Send EOS to the complete pipeline instead of only to our own source.
When there are multiple sources in the pipeline (for example when we also
record audio), the pipeline will send the EOS to all sources in order to
shut down the complete pipeline.
Commit 6c2f3d1d17 moved pref overrides into JS to implement
session mode specific overrides in a clean and generic way.
However that approach comes with a cost - doing the overrides only
after having handled over control to JS means that the core will
be initialized with the non-overridden settings before changing
to the correct values. In the best case this is unnecessary work,
but it can in fact have a worse effect: when initializing workspaces,
we will restore the previous number of workspaces when using
dynamic-workspaces and reset to the configured number otherwise.
As the non-overridden default for dynamic-workspaces is FALSE, we
can easily end up moving the user's windows to the "wrong" workspace.
Now GSettings is expected to grow support for session specific defaults,
which will render our entire override system obsolete (yay!). Given
that, it seems acceptable to use a less generic (and uglier) approach
in the meanwhile, in order to fix aforementioned problems. So move
overrides back before core initialization and just hardcode the
session-mode => override-schema relation.

We now allow "appmenu" in the button layout to make synchronizing it

their settings to get in-window app menus even when using the shell,
actually pop up the app menu when the button is activated.

The switch to GNOME_COMPILE_WARNINGS() caused -Wall and other

It can be useful to augment the shell's search path by doing

them with the next element.

Since rebasing our AppSystem on GLib's facilities, we only ever
append to the id-to-app cache. So if an application is uninstalled,
shell_app_system_lookup_app() will still happily return it if it
was cached previously. For instance if a favorite app is uninstalled,
it keeps lurking in the dash until a restart.
To fix, filter out removed apps from the cache when handling
GAppInfoMonitor::installed-changed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=726414
Currently we update the scale factor on startup and when we get a
monitors-changed signal, which is not the only cases where the setting changes. We cannot listen for gdk-window-scaling-factor changes because it is not
exported to gdk.
So use gtk-xft-dpi which also indicates a scale factor change.
When someone changes gtk-xft-dpi directly without changing the scale factor
we will just re-read the gdk-window-scaling-factor so no harm is done.

While the named commit was correct for VPN connections, it didn't
work correctly for the initial secrets requests like when connecting

when none are found, but only if interaction is enabled. The

*were* correct, but 17726abb removed too much.

clutter_device_manager_get_core_device calls XIGetClientPointer, which
requires a round-trip to the server. Since we do this on StWidget
creation, this means a full round-trip for every created StWidget.
Replace this with get_device with the ID of the VCP/VCK, since mutter
doesn't support MPX, and we know this is what the device is.
If the sprite is NULL, like if a Wayland app wanted to hide the cursor,
then we need to hide the ClutterTexture on our side, as ClutterTexture
has no easy way to tell it to paint nothing.
If gdk_screen_get_setting fails, like if it's running without XSettings,
then the GValue will have a value of 0. A lot of code tries to divide by
the scale factor. This produces NaN, and combined with the fact that NaN
is "leaky", we very quickly end up spinning out of control.
jsapi.h has some bad warnings with gcc. gjs-module.h already includes

Since we started tracking non-interesting windows, we can no longer
assume that if we manage to find an app associated with the focus window,
it should appear focused - we now can find apps for docks, the DESKTOP
window etc.
To restore the old behavior, make sure that the focus window or one of
its parents is "interesting".

The log handler can be invoked at bad times, and in particular
it can be invoked from gsignal with the signal lock taken.
At that time, calling into arbitrary high-level APIs can
cause a dead-lock.
Instead, only send to telepathy the tp-glib debug messages.
Everything else is in the journal anyway.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=724256
So far we have assumed that whether or not a window is interesting
is static. In general this is the case, but as it is legal for the
underlying properties to change at any time, there are of course
offenders that actually do this (flash I'm looking at ya).
While we used the property to determine whether a window should be
tracked or not, the worst case was showing windows that should be
hidden or missing windows that should be shown.
However as we nowadays base an app's running state on the number of
interesting windows, we need to be more careful in order to avoid
ending up with running apps with no windows.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=723308
The code from shell_window_tracker_is_window_interesting() is equivalent
of MetaWindow's skip-taskbar property, so use it to avoid code duplication.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=723308
With the lastest ShellApp changes, an app is considered stopped
when the last "interesting" window is closed. However the app
may still track non-interesting windows, so if we unref the
running state on the state transition, we hit an assertion later-on
when trying to remove the non-interesting window.
Fix this by keeping the running state around until the last window
is closed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=722840
An app should be considered running if it has at least one "interesting"
window, however the code considers an app running if it has at least
one tracked window. This was fine while we were only tracking interesting
windows, but since commit d21aa0d85f this is no longer the case.
So keep track of the number of interesting windows as well and use that
to determine the running state.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=722690
It is possible to associate an application's window with a different
application using the transient_for hint. However we currently only
consider the hint in get_window_app() and not when making the original
association, which opens the door to some confusing inconsistencies;
for instance, get_window_app() will not necessarily return the same
value for all windows retrieved via shell_app_get_windows().
Fix this by looking at the transient_for hint when making the original
association, not just in get_window_app().

get_secrets_keyring_cb() contained an optimization (copied over from
nm-applet) that avoided a D-Bus round-trip when NetworkManager sent
secrets hints that were not satisified by the user. This code did
not properly handle empty hints though, and proceeded to always
request new secrets whenever empty hints were sent. Remove this
code entirely since the complexity is not worth it (per Jasper).
Second, get_secrets_keyring_cb() was mishandling VPN secrets which
were marked as "always ask". Because the VPN secrets are not GObject
properties because they cannot be pre-defined, they are passed in
a hash table that is a GObject property marked 'secret'. Unfortunately,
that means that the shell agent cannot determine their secret flags.
But since the VPN plugin auth dialogs have much better information
about what's required than the shell agent does, always ask the VPN
auth dialogs to handle the secrets requests after grabbing any that
already exist from the keyring. This is also what nm-applet does.

