ad9db72f74 Expose COGL_FEATURE_ID_BUFFER_AGE feature id
This adds a new COGL_FEATURE_ID_BUFFER_AGE feature id that can be used
to determine if cogl_onscreen_get_buffer_age() will ever return an age
other than 0. This should be used instead of querying the winsys feature
via cogl_clutter_winsys_has_feature().

a0441778ad This re-licenses Cogl 1.18 under the MIT license
Since the Cogl 1.18 branch is actively maintained in parallel with the
master branch; this is a counter part to commit 1b83ef938fc16b which
re-licensed the master branch to use the MIT license.

This re-licensing is a follow up to the proposal that was sent to the
Cogl mailing list:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/cogl/2013-December/001465.html

Note: there was a copyright assignment policy in place for Clutter (and
therefore Cogl which was part of Clutter at the time) until the 11th of
June 2010 and so we only checked the details after that point (commit
0bbf50f905)

For each file, authors were identified via this Git command:
$ git blame -p -C -C -C20 -M -M10  0bbf50f905..HEAD

We received blanket approvals for re-licensing all Red Hat and Collabora
contributions which reduced how many people needed to be contacted
individually:
- http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/cogl/2014-January/001536.html

Individual approval requests were sent to all the other identified authors
who all confirmed the re-license on the Cogl mailinglist:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/cogl/2014-January

As well as updating the copyright header in all sources files, the
COPYING file has been updated to reflect the license change and also
document the other licenses used in Cogl such as the SGI Free Software
License B, version 2.0 and the 3-clause BSD license.

This patch was not simply cherry-picked from master; but the same
methodology was used to check the source files.

eb7ef457cb Add support for RG textures
This adds COGL_PIXEL_FORMAT_RG_88 and COGL_TEXTURE_COMPONENTS_RG in
order to support two-component textures. The RG components for a
texture is only supported if COGL_FEATURE_ID_TEXTURE_RG is advertised.
This is only available on GL 3, GL 2 with the GL_ARB_texture_rg
extension or GLES with the GL_EXT_texture_rg extension. The RG pixel
format is always supported for images because Cogl can easily do the
conversion if an application uses this format to upload to a texture
with a different format.

If an application tries to create an RG texture when the feature isn't
supported then it will raise an error when the texture is allocated.

6d51a18e7c Add support for per-vertex point sizes
This adds a new function to enable per-vertex point size on a
pipeline. This can be set with
cogl_pipeline_set_per_vertex_point_size(). Once enabled the point size
can be set either by drawing with an attribute named
'cogl_point_size_in' or by writing to the 'cogl_point_size_out'
builtin from a snippet.

There is a feature flag which must be checked for before using
per-vertex point sizes. This will only be set on GL >= 2.0 or on GLES
2.0. GL will only let you set a per-vertex point size from GLSL by
writing to gl_PointSize. This is only available in GL2 and not in the
older GLSL extensions.

The per-vertex point size has its own pipeline state flag so that it
can be part of the state that affects vertex shader generation.

Having to enable the per vertex point size with a separate function is
a bit awkward. Ideally it would work like the color attribute where
you can just set it for every vertex in your primitive with
cogl_pipeline_set_color or set it per-vertex by just using the
attribute. This is harder to get working with the point size because
we need to generate a different vertex shader depending on what
attributes are bound. I think if we wanted to make this work
transparently we would still want to internally have a pipeline
property describing whether the shader was generated with per-vertex
support so that it would work with the shader cache correctly.
Potentially we could make the per-vertex property internal and
automatically make a weak pipeline whenever the attribute is bound.
However we would then also need to automatically detect when an
application is writing to cogl_point_size_out from a snippet.

ed90c6fed9 Move event polling into CoglRenderer
This updates the cogl_poll_ apis to allow dispatching events before we
have a CoglContext and to also enables pollfd state to be changed in a
more add-hoc way by different Cogl components by replacing the
winsys->get_poll_info with _cogl_poll_renderer_add/remove_fd functions
and a winsys->get_dispatch_timeout vfunc.

