Traditionally visual alerts were implemented by flashing the focus
window's frame. As that only works for windows that we decorate,
flashing the whole window was added as a fallback for client-decorated
windows.
However that introduces some confusing inconsistency, better to just
always flash the entire window.

The order and way include macros were structured was chaotic, with no
real common thread between files. Try to tidy up the mess with some
common scheme, to make things look less messy.
- Moved xdisplay, name and various atoms from MetaDisplay
- Moved xroot, screen_name, default_depth and default_xvisual
from MetaScreen
- Moved some X11 specific functions from screen.c and display.c

CSD X11 clients and Wayland clients don't have a window frame drawn by
the compositor to flash. So instead of flashing the whole screen when
configured to just flash the window, flash just the window region.

To support invoking the system bell on Wayland we shouldn't have paths
that fallback to X11. Let the X11 caller deal with the absence of
libcanberra, and change API to not take any X events.

At this point there shouldn't be any system capable of running mutter
that doesn't have it and we're introducing functionality like setting
the keymap that has an hard requirement on it.

We previously separated out MetaDisplay and MetaScreen. mutter
would only manage one screen, but we still kept a list of screens
for simplicity.
With Wayland support, we no longer care about the ability to
manage more than one screen at a time. Remove this by killing
the list of screens, in favor of having just one MetaScreen
in MetaDisplay.
We also kill off active_screen at the same time, since it's
not necessary anymore.
A future cleanup should merge MetaDisplay and MetaScreen. To avoid
breaking API, we should probably keep MetaScreen around as a dummy
type.
At one point, it was supported to run mutter without a compositor,
but we don't allow that any longer. A lot of code already assumes
display->compositor exists and doesn't check for a NULL pointer,
so just kill the rest of the checks.
Switching meta/util.h to gi18n.h was wrong, mutter is a library
and needs gi18n-lib.h, but that cannot be included from a public
header (since it depends on config.h or command line options),
so split util.h into a public and a private part.

Commit d0910da036 merged the visual-bell/visual-bell-type options,
but the change turned out too disruptive for gnome-control-center /
gnome-shell, so gsettings-desktop-schemas commit a5819b2a4e9 re-added
the separate option.
Move preferences to GSettings, using mainly shared schemas from
gsettings-desktop-schemas.
Unlike GConf, GSettings support is not optional, as Gio is already
a hard dependency of GTK+.

If mutter is going to be a "real" library, then it should install its
includes so that users can do
#include <meta/display.h>
rather than
#include <display.h>
So rename the includedir accordingly, move src/include to src/meta,
and fix up all internal references.
There were a handful of header files in src/include that were not
installed; this appears to have been part of a plan to keep core/,
ui/, and compositor/ from looking at each others' private includes,
but that wasn't really working anyway. So move all non-installed
headers back into core/ or ui/.

Add a configure switch:
--with-libcanberra=[yes/no/auto]
(defaulting to auto); if libcanberra is not found or explicitly
disabled, then the default system bell will be used for the bell
sound and no switch workspace sound is played.

These sounds are good candidates for caching in the sound server, to

Code:
All references in the code not related to themes, keybindings, or
GConf were changed from 'metacity' to 'mutter'. This includes, among other
things, strings, comments, the atoms used in the message protocol, and
the envvars used for debugging. The GConf schema file was reduced to
the 3 settings new to mutter.
The overall version was brought up to 2.27 to match current gnome.
Structure:
All files named '*metacity*' were renamed '*mutter*' with appropriate
changes in the automake system. Files removed are
doc/creating_themes, src/themes, doc/metacity-theme.dtd,
metacity.doap. These files will eventually end up in an external
gnome-wm-data module.
Installation location:
On the filesystem the mutter-plugindir was change from
$(libdir)/metacity/plugins/clutter to just $(libdir)/mutter/plugins.
The mutter-plugins.pc.in reflects these changes.
Note:
mutter.desktop.in and mutter-wm.desktop both continue to have
X-GNOME-WMSettingsModule=metacity set. This allows
gnome-control-center to continue using libmetacity.so for
configuration. This is fine since most the general keybindings and wm
settings are being read from /apps/metacity/* in gconf.