Filtering out "non-interesting" windows beforehand as we currently do
means that we may get properties that should be based on all windows,

Just track all windows and filter out non-interesting windows manually
in the one place we actually care about the difference.

Sorting actors by the distance in the axis of movement first and against
the axis otherwise means that if we have a situation like:
A F
B
where "F" is the focused actor, and it slightly overlaps with B vertically,
then we'll choose "B" to go left, rather than "A", which is most likely
what the user intended.
This is especially apparent in the overview where slight window size
differences mean we might not get an exact grid shape.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644306
Rather than scanning all apps for searching, use Ryan's new desktop
file index and the glib support APIs for app searching instead of our
own system.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=711631
While unfortunate that we still have to scan all apps with get_all(),
support for this feature will be short-lived, so hopefully we can drop
it in the future as new apps adapt to the desktop file / app ID
recommendations.
For now, simply scan all desktop IDs.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=711631
Systemd-for-the-user-session would also do this, but that's a deeply
invasive change that I may not actually get to this cycle. This
change is tiny and non-invasive, but provides an important benefit:
You can actually reliably tell *which* applications are logging which
messages (assuming they're launched by the shell).
This actually complements a recent change in DBus:
See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68559
which does a similar thing for bus activated apps.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=711626
Rather than create all ShellApps up-front, create them lazily. We really
had no reason to do this before as we were scanning GMenu to get all the
apps, but doing this can remove a need for get_all, which is slow and
memory-hungry.
We want to transition to a system in the future where we have a desktop
file cache. As we no longer differentiate categories or similar, it no
longer makes sense to have app visibility based on categories. Thus,
we no longer need to use gnome-menus to list all apps. The potential
issue here is reloading all desktop files when new files are created,
but this can be dealt with individually.
The "All Applications" view still uses gnome-menus.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698486
Since appDisplay.js makes its own GMenu tree, it's not necessary
anymore. This does mean that searches will show apps in NoDisplay
categories, but that's an obscure enough edge case not to matter.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698486
This does remove support for legacy prefixed app infos with

It's a broken method when it comes to giving us a useful GDesktopAppInfo,
and it's hard to fix libgmenu properly, so simply recreate the app info
using the desktop file ID that libgmenu has.
We want to move away from gnome-menus eventually, so the simple
utility method isn't really worth keeping around. Reimplement it
in the one place that uses it.

Commit 4095a58eb9 introduced a

two like that commit did.
So fix it to make fade effect works again.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708256
The vvalue and hvalue uniforms are only used to decide whether we
should do fade the edges or not based on the fade_edges uniform.
The result does not change accross fragments so there is no reason
to recompute it for every fragment (pixel) so just split the edge
fade into two uniforms and compute the "should we fade the edges"
boolean once for every direction (when setting the uniforms) instead
of for every single fragment twice.
This reduces the number of uniforms as well as the the number of instructions
which are limited on older hardware. It should also be more efficent.

Gdk uses Xwayland, so it only sees the events we forward to X11
clients. Instead, we can use the abstraction API provided by
mutter and get the right value automatically.
Also, we need to use MetaCursorTracker to handle the cursor
visibility too.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707467
We need to call into MetaScreen to set the cursor, but we can't
do that from libst, so add a hook that libgnome-shell can fill,

shell_app_compare() (which is only used as sort function for
shell_app_system_get_running() nowadays) currently takes the
visibility of an app's windows into account, e.g. applications
with visible windows (non-minimized windows on current workspace)
sort earlier than applications without.
This translate traditional window-switcher behavior to applications,
but we stopped sorting by workspace in the app-switcher a while ago,
and with the new auto-minimization behavior of fullscreen windows
it is more confusing than helpful - in fact, since mutter commit
7e61ef09369a we no longer do this for the window list, so it
makes sense to apply the same to application sorting.

In specific cases, GTK+ does not have enough information to set a correct
opaque region, in which the recommended fix is to set your window as
app-paintable. In the tray icon case, the socket window was considered
opaque but GTK+ as it had a solid window background, but it cannot have an
opaque region set, as the plug isn't composited against the socket, but
instead punches through the socket window.

Build gnome-shell for x11, and gnome-shell-wayland for wayland

It's mostly equivalent to "jhbuild run gnome-shell", which is

With StBoxLayout using the Clutter layout manager, it will now respect
actors' expand/align properties. However for the change to be transparent,
we need to support the existing child meta properties as well. Do
this by simply translating them to the corresponding ClutterBoxChild
properties.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=703810
With the BoxLayout containers in St and Mx and the ClutterBoxLayout
manager, we now have three more or less diverged implementations of
the same layout policy.
While removing StBoxLayout entirely in favor of ClutterLayoutManager
would be the fashionable thing to do, there are obvious drawbacks:
- it is the only actor we have that implements the scrollable interface
- it conveniently exposes its spacing property in CSS
- last but not least, it is used all over the place
So do the next best thing and make our implementation use the
Clutter layout manager internally - that way, the change is
transparent to users, while we get to refer most of the tricky
bits to Clutter. win-win!

This will replace the indicator painted on the stage right now.

Commit cfecd063c9 changed the allocation logic to not allocate
scrollbars when the *_visible booleans are false. This breaks the
fade effect as well as the NEVER policy. We do not paint scrollbars
when they are not supposed to be visible, so not allocating them
and thus leaving them in a "needs allocation" state just causes problems.
I am not convinced that it solved any problem to begin with (we don't paint
them anyway).
As the previous condition has basically always been true, just do it
unconditionally.

