The X server sends a XkbNewKeyboardNotify event for each keyboard
device when a new keyboard description is loaded. These days a typical
computer has several keyboard devices, e.g. xinput on this laptop
lists 8. Since the work we do on these events is relatively expensive
and we are only really interested in changes to the virtual core
keyboard we can skip other devices' events to cut on needless work.

Using ClutterEffect is not pratical on MetaBackgroundActor, as the FBO
redirection has a noticeable performance impact. Instead, allow adding
GLSL code directly to the pipeline used to draw the background texture.
At the same time, port MetaBackgroundActor to modern Cogl API.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=669798
When support for multiple plugins was removed, the logic that was
supposed to send events to Clutter directly *only if there is no filter
function from a plugin* was broken, so events were being sent to
Clutter twice if Clutter didn't consume them the first time.

When using the show-desktop shortcut with no desktop window, unshowing
will focus the second-most-recently-used window. If we find a desktop
window, it will be focused explicitly and everything works as expected;
however without a desktop window, we end up hiding the focus window,
which will use focus_default_window() with the not_this_one parameter
to move focus away. We used to get away with this, as the not_this_one
parameter was ignored until commit e257580b94, now with bug 675982
fixed, we need to explicitly handle the show-desktop case.

On startup, workspaces are initialized according to the num-workspaces
preference. However when using dynamic workspaces, the actual number
of workspaces in use might be greater than the preference (when
replacing the window manager), forcing windows on those workspaces
to the first workspace.
To fix, ignore the preference completely when using dynamic workspaces
and try to restore the previous number of workspaces (as read from
_NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS).

Fixes bug #670396. Without this fix the guard window may not
extend over the whole area of the screen after a XRandR
reconfiguration. The effect being that mouse events are
delivered to invisible windows.
Moving focus immediately on crossing events as we currently do
in focus-follows-mouse mode may trigger a lot of unwanted focus
changes when moving over unrelated windows on the way to a target.
Those accidental focus changes prevent features like GNOME Shell's
application menu from working properly and are visually expensive
since we now use a very distinct style for unfocused windows.
Instead, delay the actual focus change until the pointer has stopped
moving.

meta_window_group_paint tries to carefully figure out which parts of the
scene it can avoid painting. One area it avoids painting is the region of
the screen occupied by an unredirected window (if there's one present).
When subtracting from the visible region, it gets the coordinate spaces
confused, and ends up subtracting the area at the wrong offset. Fix this
by translating the rectangle subtracted from the visible region.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=677116
When changing the overlay-key setting, the change only takes effect
on restart - there are actually two bugs involved:
(1) the test whether the key has changed is located in the
else part of a test for string settings (and overlay-key happens
to be a string settings ...)
(2) with (1) fixed, a change signal is emitted, which triggers a
reload of all keybindings - unfortunately, the actual value
of overlay-key is only read on startup, so the key is reloaded
using the old value
Fix both issues by replacing the custom handling of the overlay-key
with the regular handling of string preferences.

When we consider tiling a special case of maximization, it makes

Currently we decide whether a modal dialog should be attached or not
when mapping it, i.e. we don't pick up preference changes that happen

extra polish ...

The "multiple plugins loaded at once" strategy was always a big fiction:
while it may be viable if you're super careful, it's fragile and requires
a bit of infrastructure that we would be better off without.
Note that for simplicity, we're keeping the MetaPluginManager, but it only
manages one plugin. A possible future cleanup would be to remove it entirely.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676855

It is impossible to switch to other windows when keep-on-top is set

This effectively makes MetaShapedTexture not a MetaShapedTexture, but a simple
and dumb MetaMaskedTexture, with an optimization for clipped regions.
We're doing this as the mask may need to be more complicated than made of
a cairo path -- we eventually want GTK+ to draw the entire frame background,
which we'll then scan.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676052
As we want GTK+ to paint the mask on an A8, we can't simply use a cairo
path. A later commit will make this into a simple masked texture, and
meta-window-actor will be in control of the mask.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676052
The concept of a clip region doesn't make sense now that we have anti-aliased
corners and a full alpha channel. Once the theme transition is complete,
creating a preview image with an alpha channel will be possible by passing
an ARGB surface to gtk_widget_draw(preview_widget, ...);
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676052
These queued redraws, which is a problem when we want to know exactly
what changed when we redraw, so we do minimal effort. We're eventually
going to replace the queue_redraw API with something a lot better, so
let's just get these out of the way now.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676052
Since we now cache windows in the X server, we don't really need to cache
them here. Since we are redirecting windows in most cases, we're not gaining
anything except added memory usage. Additionally, remove the clip to screen
optimization - if a window is partially off-screen, we still need to draw
the entire thing as redirection means we won't get an expose event for it.
Additionally, when introducing invisible borders, something accidentally
slipped through: we were getting expose events on the invisible borders,
and they weren't in the cached pixels rect, so we were painting the theme
for them, even if we didn't actually paint anything with cairo. Make sure
to clip out the invisible borders instead of just the client rect so that
we don't draw if our expose event is on the invisible borders.

Commit 2fc880db switched from focusing the topmost window as the default
window to focusing the MRU window. This was done in alignment with the
introduction of per-workspace MRU lists to avoid problems where the window
stack was inadvertently changed when focusing windows during window switches.
Now that focusing windows don't have as big an impact on the stacking order,
we can revert back to focusing the top window, which is less confusing to the
user.
For now, leave per-workspace MRU lists, as they're a pretty good approximation
of a global MRU list, and it works well enough.

Windows that have minimum widths larger than the screen can't be maximized,
even though we put them in a maximized state and allow users to do so:
the window just won't change size and position. Fix this by simply not giving
the option to maximize, like what happens for non-resizable windows.

A lot of code did something similar to:
MetaFrameBorders borders;
if (window->frame)
meta_frame_calc_borders (window->frame, &borders);
else
meta_frame_borders_clear (&borders);
Sometimes, the else part was omitted and we were unknowingly using
uninitalized values for OR windows. Clean this up by just testing
for a NULL frame in meta_frame_calc_borders and clearing for the
caller if so.

Windows that start up in a size that is almost as big as the workarea create
extra work for the user (resizing or maximizing) so save the user's time by
detecting such windows and automaximize them.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=671677
Basically we don't really want to create windows that are almost maximized in
size but not actually maximized. This creates work for the user and makes it
very difficult to use and resize manually.
So set the newly unmaximized window size to the previously used size or 80% of the
size of the current workarea (attempting to retain natural aspect ratio if
possible), whichever is smaller.

The move-to-corner keybindings weren't treated as user actions, which
resulted in them not affecting the saved position - they weren't

bugs in the positioning logic that were hidden by the constraint
code applied to automated moves. Fix those as well. Bug tracked

We currently sync the number of workspaces with the corresponding
preference. This is not really useful with GNOME Shell's dynamic
handling of workspaces, not least as the setting is effectively
ignored. Worse, it will trigger writes to dconf on login, slowing
down startup, so add a setting to indicate that workspaces are managed
dynamically and really ignore the num-workspaces setting when set.