One of the intentions here is that applications should be able to run
their mainloop before creating a CoglContext to potentially get events
relating to CoglOutputs.

24733abf68 onscreen: Add CoglFrameInfo and _add_frame_callback() api
Add a CoglFrameInfo object that tracks timing information for frames
that are drawn. We track a frame counter and frame timing information
for each CoglOnscreen. Internally a CoglFrameInfo is automatically
created for each frame, delimited by cogl_onscreen_swap_buffers() or
cogl_onscreen_swap_region() calls.

CoglFrameInfos are delivered to applications via frame event callbacks
that can be registered with a new cogl_onscreen_add_frame_callback()
api. Two initial event types (dispatched on all platforms) have been
defined; a _SYNC event used for throttling the frame rate of
applications and a _COMPLETE event used so signify the end of a frame.

Note: This new _add_frame_callback() api makes the
cogl_onscreen_add_swap_complete_callback() api redundant and so it
should be considered deprecated. Since the _add_swap_complete_callback()
api is still experimental api, we will be looking to quickly migrate
users to the new api so we can remove the old api.

4f6fe6f0e2 Fixes for --disable-glib
This fixes some problems which were stopping --disable-glib from
working properly:

• A lot of the public headers were including glib.h. This shouldn't be
necessary because the API doesn't expose any glib types. Otherwise
any apps would require glib in order to get the header.

• The public headers were using G_BEGIN_DECLS. There is now a
replacement macro called COGL_BEGIN_DECLS which is defined in
  cogl-types.h.

• A similar fix has been done for G_GNUC_NULL_TERMINATED and
  G_GNUC_DEPRECATED.

• The CFLAGS were not including $(builddir)/deps/glib which was
preventing it finding the generated glibconfig.h when building out
  of tree.

df21e20f65 Adds CoglError api
Although we use GLib internally in Cogl we would rather not leak GLib
api through Cogl's own api, except through explicitly namespaced
cogl_glib_ / cogl_gtype_ feature apis.

One of the benefits we see to not leaking GLib through Cogl's public API
is that documentation for Cogl won't need to first introduce the Glib
API to newcomers, thus hopefully lowering the barrier to learning Cogl.

This patch provides a Cogl specific typedef for reporting runtime errors
which by no coincidence matches the typedef for GError exactly. If Cogl
is built with --enable-glib (default) then developers can even safely
assume that a CoglError is a GError under the hood.

This patch also enforces a consistent policy for when NULL is passed as
an error argument and an error is thrown. In this case we log the error
and abort the application, instead of silently ignoring it. In common
cases where nothing has been implemented to handle a particular error
and/or where applications are just printing the error and aborting
themselves then this saves some typing. This also seems more consistent
with language based exceptions which usually cause a program to abort if
they are not explicitly caught (which passing a non-NULL error signifies
in this case)

Since this policy for NULL error pointers is stricter than the standard
GError convention, there is a clear note in the documentation to warn
developers that are used to using the GError api.

Note: Since we can't change the Cogl 1.x api the patch was changed to
not rename _error_quark() functions to be _error_domain() functions and
although it's a bit ugly, instead of providing our own CoglError type
that's compatible with GError we simply #define CoglError to GError
unless Cogl is built with glib disabled.

Note: this patch does technically introduce an API break since it drops
the cogl_error_get_type() symbol generated by glib-mkenum (Since the
CoglError enum was replaced by a CoglSystemError enum) but for now we
are assuming that this will not affect anyone currently using the Cogl
API. If this does turn out to be a problem in practice then we would be
able to fix this my manually copying an implementation of
cogl_error_get_type() generated by glib-mkenum into a compatibility
source file and we could also define the original COGL_ERROR_ enums for
compatibility too.

Note: another minor concern with cherry-picking this patch to the 1.14
branch is that an api scanner would be lead to believe that some APIs
have changed, and for example the gobject-introspection parser which
understands the semantics of GError will not understand the semantics of
CoglError. We expect most people that have tried to use
gobject-introspection with Cogl already understand though that it is not
well suited to generating bindings of the Cogl api anyway and we aren't
aware or anyone depending on such bindings for apis involving GErrors.
(GnomeShell only makes very-very minimal use of Cogl via the gjs
bindings for the cogl_rectangle and cogl_color apis.)