Chromium (but not google-chrome) has a StartupWMClass in the desktop
file, so we must match the instance part first to have chrome
web apps working.
Also, we must take care of apps without a wm_class or instance at
all.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673657
Some applications (such as most Java apps, as well as Chrome Web apps) ship
with desktop files that have the wrong name, but whose StartupWMClass
field contains the right value. Therefore first check that key, against
both the class and instance part of WM_CLASS, and only use the filename
if nothing else works.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673657
The point of fading the icon is to make the text displayed over the
icon more legible. In RTL layouts, the text is displayed on the left
of the icon, so fading the right-hand-side of the icon doesn't work
well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704583
We don't set :visible on the scrollbars, but use booleans to track

When the St theme is changed, the StThemeContext unrefs all the theme
nodes cached in it's internal hash table, then emits a signal to
notify all theme nodes that the current theme has changed.
The problem is that the first StWidget to catch a theme changed signal
will trigger a "style-changed" signal catched by its children first.
So the theme changed signal can't be processed properly to cleanup
StThemeNodePaintState before recomputing the theme.
This patch adds a weak ref to the StThemeNode in the
StThemeNodePaintState to ensure paint states are properly cleaned up
when the associated StThemeNode is freed.

Commit 318283fc70 optimized box-shadow rendering by not recreating
shadow materials on every allocation change. Other handles cannot
be reused and are updated regularly, however the patch missed the
cached corner materials - while those can be reused, we still need
to ensure that the currently used paint state references them.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=703909
It is the job of layout containers to arrange their children; having
a hidden feature that *also* allows children to be positioned freely
outside the parent's allocation is just odd.
With the last user of the feature gone, kill it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=703808
Currently the box-shadow is rendering is done like this :
The first time we want to render a node that requires a box-shadow, St
creates an cogl offscreen surface of the size of the allocation and
renders the box into this offscreen buffer using modulation on the
alpha channel, this buffer is then blurred according to the CSS
parameters.
The problem with this method is that every time an StWidget is
resized, its box-shadow offscreen buffer has to be resized and
therefore rendered and blurred.
This patches propose an optimization for this use case by rendering
the box-shadow only once but at a size that is independent of the
StWidget's size. Then every time we need to paint this box-shadow, we
just render this offscreen buffer using a 9-slices.
This method only works when the allocation of the widget is bigger
than the minimum shadow size on which we can apply a 9-slices, that is
given my the radius of the corners. If the allocation is smaller than
this minimum size, we then fallback to the fully render/blur the
shadow (like before this patch).

The duality of the Clutter's key focus and mutter's window focus has long been
a problem for us in lots of case, and caused us to create large and complicated
hacks to get around the issue, including GrabHelper's focus grab model.
Instead of doing this, tie basic focus management into the core of gnome-shell,
instead of requiring complex "application-level" management to get it done
right.
Do this by making sure that only one of an actor or window can be focused at
the same time, and apply the appropriate logic to drop one or the other,
reactively.
Modals are considered a special case, as we grab all keyboard events, but at
the X level, the client window still has focus. Make sure to not do any input
synchronization when we have a modal.
At the same time, remove the FOCUSED input mode, as it's no longer necessary.

Currently we simply set the gsettings key when activating an input
source. This obviously introduces a time window, between the event that
activates the switch and when the switch is complete, under which key
events are being delivered to applications and interpreted according
to the previous input source.
The patches in bug 696996 introduce a DBus API in g-s-d that allows us
to know when an input source if effectively active. Using that and
freezing keyboard events in the X server until we hear back from g-s-d
we can ensure that events won't be misinterpreted after an input
source switch.

As with the screen recorder, the magnifier already adds its own
copy of the system cursor, so we should not add it again. Just

The magnifier adds its own copy of the system cursor to apply the

The shadows are currently rendered by painting the actor we want to
apply shadow on, in an offscreen buffer. The problem is that when this
actor has an allocation padding (ie allocation that isn't at 0x0
relatively to its parent), this padding is added within the offscreen
buffer and as a result the shadow rendering is truncated because the
offscreen buffer size is the size of the allocation box, not the
allocation box + padding.
This patch reposition the actor at 0x0 with rendering it by changing
the initial transformation matrix when rendering the actor offscreen.

In most cases, we'll transition between two states on hover / focus.
Instead of recalculating and repainting our resources on state change,
simply cache the last state when we transition.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=697274
The background image, background image shadow and border image are
allocation-indepedent, so we can keep these in the node. Given that these are
are likely cached in the StTextureCache, the slight increase in code complexity
may not be worth caching these textures and materials -- we might be better off
just computing when we need to paint.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=697274
This ensures that two widgets sharing the same theme node won't trample
on each other's prerendered materials if the actors are of different
sizes. This also tries to be very careful to share as much as possible
during a transition.
This has the side effect that if a widget changes state a bunch of times,
we won't cache every state. Since we expect that state changes are
infrequent and that most cases we'll be able to use the texture cache
to do most of the heavy lifting, this cost is much more insignificant
than rendering a number of different actors with the same theme node
and different sizes.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=697274
Since we now share theme nodes between, we shouldn't cache the paint state
across all nodes. As a first step towards putting this in the actor, split
out the state into another structure. Keep it in the theme node for now
so that we don't make too many changes in one commit.
It's possible that some of these pieces of drawing state could be shared
between theme nodes. For the sake of simplicity, assume that none of them
are shared or should be shared. A future commit could identify those that
could be shared and move them back into the theme node.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=697274
We want to put the paint state in the actor rather than in the theme
node, as having two actors with different sizes but the same theme node
is now much less efficient.