After _unmanage the object is semantically dead even if technically it's not,
so remove the prefs listener here to prevent it being called for a dead

In particular this fixes a crash when starting up gnome-shell with at least
one gimp utility window opened which causes mutter to create a MetaWindow for
it only to immediately get an UnmapNotify afterwards which causes mutter to

The experimental Cogl api cogl_texture_pixmap_new() was recently changed
so it now expects an explicit CoglContext argument and it can also
return exceptions now via a GError. This patch updates mutters use of
the api accordingly.
This was preventing Clutter from running its dispose, preventing
it from being destroyed correctly. While a major bug and possibly
big memory leak, the most obvious effect was the message that Clutter
spat out:
Clutter-CRITICAL **: clutter_actor_iter_next: assertion `ri->age == ri->root->priv->age' failed
Since we never disposed the actor correctly, it was never removed
from its parent, and the age wasn't updated correctly.
When we were shaping the window with a cairo region, there was an easy
optimization to restrict painting only to the pixels we were going to
actually draw. With rounded corners, the amount of work we have to do
figure out what pixels isn't worth the small savings of not drawing the
completely transparent parts of the corners, so remove this optimization,
and the supporting meta_shaped_texture_get_visible_pixels_region()
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657639
ClutterTexture has many features that we simply don't use and don't make
sense for a subclass with custom drawing. Deriving directly from ClutterActor
simplifies our code by avoiding workarounds and makes things more robust.
Additionally, make it public. GNOME Shell was already assuming that any
MetaShapedTexture was also a ClutterTexture, and we need to replace these
bits with new API for GNOME Shell to use.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=660941
When meta_display_unmanage_window_for_screen() is called, it gets a list
of windows and iterates over them and unmanages them, but unmanaging a
window with attached modal dialogs also unmanages those attached modal
dialogs (in the normal case, temporarily), so we need to guard against
such cases by ref'ing the windows in the list and checking if they have
already been unmanaged.

If we get two configure events on the root window in close
sequence, then we could get the sequence:

<relayout happens, stage window resized by clutter>
ConfigureNotify on the root window, w2xh2

ConfigureNotify on the stage window, w1, h1)

clutter_actor_set_size(stage, w1, h1)

Leaving the stage at the wrong size. To avoid fighting with Clutter,
switch to resizing the stage with XResizeWindow(), similar to how a
toplevel window is handled by a window manager.
For maximized windows, titlebars cannot be used to reposition or
scale the window, so if an application does not use it to convey
useful information (other than the application name), the screen
space occupied by titlebars could be put to better use.
To account for this use case, a setting for requesting that windows'
titlebars should be hidden during maximization has been added to
GTK+, add support for this in the window manager.

The current code requires windows to be resizable to be considered
for tiling, which excludes all maximized/tiled windows. While this
restriction concurs with the desired behavior for edge-tiling, it
feels overly restrictive for keybindings.
As the edge-tiling code in update_move() already ensures the above
restriction, it seems save to remove it from the can_tile_maximized()
function, assuming that windows that are not meant to be tiled or
maximized won't provide a maximize function.

The code here was always incorrect - we were processing damage events for
windows without having a texture. Before, this didn't matter, as
cogl_texture_get_width silently returned 0 for invalid handles. Cogl commit
4c3dadd35e changed this.
The fix here involves two strategies. First, we try to guard MetaTextureTower
from invalid textures. Second, we try not to go down the path that eventually
calls meta_shaped_texture_update_area by not handling damage events if we
don't have a texture for the window.

If we are moving in snap mode (shift pressed) we don't want to tile. We must
also cancel any pending tiling if snap mode is activated during the move drag.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=662270
When we reparent a window to the root when we're exiting, we need to offset
the position by the invisible borders, otherwise windows will creep up and
to the left.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=660848
meta_window_get_current_tile_area() computes the area where the tiled window
should be based on the current pointer position but that's only meaningful
when the user is actually dragging the window.
When running the tiling constrain the pointer might be on other monitor and at
that point the window jumps to this other monitor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=642580
When using more than one monitor, tiled maximization can be triggered with the
pointer in one monitor while most of the window area remains in another. This
means that the maximization constraint would maximize the window into the wrong
monitor as it uses the work area size/position as target.
Fix this by using the current tile area as target size/position.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657519
Since the frame window size that meta_window_move_resize() uses depends
on whether the window has horizontal/vertical resize functionality, we
need to update this flag before we resize the window.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=659854
If a window had a type hint intended for override-redirect windows
like NOTIFICATION, we ended up with a window that was decorated but
with a frame type of FRAME_TYPE_LAST, causing assertion failures.
Fix this by making recalc_window_features() just call
meta_window_get_frame_type().
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=599988
The theme state used to use GtkStateType, but was ported over to GtkStateFlags,

themes, for example Nodoka.

_NET_FRAME_EXTENTS should contain the difference between where a window asked
to be placed, and where it is. Ideally, this should be the same as the visible
extents.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=659848
A window can specify geometry that it is placed at. We need to exclude invisible
borders when calculating where to place the window, otherwise the window will have
a strange offset.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=659848
When a window loses its frame we must unset any overlay path previously set on
the shaped texture.
Not doing so would cause rendering glitches near the window corners in
e.g. chrome/chromium by changing the Appearance preference "Use system title
bar and borders" → "Hide system title bar and use compact borders".
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=659477
Shaded windows are assumed to be reduced to the titlebar: the
current code enforces a visible bottom border of 0 and only takes
the size of the title bar (+ invisible top border) into account
when resizing the frame. However, we still add an invisible border
at the bottom, which is than subtracted from the title bar, resulting
in shaded windows being cut off.
Fix by forcing both visible and invisible bottom borders to 0.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=659266
XFixesCreateRegionFromWindow does not take the window's position into account,
which results into setting a wrong shape for windows not located on the
leftmost monitor.
Fix that by creating the region from the window's MetaRectangle.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657869
If we do this, then there will be invisible borders around the top of attached
modal dialogs, which is unnecessary -- they can't be resized from the top
border and just interfere with the parent dialog.
This requires changing a bit of API to help identify the type of dialog.

Our usage of DamageReportBoundingBox was causing us to miss some

the window to the primary monitor.

Different bits of code were using slightly different checks to test
whether a window was an attached dialog. Add a new
meta_window_is_attached_dialog(), and use that everywhere.
Also, freeze the is-attached status when the window is first shown,
rather than recomputing it each time the caller asks, since this could
cause problems if a window changes its type after it has already been
attached, etc. However, if an attached window's parent is destroyed,
or an attached window changes its transient-for, then fix things up by
destroying the old MetaWindow and creating a new one (causing
compositor unmap and map events to be fired off, allowing the display
of the window to be fixed up).
Remove some code in display.c that tried to fix existing windows if
the gconf setting changed, but which didn't actually do anything (at
least under gnome-shell). However, if 654643 was fixed then the new
behavior with this patch would be that changing the gconf setting
would affect new dialogs, but not existing ones.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=646761
The code here was wrong in every way: it only updated the shape if all the
borders changed. It never saved new last_borders even if it *had* changed,
and the bounding rectangle's x and y positions were still important otherwise.
This had user-visible impact when doing simple things like changing the
border_width. It would short-circuit here and due to the above incorrectness,
weirdness could happen where windows would be cut off and so on.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=656334
gtk:custom() requires a fallback color in case the GTK+ theme in use
does not define the desired color. As in general the fallback color
will approximate the intended color, there is the risk of typos going
unnoticed. To make catching these kind of errors easier, allow to ignore
the fallback color specified (and fall back to a nice shade of pink
instead) by setting an environment variable.