The main reason we have cherry-picked this patch to the 1.14 branch
even given the above concerns is that without it it would become very
awkward for us to cherry-pick other beneficial patches from master.

87bc616d34 framebuffer: Support texture based depth buffers
This commit introduces some new framebuffer api to be able to
enable texture based depth buffers for a framebuffer (currently
only supported for offscreen framebuffers) and once allocated
to be able to retrieve the depth buffer as a texture for further
usage, say, to implement shadow mapping.

The API works as follow:
  * Before the framebuffer is allocated, you can request that a depth
    texture is created with
    cogl_framebuffer_set_depth_texture_enabled()
  * cogl_framebuffer_get_depth_texture() can then be used to grab a
CoglTexture once the framebuffer has been allocated.

ea3d8eca91 Don't take internal references on the context
We want applications to fully control the lifetime of a CoglContext
without having to worry that internal resources (such as the default
2d,3d and rectangle textures, or any caches we maintain) could result in
circular references that keep the context alive. We also want to avoid
making CoglContext into a special kind of object that isn't ref-counted
or that can't be used with object apis such as
cogl_object_set_user_data. Being able to reliably destroy the context is
important on platforms such as Android where you may be required
bring-up and tear-down a CoglContext numerous times throughout the
applications lifetime. A dissadvantage of this policy is that it is now
possible to leave other object such as framebuffers in an inconsistent
state if the context is unreferenced and destroyed. The documentation
states that all objects that directly or indirectly depend on a context
that has been destroyed will be left in an inconsistent state and must
not be accessed thereafter. Applications (such as Android applications)
that need to cleanly destroy and re-create Cogl resources should make
sure to manually unref these dependant objects before destroying the
context.

010d16f647 Adds initial GLES2 integration support
This makes it possible to integrate existing GLES2 code with
applications using Cogl as the rendering api.

Currently all GLES2 usage is handled with separate GLES2 contexts to
ensure that GLES2 api usage doesn't interfere with Cogl's own use of
OpenGL[ES]. The api has been designed though so we can provide tighter
integration later.

The api would allow us to support GLES2 virtualized on top of an
OpenGL/GLX driver as well as GLES2 virtualized on the core rendering api
of Cogl itself. Virtualizing the GLES2 support on Cogl will allow us to
take advantage of Cogl debugging facilities as well as let us optimize
the cost of allocating multiple GLES2 contexts and switching between
them which can both be very expensive with many drivers.

As as a side effect of this patch Cogl can also now be used as a
portable window system binding API for GLES2 as an alternative to EGL.

Parts of this patch are based on work done by Tomeu Vizoso
<tomeu.vizoso@collabora.com> who did the first iteration of adding GLES2
API support to Cogl so that WebGL support could be added to
webkit-clutter.

This patch adds a very minimal cogl-gles2-context example that shows how
to create a gles2 context, clear the screen to a random color and also
draw a triangle with the cogl api.

54735dec84 Switch use of primitive glib types to c99 equivalents
The coding style has for a long time said to avoid using redundant glib
data types such as gint or gchar etc because we feel that they make the
code look unnecessarily foreign to developers coming from outside of the
Gnome developer community.

Note: When we tried to find the historical rationale for the types we
just found that they were apparently only added for consistent syntax
highlighting which didn't seem that compelling.

Up until now we have been continuing to use some of the platform
specific type such as gint{8,16,32,64} and gsize but this patch switches
us over to using the standard c99 equivalents instead so we can further
ensure that our code looks familiar to the widest range of C developers
who might potentially contribute to Cogl.

So instead of using the gint{8,16,32,64} and guint{8,16,32,64} types this
switches all Cogl code to instead use the int{8,16,32,64}_t and
uint{8,16,32,64}_t c99 types instead.