The changes from commit b4f5f1e461 and b394d184cc increased the
instructions required for the fade fragment shader. This is over the limit
for some hardware (like intel gen3), which causes the driver to fallback
to software rendering for the shader. The result is that painting a scrollview
that has a fade effect takes around 30 (!!) seconds.
So lets go back to the old effect for 3.8 until we find a solution.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696404
Previously when a client requests that a window should be docked the
shell would reparent the socket window onto the stage's window and
then use ClutterX11TexturePixmap to get a texture to represent the
window. This will not work if Clutter is no longer using the X11
winsys for example if it becomes its own display server. Instead this
patch leaves the socket window as a child of the root window and lets
mutter create a MetaWindow out of it. If Mutter is acting as a display
server then this mechanism will still work via the headless x server.
The ShellGtkEmbed instance now registers for notification of the
‘window-created’ signal of the display so that it can find the
MetaWindow that gets created to represent the socket window. When this
window is found it is prevented from being displayed on the screen by
setting the actor's opacity to 0. An input shape is then set on the
window to prevent it receiving any input.
Instead of being a subclass of ClutterX11TexturePixmap, ShellGtkEmbed
is now a subclass of ClutterClone. When the MetaWindow is found for
the socket window the clone's source is set to the invisible actor for
the window so it can be displayed in the panel as before.
The ShellEmbeddedWindow no longer needs to know what the stage is
because it no longer reparents the socket window. Therefore the
ShellTrayManager doesn't need to know the stage either so
shell_tray_manager_manage_stage has been replaced with just
shell_tray_manager_manage_screen.

Instead of directly using symbols from GLX to check for the swap event

It appears to be somewhat common for st_widget_style_changed() to be

we cache theme nodes, we're likely to get the same theme node back from

If you copy a theme node's paint state into itself, it should be an
inexpensive no-op. What actually happened was that we destroyed the
old paint state, re-initialized to blank, then copied the blank state
back into itself. In the process, we lost (for instance) the textures
for rounded corners.
Until I introduced the texture cache, this never actually happened,
because when st_widget_recompute_style() calls st_widget_get_theme_node(),
we'd always get a fresh theme node. Now, we get a theme node T back
from the cache, notice that paint_equal(T, T) is true, short-circuit
slightly by copying its drawing state into itself, and destroy drawing
state that we still needed.
I'm going to fix this in recompute_style() too, but as a general
principle, self-assignment ought to be harmless.

get its original StThemeNode back again when it returns to the old

The screen grabber was a workaround for an extremely slow path in Mesa
when reading back pixel data from the frame buffer. It was using pixel
buffer objects by directly calling into GL to hit a fast blit path in
Intel's driver. This should no longer be necessary with the latest
Mesa because the normal read pixels path now has a fast path to just
memcpy the data. Using PBOs in that case just adds an extra
indirection because the data is read into an intermediate buffer and
then copied back out again.
We want to be able to remove the dependency on linking against libGL

out of the GSM and CDMA specific classes, and new unit tests for them are
implemented. Tests can be run manually with:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687356.
Rather than using a complicated set of function calls across
library boundaries and our own scanning logic, use strtok(),
which glibc already provides, and is probably much more optimized.

The libedataserverui dependency is a relic of the old E-D-S API.
As of 3.6.0, E-D-S now centralizes authentication prompts so clients
don't have to display their own. This also allows trading the GTK+
main loop for a plain GMainLoop in gnome-shell-calendar-server.c.

Often the first thing a user wants to do after making a recording
is post it somewhere.
This commit adds the video to recently used items, so that it shows
up prominently in open file choosers.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680647
Recording continues for some time after the recorder object
is closed, since closing isn't a synchronous operation.
This commit defers quiting the test-recorder application until
the recording is finished.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680647
We want to make sure the recorder isn't finalized until the
saved recording hits disk. This means the pipeline object needs
a hard reference on the recorder.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680647
The stage is a floating object. We don't own a reference
to it, so we shouldn't unref it.
This commit removes the erroneous unref call and makes sure
we call clutter_actor_destroy on the stage when we're done
with it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680647
While looking at how the plymouth implementation was built, I was so
short-sighted and focused on the string "_XROOTPMAP_ID" that I didn't
realize it was the name of the standard background on the root window.
Remove our own implementation, and switch to using a standard mutter
MetaBackgroundActor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=682428
Currently we miss changes to a file referenced in background-image
or border-image.
Connect to the StTextureCache::texture-file-changed signal to keep
up with file changes and update the drawing state if necessary.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679268
For textures loaded from files, the cache might hide image changes
by keeping the data of a previous version around indefinitely. For
instance AccountsService will notify of avatar changes, but as new
image is copied over the old one, we will continue to use the old
image data.
Install a file monitor for each file resource we load and clear
the corresponding data from the cache on changes, emitting the
new StTextureCache::texture-file-changed signal.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679268
ClutterText will only queue a relayout after font changes if it has
any contents other than the empty string. As a result, its height
request may change after the first character has been entered. To
avoid this visual glitch, force a relayout on actual font changes.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=685534
The actor's GtkIMContext is freed in dispose and reset in unrealize - as
ClutterActor's dispose will unrealize the actor if necessary, chaining
up to the parent after clearing the im context will result in warnings
if the actor is still realized, so chain up first.

The application menu is currently unusable with non-maximized
windows when using focus-follows-mouse mode. Override mutter's
focus-change-on-pointer-rest preference, so that the actual
focus change is delayed until the pointer stops moving.

The signals for the action group were being disconnected when the action
group was explicitly removed from the GActionMuxer but the same was not
being done when it was finalized.
This means that a change in the state of an action group that used to be
associated with a finalized GActionMuxer would result in a crash. This
would happen for stateful application actions after closing a window.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=681399
For performance reasons, resources required to paint a widget are
aggressively cached; we know of at least one case where our caching
prevents updating the used background-image correctly, so add explicit
API to clear all associated cache data.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679268
StThemeNode caches its resources aggressively to keep the required
work on paint to a minimum - right now, resources are only recreated
on allocation changes.
In order to update the background-image property correctly when the
underlying file changes, resources need to be recreated without a
size change, so add an explicit method for that.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679268
The current API assumes that image data loaded from files remains
valid during the life time of the shell. This assumption is mostly
valid for image files we provide ourselves (with the exception being
designers working on those files), but not necessarily for "external"
files - provide API to explicitly remove cached data associated with
a URI for those cases.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679268
The screenshield requires gdm 3.5, which can be problematic in
jhbuild configurations, or distributions that don't use GDM as the display
manager. Allow transparent fallback to gnome-screensaver in that case.