get_outer_rect now returns the visible region, and a new get_input_rect

Just a quick little commit to help clean things up for when we add invisible

There were actually *two* MetaFrameGeometry structs: one in theme-private.h,
one in frame.h. The latter public struct was populated by a mix of (void*)
casting and int pointers, usually pulling directly from the data in the private
struct.
Remove the public struct, replace it with MetaFrameBorders and scrap all
the pointer hacks to populate it, instead relying on both structs being used
in common code.
This commit should be relatively straightforward, and it should not do any
tricky logic at all, just a sophisticated find and replace.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644930
Since we're not setting the frame's output shape any more, it doesn't
make sense to calculate the output shape based on the frame window.
Instead, track the client window directly and calculate the output shape
based on that.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644930
In preparation for switching to handling the output shape purely by what we
paint, stop applying a shape to the frame of the window. Even when we restore
handling the output shape, this will change the behavior with respect to input;
transparent areas between the frame and the contents will stop clicks rather
than passing them through, but that is arguably at least as expected
considering how that we decorate shaped windows with a frame all around.

MetaShapedTexture can be a ClutterX11TexturePixmap sub-class, given that
ClutterGLXTexturePixmap is just a shim compatibility layer since Clutter
1.4, and it's been deprecated.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=655064
meta-texture-rectangle and meta-shaped-texture both create textures
with GL_TEXTURE_RECTANGLE_ARB as the target using direct GL
calls. This patch moves that code into a shared utility function in a
separate file instead. The function resolves the required GL symbols
dynamically instead of linking to them directly so that if Clutter
eventually stops linking to -lGL mutter will continue to build. The
function also splits the texture creation into a separate texture
creation and data upload stage so that it can use
cogl_texture_set_region to upload the data. That way it can avoid
clobbering the glPixelStore state and it can let Cogl do any necessary
format conversion. The code preserves the old value of the rectangle
texture binding instead of clobbering it because Cogl expects to be
able to cache this value to avoid redundant glBindTexture
calls. Finally, the function uses cogl_object_set_data to
automatically destroy the GL texture when the Cogl texture is
destroyed. This avoids having to have special code to destroy the cogl
texture.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=654569
texture_tower_revalidate_fbo() called cogl_flush() to work around
clutter bug #2110, which has been long fixed.
As we depend on clutter 1.7.x anyway we can just remove that workaround.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=654729
Clutter now has some API to get the bounds of the current redraw clip
so Mutter no longer needs to make direct GL calls to get the scissor
rect. This should make it more robust against Cogl or Clutter changing
how it does the clipping.

Calling meta_later_add() or meta_later_remove() from within a
META_LATER_BEFORE_REDRAW callback ended up being a no-op, because of
how run_repaint_laters() was fiddling with the laters list. (This
resulted in a crash in window.c:idle_calc_repaint(), which assumed it
would only be called when a certain queue was non-empty, but was
getting called anyway because of a failed meta_later_remove() call.)
Fix this by having run_repaint_laters() work on a copy of the laters
list instead, and add refcounting to MetaLater so that removing a
later that run_repaint_laters() hasn't gotten to yet won't cause
problems.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=642957
When we get a press of the overlay key, and then another key is pressed,
first try to handle the combination as a global keybinding. If that fails,
call XAllowEvents(..., ReplayKeyboard, ...) to let it be handled by

This requires restructuring things to call XAllowEvents a bit later
so we can pass the right mode.

The code assumed that the focus window was always the one at the
top of the window stack, which is not true if an unfocused window
has the above hint set.
Rather than fixing this assumption, rename the function to

function is only used for displaying the tile previews, which means
that we want the grab window anyway.

Add an additional color type to pick up colors defined with
@define-color in the GTK+ theme's CSS:
gtk:custom(name,fallback)
(where "name" refers to the name defined in GTK+'s CSS, and fallback
refers to an alternative color spec which is used when the color
referenced by "name" is not found)
The main intent of the change is to allow designers to improve
Adwaita's dark theme variant without having to compromise on colors
which work in the light variant as well.

of the existing code.

When detaching/attaching a dialog, we were only updating
appears-focused on the parent if the child itself was focused, but in
fact, we need to do it if the child has an attached child which is
focused too.
To simplify the case of detaching a focused subtree from its parent,
we change meta_window_propagate_focus_appearance() to use
@window->display->focus_window as the window to add/remove as the
attached_focus_window, and @window only as the starting point to
propagate from. That way we can propagate focus-removal up to
@window's (soon-to-be-ex-)ancestors without having to remove it from
its descendants as well.

Back the API version down to 3.0; since we don't make any stability
guarantees, there's no reason to have a merry-go-round of different

a subset of the bounding region. Certain programs such as wine depended
on this behavior.

When there was no root background pixmap, we were using a 1x1 repeating
texture as a simple way of drawing a solid color without adding a
second code path. However, when that 1x1 texture was combined into
a larger "atlas texture", hardware repeat couldn't be used, so a
small inefficiency from this approach became an enormous inefficiency
as clutter drew every pixel of the background as a separate rectangle.

When left-clicking the frame border with the titlebar being
off-screen, rather than starting the expected grab operation the

way to get to the window menu.

meta_run() calls meta_finalize() after the main loop exits, which ends
up calling meta_display_close(), which calls
meta_quit(META_EXIT_SUCCESS), meaning that any exit status passed to
the original meta_quit() call is lost.
Fix this by ignoring meta_quit() calls after the main loop is no
longer running.

Like the setting of new frames' background is delayed until the
frame is associated with its window, delay attaching the initial
style, so that the correct style variant is picked.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645355
When the _GTK_THEME_VARIANT property changes, rather than just
updating the window's theme_variant property, update its frame
style as well, so that the window decoration reflects the requested
variant. As the initial properties of a window may be read before
its frame is created, there will be cases where the change is not
picked up initially.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645355
In order to pick up colors from a GtkStyleContext, a temporary
GtkStyle object was created from the context and destroyed after
copying the requested GdkColor. This is slightly inefficient, so
get the appropriate GdkRGBA from the context and translate it to
a GdkColor, based on the compatibility code in gtkstyle.c.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645355
Rather than sharing a single style context between all frames, use
a default style and one style per encountered variant (as determined
by the _GTK_THEME_VARIANT property), so that colors from the GTK+ style
are picked from the correct theme variant.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645355
Since version 3.0, GTK+ has support for style variants. At the moment,
themes may provide a dark variant, which can be requested by
applications via GtkSettings. The requested variant is exported to
X11 via the _GTK_THEME_VARIANT property - support this property, in
order to pick up the correct style variant in the future.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645355
Rather than using a single widget's style for GTK+ colors in themes,
use the style context parameter of the drawing functions for those
colors. Right now, a single style context is shared between frames,
but this will change to support different style variants.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645355
To determine the correct background style, the UI needs to access
some frame properties via meta_core_get(); this call will bail out
early if window->frame is unset, so delay the call until the
association is made.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645355
gdk_cairo_set_source_rgba() is a convenience function which was

