The file indicates to the systemd shutdown scripts that extensions
should be disabled, so that extensions that crash the shell on
startup cannot lock out the user indefinitely.
For that purpose, we create the file before initializing extensions,
and remove it after 60 seconds. That generally works, because it's
highly unlikely that a session genuinely ends within the first minute.
It's possible though (for example during developments or when running
tests), so also remove the file when shutting down cleanly before
the timeout.

Continue the move to ESM by loading modules dynamically with
the standard import() expression, rather than by installing a
custom (legacy) importer.
This is a breaking change that affects all extensions, as they
now need to explicitly export the expected symbols.
As we are already breaking all extensions, take that opportunity
and remove support for the individual entry points: Using a
class with enable()/disable() methods has been the recommended
pattern for a long time, it is now the only entry point.
Instead of instantiating the class from an `init()` function,
the class must now be exported as default to be recognized.
Additionally, we no longer install an importer on the extension
object, so extensions that consist of more than one file MUST
import those files as modules now.
There will be a second breaking change for extensions when
gnome-shell's own code is ported to ESM, so most extension
developers will likely want to wait until the port is complete
before starting to port their extensions.

Since we started to support the color-scheme preference, extensions
should be able to provide appropriate variants (if they deal with
colors).
So look for a variant with -dark/-light suffix before using the
plain stylesheet.css, and reload extension stylesheets on
color scheme changes.

Extensions can export asynchronous enable() and disable()
functions. To guard against re-entrancy when enabling or
disabling an extension, this commit adds two new states:
ENABLING and DISABLING which are set immediately prior
to calling enable() and disable() respectively.
This commit updates the extensions CLI and Extensions app
with new strings for these states.

Don't try to initialize and then enable an extension if it is not supported
in the current mode. Otherwise the extension will not be initialized, and the
initial ERROR state is not cleared. Once it is in ERROR state we can't enable
it anymore when we switch mode. Instead, leave the extension in INITIALIZED
state, so that it will be initialized when appropriate. This happens for
extensions that support the unlock-dialog mode but not the user mode.

GNOME Shell will only update extensions if the org.gnome.Extensions
app is present. This commit adds alternative support for
com.mattjakeman.ExtensionManager to the extension updating mechanism.
It enables updates to occur when extension-manager is the sole installed
tool on the system. When both applications are installed,
org.gnome.Extensions is preferred at all times.

Introduce a new class, EventEmitter, which implements signal
handling for pure JavaScript classes. EventEmitter still
utilizes GJS' addSignalMethods internally.
EventEmitter allows static typechecking to understand the
structure of event-emitting JS classes and makes creating
child classes simpler.
The name 'EventEmitter' mirrors a common name for this pattern
in Node and in JS libraries.

Now that we allow extensions at the lock screens, extensions
are allowed for every session mode gnome-shell would typically
change to at runtime.
This means there's little advantage to having an allowExtensions
property in the session mode definition.
This commit simplifies the code a bit by dropping the property.
Third party session modes can still lock down extensions through
gsettings if they need to.

Now extensions can specify which session modes they work in,
but specifying the login screen or unlock screen session modes in
an extensions metadata still won't work, because those session
modes disallow extensions.

At the moment it's not realy possible to extend the login screen to do
things it doesn't have built-in support for. This means in order
to support niche use cases, those cases have to change the main
code base. For instance, oVirt and Vmware deployments want to be able
to automaticaly log in guest VMs when a user pre-authenticates through a
console on a management host. To support those use cases, we added
code to the login screen directly, even though most machines will never
be associated with oVirt or Vmware management hosts.
We also get requests from e.g. government users that need certain features
at the login screen that wouldn't get used much outside of government
deployments. For instance, we've gotten requests that a machine contains
prominently displays that it has "Top Secret" information.
All of these use cases seem like they would better handled via
extensions that could be installed in the specific deployments. The
problem is extensions only run in the user session, and get
disabled at the login screen automatically.
This commit changes that. Now extensions can specify in their metadata
via a new sessionModes property, which modes that want to run in. For
backward compatibility, if an extension doesn't specify which session
modes it works in, its assumed the extension only works in the user
session.