The speed and quality properties have been removed in favor of properties
closer to the upstream library.
Removing the properies from the pipeline would result into a huge
slowdown so we have to map the old values to the new ones.
According to the source code of the old vp8enc element quality maps to
(int)(63 - quality * 6.2) for min_quantizer and max_quantizer, while
speed maps to cpu-used = speed == 0 ? 0 : (speed - 1).
So set min_quantizer and min_quantizer to 13, and cpu-used to 5 based on
the above formulas.

When using an input method like IBus, the IM is expected to process
key events before anything else. Currently this doesn't always work
as expected, as the event filtering is done in the default handlers
of the key-press and key-release events, e.g. only after other
handlers have been run.
To allow the IM to filter events earlier, move the code to a
captured-event handler instead.

st_texture_cache_load_from_raw() enforces a square ClutterTexture,

data has a different width:height ratio.
Add padding in those cases as we already do when loading from pixbufs.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683483
Clutter will try to unmap during a dispose if we have a parent, so if we

chain up.

The original design for the overview had buttons for searching for

If the user is already active when the notification pops up, we
won't get an idle watcher because there's no transition from
active to idle or vice versa. Correct this by initializing the
state correctly from XSync.
StScrollBar was intercepting motion events by using captured-event on
the stage, which required additional dirty tricks, which required
additional hacks. Simplify it by just using clutter_grab_pointer()
instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=671001

To allow more than one summary icon actor for a source we split
the model of the source icon (which is iconName, if the default

createNotificationIcon() with a generic createIcon(size). Also,
the actual source actor is split into a separate class, that handles
the notification counter automatically.

The :reactive property is used on StButton to like the :sensitive

While modal dialogs were attached to the parent's titlebar, it
made sense to leave the top of the parent window at full color.
With the new position of modal dialogs, it makes more sense to dim

BrightnessContrast- and DesaturateEffect instead of our own custom
shader.

When running with Valgrind, this helps us ensure that we're managing

hopefully last us for now.

The dependency chain spirals out from folks->zeitgeist->xapian...and
I'm really not interested in pulling in all of that into the core
shell.
There is work on splitting out contact search into gnome-contacts; I'd
add a bug link but Bugzilla is down.
Currently we assume that GTK_UNIQUE_BUS_NAME is shared between all

applications that specify G_APPLICATION_NON_UNIQUE, so make sure
to update the menu as necessary.

There is a race if a channel is invalidated during its preparation: the
'invalidated' signal is already emitted so the Shell will never notice.
We fix this by simply checking if the channel is already invalidated when
receiving it from telepathy-glib.
In the approving case, we reject the full ChannelDispatchOperation as we only
support approving one channel at the time.

We explicitly include NoDisplay applications in the ShellAppSystem because
we want app tracking for them, but we explicitly filter NoDisplay applications
out when showing them to the user because we don't want to show them to the
user. We also based our "All" apps view on a flattened list of apps. While
we did check for NoDisplay on the app item itself, we didn't check against
its parents. Refactor the app display view to not use a separate flat list
of applications, but instead a concatenation of all the applications in all
the loaded categories.

ShellApp keeps track of windows sorted by most recently used first

Depending on the exact linker options and versions, rpath's written
into the binary may, or may not, be honored by dlopen(). Work around
this by simply linking the gnome-shell binary to gnome-shell-js, since
then dlopen() doesn't need to search paths.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=670477
It doesn't make sense to have multiple requests for the same
connection/setting combination at the same time, since we would be
asking the user twice for the same password. Instead, report cancellation
to NetworkManager if this happens.
Note that does make sense to have multiple requests in sequence though
(they could have different flags), but this is not affected.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=674961
Lots of things here were unused. First, we don't need to calculate
the js_dir when not running from the source tree, which makes the
branch mostly empty, meaning we can merge the two branches.
This allows us running uninstalled. While we're at it, though, remove
JHBUILD_TYPELIBDIR. jhbuild shell should add its own stuff to GI_TYPELIB_PATH,
and we don't want to half reimplement jhbuild. The wrapper script should be
solely for the case of running from the source directory, and not care about
jhbuild at all.
If start_shell throws an exception for whatever reason, the finally
handler will run before shell has been set, leading to a "referencing
an undefined local variable" error.
If a request isn't found in shell_network_agent_set_password() or
shell_network_agent_respond(), then g_return_if_fail() rather than
crashing. OTOH, if a request is not found in
shell_network_agent_cancel_get_secrets(), then just ignore it
silently, since that could legitimately happen.

