MetaWindows get_pid() API changed to use the client PID, which also
works for Wayland clients instead of only X11 clients now. This API
returns 0 instead of -1 for invalid PIDs, so update our check according
to that.

Popups and other override-redirect windows are meaningless to everything
that depends on the ShellWindowTracker. Ignoring those windows will result
in less ShellApp::windows-changed signal emissions, and less activity in
the AppMenuButton and everything else that depends on them.
Reduces gnome-shell CPU activity while typing on the Epiphany addressbar,
as the pop up animation there results in a number of xdg_popup being
created and destroyed.

In `st`, we can do this by using `ST_PARAM_*`. In the other code files,
just use `G_PARAM_STATIC_STRINGS` directly.
This is just a minor convenience to prevent a few unnecessary string
copies.

Back in the day, there was a proposed system of tracking apps in a
specific context.
The inspiration was that you may have used apps in multiple modes:
Firefox may have been used in both "Programmer Reference" and
"Kitten Videos" contexts. Early user response to the feedback wasn't
too positive - context switching is something that humans have trouble
doing implicitly, let alone explicitly. The old codebase still has a
few remnants of this around; let's finally put them to rest.
Note that we still write out a dummy context tag to the XML file - old
versions of the shell will flat out crash if you don't have one of those
in there, so just leave it in for compatibility sake.

Remove any usage of MetaScreen, as it has been removed from libmutter
in the API version 3. The corresponding functionality has been moved
into three different places: MetaDisplay, MetaX11Display (for X11
specific functionality) and MetaWorkspaceManager.

