Quoting Ray Strode:
we don't expose a way to explicitly save the session in gnome anymore
afaik, and I don't think it's going to show on log out because
I believe we use the FORCE flag from the log out dialog.

This old handling of session files looked on ~/.mutter, which has
been unused and unsupported for a long time. It also had paths were
the GError was leaked. Fix both by dropping the legacy code, and
falling back to the common error paths.

This is done by keeping around a pointer to MetaContext as
"client_pointer" (which is practically the same as "user_pointer"
elsewhere), as well as creating a `MetaIceConnection` wrapper for ICE
connections.

MetaGravity is an enum, where the values match the X11 macros used for
gravity, with the exception that `ForgetGravity` was renamed
`META_GRAVITY_NONE` to have less of a obscure name.
The motivation for this is to rely less on libX11 data types and macros
in generic code.

The order and way include macros were structured was chaotic, with no
real common thread between files. Try to tidy up the mess with some
common scheme, to make things look less messy.
- Moved xdisplay, name and various atoms from MetaDisplay
- Moved xroot, screen_name, default_depth and default_xvisual
from MetaScreen
- Moved some X11 specific functions from screen.c and display.c
to meta-x11-display.c

Having “on_all_workspaces_requested” FALSE on a window does not imply a
workspace is set.
If the X11 window is placed on a secondary monitor while workspaces
applies on primary monitor only (“workspaces-only-on-primary” set) then
“on_all_workspaces_requested” is FALSE while “on_all_workspaces“ is TRUE
and the associated workspace is NULL, leading to a crash when saving the
gnome-shell/mutter session.
So if no workspace is set, use the “initial_workspace” instead to avoid
a NULL pointer dereference.

We previously separated out MetaDisplay and MetaScreen. mutter
would only manage one screen, but we still kept a list of screens
for simplicity.
With Wayland support, we no longer care about the ability to
manage more than one screen at a time. Remove this by killing
the list of screens, in favor of having just one MetaScreen
in MetaDisplay.
We also kill off active_screen at the same time, since it's
not necessary anymore.
A future cleanup should merge MetaDisplay and MetaScreen. To avoid
breaking API, we should probably keep MetaScreen around as a dummy
type.