At the moment a session mode either allows extensions or it doesn't.
If it allows extensions, then the entire available list of
configured extensions get enabled as soon as the session mode is
entered.
Since enabling or disabling extensions is an all or nothing situation,
the code tracks whether extensions are already enabled when entering
the session mode, and if so, avoids iterating through the extension list
needlessly. It does this using a boolean named _enabled.
In the future, the extensions themselves will be given some say on
whether or not they should be enabled in a given session mode. This
means, the configured extension list may contain extensions that
shouldn't be enabled for a given session mode, and the _enabled boolean
will no longer be appropriated.
This commit drops the _enabled boolean optimization.

Since gjs moved to mozjs60, return values of int8_t arrays can
no longer be treated as strings. We originally made the conversion
conditional to keep working with the (then) stable gjs release.
That was two years ago and we require a more recent gjs nowadays,
so there's no good reason for keeping the old code path.

logExtensionError() currently saves the error message by calling
toString() on the passed error. That's convenient as it allows to
pass a string instead of a "proper" error, but the result isn't
great for the common Error case: Its toString() method prefixes
the message with the error name, which usually is just "Error:".
The plain message is more suitable for displaying it to users,
so use that for Error objects.

Spidermonkey caches imports, which means that uninstalling an
old extension version and installing a new one doesn't work as
expected: If the previous version was loaded, then its code will
be imported instead.
For the last couple of releases this has been a reliable source
of extension bug reports after major GNOME updates. Thankfully
chrome-gnome-shell removed its update support in favor of our
built-in support now, but users may still use older versions
or perform those actions manually, so it still makes sense to

Whether or not an extension has errors influences the 'canChange'

Removing a stylesheet from the theme will trigger a style update. There's
little point in updating the extension actors that are about to be destroyed

Extension that want to expose their own preferences (for example as menu
items) do that by passing their UUID to gnome-shell-extension-prefs.
But since 3.36.1 the app is optional and no longer accepts arguments on
the command line. To adjust, extensions now need to make a D-Bus call

xgettext gained some support for template strings, and no longer
fails when encountering '/' somewhere between backticks.
Unfortunately its support is still buggy as hell, and it is now
silently dropping translatable strings, yay. I hate making the
code worse, but until xgettext really gets its shit together,
the only viable way forward seems to be to not use template
strings in any files listed in POTFILES.

It is true that delete is a javascript keyword, but that doesn't
prevent it from being used as method name - there are event built-in
types like Map or Set with delete() methods!

When the extension system is loaded, create the
gnome-shell-disable-extensions file in the users runtime directory. This
file is automatically removed 60s later. The sole purpose of this file
is to be consumed by the systemd units. If the file exists, the systemd
units will disable extensions when the gnome-shell fails.

Since disabling an extension will lead to disabling and re-enabling all
following extensions in the list, always disable multiple extensions by
looping through the list in reverse order.
This lowers the execution time of the event handlers quite a bit if many
extensions are installed.

Only push uuids of newly enabled extensions to the `_extensionOrder`
array if enabling them was successful.
Otherwise, since `_callExtensionDisable()` doesn't remove uuids that
weren't successfully enabled from the array, those extensions get added
to the array multiple times when they're disabled and enabled.

It's currently possible to circumvent the `sessionMode.allowExtensions`
property: For already enabled extensions one can call reloadExtension
via DBus, for new extensions it's possible by adding the extension to
the enabled-extensions gsettings key and setting the
disable-extension-version-validation key (which triggers a reload of
`this._enabledExtensions`) and then calling reloadExtension via DBus.
So to enforce `allowExtensions` while still allowing to update
extensions and keeping the extensionSystem synced with various gsettings
keys, replace the checks for `this._enabled` with simple checks for
`Main.sessionMode.allowExtensions` inside `_callExtensionInit()` and
`_callExtensionEnable()`.
The remaining checks for `this._enabled` are only small optimizations to
prevent running code on irrelevant sessionMode updates.

Instead of only logging a message that loading the extension stylesheet

to access `extension.dir` on undefined/null. So set the `dir` variable