If a window is not maximizable, then that probably means it looks dumb
at very large sizes. Even if its hints would allow you to manually
resize it to a large size, don't allow automatically tiling it to half

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647901
If a window had no title property set, then the

because window->title was NULL; handle that case and use the
string "Application is not responding."
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649114
Command line arguments are supposed to be in the locale encoding,
not UTF-8, and Zenity decodes command line string command line
arguments with this assumption using GOption.
There was a half-hearted attempt to deal with this in delete.c,
but it wasn't correct since it immediately mixed the window title,
converted to the locale encoding with a UTF-8 message.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649114
As a library, libmutter should not be setting the default translation
domain to point to itself.
Also, move the bindtextdomain() call earlier
(meta_get_option_context), so that translations of command-line
options will be available.
We could call textdomain() in mutter.c, but there's no need to, since
mutter uses dgettext() everywhere anyway.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649202
Previously, the restart command hardcoded "mutter" as the binary name.
This commit changes it to use g_get_prgname() which has a better chance
of being correct (and it does fix session saving for gnome-shell).
Now that mutter is a library, it might be more correct (but also
much higher overhead) to add api for setting these things from
the outside.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=648828
An ARGB window with a frame is likely something like a transparent
terminal. It looks awful (and breaks transparency) to draw a big
opaque black shadow under the window, so clip out the region under
the terminal from the shadow we draw.
Add meta_window_get_frame_bounds() to get a cairo region for the
outer bounds of the frame of a window, and modify the frame handling
code to notice changes to the frame shape and discard a cached
region. meta_frames_apply_shapes() is refactored so we can extract
meta_frames_get_frame_bounds() from it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=635268
It's useful to get frame shapes and manipulate them within Mutter, for
example so that the compositor can use them to clip drawing.
For this, we'll need the regions as cairo regions not X regions, so
convert frame shaping code to work in terms of cairo_region_t.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=635268
Using MetaWindowActor.opacity for _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY makes it
difficult to implement effects like fading a window in on map.
Instead, set the opacity on the MetaShadedTexture child and use
it when drawing the shadow.
Since the check MetaWindowGroup does on meta_actor_get_paint_opacity()
no longer covers this, we need to handle the opacity in
meta_window_actor_get_obscured_region() explicitly.

If a window can not be tiled, e.g. due to its minimum size hints,

To fix, reset the tiling state in the maximize-tile code path as
well if necessary.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647662
Since appears-focus only propagates up from modal dialogs, if an
application removed the modal hint from a dialog before destroying it,
then its parent would be left with a stray reference to it in
attached_focus_window, causing it to be permanently appears-focused.
The obvious fix, calling meta_window_propagate_focus_appearance() when
the modal hint is removed, tends to cause noticeable flashing, because
the window will get drawn unfocused and then focused again.
So instead we just change meta_window_propagate_focus_appearance() to
check the window type only when focusing in, not when focusing out.
This would also cause flashing, but in this case we can avoid it by
not notifying the change in appears-focus on the parent window if it
is the expected_focus_window (which it will be by this point). (This
does mean though that if something weird happens and the window
doesn't end up becoming the focus window, it won't get redrawn
unfocused until something else forces it to.)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647613
We need to redraw a window's shadow any time the value of
meta_window_appears_focused() changes. So make that into a property so

This is necessary for gnome-shell to know whether it should try to

un-export util.h or fix it.

As the position of attached modal dialogs is determined entirely
by the position of the parent window, the dialog may end up
partially off-screen (especially if the dialog is wider than the
parent). In this case, diverge from the calculated position and
try to fit the dialog on-screen.