Our window matching currently fails frequently with Flatpak
applications, as one of the primary hints used to link windows
with .desktop files - the WM_CLASS - no longer matches when
flatpak renames the exported .desktop file. Worse, as Flatpak
applications are run in their own PID namespace, different
apps frequently share a common _NET_WM_PID, resulting in
unrelated apps being grouped together by one of the fallback
paths. To match Flatpak applications reliably, take the newly
exported Flatpak ID into account.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=772615
The lookup table used by get_app_from_window_pid contained only pids of
apps launched by gnome-shell itself, but not pids of apps running before
gnome-shell was (re-)started. Also the pids in that table might not even
be the pid of the process that is actually showing the window if wrapper
scripts are used.
Instead use shell_window_tracker_get_app_from_pid which uses the pids
from the windows themselves.
This removes the only use of launched_pid_to_app which will be removed
in the following commit.
This fixes: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=736527
Wayland applications don't tend to have very useful WM Class properties,
as GTK+ isn't very good at picking an appropriate application ID. While
we should likely fix GTK+ to pick a better app ID, we do have the
existing gtk_shell for more accurate information. The only problem is
that the gtk_surface is set after the MetaWindow is constructed, and
we're not listening for changes on the GTK+ application ID.
Listen to changes on the GTK+ application ID to fix app tracking for
most GTK+ applications under Wayland.
Since we started tracking non-interesting windows, we can no longer
assume that if we manage to find an app associated with the focus window,
it should appear focused - we now can find apps for docks, the DESKTOP
window etc.
To restore the old behavior, make sure that the focus window or one of
its parents is "interesting".
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=722928
The code from shell_window_tracker_is_window_interesting() is equivalent
of MetaWindow's skip-taskbar property, so use it to avoid code duplication.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=723308
It is possible to associate an application's window with a different
application using the transient_for hint. However we currently only
consider the hint in get_window_app() and not when making the original
association, which opens the door to some confusing inconsistencies;
for instance, get_window_app() will not necessarily return the same
value for all windows retrieved via shell_app_get_windows().
Fix this by looking at the transient_for hint when making the original
association, not just in get_window_app().
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=722434
All get_app_from_*() helpers are transfer full, but
get_app_from_gapplication_id() was directly returning the result
of lookup_app(), which is transfer none.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=721439
Filtering out "non-interesting" windows beforehand as we currently do
means that we may get properties that should be based on all windows,
like the last time the application was used, wrong.
Just track all windows and filter out non-interesting windows manually
in the one place we actually care about the difference.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=719824
In the new application model, there is one ID shared by GApplication,
DBus and .desktop files, so we can use that for the association,
instead of fiddling with badly cased wm classes.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706252
Chromium (but not google-chrome) has a StartupWMClass in the desktop
file, so we must match the instance part first to have chrome
web apps working.
Also, we must take care of apps without a wm_class or instance at
all.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673657
Some applications (such as most Java apps, as well as Chrome Web apps) ship
with desktop files that have the wrong name, but whose StartupWMClass
field contains the right value. Therefore first check that key, against
both the class and instance part of WM_CLASS, and only use the filename
if nothing else works.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673657
get_app_for_window() is (transfer full), but shell_app_system_lookup_wmclass()
is (transfer none), so we must reference the result, or crash
occur.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=678992
Currently we assume that GTK_UNIQUE_BUS_NAME is shared between all
windows of an application. This assumption does not hold true for
applications that specify G_APPLICATION_NON_UNIQUE, so make sure
to update the menu as necessary.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676238
In the workspace-collecting code we add a check to avoid collecting a
workspace if any startup sequence is running there. Since the sequence
can take some time to load, an helper function is also added which keeps
the (empty) workspace around for a very short time, while waiting for the
sequence to start.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=664202
GTK+ also exports window-specific actions, by putting the object path
for the exported action group in the _DBUS_OBJECT_PATH X property.
We add this action group to the app's muxer with a 'win' prefix,
since that is what the exported menu expects. Whenever the focus
window changes, we update the window-specific actions of its
application, and emit notify::action-group to cause the app
menu to be updated.
This patch fixes the "apps vanish from alt-TAB bug".
If a "package system" rips away and possibly replaces .desktop files
at some random time, we have historically used inotify to detect this
and reread state (in a racy way, but...). In GNOME 2, this was
generally not too problematic because the menu widget was totally
separate from the list of windows - and the data they operate on was
disjoint as well.
In GNOME 3 we unify these, and this creates architectural problems
because the windows are tied to the app.
What this patch tries to do is, when rereading the application state,
if we have a running application, we keep that app around instead of
making a new instance. This ensures we preserve any state such as the
set of open windows.
This requires moving the running state into ShellAppSystem. Adjust
callers as necessary, and while we're at it drop the unused "contexts"
stuff.
This is just a somewhat quick band-aid; a REAL fix would require us
having low-level control over application installation. As long as
we're on top of random broken tar+wget wrappers, it will be gross.
A slight future improvement to this patch would add an explicit
"merge" between the old and new data. I think probably we always keep
around the ShellApp corresponding to a given ID, but replace its
GMenuTreeEntry.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657990
This dramatically thins down and sanitizes the application code.
The ShellAppSystem changes in a number of ways:
* Preferences are special cased more explicitly; they aren't apps,
they're shortcuts for an app), and we don't have many of them, so
don't need e.g. the optimizations in ShellAppSystem for searching.
* get_app() changes to lookup_app() and returns null if an app isn't
found. The semantics where it tried to find the .desktop file
if we didn't know about it were just broken; I am pretty sure no
caller needs this, and if they do we'll fix them.
* ShellAppSystem maintains two indexes on apps (by desktop file id
and by GMenuTreeEntry), but is no longer in the business of
dealing with GMenuTree as far as hierarchy and categories go. That
is moved up into js/ui/appDisplay.js. Actually, it flattens both
apps and settings.
Also, ShellWindowTracker is now the sole reference-owner for
window-backed apps. We still do the weird "window:0x1234beef" id
for these apps, but a reference is not stored in ShellAppSystem.
The js/ui/appDisplay.js code is rewritten, and sucks a lot less.
Variable names are clearer:
_apps -> _appIcons
_filterApp -> _visibleApps
_filters -> _categoryBox
Similarly for function names. We no longer call (for every app) a
recursive lookup in GMenuTree to see if it's in a particular section
on every category switch; it's all cached.
NOTE - this intentionally reverts the incremental loading code from
commit 7813c5b93f. It's fast enough
here without that.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=648149
I unintentionally made .desktop->pid association "win" over
WM_CLASS. Fixing this makes the case of ancillary .desktop file
entry points (e.g. gnome-control-center's various shortcut .desktop
files) correctly show System Settings, and not whatever the shortcut
is.
In the future I'd like to have a way to say "this .desktop file
is a shortcut, ignore me" or something.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=646689
As a side effect of (see bug 642221), we no longer put docks or
transient windows into the hash table mapping windows to apps. The
"focused application" code relied on at least transients being in
there.
Fix this by calling the public API to map a window to an app, which
will at least follow transients. Whether we also want further
matching here (e.g. with window grouping) is another issue, but that
can happen as a different bug.
