having cogl_renderer_xlib_add_filter and friends there is
now cogl_renderer_add_native_filter which can be used regardless of
the backend. The callback function for the filter now just takes a
void pointer instead of an XEvent pointer which should be interpreted
differently depending on the backend. For example, on Xlib it would
still be an XEvent but on Windows it could be a MSG. This simplifies
the code somewhat because the _cogl_xlib_add_filter no longer needs to
have its own filter list when a stub renderer is used because there is
always a renderer available.
cogl_renderer_xlib_handle_event has also been renamed to
cogl_renderer_handle_native_event. This just forwards the event on to
all of the listeners. The backend renderer is expected to register its
own event filter if it wants to process the events in some way.
The Cogl rework removed the Window creation from realize and its
relative destruction from unrealize; the two vfuncs also managed
the mapping between Window and Stage implementation that we use
when dealing with event handling. Sadly, the missing unrealization
left entries in the mapping dangling.
Since ClutterStageX11 already provides a ::realize implementation
that sub-classes are supposed to chain up to, and the Window ↔ Stage
mapping is private to clutter-stage-x11.c, it seems only fair that
the ClutterStageX11 should also provide an ::unrealize implementation
matching the ::realize.
This implementation just removes the StageX11 pointer from the X11
Window ↔ ClutterStageX11 mapping we set up in ::realize, since the
X11 Window is managed by Cogl, now.
This makes it possible to build Clutter against a standalone build of
Cogl instead of having the Clutter build traverse into the clutter/cogl
subdirectory.
This migrates all the GLX window system code down from the Clutter
backend code into a Cogl winsys. Moving OpenGL window system binding
code down from Clutter into Cogl is the biggest blocker to having Cogl
become a standalone 3D graphics library, so this is an important step in
that direction.
This gives us a way to clearly track the internal Cogl API that Clutter
depends on. The aim is to split Cogl out from Clutter into a standalone
3D graphics API and eventually we want to get rid of any private
interfaces for Clutter so its useful to have a handle on that task.
Actually it's not as bad as I was expecting though.
This implements a variation of frustum culling whereby we convert screen
space clip rectangles into eye space mini-frustums so that we don't have
to repeatedly transform actor paint-volumes all the way into screen
coordinates to perform culling, we just have to apply the modelview
transform and then determine each points distance from the planes that
make up the clip frustum.
By avoiding the projective transform, perspective divide and viewport
scale for each point culled this makes culling much cheaper.
Creating a synthetic event requires direct access to the ClutterEvent
union members; this access does not map in bindings to high-level
languages, especially run-time bindings using GObject-Introspection.
It's also midly annoying from C, as it unnecessarily exposes the guts of
ClutterEvent - something we might want to fix in the future.
http://bugzilla.clutter-project.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2575
In the future, we want event translators to be the way to handle events
in backends. For this reason, they should be a part of the base abstract
ClutterBackend class, and not an X11-only concept.
Use both the MappingNotify event and the XKB XkbMapNotify event, if
we're compiled with XKB support.
This change is also useful for making ClutterKeymapX11 an event
translator and let it deal with XKB events internally like we do for
stage and input events.

Since we need to find the stage from the X11 Window, it's better to use
a static hashmap that gets updated every time the ClutterStageX11:xwin
member is changed, instead of iterating over every stage handled by the
global ClutterStageManager singleton.
Clutter should just require that the windowing system used by a backend
adds a device to the stage when the device enters, and removes it from
the stage when the device leaves; with this information, we can
synthesize every crossing event and update the device state without
other intervention from the backend-specific code.
The generation of additional crossing events for actors that are
covering the stage at the coordinates of the crossing event should be
delegated to the event processing code.
The x11 and win32 backends need to be modified to relay the enter and
leave events from the windowing system.
Since we access it in order to get the X11 Display pointer, it makes
sense to have the ClutterBackendX11 already available inside the
ClutterStageX11 structure, and avoid the pattern:
ClutterBackend *backend = clutter_get_default_backend ();
ClutterBackendX11 *backend_x11 = CLUTTER_BACKEND_X11 (backend);
which costs us a function call, a type cast and an unused variable.
When we receive a ConfigureNotify event that doesn't affect the size
of the window (only the position) then we were still calling
clutter_stage_ensure_viewport which ends up queueing a full stage
redraw. This patch makes it so that it only ensures the viewport when
the size changes as it already did for avoiding queueing a relayout.
It now also avoids setting the clipped redraws cool off period when
the window only moves under the assumption that it's only necessary
for size changes.