Currently, attached modal dialog can be grabbed (either by the

Commit 96c43866 changed the tiling behavior to prefer edge tiling
over maximization in corner cases (well, quite literally). As a
side effect, it only allows untiling of edge-tiled windows by
dragging the window towards the correct edge.
This patch restores the old behavior for untiling, while keeping
the new behavior for untiled windows.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645455
For tiling, we check whether the pointer is near the edges of
the monitor where the pointer is located, so checking that the
pointer is within the bounds of the monitor is unnecessary and
confusing.
Mark that the the third argument to meta_rectangle_union and
meta_rectangle_intersect is an (out) argument that should be created
by the language binding.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645247
If dragging the title bar to the edge of the screen to side-tile,
it's easy to end up above the workarea and end up maximized instead.
Make the entire side of the screen act as edge-tiling.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644961
In a performance or regression testing environment, we may want to
only manage windows from a particular test program, and ignore all
other windows. The MUTTER_WM_CLASS_FILTER environment variable is a
list of WM_CLASS values that should be managed; other windows will
be unmapped and ignored.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644252
gtk3 no longer has the --screen command-line argument, which mutter
was passing to zenity. Use --display (with an explicitly-specified
screen number) instead.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643683
This made sense back in the day of stateless window managers,
but gnome-shell isn't. gnome-session will handle gnome-shell
crashing, since it's a required component.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644529
This adds a preference that when enabled makes all windows not on
the primary monitor be visible on all workspaces (i.e. not part of the
workspace switching handling).
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=609258
Sometimes on_all_workspaces is requested by the client/user, and sometimes
its calculated implicitly due to internal state. We split this up so that
we know when the user has explicitly asked for sticky window, when e.g.
setting wmspec properties or storing session info.
on_all_workspaces means this window is visible on all workspaces.
on_all_workspaces_requested, means the user explicitly made the window
sticky somehow (via imported session, _NET_WM_STATE from another wm,
toggled in the window menu, etc). It always implies on_all_workspaces is
TRUE.
Right now the only time we set on_all_workspaces is for override-redirect
windows, but later we can add a "windows on non-primary monitor are not
part of the workspace switching" feature.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=609258
Until the actor is destroyed, we need to have access to the
MetaWindow to access some fields used for painting. Keep a strong
reference to the window rather than just hoping the window will
not be freed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=642787
We don't actually use the full xrandr to get the primary monitor, we
just rely on the xrandr xinerama compat code to return the primary
monitor first. This lets us avoid adding unnecessary xrandr code and
avoids issues with _NET_WM_FULLSCREEN_MONITORS monitor indexes being
defined wrt xinerama monitor index order.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=609258
The latter move method will place the window by the origin of the
enclosing window decoration/frame, while the former will place by the
origin of the inner window, itself.
(Also moved meta_window_showing_on_its_workspace comment into
gtk-doc)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=642355
When reload_net_wm_state() is called at startup to read the initial
value of _NET_WM_STATE, it was calling recalc_window_type(), but not
recalc_features(), which meant that, eg, meta->skip_taskbar would
never get initialized from meta->wm_state_skip_taskbar, which meant
that next time mutter went to update the window's _NET_WM_STATE, it
would overwrite the app-specified initial values. Fix that.
(In metacity, this bug is masked by the fact that recalc_features()
gets called when reading the intial value of WM_NORMAL_HINTS, which
comes after _NET_WM_STATE in metacity's prop_hooks_table. In mutter,
the table got reordered at some point, exposing the bug.)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=624360
If mutter is going to be a "real" library, then it should install its
includes so that users can do
#include <meta/display.h>
rather than
#include <display.h>
So rename the includedir accordingly, move src/include to src/meta,
and fix up all internal references.
There were a handful of header files in src/include that were not
installed; this appears to have been part of a plan to keep core/,
ui/, and compositor/ from looking at each others' private includes,
but that wasn't really working anyway. So move all non-installed
headers back into core/ or ui/.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643959
Move all of the mutter code into a new libmutter-wm.so, split its
main() method into meta_get_option_context(), meta_init() and
meta_run(), add methods for using in-process plugins, and add
libmutter-wm.pc pointing to the new library.
The mutter binary is now just a tiny program that links against
libmutter-wm. The --version and --mutter-plugins options are handled
at the mutter level, not in libmutter-wm, and a few strange unused
command-line options (--no-force-fullscreen and --no-tab-popup) have
been removed.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643959
meta_restart() was broken, in that it restarted mutter with what was
left of argv after GOption and Clutter had possibly modified it.
Rather than try to fix this, just remove it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643959
Revert the early_initialize changes (which get in the way in the
"libmutter-wm" paradigm), remove the GConf key for setting plugins,
and remove plugin "params", which weren't being used. Also remove all
the logic for unloading and reloading plugins, since the list never
changes after startup now.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643959
This changes the introspection configure flag from
--with/--without-introspection to --enable/--disable-introspection,
and changes it so that trying to enable introspection when g-i is not
installed results in an error, rather than being silently ignored.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643959
It looks amazingly lame if we simply call exit() during logout. While
it's true that for applications that use XSMP, gnome-session will
close them before us, that doesn't do anything for non-XSMP apps,
which we really hope is the common case.
Instead, we just go away when the X server does.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643437
For GNOME Shell, we need to grab our DBus names *before* we talk XSMP.
gnome-session takes our XSMP connection as "I'm ready", and starts
running all the other random crud that people dropped in as autostart
files. But for example, we need to have claimed
org.freedesktop.Notifications before a lot of said crud starts.
This requires a plugin API version bump.
Misc: Move handling of --version way earlier in main() where
it should be; no point having it wedged after plugin handling.
If we handle a key event then passing it to GTK+ as well can only
cause confusion. Normally GTK+ would do nothing with a key event for
some window it doesn't know about, but plugins might be doing more
things with the GTK+ event queue.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=642426
If a plugin was explicitly specified, falling back to the default
silently is bad; a manager component like gnome-session can
do a better job of handling this scenario.
An example we've hit in gnome-shell is where SpiderMonkey changes
without gjs being rebuilt, and loading the plugin fails due to
unresolved symbols.
But there are obviously others, like the file being missing or
corrupt.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=641384
Similar to the recently added 'size-changed' signal, we may want to do
something in response to a window being repositioned without waiting for
notify::allocation. (Especially since what we can do in notify::allocation
is severely limited by Clutter forbidding queueing an allocation at that
point.)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=641310
If we are previewing hidden windows, we might be previewing them in a context
like a thumbnail view of a workspace where we care about positioning. So, instead
of waiting until the window is first actually shown to place it, if
live_hidden_previews is set, place the window window when we first compute its
visibility, even if we don't end up showing it.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=641309
A plugin that does workspace management on its on may want to set the
workspace layout without having to deal with putting a property
on the root window to be read back and parsed.
Add meta_screen_override_window_layout() that allows the same types
of layouts as _NET_DESKTOP_LAYOUT but without setting a property.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=640552
A logic bug was resulting in the bottom hidden window (hidden means means
minimized or on a different workspace) continually being stacked above
the other hidden windows.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=640679
When we delete a workspace before the active workspace, we need
to upate the _NET_CURRENT_DESKTOP since the active workspace index
changes. To do this workspace.c:set_active_space_hint() is moved
to screen.c:meta_screen_set_active_workspace_hint() so that it
can be shared.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=640581
Emit a signal when the window size changes. While it is already
possible to connect to notify::allocation (or width/height), the
new signal is emitted outside a clutter allocation cycle, which
makes it more convenient when adjusting an actor's size/position
in response.
On gcc-4.4 (void)<expr> doesn't suppress warnings from
__attribute__((warn_unused_result)), so use
G_GNUC_UNUSED (which expands to __attribute__((unused))) instead
of removing a dummy variable.

As the tile preview is shown or hidden when a window is dragged
around, it may stick around if the drag operation is cancelled.
Make sure that the preview is hidden in this case.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=639988
Drag operations may be cancelled, in which case the dragged window
should be restored to the position/state it had when the drag was
initialized. In order to do this for tiled states, the original
state has to be saved during the operation.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=639988
The previous tiling state of a grabbed window should be restored
if the drag operation is cancelled (by hitting the Escape key).
This might involve to meta_window_tile(), so export the function
in window-private.h.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=639988
GtkStyle has been deprecated in favor of GtkStyleContext. A full
port would involve replacing GdkColor with GdkRGBA - leave this

We want switching between the windows of an application to be an easily
accessible operation. The convenient and memorable keybinding is the
key above the tab key - but the keysym for that key isn't consistent
across different keyboard layouts.
Add code that figures out the key from the XKB geometry and a magic
keysym name "Above_Tab" that refers to this key and switch
the default binding for cycle_group to <Alt>Above_Tab. (This will
have no effect for the normal case of getting the key binding from
GConf until this patch is applied to Metacity as well.)
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=635569
It may be desirable for theme authors to treat side-by-side tiled
windows differently, for instance to give the edge-touching border
a width of 0, so add additional frame states for tiled windows.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637330
With the existing background functions, single buttons can not be
styled separately - on the left side, the style of the left button
is picked, and the right button's style on the right side.
As theme authors may want to add rounded corners to button groups
as a whole, it makes sense to treat the case of a single button in
a group differently.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=635683
When validating button functions and frame styles, the required
format version of the features used in the theme was compared to
the major version number of the supported format, limiting additions
to major theme format bumps.
Use peek_required_version() instead, so the minor version number
of the supported theme format is taken into account.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=635683
While the configured layout is taken into account for positioning
the buttons, the mapping from button function states to button
position states just assumed the default button layout in LTR
locales.
Do a proper mapping depending on the actual layout instead.