Right now, we are hard-depending on the presence of Evolution by
using its settings schemas. This is likely to be unpopular, and
also causes instability if someone happens not to have Evolution
installed, so install a schema that has the same data path as
the Evolution schema, but a different name and install that
for the keys we need.
To avoid a string-freeze break, we rely on the translations in
Evolution - if Evolution isn't installed, the key descriptions
will be untranslated in dconf-editor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=674424
This swaps a use of GLfloat for a regular float. Cogl might stop
including a GL header in its public headers soon so this would fix a
compilation error.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672711
If run under jhbuild, gnome-shell is in PATH, so trying to restore
is just running it again, likely failing in the same way (with the
additional problem of detaching the shell from the terminal). Also,
this is using deprecated GConf keys, and deprecated pygobject
bindings.
The jhbuild wrapper is expected to be run through jhbuild run, or
in the uninstalled case inside a jhbuild shell, so there should
be no need to set XDG_DATA_DIRS and friends.
dconf-daemon is available since 2.32, so there is no need to
start it manually (and in fact, it should not be running normally).
Similarly, notify-osd and notification-daemon should not be
dbus activated, but rather autostarted by gnome-session, and
therefore not running in a gnome-shell session.
Introduce a new gnome-shell-perf-tool, which can be used instead
of the old gnome-shell-jhbuild wrapper to gather data about gnome-shell
performance and submit to shell-perf.gnome.org. This runs the
shell with no extra setup beyond the WM_CLASS filter, so it can
be used for a jhbuild setup or for an installed shell.
Currently the scroll event code only handles scroll events if the
adjustment's value is within the "lower" and "upper" limits. The
likely intent was to pass events to a parent scroll view when
reaching the bounds (uh, nested scroll views!), but apparently
we never made use of this, as the upper bound is actually wrong
(an adjustment's maximum value is upper - page_size, not upper).
Just handle all scroll events unconditionally and rely on the
bound checks in StAdjustment.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672413
Evolution now stores its selected calendars and tasks in GSettings, not
in GConf. If we don't look at the new location, then we'll not pick up
newly added and enabled calendars, making the calendar effectively not
work for new installs.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673610
If evolution-data-server needs to prompt for a password, it will try
to pop up a GTK+ dialog. When GTK+ is not initialized, the result is
a crash. So, initialize GTK+ and run a main loop.
See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=809681
The result is ugly since we have a Gnome-shell-calendar-server fallback
application, but I don't think it's worth installing a desktop file
and having a string break, since this is pretty uncommon (only for
manually added calendars without the password stored in gnome-keyring),
and apparently this is being rewritten for 3.5 to have the dialogs come
the e-d-s daemon rather than from the individual application.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673608
gnome-shell-extension-prefs uses format(), but can't pull in Shell

instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673106
Icon theme change signals aren't noticed immediately, they're usually
noticed when trying to load an icon. Since icon theme changes cause a
style change, and most icon widgets try to re-load their texture during
a style change, this means that we get a stack like this:
st_texture_cache_load_icon
gtk_icon_theme_lookup_icon
gtk_icon_theme_changed
st_widget_style_changed
st_texture_cache_load_icon
Rather than making every place that uses StTextureCache re-entrant,
punt the notifying of icon theme changes to an idle handler instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673512
We've been dangling on the edge of unsafety, unnoticed, for a little while
about the reference count safety of ShellScreenshot. GJS owns the entire
reference count, so as soon as it goes out of scope it could die, causing
GJS to try and fetch the corresponding wrapper object for a stale pointer.
We haven't seen any crashes because of luck -- SpiderMonkey tries to group
together deallocations to limit GC pauses, and there isn't really a lot
of GC pressure in the duration that a screenshot happens, so we tend to
be mostly stable. But in the case that you create a lot of objects while
a screenshot is going on, by hammering the "Print Screen" button, for
example, you can destroy the GObject before the callback finishes.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672775

More than one outstanding request to the same URI should now be

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672273
In the case that we don't have an icon corresponding to the gicon, it's
more than likely that the code calling load_gicon will know more about
what it wants as a fallback than the texture-cache itself. In fact -
we had a whole lot of dead code that would try to fall back, but never
did because we always returned a valid actor.
This was causing certain applications with invalid icons to not get the
fallback icon because an icon couldn't be found. Fix up the one place
where we don't have an explicit fallback icon codepath, and then stop
doing what we were doing.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=671656
This assignment was shadowed by the giant switch above. Since the
switch has a comment or two explaining the logic inside of it,
keep that instead of the assignment.
Since the invoker for navigate_focus has an extra parameter, annotations
from the invoker aren't applied on the vfunc itself. Fix that by annotating
the vfunc separately.
In the workspace-collecting code we add a check to avoid collecting a
workspace if any startup sequence is running there. Since the sequence
can take some time to load, an helper function is also added which keeps
the (empty) workspace around for a very short time, while waiting for the
sequence to start.

If the user was inactive while a notification was shown, we show the summary

new notifications.

This allows us to do directional keyboard navigation when there's no
actor inside the horizontal or vertical strip extending from the
origin actor but there are other actors to the sides of that strip
that could still be used as targets even if that means the focus would
move diagonally.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=663901
For arrow keys navigation, when moving from a widget which isn't a
descendant of the widget we are going to, it's unexpected that focus
moves to the target's first descendant instead of the closest to the
source widget.
This requires us to use absolute coordinates to compare widgets since
we no longer have the guarantee that the widgets we are comparing are
siblings.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=663901
Our DBus API (and mostly every other API in existence) define an

The very similar clutter_actor_allocate_align_fill is close enough
that this is just needless duplication. Additionally, allocate_fill

Now that StWidget is a group of sorts, it needs to account for its children
in its paint volume. Unfortunately, this causes havoc for StBoxLayout, so it
needs fixing - it's unknown why it worked when chaining up to near-identical
code in StContainer.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=670034
The get_focus_chain() implementation in StWidget just returns all
children, it should filter for visible children instead. This
breaks keyboard navigation in various places since commit 72dad591
removed the correct implementation in StContainer.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=670904
Now that ClutterActor has a ClutterContainer implementation, we
can start removing StContainer. To help make this a bit more
understandable, instead of converting everything at once, make
StContainer a compatible API wrapper around the ClutterActor
implementation, and then we'll remove those wrappers in later

Since an StWidget now has children, it needs to allocate those children
properly. Defer to the currently installed layout manager, like Clutter
does.
Now that we have something that allocates children in St, to prevent
double allocations, we use clutter_actor_set_allocation rather than
chaining up to StWidget::allocate.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=670034
Now that StWidget is concrete and instantiable, we need to do something
other than return an adjusted 0 for width and height. Just chain up
to ClutterActor's default implementation, which uses the layout manager.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=670034
Since we want to paint children by default in StWidget, we need to
provide a way for custom subclasses to paint their CSS backgrounds
without painting children... introducing st_widget_paint_background.
Additionally, remove any custom paint/pick handlers added by subclasses
of StWidget that just painted their children. This will cause double
painting if left alone.
This also removes the hacky things that some subclasses of StBin did
to prevent their one child to be painted by StBin.