Instead of gsize we now use size_t

For now we are not going to use the c99 _Bool type and instead we have
introduced a new CoglBool type to use instead of gboolean.

3700cc26a5 Change API so that CoglPixelBuffer no longer knows its w/h/format
The idea is that CoglPixelBuffer should just be a buffer that can be
used for pixel data and it has no idea about the details of any images
that are stored in it. This is analogous to CoglAttributeBuffer which
itself does not have any information about the attributes. When you
want to use a pixel buffer you should create a CoglBitmap which points
to a region of the attribute buffer and provides the extra needed
information such as the width, height and format. That way it is also
possible to use a single CoglPixelBuffer with multiple bitmaps.

The changes that are made are:

• cogl_pixel_buffer_new_with_size has been removed and in its place is
cogl_bitmap_new_with_size. This will create a pixel buffer at the
right size and rowstride for the given width/height/format and
immediately create a single CoglBitmap to point into it. The old
function had an out-parameter for the stride of the image but with
the new API this should be queriable from the bitmap (although there
is no function for this yet).

• There is now a public cogl_pixel_buffer_new constructor. This takes
a size in bytes and data pointer similarly to
  cogl_attribute_buffer_new.

• cogl_texture_new_from_buffer has been removed. If you want to create
a texture from a pixel buffer you should wrap it up in a bitmap
first. There is already API to create a texture from a bitmap.

This patch also does a bit of header juggling because cogl-context.h
was including cogl-texture.h and cogl-framebuffer.h which were causing
some circular dependencies when cogl-bitmap.h includes cogl-context.h.
These weren't actually needed in cogl-context.h itself but a few other
headers were relying on them being included so this adds the #includes
where necessary.

c6528c4b6c Start removing _EXP defines and improves some docs
Originally we decided to use #define tricks to rename all experimental
symbols so that they had an _EXP suffix so it would be a bit clearer for
those wanting to check for ABI changes that they shouldn't worry about
these experimental symbols.

We feel now though that the defines are a bit more hassle than they are
really worth, since they are one extra thing to remember when coding,
they make using gdb slightly more awkward since you have to use the real
symbol name to set breakpoints and we already have a mechanism for
declaring symbols as experimental via gtk-doc that can be used by anyone
wanting to check for ABI changes.

Instead of just using a script to remove all the #defines we are going
to go through them manually because we need to make sure the symbols
are marked as unstable via gtk-doc. This patch does a first batch of
define removals and in fact some of the symbols didn't have any
documentation at all so that needed to be added too.

09e7174b1d Remove cogl_context_set_default API
For cogl 2.0 we don't want to have a default context. In the meantime
we can simply assume that calling cogl_context_new() implicitly
sets that context as the default context before returning.

f436582114 android: Add support for an EGL/Android winsys
The native window type of the EGL/Android winsys is ANativeWinow*. The
Android NDK gives you a pointer to this ANativeWindow and you just need
to configure that window using the EGLConfig you are choosing when
creating the context.

This means you have to know the ANativeWindow* window before creating
the context. This is solved here by just having a global variable you
can set with cogl_android_set_native_window() before creating the
context. This is a bit ugly though, and it conceptually belongs to the
OnScreen creation to know which ANativeWindow* to use. This would need a
"lazy context creation" mechanism, waiting for the user to create the
OnScreen to initialize the GL context.

dd5a1c888b gles1: Include GLES/egl.h or EGL/egl.h depending on the implementation
Early implementations provided only a GLES/egl.h while Khronos's
implementer guide now states EGL/egl.h is the One. Some implementations
keep a GLES/egl.h wrapper around EGL/egl.h for backward compatibility
while others provide EGL/egl.h only.

Also took the opportunity to factorize a bit this inclusion in
cogl-defines.h.

d5d11f1878 Moves all EGL code down from Clutter to Cogl
As was recently done for the GLX window system code, this commit moves
the EGL window system code down from the Clutter backend code into a
Cogl winsys.