This patch removes the ability to disable compositing in mutter. As
clutter compositing was the reason for the fork from metacity, turning
compositing off does not make sense.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=626875
To deal with reentrancy from compositor plugins doing things like
moving windows between workspaces in an effect callback, update

Commit 2c8c1c6df49 in gtk+ removed gdk_display_get_core_pointer().
The equivalent functionality can be achieved by using the
GdkDeviceManager to retrieve the client pointer device.
Maximized tiled windows end up with an inconsistent tile mode when
unmaximized by other means than dragging the window free (e.g.
using the unmaximize button or double clicking the title bar), so
reset the tile mode when unmaximizing.
This is not a problem for side-by-side tiling, as there are no
alternatives to dragging the window free.
When a tiled window is maximized (e.g. by clicking the title bar
button), unmaximizing the window restores the tiled state. While
this is reasonable for side-by-side tiling, it is confusing for
"maximize" tiled windows, as unmaximization has no visible effect.
Change unmaximize to only restore the tiled state of side-by-side
tiled windows.
The original patch triggered "maximize" when the window was dragged
to the top, so that the pointer was below or on the monitor edge and
above the work area's top.
If there's no chrome at the top of the monitor, so that monitor edge
and work area top fall together, the pointer cannot be moved above
the work area's top, so tiling was not triggered.
GTK is about to clean up its code and remove duplicate macros and
GdkDrawable usage. To prepare for that landing, we use the future-safe
versions of the same calls.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=636302
The old behavior of being able to shake loose a maximized window
overlaps with and is for the most part superceded by top edge tiling.
This commit changes the code to only enable shake loose behavior
when edge tiling is disabled.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=630548
In addition to the existing side-by-side tiling modes, this commit
adds a new "maximize" tiling mode. It allows the user to maximize
their windows (in other words, tile with the edge panels) by dragging
their window to the top edge of the monitor.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=630548
The meta_window_handle_mouse_grab_op_event function ensures
the tile_mode variable is in a consistent state after a drag
op is finished.
The way this is current done is:
if (!window->maximized_vertically &&
window->tile_mode != META_TILE_NONE)
window->tile_mode = META_TILE_NONE;
While valid, it doesn't "read" as well as using the
META_WINDOW_TILED_SIDE_BY_SIDE macro, since the macro is specifically
about side-by-side tiling.
This commit just changes things to use the macro and to not bother
checking the tile mode (since if we just reset it anyway, then it doesn't
matter if the value is right or wrong to begin with).
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=630548
Currently, the new tiling feature, supports side-by-side, horizontal
tiling when dragging windows to one of the vertical edges of a monitor.
Other types of tiling (on other monitor edges) are potentially useful,
though.
This commit renames the preference from side_by_side_tiling to
edge_tiling.

A direction parameter is passed to meta_compositor_switch_workspace(),
to indicate the direction of the switch depending on the workspace
layout.
In contrast to the switcher popup, this parameter does not take the
text direction of the locale into account. Change this, so that the
workspace switching animations move in the correct direction.

overlay_key_combo needs the same treatment as other keycodes on a
change - we should always recompute it if we have a keysym not
a keycode, and not only if the keycode hasn't already been
computed.
Simplify the keymap loading logic by unifying the different
branches; in the reorganization this patch fixes a bug where when
we got a MappingKeyboard event we wouldn't update virtual modifiers
correctly.

* Select for XKB keyboard notification events explicitly; since GTK+
has selected for XKB events, delivery of old-school MappingNotify

all bindings that have a key symbol rather than a fixed
keycode.

If we have repeats on for a full-sized image, then if the background
is displayed scaled (for example, in a desktop preview mode) then we
can get artifacts along the edge of the background where the repeat
of the opposite edge is blended in by bilinear scaling. So turn off
repeats when the screen and background image sizes match.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=634833
Add code to track and draw the root window background. The advantage of doing
it here as compared to in a plugin is that we can use the visiblity smarts
of MetaWindowGroup to optimize out drawing the background when obscured.
If handling other than tracking the _XROOTPMAP_ID property is desired in the
future, more functionality like setting the background from a file or doing
cross-fades can be added.
The new background actor is exposed to plugins via meta_plugin_get_background_actor()
similar to other exposed actors to allow cloning the background for use in
other displays. The actual class is not installed for public consumption at
the moment since it has no useful methods.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=634833
Create new cogl-utils.[ch] and move a helper function from
MetaShadowFactory there as meta_create_texture_material(); this
allows us to create single-layer materials from different parts of

Also expose a function for creating a 1x1 texture of a given
color meta_create_color_texture_4ub().
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=634833
When in a partial stage paint, we can combine that with the visibility

TFP (and do the check every time we set a pixmap),
we can let gcc generate better code here.

For various reasons (mostly the stack tracker correctly predicting the
stacking order before getting events, but also because of the processing
that the compositor does to get the actor stacking order) the compositor
can be told to sync the stack when it has nothing to do. Detect this
at the last moment before actually telling Clutter to restack to avoid
triggering unnecessary redraws.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=634771
Since we can't distinguish a ConfigureEvent that indicates a raise
from a ConfigureEvent that indicates a move, we get lots of
STACK_OP_RAISE_ABOVE events for windows that are already in the
right place in the stacking order. Avoid queueing a restack in that
case.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=634771
Fullscreen and maximized windows never have visible shadows - the only
case where we would ever see them is if they bleed onto an adjacent
monitor and that looks bad.
It's small performance win to avoid computing them, and this also avoids
painting the top shadow for all maximized windows in GNOME Shell - since
the top panel isn't a X window, it doesn't factor into the computation
of what parts of windows are visible and maximized windows are computed
as having a top shadow.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592382
These functions duplicate existing properties; they are added for
convenience and to avoid the GObject property code on some
performance critical painting paths.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592382
Instead of making optimizing obscured shadows an all-or-none operation,
pass the clip region to meta_shadow_paint() and only paint the 9-slices
that are at least partially visible.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592382
Instead of setting shadow parameters on individual windows, add the
idea of a "shadow class". Windows have default shadow classes based
on their frame and window type, which can be overriden by setting
the shadow-class property.
Each shadow class has separably configurable parameters for the
focused and unfocused state. New shadow classes can be defined with
arbitrary names.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592382
Frame types will form the bases of shadow classes, which are strings,
so export the to-string function so that we can do the conversion
uniformly.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592382
The basic MetaShadowFactory type is moved to a public header, while
the functions to fetch and paint shadows are kept private.
The public object will be used for configuration of shadows by
plugins.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592382
For attached modal dialogs, we want the shadow to fade out at the top
as if the window was glued to the parent at the top. Add a
shadow-top-fade property to MetaWindowActor and the corresponding
parameter to meta_shadow_factory_get_shadow().
The internal implementation of MetaShadow is adjusted to work
in terms of an "inner border" and "outer border" instead of doing
the calculations in terms of an aggregate border and the spread
of the shadow. The old way of doing things gets clumsy when the
top_fade distance is added in as well.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592382
Add a new frame type META_FRAME_TYPE_ATTACHED which is used for
attached modal dialogs.
The theme format version is bumped to 3.2, and attached windows
can have borders defined in a metacity-theme-3.xml as:
<window version=">= 3.2" type="attached" style_set="[name]"/>
If no style is defined for "attached", drawing will fall back
to the "border" type.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592382
The current shadow code just uses a single fixed texture (the Gaussian
blur of a rectangle with a fixed blur radius) for drawing all window
shadows. This patch adds the ability
* Implement efficient blurring of arbitrary regions by approximating
a Gaussian blur with multiple box blurs.
* Detect when multiple windows can use the same shadow texture by
converting their shape into a size-invariant MetaWindowShape.
* Add properties shadow-radius, shadow-x-offset, shadow-y-offset,
shadow-opacity to allow the shadow for a window to be configured.
* Add meta_window_actor_paint() and draw the shadow directly
from there rather than using a child actor.
* Remove TidyTextureFrame, which is no longer used

The size_request vfunc is going to be dropped in GTK3; replace
the usage in MetaAccelLabel and MetaPreview with