Since the XI2 device manager code is going to be compiled only on
POSIX compliant systems, we can safely assume the presence of stdint.h
and include it unconditionally.
Hierarchy and Device changed events come through with the X window set
to be the root window, not the stage window. We need to whitelist them
so that we can actually support hotplugging and device changes.
The x11 backend exposes a lot of symbols that are meant to only be used
when implementing a subclassed backend, like the glx and eglx ones.
The uninstalled headers are also filled with cruft declarations of
functions long since removed.
Let's try to clean up this mess.
Slave and floating devices should always be disabled, and not deliver
events to the scene. It is up to the user to enable non-master devices
and handle events coming from them.
ClutterInputDevice gets a new :enabled property, defaulting to FALSE;
when a device manager creates a new device it has to set it to TRUE if
the :device-mode property is set to CLUTTER_INPUT_MODE_MASTER.
The main event queue entry point, _clutter_event_push(), will
automatically discard events coming from disabled devices.
Undeprecate the XInput-related X11 API: since we don't enable XI support
by default we still need to ask for it, and see if we have it after the
backend initialization sequence.
Event translation is now done where it belongs: we don't need a massive
switch in a file with direct access to private structure members.
So long, event_translate(); and thanks for all the fish.
We ask XI2 to get the client pointer for CLUTTER_POINTER_DEVICE, and
we use the attached keyboard device for CLUTTER_KEYBOARD_DEVICE. For
everything else, we return NULL.
This is a lump commit that is fairly difficult to break down without
either breaking bisecting or breaking the test cases.
The new design for handling X11 event translation works this way:
- ClutterBackend::translate_event() has been added as the central
point used by a ClutterBackend implementation to translate a
native event into a ClutterEvent;
- ClutterEventTranslator is a private interface that should be
implemented by backend-specific objects, like stage
implementations and ClutterDeviceManager sub-classes, and
allows dealing with class-specific event translation;
- ClutterStageX11 implements EventTranslator, and deals with the
stage-relative X11 events coming from the X11 event source;
- ClutterStageGLX overrides EventTranslator, in order to
deal with the INTEL_GLX_swap_event extension, and it chains up
to the X11 default implementation;
- ClutterDeviceManagerX11 has been split into two separate classes,
one that deals with core and (optionally) XI1 events, and the
other that deals with XI2 events; the selection is done at run-time,
since the core+XI1 and XI2 mechanisms are mutually exclusive.
All the other backends we officially support still use their own
custom event source and translation function, but the end goal is to
migrate them to the translate_event() virtual function, and have the
event source be a shared part of Clutter core.
ClutterX11TexturePixmap watches for configure events to tell when it
needs to name a new pixmap for the window. However, ConfigureEvents
occur on moves in addition to resizes, and doing round trips and
naming new pixmaps every time a window is moved is a real performance
killer.
Add clutter_x11_texture_pixmap_sync_window_internal() that takes the
size/position of the window as arguments rather than always calling
XGetWindowAttributes. This allows us to bypass all work other than
notifying the window-x/window-y properties when we get a ConfigurEvent
for a move.
The last received width/height is saved to allow us to also omit
XGetWindowAttributes on MapNotify events.
The public clutter_x11_texture_pixmap_sync_window() becomes a bit less
efficient since we no longer combine the roundtrips for
XGetWindowAttributes() and XCompositeNameWindowPixmap(), but it appears
to have no callers in current publicly available code.
Several FIXME's are added for areas where there are still weird things
going on in the code or improvements could be made.
http://bugzilla.clutter-project.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2356
When we handle Expose events we try and queue a clipped redraw of the
stage, but for some reason we were also redundantly calling
clutter_actor_queue_redraw for the stage which would negate the request
to queue a clipped redraw.
The "watch" function functionality in xsettings-client.c is designed
for setups like GDK where filters are per-window. If we are going
to pass all events to _clutter_xsettings_client_process_event()
anyways, we can just pass in NULL for watch.
This avoids a nasty infinite loop where an event would get processed
triggering removing a filter and adding a new filter, which would
immediately run and remove a filter and add another and so on
ad-infinitum.

There was an array whose length was define by a static const int
variable. GCC seems to consider this a variable-length array so it
will cause warnings now that -Wvla is enabled. We might as well make
this constant a #define instead to avoid the warning.
Move the private Backend API to a separate header.
This also allows us to finally move the class vtable and instance
structure to a separate file and plug the visibility hole that left
the Backend class bare for everyone to poke into.
Since we allow compiling Clutter without the XComposite extension
available, we need to protect the calls to the XComposite API with
the guards provided by the configure script.