Note: currently the cogl/configure.ac is hard coded to only build the GLX
winsys so currently this is only available when building Cogl as part
of Clutter.

d40cdfa3e1 Moves all GLX code down from Clutter to Cogl
This migrates all the GLX window system code down from the Clutter
backend code into a Cogl winsys. Moving OpenGL window system binding
code down from Clutter into Cogl is the biggest blocker to having Cogl
become a standalone 3D graphics library, so this is an important step in
that direction.

e9b1ca0165 cogl: Adds experimental cogl_context_new() API
This adds a new experimental function (you need to define
COGL_ENABLE_EXPERIMENTAL_API to access it) which takes us towards being
able to have a standalone Cogl API. This is really a minor aesthetic
change for now since all the GL context creation code still lives in
Clutter but it's a step forward none the less.

Since our current designs introduce a CoglDisplay object as something
that would be passed to the context constructor this provides a stub
cogl-display.h with CoglDisplay typedef.

_cogl_context_get_default() which Clutter uses to access the Cogl
context has been modified to use cogl_context_new() to initialize
the default context.

There is one rather nasty hack used in this patch which is that the
implementation of cogl_context_new() has to forcibly make the allocated
context become the default context because currently all the code in
Cogl assumes it can access the context using _COGL_GET_CONTEXT including
code used to initialize the context.

c8ddb3b55a cogl-atlas: Try 4 different approaches for migrating textures
Instead of directly banging GL to migrate textures the atlas now uses
the CoglFramebuffer API. It will use one of four approaches; it can
set up two FBOs and use _cogl_blit_framebuffer to copy between them;
it can use a single target fbo and then render the source texture to
the FBO using a Cogl draw call; it can use a single FBO and call
glCopyTexSubImage2D; or it can fallback to reading all of the texture
data back to system memory and uploading it again with a sub texture
update.

Previously GL calls were used directly because Cogl wasn't able to
create a framebuffer without a stencil and depth buffer. However there
is now an internal version of cogl_offscreen_new_to_texture which
takes a set of flags to disable the two buffers.

The code for blitting has now been moved into a separate file called
cogl-blit.c because it has become quite long and it may be useful
outside of the atlas at some point.

The 4 different methods have a fixed order of preference which is:

* Texture render between two FBOs
* glBlitFramebuffer
* glCopyTexSubImage2D
* glGetTexImage + glTexSubImage2D

Once a method is succesfully used it is tried first for all subsequent
blits. The default default can be overridden by setting the
environment variable COGL_ATLAS_DEFAULT_BLIT_MODE to one of the
following values:

* texture-render
* framebuffer
* copy-tex-sub-image
* get-tex-data

1a5a4df326 journal: Support per-framebuffer journals
Instead of having a single journal per context, we now have a
CoglJournal object for each CoglFramebuffer. This means we now don't
have to flush the journal when switching/pushing/popping between
different framebuffers so for example a Clutter scene that involves some
ClutterEffect actors that transiently redirect to an FBO can still be
batched.

This also allows us to track state in the journal that relates to the
current frame of its associated framebuffer which we'll need for our
optimization for using the CPU to handle reading a single pixel back
from a framebuffer when we know the whole scene is currently comprised
of simple rectangles in a journal.

a8216aff2f cogl: Fallback to set_data when mapping a buffer to fill it
In the journal code and when generating the stroke path the vertices
are generated on the fly and stored in a CoglBuffer using
cogl_buffer_map. However cogl_buffer_map is allowed to fail but it
wasn't checking for a NULL return value. In particular on GLES it will
always fail because glMapBuffer is only provided by an extension. This
adds a new pair of internal functions called
_cogl_buffer_{un,}map_for_fill_or_fallback which wrap
cogl_buffer_map. If the map fails then it will instead return a
pointer into a GByteArray attached to the context. When the buffer is
unmapped the array is copied into the buffer using
cogl_buffer_set_data.

9aea72fab5 Allow multiple CoglAtlases for textures
Previously Cogl would only ever use one atlas for textures and if it
reached the maximum texture size then all other new textures would get
their own GL texture. This patch makes it so that we create as many
atlases as needed. This should avoid breaking up some batches and it
will be particularly good if we switch to always using multi-texturing
with a default shader that selects between multiple atlases using a
vertex attribute.