In GTK+ 3, it's mandatory to have a GdkDevice in a synthesized event,
so fill in the pointer device for the events we synthesize and forward
to GTK+. Since gdk_event_set_device() only works for allocated events,
we need to switch to gdk_event_new() rather than using stack allocated
events.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=633401
Now that we create MetaWindow objects for override-redirect windows, we need
to check all key press events to see if they are on GTK+ widgets, not just
events that don't match a MetaWindow. This fixes a problem with alt-Tab stealing
grabs away from the window menu.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=633398
With client side windows, mixing GDK event delivery with explicit calls
to XUngrabPointer() can result in GDK losing button release events
it expects to get. This means that GDK thinks there is an implicit
grab in effect when there is none and send events to the wrong window.
Avoid this by bypassing GDK's event handling for most mouse events.
We do a simplified conversion of the X event into a GdkEvent and send
it to directly to libgtk for delivery.
We make an exception when a GDK grab is already in effect - this is
needed for the correct operation of menus.

meta_display_process_key_event() always looks up events based on the

The code for defining a color as a constant had broken logic: it
would try to parse the color first as an double, then as an integer;
the second attempt would produce an error about overwriting the

Use the fact that colors have to start with a letter or #, divide the

In many places, MetaRegion was being used entirely internally, rather
than for gtk2/gtk3 compatibility. In these cases, it's simpler to just
depend on cairo-1.10 (for both gtk2 and gtk3) and use cairo_region_t.
The few places where we did need GDK compatibility (GdkEvent.region and
gdk_window_shape_combine_mask) are replaced with a combination of
converting GdkRegion to cairo_region_t and conditional code.

With the newest changes to GTK3, some things were changed. This patch
now uses the features introduced in gtk3-compat.h in previous patches.
This patch also introduces a macro named USE_GTK3 that is used to
differentiate between GTK3 and GTK2. Its main use is differenting
between expose and draw handlers for GtkWidget subclasses.
The draw vs expose handlers question is usually handled by using ifdefs
at the beginning and end to set up/tear down a cairo_t and then use it.
However, when the function is too different and too many ifdefs would be
necessary, two versions of the function are written. This is currently
the case for:
- MetaAccelLabel
- MetaFrames

Similar to the region compatibility shim, we will soon need a
compatibility shim around GdkPixmap/cairo_surface_t. For now, the patch
just introduces the compatibility layer.
This patch also does not include the function
meta_gdk_pixbuf_get_from_pixmap() as that function will need special
treatment in GTK3 anyway.

This commit is in preparation for the work happening in GTK3, which will
use Cairo for drawing exclusively. So it is necessary to move all
drawing code to Cairo. In this commit the "gtk2" code is used for both
gtk2 and gtk3; compatibility with newer versions of gtk3 where different
code is needed will be added subsequently.
For compatibility with older GTK versions, the file gdk2-drawing-utils.h
provides a compatibility layer.
The commit changes the API of libmutter-private.

For functions (but not callback types), '(closure)' is used on the
callback parameter, and takes the name of the parameter which is
the closure/user data.
A maximized window can't be resized from the screen edges (preserves
Fitts law goodness for the application), but it's still possible
to start a resize drag with alt-middle-button. Currently we just
don't let the user resize the window, while showing drag feedback;
it's more useful to let the user "break" out from the resize.
This provides a fast way to get a window partially aligned with
the screen edges - maximize, then alt-drag it out from one edge.
Behavior choices in this patch:
- You can drag out a window out of maximization in both directions -
smaller and larger. This can be potentilaly useful in multihead.
- Dragging a window in only one direction unmaximizes the window
fully, rather than leaving it in a horizontally/vertically
maximized state. This is done because the horizontally/vertically
maximzed states don't have clear visual representation and can
be confusing to the user.
- If you drag back to the maximized state after breaking out,
maximization is restored, but you can't maximize a window by
dragging to the full size if it didn't start out that way.
A new internal function meta_window_unmaximize_with_gravity() is
added for implementing this; it's a hybrid of
meta_window_unmaximize() and meta_window_resize_with_gravity().
Port of the metacity patch from Owen Taylor in bug 622517.

The widget needs to be visible and mapped for GTK3 to deliver expose
events to the widget. This is achieved by making the map function a
no-op and calling gtk_widget_show() instead of just calling
gtk_widget_realize().
Apart from making GTK think the widget is drawable, the effect is the
same.

The hacks we were playing by calling gdk_error_trap_push() and then
resetting the error handler are incompatible with the rewrite of
GDK error traps.
Since the new error code has some features that simplify what we
are doing (like automatically figuring out whether a XSync() is needed)
and because our custom error handler didn't have a lot of a point,
use a separate code path for GTK+ 3.0 builds that just uses the
GDK error traps straight-up without a custom error handler.

We don't get correct notifications for the ::cogl-texture property of
ClutterTexture in the case when we are unsetting the pixmap before calling
XFreePixmap. (This is because ClutterX11TexturePixmap is a hack on top
of ClutterTexture and we're a hack on top of that.) So we need to manually

For consistency we also make sure that we drop all references to dead
textures:

Rather than trying to find out from Clutter whether mipmap generation
can be used together with texture_from_pixmap, just always assume
it can't and use the MutterTextureTower emulation code.
This fixes a problem with our previous hack for doing the query
no longer working. In the rare cases where mipmap generation
is supported, it is unlikely to produce significantly more efficient
or better looking results than the emulation. (In terms of efficiency,
we have better knowledge of when we need to update the lower mipmaps
and when we don't than CoglTexturePixmapX11.)
Some care is taken so mutter_shaped_texture_set_create_mipmaps() works
when changed on the fly and properly discards the old mipmap levels.
This isn't necesary currently, since it can only be controlled via
envvar, but is easier than future-proofing through documentation.

A mismerge of the Metacity commit "4943d79 Prevent window self-maximisation"
caused the window's user set size and position to be saved *before*
actually resizing the window to the unmaximized position rather than after.
This meant that after unmaximization the window was in an inconsistent
state and anything that caused a resize to be queued (like a change in
window properties by the application) would cause it to pop back to
the maximized size and position.

In commit d34ae764769 I switched mutter-window to ask for Raw rectangles
from the X server. This avoided 2 non synchronous and 2 synchronous X
requests per window with damage, per frame; 2 (non-sync) to
create/destroy a temporary region to copy the damage region into, 1 to
request the server to copy the damage region into a our given region and
another to fetch that region back into the client. The problem with raw
events though is that it's possible to DOS the compositor with them.
Instead of receiving an event for every bit of damage this patch instead
asks the server to only report BoundingBox changes to the damage region.