Clutter now provides two new properties on ClutterActor - first-child
and last-child, so we have notifiers on when they change. Unfortunately,
it still doesn't help us too much - we need to keep track of the previous
values of the properties so we can remove their pseudoclasses.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=670034
We can't get rid of the implementations in StContainer just yet,
as StContainer still keeps its own child list. But this should
lower the amount of code that has to be moved around when we
remove StContainer.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=670034
clutter_container_foreach is deprecated, so let's replace that
with some ClutterActorIter usage. Additionally, remove the checks
for ClutterContainer, as all ClutterActors are now ClutterContainers.

Although not all "Finding and reminding" applications are ready
yet, the integration with gnome-documents' search results overlaps
enough with the "Recent Items" provider to justify its removal.

Empathy uses to support 2 D-Bus API for calls:
- StreamedMedia: legacy API
- Call.DRAFT: experimental version of the new API
Since 3.3.90, Empathy only supports Call1, the first stable version of the new
API, so the Shell should do the same.

The function may return FALSE without setting the GError, so don't
assume it is set to prevent a crash in that case. While at it, free
the GError we were leaking before.

The handle was a child of the trough, but it was allocated and painted
like it was a child of the bar. This will wreak havoc when we port over
to the new Clutter API, so let's just make it a child of the bar.

When the operation is cancelled by NetworkManager, the request is
cancelled immediately. Later when gnome-keyring invokes the callback
notifying the error we must therefore not access its memory.
Previously the callback would mistakenly treat "cancelled" (which
indicates a programmatic cancel) as "denied" (which means the user
clicked "Cancel" on the keyring prompt)

VPN secrets are stored by the plugins, that provide separate
helpers for authentication. This commit adds the support for invoking
the binaries and pass them connection details.
For plugins that support it (as exposed by their keyfile), we invoke
them in "external-ui-mode" and expect a set of metadata about the
secrets which is used to build a shell styled dialog.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=658484
ConsoleKit is being obsoleted by systemd. Accordingly port the CK logic
in the gnome-shell automount manager to systemd-logind APIs.
This makes use of systemd-logind's native C APIs which are much easier
to use than the D-Bus APIs in this case, and much faster too (since they
are synchronous and directly query the kernel for the information we
need). The dependency is compile time optional, and in order to be nice
to the Debian folks g-s compiled with this enabled fill automatically
fall back to CK support on systems lacking systemd.
A new tool, 'gnome-shell-extension-prefs' can load a new entry point from
extensions, 'prefs.js', which has an entry point to return a GTK+ widget.
This allows extensions to have their own preferences dialog, without each
extension needing to ship its own Python script and .desktop file.

Clutter, since version 1.8, does The Right Thing™ inside the default
implementation of ClutterActor::map and ClutterActor::unmap, even for
non-container actors: it will iterate over the list of children and
map, or unmap, each one of them, respectively.
This means that the requirement to override map and unmap for composite
actors to map and unmap the internal children has been dropped.

Since our implementation of background-size is now CSS-compliant, we
do not need this subtexture hack that clips a "leak". The comment here
is also incorrect.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=633462
It seems that accidentally, two variables were swapped in one code path
of the background-size implementation, causing interesting but wrong
images for some elements.

Recent mutter changes made MetaShapedTexture not a ClutterTexture,
but instead a special ClutterActor subclass that implemented the texture-y
bits itself. Use recently introduced API in MetaShapedTexture so that we can
get the raw texture data and spit it out as a PNG.
Use the new meta_shaped_texture_get_image() to get a window's texture data.
meta_shaped_texture_get_image() flattens the image against any mask it may
have, so a screenshot of it should look exactly as it does on the display.

Instead of adding every rendered frame into the recording, drop frames
and only buffer and record enough frames to match the target framerate.
Increase the default frame rate from 15 to 30, since now that we're
actually enforcing framerate, it's noticeable that 15fps is not smooth.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=669066
The default pipeline was fairly aggressive about quality, and could
be too expensive for some computers. Decrease the quality setting for
the vp8 codec from 10 to 8, and increase the speed setting from 2 to 6.
(Basically, quality affects the visual fidelity of the end result, while
speed affects how much CPU the encoder uses to get a high compression
ratio at that quality level.)
Remove videorate from the pipeline, since the GStreamer VP8 encoder can
handle variable-framerate streams. This means that we won't spend CPU
encoding duplicate frames added by videorate.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=669066
We need to indicate that our GStreamer source produces timestamped
frames, instead of the default, which is to produce a stream of bytes.
This is needed for correctness, and to avoid warnings for some
pipelines.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=669066
For the Intel drivers, using glReadPixels() to read into client-memory
directly from the frame buffer is much slower than creating a pixel
buffer, copying into that, and then mapping that for reading. On other
drivers, the two approaches are likely to be similar in speed. Create
a ShellScreenGrabber abstraction that uses pixel buffers if available.
Use that for screenshots and screen recording.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=669065
Use the correct clip offsets when taking the screenshot of a window, to
exclude possible invisible borders and to include the case where the
window doesn't have any frame itself.
.desktop files have been designed for browsing, so the existing
fields often produce insufficient results when used for search.
gnome-control-center used X-GNOME-Keywords for that purpose, which
has now been standardized as Keywords. It makes sense for us to
support it in gnome-shell as well (and encourage its use outside
of settings panels).

It seems that Debian has their own prefixes in something like
debian-xterm.desktop. To properly do application matching in these cases,
we need to strip the debian- prefix.