Whenever a new atlas is created it is stored in a GSList on the
context. A weak weference is taken on the atlas using
cogl_object_set_user_data so that it can be removed from the list when
the atlas is destroyed. The atlas textures themselves take a reference
to the atlas and this is the only thing that keeps the atlas
alive. This means that once the atlas becomes empty it will
automatically be destroyed.

All of the COGL_NOTEs pertaining to atlases are now prefixed with the
atlas pointer to make it clearer which atlas is changing.

a05c701e6b cogl: upload matrices with uniforms on GLES2
Once the GLES2 wrapper is removed we won't be able to upload the
matrices with the fixed function API any more. The fixed function API
gives a global state for setting the matrix but if a custom shader
uniform is used for the matrices then the state is per
program. _cogl_matrix_stack_flush_to_gl is called in a few places and
it is assumed the current pipeline doesn't need to be flushed before
it is called. To allow these semantics to continue to work, on GLES2
the matrix flush now just stores a reference to the matrix stack in
the CoglContext. A pre_paint virtual is added to the progend which is
called whenever a pipeline is flushed, even if the same pipeline was
flushed already. This gives the GLSL progend a chance to upload the
matrices to the uniforms. The combined modelview/projection matrix is
only calculated if it is used. The generated programs end up never
using the modelview or projection matrix so it usually only has to
upload the combined matrix. When a matrix stack is flushed a reference
is taked to it by the pipeline progend and the age is stored so that
if the same state is used with the same program again then we don't
need to reupload the uniform.

e38e9e0355 cogl-vertex-attribute: Use glVertexAttribPointer on GLES2
When the GLES2 wrapper is removed we can't use the fixed function API
such as glColorPointer to set the builtin attributes. Instead the GLSL
progend now maintains a cache of attribute locations that are queried
with glGetAttribLocation. The code that previously maintained a cache
of the enabled texture coord arrays has been modified to also cache
the enabled vertex attributes under GLES2. The vertex attribute API is
now the only place that is using this cache so it has been moved into
cogl-vertex-attribute.c

1d88e6c8ac cogl-journal: Attempt to clip manually to avoid breaking up batches
Before flushing the journal there is now a separate iteration that
will try to determine if the matrix of the clip stack and the matrix
of the rectangle in each entry are on the same plane. If they are it
can completely avoid the clip stack and instead manually modify the
vertex and texture coordinates to implement the clip. The has the
advantage that it won't break up batching if a single clipped
rectangle is used in a scene.

The software clip is only used if there is no user program and no
texture matrices. There is a threshold to the size of the batch where
it is assumed that it is worth the cost to break up a batch and
program the GPU to do the clipping. Currently this is set to 8
although this figure is plucked out of thin air.

To check whether the two matrices are on the same plane it tries to
determine if one of the matrices is just a simple translation of the
other. In the process of this it also works out what the translation
would be. These values can be used to translate the clip rectangle
into the coordinate space of the rectangle to be logged. Then we can
do the clip directly in the rectangle's coordinate space.

b14c2f799c cogl-journal: Defer expanding the vertices until uploading
When logging a quad we now only store the 2 vertices representing the
top left and bottom right of the quad. The color is only stored once
per entry. Once we come to upload the data we expand the 2 vertices
into four and copy the color to each vertex. We do this by mapping the
buffer and directly expanding into it. We have to copy the data before
we can render it anyway so it doesn't make much sense to expand the
vertices before uploading and this way should save some space in the
size of the journal. It also makes it slightly easier if we later want
to do pre-processing on the journal entries before uploading such as
doing software clipping.

The modelview matrix is now always copied to the journal entry whereas
before it would only be copied if we aren't doing software
transform. The journal entry struct always has the space for the
modelview matrix so hopefully it's only a small cost to copy the
matrix.

The transform for the four entries is now done using
cogl_matrix_transform_points which may be slightly faster than
transforming them each individually with a call to
cogl_matrix_transfom.