COGL bug http://bugzilla.openedhand.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2110 results

This changes the way we handle Damage events so instead of getting an
event when the damage region of a pixmap becomes non-empty we now get
sent all damage rectangles and stream those all though to
ClutterX11TexturePixmap using clutter_x11_texture_pixmap_update_area()
For Clutter 1.2, ClutterGLXTexturePixmap was updated so that calls to
clutter_x11_texture_pixmap_update_area are now cheap (glXBindTexImageEXT
calls are now deferred until just before painting) and since
ClutterGLXTexturePixmap is now capable of queueing clipped redraws that
can result in only updating a sub-region of the stage during a repaint
cycle (and using glXCopySubBufferMESA to present the sub-region redraw
to the front buffer) this should improve performance and reduced power
consumption for a range of use cases. (For example viewing a website
that has animated adverts doesn't force the whole screen to be redrawn
for each frame of the advert)
Besides being able to take advantage of glXCopySubBuffer to only update
a small region of the stage the fact that this patch makes Mutter now
request RawRectangles from the X server means we no longer do a
synchronous X request for a complete Damage Region for every window
damaged each frame. This should also improve performance.
CLUTTER_PAINT=redraws can be used to visualize what parts of the stage
are redrawn and with this patch applied I can open a terminal and as I
type I see that only the damaged areas of the terminal are being
redrawn.
In the case where a mutter window is created for an X Window that is
already mapped then we weren't calling mutter_window_mark_for_repair and
so we weren't calling XCompositeNameWindowPixmap e.g. for menu windows.
This doesn't get noticed because as soon as some damage gets delivered
for such windows the pixmap will be named anyway, but if we were to
change how damage is handled this would result in broken menus.
We now call mutter_window_mark_for_repair in mutter_window_new when the
given Window is already mapped.
It's nice to indicate when a title is truncated with an ellipsis.
Because themes may draw a title multiple times to draw a shadow, or
may include the window icon within the title area, we can't determine
the proper ellipsization width automatically, so add an optional
attribute to the <title/> element "ellipsize_width" which, if set,
is the width to ellipsize at.
This is only enabled if a theme version of 3.1 is required.
When it's not set, we keep the old behavior of just letting the
title be clipped with a hard edge.

Sometimes you want to position something (usually the title) to be centered
with respect to the entire frame instead of centered with respect to the

the X/Y centers of the frame in the coordinate system of the piece being
drawn.
The theme version is bumped from 3.0 to 3.1 (3.0 is just the new version
system, 3.1 will have all the features we add for Mutter-2.28.)

Although multi-screen support has not been tested and probably
doesn't fully work, the basic setup for multi-screen is that
we have the same list of plugins for all screens, but a different
instance of the plugins for each screen.
To allow plugins to do setup that is screen independent and needs
to occur early in the setup process, we identify a "default plugin
manager" and load (but not start) that plugin manager's plugins
immediately after we know our list of plugins.
That plugin manager is then reused for the first screen we open
and the plugins are started at that time. Separate plugin managers
are loaded and started for any other screens we open.
(A plugin could keep track of whether the screen-independent
setup has been done in a static variable, or it could do everything
in a way that is safe to do repeatedly.)

Allow a plugin to redirect preferences from one GConf location
to another GConf location. This is useful for keys that need to be
set differently in a plugin-managed environment (like GNOME Shell)
as compared to in standalone Metacity.
Overriding is implemented by overwriting the keys in the arrays
of preferences; a list of the current overrides is stored to allow
proper memory management when an override is itself overriden.
(we need to know whether to free the old keys or not)
This patch cleans up the comments in prefs.c a bit as well; some ideas
about less-exciting potential improvements were removed to make the

Rather than using the plugin objects constructed() method for doing
setup that requires the MetaScreen, add an explicit start() method
that is called after the screen is set.
The reason for this is that this allows plugin objects to be created
early before the bulk of Metacity setup, which then allows plugins
to affect how the setup happens. (For example, to change the way
that preferences are loaded.)
This is an incompatible change, since 'screen' is now not set in the
constructed method, so the plugin API version is bumped.

The current mechanism of metacity-theme-1.xml and metacity-theme-2.xml
is not flexible for allowing small-scale additions. With this patch
we bump the major version version once more to metacity-theme-3.xml
and add a single feature:
Any element in the DTD can have an attribute:
version="[<|<=|=>|>] MAJOR.MINOR"
And it will be ignored unless the predicate is met. (< and > should
be to be entity escaped as < and >)
This allows having alternate sections of the theme file for older and
newer version.
* Required GLib version is bumped to 2.14 so we can parse versions
with a regular expression.
* We switch internal version numbers to be "1000 * major + minor"
* We keep a stack of the maximum required version for the current portion
the XML tree so that the "cannot use versions you don't require" stricture
of the old code can be made local to a subpart of the tree.
* A version on the top metacity_theme element causes the entire file to
be ignored; this allows having one metacity-theme-3.xml for version 3.2
and newer (say) and a metacity-1.xml for everything old.
Actual new features will be added starting with 3.1 - 3.0 is just the
version="" feature.

The change to reduce GConf trips by using

When started without session related command line parameters (e.g. from
gnome-session), metacity picks up client_id from the DESKTOP_AUTOSTART_ID
environment variable. Unfortunately, there is no way to distinguish if this was
passed from a config file, representing old saved session, or generated by
gnome-session, therefore load_state is attempted in each case. If the client_id
is generated, there will be no session file, and metacity will report a
warning.
Just remove the warning so that users won't always find a warning at the
start of their .xsession-errors.

The atk-bridge GTK+ module opens its own display; if we get an
XIOError on that display, we shouldn't abort with a meta_bug()
but just exit normally. Also fix a segfault if we got an XError
for that display.

Add a configure switch:
--with-libcanberra=[yes/no/auto]
(defaulting to auto); if libcanberra is not found or explicitly
disabled, then the default system bell will be used for the bell
sound and no switch workspace sound is played.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=609585
These sounds are good candidates for caching in the sound server, to
save a bit of CPU and make reaction faster. Hence, tell libcanberra to
cache them.

libcanberra generates specific tooltip popup sounds and for that
recognizes the tooltip windows by the GtkWindowTypeHint set for them.
This trivial patch simply sets the hint for the self-drawn tooltips
metacity uses.

Right now metacity issues only 1 bell event per second. This is
feels buggy when triggering multiple alarm sounds in a terminal.
This patch simple increases the limit to 1/100ms. 100ms is probably a
good choice since the HIG recommends that all user reaction should
happen within 100ms. With this applied pressing 'Left' in gnome-terminal
feels much more responsive.

* src/core/bell.c: Don't force CA_PROP_CANBERRA_ENABLE to 1.
That was a misunderstanding on my part, and makes it impossible
to get rid of the bell.

* src/core/bell.c (meta_bell_set_audible): Now that we are
using libcanberra, don't tell the X server to play the system
bell internally.

metacity tries to do the right thing, by preloading all the relevant
directories before getting the keys one-by-one, but GConfClient isn't actually
smart enough to avoid server roundtrips in this case. That should certainly be
fixed in GConf.
In the meantime, here is a patch that reworks the metacity prefs initialization
to avoid roundtrips for individual keys anyway, by using
gconf_client_all_keys().

The ICE connection is opened by libSM; we can't just close it when
we get an IOError on the ICE connection; instead call SmcCloseConnection()
and mark the connection as closed. This will prevent a segfault if we
exit out of the metacity main loop and get to meta_finalize().

It makes more sense because the grave key is close
to the tab and escape keys which the other cycle
keybindings use.
This always works better for gnome-shell, which
switchings between applications by default with alt-tab.
The user can now alt-tab to the application they want,
and then move their finger to the grave key to select
the window they want.