Writting the screenshot to a file can take a relativly long time
in which we block the compositor, so do that part in a separate
thread to avoid the hang.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=652952
A new texture has undefined contents - when we're creating a shadow,
we need to clear the contents of the texture before drawing the border
and background into it.

g_dbus_method_invocation_return_value() adopts a floating reference,
so we don't also need to unreference it; fix by replacing the code
using a more compact form using the ^ convenience character in
GVariant type specifications. (Thanks to Ryan Lortie for the
suggestion.)

According to the GIO docs, sections can have labels too. We support
them by inserting a non reactive menu item at the beginning of the
section. This item is specially flagged to be ignored while processing
changed signals from the model (since it does not correspond to any
model item)

shell_embedded_window_hide() can be called during widget destruction,
after the associated ClutterActor has been already cleared out.
Fix a crash in that case.

The application proxy is created asynchrously after the dbus name
is registed. This means that when tracking the first window (and
therefore creating the first window GActionGroup) there is no
app proxy yet.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=633028
Implement the background-size CSS property, specified by the CSS
Backgrounds and Borders Module Level 3, including the keywords
"contain", "cover", and fixed-size backgrounds.

It's not guaranteed that the application DBus proxy appears before
we receive the first focus event from the toplevel window.
Ensure that the first method to access the action muxer creates it if
hasn't been created yet.
We now have GRemoteActionGroup interface with the needed API,
implemented by GDBusActionGroup.
With the new API we could theoretically turn GActionMuxer itself into a
GRemoteActionGroup and expose the _full API to the shell so that the
timestamps could be passed from there.
Pass the current timestamp as platform data when activating
an action. This is implemented slightly hacky, since we use
clutter_get_current_event_time() to get at the timestamp, but
the alternative is to expose g_action_muxer_activate_action_full
to js, which would be quite a bit more involved.
GTK+ also exports window-specific actions, by putting the object path
for the exported action group in the _DBUS_OBJECT_PATH X property.
We add this action group to the app's muxer with a 'win' prefix,
since that is what the exported menu expects. Whenever the focus
window changes, we update the window-specific actions of its
application, and emit notify::action-group to cause the app
menu to be updated.
GDBusActionGroup api has changed again, adapt to that.
Also, use a GActionMuxer to add the 'app.' prefix to actions,
instead of manually stripping it out of the action names.
In the future, the muxer will also contain per-window actions
with a 'win.' prefix.
GMenuProxy has been replaced by GDBusMenuModel, and the object path
has been moved (now needs to be retrieved from the AppMenu GApplication
property).
Update the test to prefix each action with "app." as documented,
and use a GtkApplicationWindow instead of a plain GtkWindow.
Use the new GApplication support in ShellApp to create the application
menu. Supports plain (no state), boolean and double actions.
Includes a test application (as no other application uses GApplication
for actions)

GDBusActionGroup and GMenuProxy are new objects in GIO 2.32 that
help with accessing menus and actions of remote applications.
This patch makes it possible for the shell to associate an
application with a dbus name and from that a GMenu, that will
be shown as the application menu.

grid_width and grid_height were inverted, which caused a crash

Not all desktop files tracked by the shell have
Exec lines. This could be because they're actually
run by another process, for instance, and the desktop
file is merely there to provide metadata. For example,
nautilus-pastebin provides a desktop file without an
Exec line.
The shell currently crashes if one of these partial
desktop files is installed and the user attempts to
search from the overview.
commit 37726a4cb6 fixed
a similar crasher.
This commit fixes the next one lower in the code.

Instead of saving the last_used_time per-app, grab the maximum time for all
windows. The logic is less hard to keep track of, and it solves some edge
case issues where windows that no longer exist update the user time, even
if none of the other windows have been used recently.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=660650
Allow push_modal to optionally only work with a keyboard only grab and
use that in altTab as a fallback to allow switching windows while a pointer grab
is in effect (like during DND operations).

For some reason, the texture cache decides to make a request and then look up
an icon in the icon theme. If it's valid, it just returns, fine, but if it
doesn't add the icon, it tries to undo the request, leaking an
AsyncTextureLoadData that isn't freed in the process.

Rather than have five or six structs allocated duplicating data,
just keep one and simplify the code considerably.
Again, part of my ongoing quest to merge St and Mx.

shell_global_get_memory_info tries to zero initialize the output
parameter with memset, but it passes the wrong size (because of
a missing *). There's no reason to do the memset, though. In the
normal case all members of the struct gets initialized before the
function returns anyway.
This commit drops the memset call in favor of one explicit 0 assignment
that only gets executed on on atypical platforms.

Without the desktop, even Nautilus hardcodes "Home" in all places
nowadays (except for the desktop itself). I think a run-time dependency
on nautilus being installed (GSettings will abort if the schema is not
found) is not worth it to keep compatibility with the desktop.
(Also, nautilus itself could probably hardcode "Home" for the desktop as
well and remove the preference).

If we add a 0-sized actor with a border-radius, we will crash as we try to
allocate a 0-sized texture in Cogl. Bail out early instead of doing that.

We originally OR'ed search terms and favored results which matched
multiple times to get more relevant results. When changing search
to AND search terms, the semantics of "multiple matches" were
changed to refer to a single term matching multiple criteria (name,
executable), which seemed like a good idea at the time.
However in practice this just results in applications whose
user-visible name matches the executable name on disk being
favored over applications using a more generic name, which
isn't too useful (in particular when taking usage frequency
into account).
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=623372
Currently we use a very strict definition of "prefix", where the
search term has to match at the very beginning of the searched
criteria (application name, executable name). Use a more liberal
definition by including matches where the preceding character is
a space (application name) or hyphen (executable name) as well;
as many applications use a prefix, this should improve the quality
of results.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=623372
Application search results are internally categorized in four sets,
multiple and single prefix matches and multiple and single substring
matches. Each set is currently sorted alphabetically by application
name when concatenating the sets to the final result.
Change the last step to sort each set by usage frequency instead,
which is more likely to favor the most relevant match than
"arbitrary" alphabetic order.