One of the later changes made on the paint volume branch before merging
with master was to make paint volumes opt in only since we couldn't make
any safe assumptions about how custom actors may constrain their
painting. We added very conservative implementations for the existing
Clutter actors - including for ClutterTexture which
ClutterX11TexturePixmap is a sub-class of - but we were conservative to
the extent of explicitly checking the GType of the actor so we would
avoid making any assumptions about sub-classes. The upshot was that we
neglected to implement the get_paint_volume vfunc for
ClutterX11TexturePixmap.
This patch provides an implementation that simply reports the actor's
allocation as its paint volume. Also unlike for other core actors it
doesn't explicitly check the GType so we are assuming that all existing
sub-classes of ClutterX11TexturePixmap constrain their drawing to the
actor's transformed allocation. If anyone does want to draw outside the
allocation in future sub-classes, then they should also provide an
updated get_paint_volume implementation.
http://bugzilla.clutter-project.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2349
This is a workaround for a race condition when resizing windows while
there are in-flight glXCopySubBuffer blits happening.
The problem stems from the fact that rectangles for the blits are
described relative to the bottom left of the window and because we can't
guarantee control over the X window gravity used when resizing so the
gravity is typically NorthWest not SouthWest.
This means if you grow a window vertically the server will make sure to
place the old contents of the window at the top-left/north-west of your
new larger window, but that may happen asynchronous to GLX preparing to
do a blit specified relative to the bottom-left/south-west of the window
(based on the old smaller window geometry).
When the GLX issued blit finally happens relative to the new bottom of
your window, the destination will have shifted relative to the top-left
where all the pixels you care about are so it will result in a nasty
artefact making resizing look very ugly!
We can't currently fix this completely, in-part because the window
manager tends to trample any gravity we might set. This workaround
instead simply disables blits for a while if we are notified of any
resizes happening so if the user is resizing a window via the window
manager then they may see an artefact for one frame but then we will
fallback to redrawing the full stage until the cooling off period is
over.
Instead of triggering a full stage redraw for Expose events we use the
geometry of the exposed region given in the event to queue a clipped
redraw of the stage.
There is an internal _clutter_actor_queue_redraw_with_clip API that gets
used for texture-from-pixmap to minimize what we redraw in response to
Damage events. It was previously working in terms of a ClutterActorBox
but it has now been changed so an actor can queue a redraw of volume
instead.
The plan is that clutter_actor_queue_redraw will start to transparently
use _clutter_actor_queue_redraw_with_clip when it can determine a paint
volume for the actor.
*** WARNING: THIS COMMIT CHANGES THE BUILD ***
Do not recurse into the backend directories to build private, internal
libraries.
We only recurse from clutter/ into the cogl sub-directory; from there,
we don't recurse any further. All the backend-specific code in Cogl and
Clutter is compiled conditionally depending on the macros defined by the
configure script.
We still recurse from the top-level directory into doc, clutter and
tests, because gtk-doc and tests do not deal nicely with non-recursive
layouts.
This change makes Clutter compile slightly faster, and cleans up the
build system, especially when dealing with introspection data.
Ideally, we also want to make Cogl part of the top-level build, so that
we can finally drop the sed trick to change the shared library from the
GIR before compiling it.
Currently disabled:
‣ OSX backend
‣ Fruity backend
Currently enabled but untested:
‣ EGL backend
‣ Windows backend
When building actor relative transforms, instead of using the matrix
stack to combine transformations and making assumptions about what is
currently on the stack we now just explicitly initialize an identity
matrix and apply transforms to that.
This removes the full_vertex_t typedef for internal transformation code
and we just use ClutterVertex.
ClutterStage now implements apply_transform like any other actor now
and the code we had in _cogl_setup_viewport has been moved to the
stage's apply_transform instead.
ClutterStage now tracks an explicit projection matrix and viewport
geometry. The projection matrix is derived from the perspective whenever
that changes, and the viewport is updated when the stage gets a new
allocation. The SYNC_MATRICES mechanism has been removed in favour of
_clutter_stage_dirty_viewport/projection() APIs that get used when
switching between multiple stages to ensure cogl has the latest
information about the onscreen framebuffer.
I think this is what commit 2cf1405506 intended to do since it
specifically mentioned cleaning up the trap in
clutter_x11_texture_pixmap_set_pixmap, but although it moved the untrap
to only be done in the case where Pixmap != None it left the position of
the trap itself unchanged. This meant the error trapping wouldn't be
balanced if pixmap == None since the untrap wouldn't be done. We now
only trap and untrap around the XGetGeometry call done when pixmap !=
None.
